A two-material oxide regenerator made from MnNb2−xTaxO6 and CuFe1−xAlxO2 (CFAO) increased measured cooling capacity at 4.2 K by approximately 40% versus CFAO alone in a two-stage Gifford–McMahon cryocooler. The result, reported by Terada, Fujita, Hojo and colleagues in Communications Materials on 7 October 2026, reached approximately 0.163 W at 4.2 K—more than 70% of the HoCu2 benchmark in the reported comparison.
What the 2026 study demonstrated
The work is a laboratory demonstration of a rare-earth-free magnetic regenerator for 4 K-class Gifford–McMahon (GM) cryocoolers. Instead of relying on a single material, the researchers combined two oxides whose magnetic specific-heat peaks occur in complementary parts of the regenerator’s temperature range.
MnNb2−xTaxO6 (MNTO) supplies a large heat-capacity peak around 4 K. CFAO contributes useful heat capacity at warmer temperatures. In the authors’ interpretation, the combination lets the regenerator absorb and release heat more effectively across the temperature gradient than CFAO by itself. Numerical simulations also attributed the improvement to the materials’ intrinsic contributions, rather than solely to a modeling artifact.
The paper is an accepted-paper version shared before final editing on the Nature platform; it is expected to be replaced by the Version of Record. The findings should therefore be read as a recent research result, not as a finalized product specification.

How the oxide blend is arranged in the cryocooler
A segmented regenerator, not a new refrigerant
The blend changes the solid regenerative material inside the cold head. It does not replace the cryocooler’s working gas or introduce a new circulating fluid. The tested device was a two-stage GM cryocooler with a segmented regenerator:
- Cold section: MNTO particles, positioned where the regenerator approaches the 4 K end.
- Intermediate section: CFAO particles, covering the warmer portion where their specific-heat response is useful.
- Warm section: lead particles toward the high-temperature end.
The technical report describes operation near 1.2 Hz and reports the following 4.2 K capacities. Particle size, packing density, and pressure-drop details determine how a particular regenerator would need to be engineered; the study does not establish a universal packing recipe.

Relative to the 0.117 W CFAO/Pb comparison, the approximately 0.163 W hybrid result corresponds to a gain of about 40%, matching the Communications Materials authors’ headline comparison with CFAO alone. The 0.163 W result is about three-quarters of the 0.220 W HoCu2 value, consistent with the paper’s statement that the rare-earth-free material achieved more than 70% of HoCu2 performance.
Why removing rare-earth elements matters
Many established 4 K regenerators use heavy rare-earth compounds such as HoCu2. Reducing dependence on scarce helium and heavy rare-earth elements is one motivation stated by the researchers. A material that avoids rare-earth constituents could simplify sourcing and reduce exposure to supply constraints, although this study does not provide a supply-chain analysis for every element in the new oxides.

CFAO had already established the baseline for this approach. The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) previously reported CFAO as a rare-earth-free material made from abundant elements that could reach approximately 4 K without liquid helium. The new work keeps CFAO’s warmer-range contribution and adds MNTO to strengthen the low-temperature part of the regenerator.
What the result does—and does not—show
Established by the experiment
- The tested material pair contains no rare-earth elements.
- A two-stage GM cryocooler using the segmented MNTO/CFAO arrangement delivered approximately 0.163 W at 4.2 K in the best reported configuration.
- The hybrid improved capacity by approximately 40% compared with CFAO alone.
- The performance advantage is explained by complementary magnetic specific-heat peaks, supported by numerical modeling.
Still unproven
- There is no evidence in the cited sources of a commercial oxide-blend product, supplier, licensing offer, or retrofit kit.
- The sources do not establish long-duration lifetime, repeated thermal-cycle durability, manufacturing scale, or production cost.
- The experiment used one GM cryocooler configuration. Performance in a specific MRI system, quantum-computing refrigerator, superconducting-magnet platform, or another commercial machine remains to be demonstrated.
- The reported values do not establish how pressure loss, particle degradation, or packing changes would affect a different cooler design.
Potential applications
The authors identify MRI equipment, quantum computing, and superconducting magnets as areas that depend on reliable cryogenic cooling. A rare-earth-free regenerator could be valuable in those systems if later engineering work reproduces the laboratory result at the required scale, duty cycle, and operating lifetime. For now, the evidence supports a promising material architecture rather than an installation recommendation.

Availability and practical takeaway
Readers cannot currently treat the MNTO/CFAO blend as an off-the-shelf replacement for HoCu2 or CFAO. The published evidence covers a research prototype tested near 1.2 Hz, with a best reported capacity of approximately 0.163 W at 4.2 K. Its significance is that combining temperature-complementary, rare-earth-free oxides closed part of the performance gap to HoCu2 while improving CFAO’s baseline by about 40%.
