A working Apple-1 computer once owned by Fred Hatfield sold at Bonhams for $1,148,200, including the buyer’s premium, on October 14, 2026. The result established a world auction record for a commercially sold Apple-1, exceeding the auction house’s $500,000–$800,000 estimate.
What sold and how much it brought
The Hatfield Apple-1 attracted two bidders during a 28-minute contest. The winning price of $1,148,200 includes the buyer’s premium, so it is not directly comparable with results reported without that fee.

The $1.15 million headline figure therefore describes a specific category: a commercially produced Apple-1 sold at auction. It is not the highest price ever paid for an Apple-1-related computer or board.

A rare surviving, working computer
The Apple-1 was an early personal computer sold as a bare circuit board rather than a complete modern-style system. The pre-sale description identified the Hatfield machine as one of 74 verified Apple-1 computers and among the much smaller number that remained fully functional. Working status matters because many surviving examples require restoration, have missing components or cannot be demonstrated reliably.

A direct Steve Jobs document
The lot included a January 1978 letter from Steve Jobs, then Apple Computer Inc.’s vice president of operations. Hatfield had complained to Apple about the lack of software for his Apple-1. Jobs offered to exchange the computer for an Apple II 4K motherboard plus $400. Hatfield declined, preserving the Apple-1 and the unusual correspondence that later documented its connection to Apple’s early customer history.
The available sale accounts describe the offer’s terms but do not publish a complete verbatim sentence from the letter. Claims about its wording should therefore stay limited to the documented exchange offer.

Signature and provenance
The motherboard bears Steve Wozniak’s signature. The machine’s name comes from Fred Hatfield, its original owner and a computer enthusiast. That traceable ownership history, together with the surviving Jobs letter, gives collectors evidence linking the board to a specific early user rather than treating it as an anonymous example.

These accessories add context and completeness. They are also materially different from a bare board offered without the display, input device or cassette hardware needed for an authentic period setup.
Ownership, repairs and restoration
Hatfield eventually sold the computer privately for $40,000 while it needed repairs. A later owner restored it and obtained Wozniak’s signature. Bonhams cites an approximately $686,000 sale in 2013, showing how the computer’s market value changed after restoration and stronger documentation were added.

The history does not mean every restored Apple-1 will command a similar price. Collectors assess originality, quality of repairs, whether the board works, the completeness of the accompanying equipment and the credibility of the ownership record. In this case, those factors came together with a primary document from Jobs and a Wozniak-signed motherboard.

No. The distinction depends on what is being counted. MacRumors reported that a “Celebration” Apple-1 prototype sold for $2.75 million in January 2026. That price is higher than the Hatfield result, but the prototype is a different category from a commercially sold production Apple-1.

Using the narrower commercial-production category, the Hatfield sale is the record cited for 2026. Using all Apple-1-related hardware, the prototype’s $2.75 million result is higher.
What collectors should take from the sale
- Function is a major differentiator: a demonstrably working computer is scarcer than a board needing extensive repair.
- Provenance can outweigh age alone: Hatfield’s documented ownership and Jobs correspondence connect the hardware to a specific historical episode.
- Signatures need context: Wozniak’s signature adds interest, but its impact is strongest when paired with credible ownership and restoration records.
- Completeness matters: the Koyo monitor, Panasonic cassette recorder and Apple II keyboard made the lot more than an isolated circuit board.
- Price comparisons require category checks: commercial boards, prototypes, restored examples and lots with or without buyer’s premiums should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why the Jobs letter changed the story
Without the letter, the computer would still be a scarce working Apple-1 with historical hardware. The January 1978 exchange offer adds a direct record of Apple responding to an early owner’s software complaint and attempting to move him to the newer Apple II platform. Hatfield’s decision to keep the Apple-1 preserved both the machine and evidence of that transition inside Apple’s product history.
