For most projects, Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 is the best starting point. Its 11.9-megapixel sensor and powered autofocus suit everyday photography, video, robotics, and other general-purpose builds. Choose the HQ Camera when you need interchangeable lenses, the Global Shutter Camera for fast-moving subjects or synchronized capture, and the AI Camera when your project specifically needs its integrated AI capabilities.

Before buying, check the camera’s field of view and infrared variant, confirm that its connector and cable work with your Raspberry Pi, and make sure your software tutorials use the current camera stack.

Which Raspberry Pi camera should you choose?

Camera Sensor and still resolution Best suited to Main tradeoff
Camera Module 3 Sony IMX708; 11.9 MP General photography, video, robotics, and projects that benefit from autofocus Fixed optics; select the field of view and standard or NoIR version carefully
HQ Camera Sony IMX477; 12.3 MP Projects where lens choice, focal length, or specialised framing matters You need a compatible lens, and the camera body is larger
Global Shutter Camera Sony IMX296; 1.6 MP Fast motion, machine vision, or synchronized capture Lower pixel count than Module 3 or HQ; lens and lighting matter
AI Camera Sony IMX500; 12.3 MP Camera applications built around its integrated AI capabilities Specialised rather than a default choice for ordinary photography
Camera Module 2 Sony IMX219; 8 MP Existing projects or a compatible setup that does not need newer features Older generation; Module 3 adds autofocus and higher resolution

These are Raspberry Pi’s published hardware specifications, not results from independent comparative testing. Resolution alone does not determine which camera is best: shutter behavior, lens options, framing, and software requirements can matter more for a particular project.

What each camera does best

Camera Module 3: the general-purpose pick

Module 3 combines a 12-megapixel-class sensor with powered phase-detection autofocus. Raspberry Pi lists 11.9 megapixels, a 4608 × 2592 still resolution, and HDR mode. It is the straightforward choice when you want a compact official camera with autofocus and do not need to select a separate lens. See Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 specifications for its variants and details.

  • Check ASIN: B07RWCGX5K for OV5647 with acrylic case. Other optional accessories: ABS case (B09TNG4V55); Mini tripod case kit (B09TKYXZFG).

Its standard and Wide versions have different diagonal fields of view: 75 degrees for standard and 120 degrees for Wide. Standard suits ordinary framing; Wide covers more of a nearby scene. Each field-of-view option is available in standard and NoIR forms, so “Wide” and “NoIR” are separate choices, not interchangeable descriptions.

HQ Camera: when optics are part of the project

The HQ Camera uses a 12.3 MP IMX477 sensor and accepts external lenses through C/CS or M12 mounts, depending on the camera version. Choose it when focal length, lens type, or specialised framing is more important than a fixed-lens compact assembly. Confirm the camera’s mount and the lens mount before ordering; a physically incompatible lens will not fit without the correct arrangement.

  • High resolution: This camera module can offer high-resolution images with its 12.3MP IMX477 sensor, the max resolution is 4056*3040 pixels.
  • Wide Application: This RPI camera can be used as a 3D printer camera, or home security monitor and can serve for Artificial Intelligence, like facial recognition, high-speed capturing, and so on.

Global Shutter Camera: for fast motion and synchronized capture

A rolling-shutter sensor records image rows in sequence, which can make fast-moving objects appear skewed. A global shutter captures all pixels at once, avoiding that characteristic line-by-line distortion. Raspberry Pi’s Global Shutter Camera uses a 1.6 MP IMX296 sensor, a C/CS mount, and supports external triggering. Raspberry Pi documents exposures as short as 30 microseconds when sufficient light is available; this is a hardware capability, not a guarantee that every scene can be captured clearly at that exposure.

Choose this model for machine vision, fast-moving subjects, or synchronized capture—not simply because it is the highest-resolution option. Its 1456 × 1088 resolution is far below Module 3 and HQ, and suitable lensing and lighting remain important.

AI Camera: for a specific on-camera inference workflow

The AI Camera combines a 12.3 MP Sony IMX500 sensor with low-latency AI capabilities for camera applications. It makes sense when the project depends on the IMX500 inference path and a supported software workflow. The “AI” label by itself is not a reason to choose it over Module 3 for ordinary photos or video. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes the official camera hardware and software.

Camera Module 2: for existing compatible setups

Module 2 is an older 8 MP official camera using the Sony IMX219. It may suit an existing project designed around it, or a setup that does not require Module 3’s autofocus or higher resolution. For a new general-purpose build, Module 3 is the more capable starting point in the lineup described here.

How to choose field of view and infrared behavior

For Module 3, select field of view first, then decide whether the camera should filter infrared:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Standard: 75-degree diagonal field of view, suited to ordinary framing.
  • Wide: 120-degree diagonal field of view, useful when you need to cover more of a nearby scene.
  • Standard or Wide NoIR: lacks an infrared filter and can work with IR illumination for dark scenes. NoIR does not mean the camera supplies infrared light; the project needs an IR light source.

The HQ and Global Shutter cameras include IR-cut filters. Raspberry Pi says removing those filters is irreversible and voids the warranty, so treat it as a deliberate modification rather than a routine upgrade. If infrared use is part of the plan, consider whether a NoIR Module 3 meets the need instead.

Check the board connector and cable before buying

Raspberry Pi camera modules connect to computers with CSI connectors, but the connector style is not the same on every board. Raspberry Pi 5, all Raspberry Pi Zero models, and Compute Module IO boards use a mini 22-pin connector. Check the exact board and camera connection before choosing a cable; do not assume that a cable from another Pi will fit.

Use the current Raspberry Pi camera software

On Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm and later, the camera command-line applications use the rpicam-* naming convention. Raspberry Pi’s current camera software documentation describes a libcamera-based stack and support for official camera sensors. Older tutorials may instead use raspivid, raspistill, or the original Picamera library. Raspberry Pi marks that legacy stack deprecated and unsupported, and it does not support newer modules; check that instructions match your OS and camera before following them.

Make the decision by capture task

  • Pick Camera Module 3 for a balanced general-purpose camera with autofocus.
  • Pick Module 3 Wide when covering more of a nearby scene matters more than conventional framing.
  • Pick Module 3 NoIR when using infrared illumination for dark scenes.
  • Pick the HQ Camera when you need to choose your lens and can match it to the C/CS or M12 mount.
  • Pick the Global Shutter Camera when rolling-shutter distortion or synchronized capture is a problem, and its lower resolution is acceptable.
  • Pick the AI Camera when the project specifically calls for its IMX500-based AI capabilities and supported workflow.
  • Consider Camera Module 2 mainly when an existing project or setup is built around it.
