The fastest way to identify a Ramses II statue is to read the whole scene, not just the face. Four seated figures cut into a rock façade indicate the Great Temple at Abu Simbel; two seated figures at a pylon point to Luxor Temple; a broken colossus in a ruined west-bank funerary temple belongs to the Ramesseum; a granite figure with royal children behind its legs is the Memphis/Ptah colossus now recorded by the Grand Egyptian Museum; and a museum fragment showing only a head and upper torso is the British Museum’s Younger Memnon. A smaller granodiorite portrait with a blue khepresh crown, heqa sceptre, Nefertari and a prince beside the legs is Turin Cat. 1380.

This guide compares those monuments and objects by pose, architecture, scale, material, condition and accompanying figures. It also explains the easy mistakes: confusing Abu Simbel’s Great and Small Temples, treating the Younger Memnon as a separate king, or assuming every seated image of Ramses came from the same site. “Ramesses,” “Ramses” and “Rameses” are spelling variants for the same pharaoh.

At-a-glance visual identification

Use this table when you have a photograph but no reliable caption. The architectural setting is often more decisive than the details of the crown, which can be damaged or partly hidden.

Object or monument Pose and setting Material or condition Distinctive companions
Abu Simbel, Great Temple Four seated colossi in pairs on a rock-cut façade Monumental figures carved from the living rock; the outer-left figure is collapsed Repeated images of Ramses; standing royal figures continue inside
Luxor Temple Two seated colossi at the entrance pylon; standing statues in the first court Freestanding temple sculpture; some crowns were carved separately and fell Nemes headdress, Double Crown and a former uraeus on the brow
Ramesseum Ruined or fallen colossus in a west-bank funerary temple Large broken monument rather than an intact façade group The site’s surviving fragments include the statue later known as the Younger Memnon
Memphis/Ptah colossus Single standing royal colossus associated with the Ptah temple at Memphis Granite; now documented in the Grand Egyptian Museum collection Two royal children are carved behind the legs
Turin Cat. 1380 Complete museum portrait, standing and holding a sceptre Granodiorite; probably early in the reign Nefertari and Amunherkhepeshef appear beside the legs
Younger Memnon (British Museum EA19) Head and upper-body fragment, originally part of a pair before the Ramesseum Displaced fragment, not a complete colossus Dorsal-pillar hieroglyphs name Ramesses II

A reliable method for identifying a photograph

Captions can be wrong, and isolated close-ups remove the clues that distinguish one royal image from another. Work through these checks in order.

  1. Classify the pose. Decide whether the figure is seated, standing, or only a head and torso. A repeated row of seated figures is a strong Abu Simbel clue; a fragment immediately narrows the choice to objects such as the Younger Memnon.
  2. Read the architecture. A mountain-like rock façade means a rock-cut temple. A monumental gateway with towers is a pylon, as at Luxor. Fallen blocks and a broad ruined temple court suggest the Ramesseum. A gallery label or museum plinth indicates a collection object rather than a site monument.
  3. Count repeated figures. Four seated images in two pairs belong to the Great Temple façade at Abu Simbel. Six standing figures on the nearby Small Temple façade indicate a different monument and a joint display of Ramses and Nefertari.
  4. Inspect the legs and feet. Children carved behind the legs identify the Memphis/Ptah colossus. Nefertari and Amunherkhepeshef beside the legs identify Turin Cat. 1380. These subsidiary figures are more useful than a generic royal beard or kilt.
  5. Identify the crown and regalia. The Luxor seated image’s nemes headdress and Double Crown are useful when the pylon is cropped out. Turin Cat. 1380 uses the blue khepresh crown and the heqa sceptre, a different combination from the Luxor gateway figures.
  6. Assess preservation. An intact monumental group, a fallen torso, and a museum fragment represent different objects even if all carry Ramses’ names. Do not identify a broken head as a separate pharaoh without checking its original architectural context.
  7. Only then read inscriptions or labels. Hieroglyphs can confirm the identification, but the visual evidence should first establish which object you are looking at and whether it is in its original location.

Abu Simbel: the four seated colossi of the Great Temple

The Great Temple at Abu Simbel is the easiest Ramses II monument to recognize when the full façade is visible. Four colossal seated figures are arranged in pairs on either side of the entrance. They are carved directly into a rock façade, so the temple appears to emerge from the cliff rather than stand as a freestanding pylon.

The figures are about 20 metres (65 feet) high, according to the Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology at the University of Memphis. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities dates construction to around 1264 BC. Those figures are not four different rulers: they are repeated monumental images of Ramses II framing one temple entrance.

