A Raspberry Pi is a family of compact computing products—not a single board. The best-known models are small Linux computers that can run a desktop, server, or project, while the family also includes smaller Zero computers, keyboard-integrated computers, embedded Compute Modules, and Pico microcontrollers. Pico is the key exception: it runs user programs from onboard memory, not Linux.

What is a Raspberry Pi?

The term “Raspberry Pi” can mean either the broader product family or one of its individual devices. The flagship Raspberry Pi computers are single-board computers (SBCs): a computer’s core components are assembled on one compact board, with ports for peripherals and display. Raspberry Pi describes its computer families in its official computer hardware documentation.

Unlike a conventional desktop PC, a typical Raspberry Pi computer setup requires you to provide boot storage and a suitable power supply. Add a screen, keyboard, and mouse for a desktop setup, or configure network access and operate it headlessly for tasks such as a server or other remotely managed project.

Which Raspberry Pi product family fits your project?

Family What it is Typical reason to choose it
Flagship single-board computers Compact general-purpose Linux computers with common ports. Desktop computing, servers, and projects that need a full operating system.
Zero Smaller Linux computers with fewer ports and lower power consumption. Projects where compact size and lower power matter more than a broad selection of onboard connections.
Keyboard computers Computer hardware integrated into a keyboard. Raspberry Pi documentation lists the 400, 500, and 500+ families; the 500 is based on Raspberry Pi 5 hardware, and the 500+ is listed as released in 2025. A computer-and-keyboard form factor rather than a separate board and keyboard.
Compute Module A system-on-module for embedded and industrial designs. A carrier or baseboard supplies the ports and pins needed by the finished system. Integrating Raspberry Pi computing into products such as digital signage, thin clients, or process automation.
Pico A microcontroller board, not a Linux computer. Programs are flashed to onboard memory. Lightweight embedded control and real-time tasks that do not need a general-purpose Linux computer.

The family descriptions and current listed keyboard-computer models are in Raspberry Pi’s keyboard computer documentation and Compute Module documentation.

  • CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)

Model A and Model B are not interchangeable labels

Within the flagship computer range, Model B indicates Ethernet. Model A variants omit Ethernet and have fewer ports and reduced memory. Check the exact model’s specifications if wired networking, port count, or memory capacity matters to your project.

What do you need to get started?

For a standard computer setup, plan for boot storage and power first. Desktop use also calls for a display and a cable that matches the board’s video connector, plus a keyboard and mouse. These items are not all necessary for every use case: a board can be set up for remote network access without a monitor and input devices.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Starter Kit PRO - Turbine Black (128GB Edition) (8GB RAM)
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
  • Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
  • Boot storage: A microSD card is common, but supported boot options differ by model. Some models can also boot from USB storage, network storage, or storage attached through a HAT.
  • Power supply: Select one that meets the exact board’s requirements. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance lists 5V/5A for Raspberry Pi 5 and 5V/3A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. With a 5V/3A supply, Raspberry Pi 5 limits peripheral current to 600mA.
  • Display and cable: Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 use micro-HDMI display outputs; Zero models use mini-HDMI. Match the cable or adapter to the board.
  • Keyboard and mouse: Needed for local desktop interaction, but not mandatory for a headless setup.

These are Raspberry Pi’s published setup recommendations; confirm the requirements for your exact model and power mode in its getting started and installation documentation.

Choose storage capacity and prepare the operating system

For Raspberry Pi OS, Raspberry Pi recommends at least 32GB of storage; for Raspberry Pi OS Lite, it recommends at least 16GB. The documentation says capacities above 2TB are not supported, and some older Zero and Pi 1/2 models have a 256GB boot-partition limitation. These limits and recommendations are model- and operating-system-dependent, so check the current guidance before choosing storage.

  • CONVENIENT ACCESSORIES: The power supply features an inline on/off switch neoprene bag that holds and protects all the parts when not in use and the QuickStart guide is updated and written for Raspberry Pi 4.
  • IMPORTANT: Kit does NOT include Keyboard, Mouse or Monitor

Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi Imager to download and write an operating system image. During setup, Imager can also be used to preconfigure credentials and remote access. The flagship computer setup described in Raspberry Pi’s guide does not include onboard storage, so you need to supply boot media.

Set up a desktop or go headless

For a desktop, connect a compatible display, keyboard, and mouse. For a headless installation, prepare network access and remote login settings in advance so you can manage the computer from another device. Raspberry Pi’s getting started documentation covers setup and use.

How should you choose a model?

Start with what the device must do, then check the physical connections and setup requirements. There is no universal best model established by the cited documentation; the right choice depends on the workload and form factor.

  • Need a general-purpose Linux computer? Look at the flagship computer family. Choose among exact models based on memory, networking, ports, and display connections.
  • Need a smaller, lower-power Linux computer? Consider the Zero family, while accounting for its fewer onboard ports.
  • Want the computer integrated into a keyboard? Consider a keyboard computer, and verify the exact model’s hardware and connectivity.
  • Building Raspberry Pi computing into a product? A Compute Module may fit, but plan for a compatible carrier board to provide standard ports and connections. Raspberry Pi describes these modules for embedded and industrial applications in its Compute Module hardware documentation.
  • Need to control hardware with a small embedded program? Consider Pico if you do not need Linux or a general-purpose desktop environment.

Before buying accessories or a kit, confirm the board version, power supply, storage, case fit, and display cable. Kit contents vary, and a component that suits one Raspberry Pi model may not suit another.

Common points of confusion

Is every Raspberry Pi a Linux computer?

No. The flagship boards, Zero computers, keyboard computers, and Compute Modules are computer products intended for Linux-based use. Pico is a microcontroller board and does not run Linux.

Does a Raspberry Pi include everything needed for a desktop?

No. For the usual flagship-board setup, provide boot media and an appropriate power supply. A desktop also needs a display, matching cable, keyboard, and mouse; a headless project may not need the display or input devices.

Can I use the same power supply and cable with every model?

Do not assume so. Power recommendations and display connectors vary by model. Raspberry Pi 5 uses micro-HDMI and has different power guidance from Raspberry Pi 4 Model B; Zero models use mini-HDMI. Check the exact board documentation before reusing accessories.
