If rare dinosaurs have disappeared from your ARK server, check configuration before changing spawn multipliers. Remove any unintended -NoDinos or -NoDinosExcept* launch argument, verify the creature is available through the selected map’s spawn entries, then back up the save and run cheat destroywilddinos to clear the existing wild population. The map will repopulate over time; a wipe is not a guarantee that a rare species appears immediately.

The same symptoms can come from a saturated or stale wild population, an incorrect map or creature ID, or hibernation behavior in single-player and non-dedicated sessions. Work through the checks in that order so you do not erase a healthy population or spend time adjusting settings that cannot create a missing species.

Why common dinosaurs can remain while rare species disappear

ARK does not roll every creature everywhere. Each map has spawn entries that define which classes can appear in a particular region or habitat. A rare dinosaur can therefore be absent even while the map is full of common animals. The server may also be preventing ordinary wild-spawn processing, or an old population may be occupying the available creature slots.

Four causes account for most reports of “only common dinos spawning”:

  • A launch argument or server setting suppresses normal wild spawns.
  • The species is not included in the selected map’s spawn entries, or the configured class/creature ID is wrong.
  • Existing wild creatures are filling the population until they are removed and replaced.
  • A single-player or non-dedicated session is hibernating areas, making the population appear frozen.

Level or difficulty settings change the distribution of levels among creatures that already have a valid spawn. They do not add a species that the map does not support and do not repair a missing spawn entry.

1. Check launch arguments and server configuration first

Inspect the server’s startup command and GameUserSettings.ini before issuing a wipe. Look specifically for these switches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Argument What it can do What to do when rare spawns are missing
-NoDinos Prevents the normal wild population from being created. Remove it unless you deliberately run a no-wild-dino server.
-NoDinosExceptForcedSpawn Restricts normal spawning to creatures explicitly forced by configuration. Remove it for ordinary map spawns, or confirm every intended species is forced.
-NoDinosExceptManualSpawn Restricts the population to manually created creatures. Remove it if the missing species should occur naturally.
-NoDinosExceptWaterSpawn Restricts normal spawning to the water-spawn category. Remove it unless a water-only setup is intentional.
-NoDinosExceptStreamingSpawn Restricts normal spawning to the streaming-spawn category. Remove it unless that restriction is part of the server design.

These options are easy to overlook because they may be supplied by a hosting panel, a startup script, or an old command-line preset rather than typed into the INI file. Check every layer that builds the launch command. A setting removed from the INI will have no effect if the host adds the same argument again at startup.

Apply a configuration change safely

  1. Tell players that you are stopping the server and record the current launch command and INI values.
  2. Stop the server cleanly rather than killing the process while it is writing the save.
  3. Remove only the unwanted -NoDinos or -NoDinosExcept* option. Do not change unrelated multipliers at the same time.
  4. Save the configuration, start the server, and watch the startup log for the effective arguments if your host exposes them.
  5. Join a known habitat and observe whether ordinary wild creatures begin appearing. If the old population is still present, continue with the controlled cleanup below.

2. Verify the map and spawn entry for the missing species

Before adjusting global numbers, confirm that the dinosaur is supported on the map currently loaded by the server. A creature can be valid in ARK generally but absent from a particular map because its spawn entry is not present there.

Check the map

Confirm the server’s active map in the startup configuration and in the save you are actually loading. Test on that map’s documented habitat rather than assuming that a location from another map uses the same entries. If the server was recently migrated, make sure the map name was not changed in the panel while the old save remained selected.

Check the spawn entry

Spawn entries control where a species can appear. Verify that the entry for the region you are visiting contains the intended creature class and that the class name or creature ID is spelled exactly as required by the configuration. A typo, an entry removed by a custom configuration, or a replacement entry that contains only common classes can make the rare dinosaur impossible to roll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use level weighting as a species fix

Difficulty and level multipliers influence the levels of creatures that have already passed the spawn check. Raising them cannot create a missing species. Restore the spawn entry first; only then should you evaluate level distribution or population multipliers.

