Google rankings and AI-search visibility are different measurements. A useful SEO Pulse report keeps them separate: conventional rank tracking shows where a page appears for a keyword, while AI monitoring shows whether systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google’s AI results mention the brand and cite its site. Tags then divide those results by intent, country, language, prompt or campaign so a single blended score does not hide useful changes.
What the three data layers measure
Start by identifying which question each metric answers. A Google position is not a proxy for an AI mention, and an AI mention is not proof that a user received a clickable link.

LLM Pulse defines a mention as the brand name appearing in the response text. It defines a citation as the site being returned as a visible link or a background source reference. A response can therefore mention a brand without linking to it.

How ChatGPT and AI-search tags make reports usable
Tags are grouping labels, not extra ranking signals. In RankPulse they organize tracked keywords. In LLM Pulse they can filter visibility data. Apply them to dimensions that change the business decision:

- Intent: separate informational, comparison, local and transactional queries.
- Prompt or query type: distinguish questions such as “best,” “how to,” troubleshooting and brand-specific prompts.
- Geography: compare countries and, where supported, cities without mixing regional results.
- Language: keep translated prompts and English prompts in separate groups.
- Campaign or topic: isolate a product launch, content hub or seasonal initiative.
- Model or engine: compare ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews when the tracker exposes that filter.
Use a consistent tag vocabulary before collecting data. For example, apply intent:comparison, country:US and campaign:spring-launch rather than creating near-duplicates such as “compare,” “comparison,” and “best products.” Tag trends are meaningful only when the same prompts and definitions remain in the set.
Mentions, visible citations and background citations
A mention without a link
An AI answer may name your company while giving no clickable source. Count that as a mention, not a citation. This distinction matters when the objective is referral traffic, source visibility or the ability for a reader to verify the claim.

Visible links and citation position
A visible citation is a link that a user can see in the answer. LLM Pulse can calculate citation rate—the share of tracked responses that cite the site—and average citation position for these visible links. A lower numerical position generally means the link appears earlier in the displayed sources, but the exact presentation depends on the engine.
Background source references
Some systems return source references to the model or interface without displaying a numbered or ordered link to the user. These background citations count as citations in the metric definition, but they have no visible citation position. Do not combine visible-position averages with background citations as if they were the same evidence.

No independently dated, cross-vendor accuracy study establishes that one of these products reports AI visibility or rankings more accurately than the others. Their official materials describe features and metric definitions, not a comparable audited benchmark.

How to build a combined rank-and-AI monitoring workflow
- Define the measurement set. List the keywords for conventional rankings and the prompts that represent how customers ask AI systems for advice. Record the target country, language, device and city where relevant.
- Tag every item before tracking. Assign stable labels for intent, topic, geography, language, model or campaign. Keep brand prompts separate from unbranded discovery prompts.
- Collect conventional ranks. Use on-demand checks for a baseline, then schedule daily checks in RankPulse when day-to-day movement matters. Review current position, change from the previous check, best-ever position and 30-day trend together.
- Collect AI responses. In an AI-visibility tracker, enable the engines and models relevant to your audience. Keep the date range and tracking cadence in the report because AI responses change over time.
- Separate outcomes. Report rank position, mention rate, citation rate, visible citation position and background citations as separate columns or charts. Never replace a missing citation with a mention.
- Add competitive context. Track competitor domains in the same prompt and keyword groups. A stable brand score can still represent a loss of share if competitors gain more mentions or citations.

How to interpret changes without overreacting
Google rank falls but AI mentions hold
This indicates a change in conventional search visibility, not necessarily a loss of recognition in AI answers. Investigate the affected keyword, device, location and competitor positions separately from the AI report.

The brand is appearing in answer text more often without receiving additional visible or background source references. Review which prompts produce unsupported mentions and whether the pages that should substantiate those answers are discoverable and relevant.

Citations rise but visible position is absent
Some or all of the increase may come from background citations. Keep those counts, but do not assign them a visible link position.
One week changes sharply
Check the date range, model mix, location, language, prompt set and tracking cadence before declaring a trend. AI-search outputs are variable, and a changed prompt sample can move the score even when the underlying content has not changed.
Choosing a tool by operational need
- Need a small-business audit and prioritized fixes: start with the SEOPulse free check, then evaluate whether weekly Pro monitoring covers the required signals.
