A Raspberry Pi cyberdeck is a compact computer you assemble around a Raspberry Pi, display, keyboard and power source. The Raspberry Pi project highlighted by XDA is a case-based build described in a daily.dev summary as beginner-oriented, with step-by-step images and options for storage, peripherals and power. The summary says the guide references a 16GB Raspberry Pi 5, but it does not establish that this configuration is required.

What the Raspberry Pi cyberdeck project includes

The project is presented as a DIY computer built into a Pelican-style case. That format makes the enclosure part of the design: the board, screen, input devices, storage and power need to fit together as a portable system. The accessible summary of the XDA article says the guide appeared in issue #168 of The Official Raspberry Pi Magazine and includes step-by-step images.

The summary identifies a 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 as hardware referenced by the guide. It does not provide the complete parts list or assembly instructions, so that reference alone is not enough to conclude that every builder needs that board or memory configuration. See the daily.dev summary linking to the XDA article for the available description; the full guide details are not established by that summary.

What to decide before choosing parts

A cyberdeck is shaped by the fit between its components, not just by the Raspberry Pi model. Before choosing substitutions, check the original guide’s exact list and confirm compatibility for the screen interface, physical dimensions and power arrangement.

  • Dedicated Support: Benefit from our ongoing assistance, including a community forum and timely technical help for a seamless learning experience
  • Board: Choose a board that fits the intended workload and enclosure. The 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 is a configuration the summary says the guide references, not a confirmed minimum requirement.
  • Display: Check its size, connection method and power needs. A display that connects directly to GPIO may reduce separate cabling, but that arrangement belongs to a different documented cyberdeck build, not necessarily this project.
  • Keyboard and pointing: A compact keyboard can save space; decide whether the design also needs a trackpad or other pointing device.
  • Case and fabrication: A ready-made case and a custom enclosure impose different constraints. Measure component clearances, mounting points and cable routes before committing to a layout.
  • Power and storage: Verify what the guide specifies for the board, display and peripherals, and how storage is mounted. The summary mentions options but does not identify exact parts.

How it differs from other Raspberry Pi cyberdecks

Two other documented projects illustrate how different the design choices can be. They are independent examples, not confirmed parts or alternatives tested against the case-based Raspberry Pi guide.

Project Core hardware and design What it demonstrates
The Official Raspberry Pi Magazine project, as summarized by daily.dev Pelican-style case; summary says the guide references a 16GB Raspberry Pi 5. Full parts list is not stated in the summary. A case-based, beginner-oriented project with described options for storage, peripherals and power. Source summary.
Clamshell BlackBerry cyberdeck Raspberry Pi 4, HyperPixel 4.0 display, repurposed BlackBerry keyboard and trackpad on a custom carrier, and a 3mm plywood clamshell. A custom clamshell approach. Its maker describes the GPIO-powered display as avoiding a separate display supply and HDMI/DSI connection. The MagPi build.
tinyDeck Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, Keyboard Featherwing and four-AA battery holder. A handheld form factor described for coding and connecting to hardware. Hackster.io project page.

Which build path makes sense?

  • Choose a case-based project if you want a contained layout and the source guide’s step-by-step presentation. Confirm the guide’s exact components before buying parts or making substitutions.
  • Consider a custom clamshell if a built-in keyboard and trackpad are central to your design and you are prepared to fabricate an enclosure and carrier. The BlackBerry example shows one way to integrate those elements, but its parts do not establish compatibility with the magazine project.
  • Consider a smaller handheld design if portability is the priority and you are willing to work within the constraints of a compact board, keyboard and battery arrangement. The tinyDeck is a separate example, not a ready-made parts list for the case build.

What is not confirmed about the featured project

The accessible summary does not establish the complete bill of materials, exact assembly steps, component prices or current availability. It also does not confirm that the 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 is mandatory. Treat the project description as a starting point, not a verified shopping list; use the original guide’s specifications to check each component and substitution.
