A Raspberry Pi cyberdeck is a custom computer built around a specific job, set of peripherals and case—not a fixed kit or standard design. Start by deciding what it needs to do, then choose the computer, screen, controls, storage and power to suit it. Test the connected components before designing and mounting them in an enclosure.
What makes a computer a cyberdeck?
A cyberdeck is a computer shaped around a need that a conventional tablet or computer does not meet—or around a maker’s preferred way of working. It might be a portable workstation, a field control station, a hardware-project host or a compact knowledge store. The form can be wearable, pocket-sized or built into a larger case.
Raspberry Pi’s August 2026 guide to creating a cyberdeck organizes the design around four elements: the computer and storage, peripherals, power, and case. That makes the best starting point the task and form factor, rather than a particular aesthetic or parts list.
Choose the computer and peripherals for the job
Computer and storage
Balance processing needs against power consumption and physical size. Raspberry Pi 5 is the computer in the official guide’s featured build, but a smaller or less demanding project may call for a different board. Choose storage to match the capacity and access you need: the guide lists SD cards, USB flash drives, USB hard drives, USB SSDs and, with an M.2 HAT on Raspberry Pi 5, M.2 NVMe storage.

Use Raspberry Pi Imager to write the operating system you choose to the storage device. Confirm that your chosen operating system and any specialized display or input hardware work together before committing to a compact layout.
Screen, input and audio
Pick a display that is readable at the intended viewing distance and fits the case. A touchscreen can eliminate the mouse for many tasks; a keyboard still needs enough space to be usable. For specialized work, joysticks, encoders or trigger buttons may make more sense than ordinary controls. A small USB hub can help when several USB peripherals must connect.
Raspberry Pi’s featured design uses a 7-inch Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 in landscape orientation at 1280 × 720, a low-profile Rii RK302 Bluetooth keyboard, and a compact USB-C audio board with a 3W stereo amplifier and volume encoder. The keyboard’s flexible chassis needs support in the case. These are choices for one build, not requirements for every cyberdeck.

Check fit and connections before buying or fabricating
- Measure the usable interior of the enclosure, not just its outside dimensions.
- Check the display’s interface, dimensions and cable path, along with the keyboard’s footprint and support needs.
- Count USB devices and confirm which ports, adapters or hub they require.
- Choose storage for the computer’s supported interface and the capacity the project needs.
- Leave room to reach power, storage and other service points after installation.
Work out power before choosing a battery
Use the requirements in the manuals or data sheets for the actual computer and peripherals. Raspberry Pi’s 2026 guide says Raspberry Pi 5 requires 25W (5V at 5A) in the specific worst-case condition where its USB ports are fully loaded. It estimates approximately 3W for the Touch Display 2 at full brightness. Adding those example loads gives at least 28W, or approximately 5.6A at 5V. This is a stated worst-case board condition plus a display estimate, not a universal measured draw for every build.
The guide names a 27W Raspberry Pi USB-C supply for running its example from mains, but its own 28W board-plus-display arithmetic shows why the supply rating alone should not be assumed to cover every configuration. Check the full system’s requirements and allow for the peripherals you select.
Portability does not require a custom battery. A mains supply, power bank or UPS HAT may suit the design better than a battery-and-converter arrangement. The featured build uses a LiPo battery, inline fuse and DC-to-DC converter providing 5V at 5A via USB-C PD. Its battery is disconnected while charging with a separate external charger.

Raspberry Pi cautions that LiPo batteries require careful charging and must not be over-discharged; its guide recommends placing a fuse as close to the battery as possible and monitoring cell voltages. Treat these as manufacturer guidance, not a substitute for the battery and component documentation or appropriate electrical-safety practices. A power bank avoids some of the complexity of integrating and charging a bare LiPo.

Build in stages: test, prototype, then mount
- Define the use. Write down the task, where the device will be used, how portable it must be and which controls or connections it needs.
- Select the computer and storage. Match processing, software, power budget and size to the job, then install the chosen operating system on the storage device.
- Choose peripherals and check compatibility. Confirm screen and input requirements, dimensions, cabling and the number of USB connections.
- Calculate the complete power demand. Add the requirements for the computer and every peripheral. Choose mains, a power bank, UPS HAT or battery-and-converter approach accordingly.
- Connect and test the components outside the case. Verify that the operating system, display, controls, audio and other devices work together before making a mounting plan.
- Prototype the layout. Use cardboard to test dimensions, cable routes and clearances. Then make supports or a more precise model; expect adjustments as the parts come together.
- Mount and test again. Secure the components, preserve access to service points and check the complete assembly before closing the enclosure.
The featured guide uses soldering for some connections and describes heat-shrink for display wiring; Wago blocks are noted as an alternative for some connections. The illustrated build assumes comfort with basic electronics and fabrication. A simpler design without an integrated LiPo can reduce the work involved.

The case determines the available space, component placement and cable routes, so choose it around the tested hardware. The official Raspberry Pi example uses a CASOMAN 11.5-inch waterproof case. Inside, the featured components include the Pi 5, removable storage, display, keyboard and audio controls; the design also uses USB and display ribbon cabling. A Raspberry Pi RTC battery keeps time while the system is off-grid, and the guide gives a configuration line for charging it.

A rugged case is only one possible form. In a Raspberry Pi Zero build in an Altoids tin, the maker combined a tiny custom keyboard, reused 2-inch LCD, UPS HAT and battery, handmade dot-matrix keyboard, RP2040 Zero microcontroller and USB hub. The compact design required space-saving modifications and custom 3D-printed mounts. Its reused display did not work with the latest Raspberry Pi OS version at the time of the article, so the builder reverted to an older version and changed settings. That is a project-specific compatibility warning, not a general rule about small displays.
Another maker’s Pi 5 case build notes document a 10.1-inch display, expansion board, power bank, keyboard, mouse and foam-supported mounting. The author estimates 5–6 hours of runtime but says the battery was not fully run down, so that estimate is not verified battery life. The author also notes that changing the display, Pi or expansion board changes the build, and that listed parts and prices may no longer be available.

Use the official build as a reference for how components can fit together, not as a universal shopping list. Its notable choices are a Raspberry Pi 5, 128GB Raspberry Pi Flash Drive, 7-inch Touch Display 2, Bluetooth keyboard, USB audio and volume controls, and a waterproof case. Power is handled either from mains or through a battery arrangement with a converter; the battery setup uses an external charger and is disconnected for charging. Before adapting any of these parts, verify current availability, connector compatibility, physical fit and total system power for your own configuration.
For mains operation, the guide names a Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C supply. For storage, it uses a Raspberry Pi Flash Drive with 128GB capacity. For timekeeping off-grid, it includes a Raspberry Pi RTC battery. None of those choices removes the need to check the full system: peripherals, wiring and enclosure dimensions can change the practical requirements.
Plan for access and repair
A build that works on the bench can become difficult to maintain once closed into a case. During layout, make sure cables can reach without sharp bends, controls remain usable, and the computer’s power and service points are accessible. Secure flexible components such as a low-profile keyboard so they do not shift during use. Test the finished assembly once more with the case arranged as it will be carried or operated.