3. Back up the save, then clear the stale wild population

After an unwanted restriction is removed and the map entry is confirmed, old wild creatures may still occupy the available population. A wild-dino wipe removes those untamed creatures so the server can build a new population from the current rules.

Use a full wipe when the whole population is suspect

  1. Stop the server and make a dated copy of the world save and configuration. Keep the backup outside the live save directory so an automated cleanup cannot overwrite it.
  2. Restart with the corrected launch arguments and map settings.
  3. From an authenticated administrator console, run cheat destroywilddinos.
  4. Wait for the command to complete, then move through the target habitat and allow the server time to repopulate.
  5. Check several areas, not just the place where you first noticed the problem. A rare species may use a different spawn entry or take longer to roll than common creatures.

The command removes untamed wild creatures. It does not remove tamed animals, so player collections and stored tames are not the target of this cleanup. It also does not change the map’s spawn entries, creature IDs, level settings, or launch arguments; those must already be correct.

Use a targeted class cleanup when one species is blocked

If one class is overrepresented or a single species is preventing a test, use the narrower command:

cheat DestroyWildDinoClasses "CreatureClassName" 1

Replace CreatureClassName with the exact class configured for the species. This removes the selected wild class while leaving other wild species in place, and new instances can spawn normally afterward. A targeted cleanup is less disruptive, but it cannot fix a launch argument that suppresses all ordinary spawns or a map that lacks the species entirely.

What a wipe does not promise

A wipe is a population reset, not a summon command. It does not guarantee that the next creature rolled will be rare, that the species will appear in the first area you visit, or that every spawn point will refill at the same speed. Running repeated wipes in quick succession can make diagnosis harder by continually deleting the population before it stabilizes.

4. Allow the map to repopulate and check the correct habitat

After a wipe, leave the server running while the normal spawn cycle rebuilds the population. Travel through the habitat associated with the species and return after other areas have had time to load. If you stay in one small region, you may be watching a single spawn entry rather than the map’s entire population.

  • Use the same map and game mode that you verified in the configuration.
  • Check more than one valid habitat for the species.
  • Give the server time between checks instead of issuing another wipe immediately.
  • Compare the target species with unrelated wild creatures. If nothing appears anywhere, the problem is broader than one rare class.
  • If common creatures return but the target does not, revisit the map’s spawn entry and class/ID before touching multipliers.

No authoritative percentage or average recovery time establishes how likely a particular rare dinosaur is to appear. Treat claims of a guaranteed timer or fixed number of minutes as anecdotal unless they are documented for your exact map, version, and session type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Account for session type and hibernation behavior

Dedicated servers and local sessions do not always present the same symptoms. Community reports describe single-player and non-dedicated sessions hibernating unloaded areas; when an area is not active, its creature population can look stalled until you return and the region streams in again. This is version-dependent community guidance, not an official universal rule.

Dedicated server checks

On a continuously running dedicated server, keep the process online after the wipe and test from multiple locations. Review restarts, crashes, and scheduled maintenance: a server that repeatedly stops before populations stabilize can look as though rare species never spawn.

Single-player or non-dedicated checks

Load the world, visit the relevant habitat, and allow it to stream fully before judging the result. Leave the area and return later rather than relying on a single load. If the species appears only after the region is revisited, hibernation or streaming behavior is a more plausible explanation than a global spawn restriction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Prevent recurring depopulation on a long-running server

When rare species repeatedly disappear after the server has been online for a long time, evaluate ServerAutoForceRespawnWildDinosInterval. The official configuration reference describes this setting as forcing wild-creature respawns after a configured interval and specifically notes its usefulness for preventing species such as Basilosaurus and Spinosaurus from becoming depopulated on long-running servers.

Use it as a prevention control, not as a substitute for correcting a bad launch argument or missing spawn entry. Record the value you choose, restart during a maintenance window, and observe whether the recurring depletion stops. If the setting is present but the species remains absent immediately after startup, return to the map and configuration checks; the interval does not make an unsupported creature valid on a map.

Choosing the least disruptive fix

Fix Scope Best use Main risk or limitation
Remove a no-dino launch argument Global configuration Normal wild creatures are suppressed across the server. Changing the wrong layer leaves the restriction active; it does not clear the old population.
Verify or restore a spawn entry One map, region, or class A species is missing while unrelated spawning works. Requires the correct map entry and creature ID; multipliers cannot replace it.
cheat destroywilddinos All untamed wild creatures The population is saturated or stale after configuration is corrected. Disrupts the entire wild population; back up first and allow time to repopulate.
cheat DestroyWildDinoClasses "CreatureClassName" 1 One wild class A single class is blocking a focused test. Cannot repair global restrictions or an unsupported map entry.
ServerAutoForceRespawnWildDinosInterval Recurring server behavior Long-running dedicated servers repeatedly lose species. Prevention setting, not an immediate rare-spawn guarantee.
Revisit an active habitat Session and streaming behavior Single-player or non-dedicated regions appear frozen. Community-reported and version-dependent; not a universal server rule.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Wiping before removing the restriction

If -NoDinos or a restrictive -NoDinosExcept* argument is still active, a wipe only removes what is present; it does not restore normal spawning. Remove the option, restart, and then perform the population reset if needed.

Changing multipliers to create a missing species

Higher difficulty, level, or population values cannot add a creature absent from the map’s spawn entries. Restore the entry and class ID first. Otherwise you can create an overcrowded server without ever producing the desired dinosaur.

Using the wrong class name

The targeted command acts on the class string you provide. If the configured class name is wrong, the command may remove nothing, leading you to believe the server is ignoring commands. Copy the exact class used by the map or configuration and test with a backup available.

Assuming a wipe is instant

Immediately checking one beach, cave, or waterway after the command can produce a false negative. Let the map rebuild, travel through valid habitats, and compare several regions before deciding that the fix failed.

Ignoring repeated restarts

A server that crashes or restarts before the wild population settles can repeatedly appear empty or biased toward common classes. Review the server’s restart history and maintenance schedule alongside the spawn configuration.

A practical diagnostic sequence

  1. Identify the scope. Decide whether all wild creatures are affected, only one rare species is absent, or the issue occurs only in a local/non-dedicated session.
  2. Inspect effective configuration. Check startup arguments and GameUserSettings.ini for every no-dino switch, including options inserted by a hosting panel.
  3. Validate map support. Confirm the active map, the relevant spawn entry, and the exact creature class or ID.
  4. Back up. Make a dated copy of the save before administrative cleanup.
  5. Reset only what is necessary. Use the full wipe for a globally stale population or the class-specific command for a focused test.
  6. Observe correctly. Keep the server running, visit the species’ valid habitat, and allow time for repopulation and streaming.
  7. Prevent recurrence. On a long-running dedicated server, evaluate ServerAutoForceRespawnWildDinosInterval and monitor subsequent population behavior.

What to record while troubleshooting

Keep a short change log containing the map name, session type, launch arguments before and after editing, the spawn entry or class ID checked, the exact command used, and the time of each restart or wipe. This prevents repeated destructive tests and makes it clear whether a change addressed the cause or merely coincided with a rare spawn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also record what you observe in at least two categories: unrelated common creatures and the missing species. If both categories are absent, continue investigating global spawning and session state. If common creatures return but the rare species does not, concentrate on map support, spawn entries, habitat, and the exact class identifier.

Bottom-line diagnosis

The reliable order is configuration, map support, controlled population reset, then session and long-running-server checks. Remove unintended no-dino restrictions, verify the species has a valid spawn entry on the selected map, back up the save, and use a full or targeted wild-dino cleanup as appropriate. Give the map time to repopulate; neither a wipe nor a respawn interval can guarantee an immediate rare spawn.