The collapsed statue

Viewed from outside, the statue at the far left lost its head and torso in antiquity. Large fragments remain at the base, while the other three seated figures preserve the façade’s intended rhythm. A photograph showing three complete colossi and a heap of stone at the fourth position is therefore still a view of the Great Temple, not evidence of a different site.

What is inside the Great Temple

Standing royal figures line the main hall inside. If a photograph moves from the exterior seated colossi to tall figures repeated along an interior aisle, it is still documenting the Great Temple complex. Interior standing images should not be mistaken for the separate standing colossi at the nearby Small Temple.

Do not confuse it with the Small Temple of Hathor

The nearby Small Temple has six standing colossi on its façade, not four seated figures. Four represent Ramses II and two represent Nefertari in the form of the goddess Hathor. A façade with six standing figures, especially where Nefertari’s images are visibly paired with Ramses, belongs to the Small Temple. Calling all Abu Simbel statues “the Ramses statues” loses this essential distinction between the two temples.

Luxor Temple: pylon colossi and court statues

Luxor Temple presents Ramses’ images in a conventional temple setting rather than a rock-cut façade. At the entrance pylon, two seated colossi flank the gateway. The eastern seated statue is documented at about 14 metres (46 feet) high.

Regalia that help when the pylon is cropped

The eastern seated figure wears the nemes headdress and the Double Crown. A uraeus, the rearing cobra once fixed to the brow, originally rose above the forehead. These details can identify the image in a close-up where the gateway and its companion statue are out of frame.

The first court

Beyond the pylon, the Court of Ramesses II contains standing statues placed between papyrus-bud columns. A photograph showing a standing Ramses between columns is therefore a court view, not one of the seated pylon colossi. Several crowns fell because they were carved separately from the main bodies; a missing crown does not by itself indicate a different ruler or a different temple.

How Luxor differs from Abu Simbel

Both sites can show multiple monumental images of the same king, but their settings are decisive. Abu Simbel’s figures are seated in pairs on a cliff façade. Luxor’s pair sits beside a built gateway, and its court images stand between columns. If the background is masonry, a pylon or a columned court rather than living rock, Luxor is the better identification.

The Ramesseum: a ruined funerary colossus

The Ramesseum was Ramses II’s funerary temple on Luxor’s west bank. Its principal colossus no longer stands intact: the monument is encountered as a ruined or fallen figure amid the remains of the temple. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities describes the statue as more than 17 metres high and weighing about 1,000 tons.

Those measurements describe the original monument, not a complete statue that visitors can now see upright. A photograph dominated by a massive fallen torso, broken legs or scattered blocks in a funerary-temple ruin points to the Ramesseum rather than to Abu Simbel’s preserved façade group or Luxor’s gateway.

Why the Ramesseum creates identification problems

Ramses’ name appears on more than one object connected with the site, and later displays may separate fragments from their original architectural position. The safest description is therefore “a Ramses II colossus from the Ramesseum” unless the image clearly shows the specific fragment known as the Younger Memnon.

The Younger Memnon: a fragment from the Ramesseum pair

The Younger Memnon, British Museum object EA19, is not a separate king and not a complete standing statue. It is the surviving head and upper body of one of the pair of colossi that stood before the Ramesseum’s entrance. Its dorsal pillar carries hieroglyphic names and titles identifying Ramesses II.

Look for the truncated shoulders and the absence of the lower body. A museum photograph of a polished head and torso on its own is fundamentally different from an intact colossus at Abu Simbel or a full standing portrait in Turin. The name “Younger Memnon” is a modern art-historical label for this displaced fragment, not evidence that the subject was another pharaoh.

Recognizing it in a museum context

The British Museum display provides the kind of controlled, isolated view that removes the Ramesseum’s architectural clues. In that situation, the fragmentary condition and the inscription-bearing back pillar are the key identifiers. If a caption calls it a Ramesseum statue but the photograph shows only the head and upper body, the image is most likely referring to the Younger Memnon.

Memphis/Ptah colossus in the Grand Egyptian Museum record

The Memphis/Ptah colossus is a single monumental royal image originally associated with the temple of Ptah at Memphis. The Grand Egyptian Museum collection record gives its height as 1,135 centimetres and identifies granite as its material.

The children behind the legs

Two royal children, Khaemwaset and Bintanath, are carved behind the legs. Their placement is the quickest visual test: if a standing granite Ramses has small royal figures emerging behind both legs, it is this Memphis/Ptah colossus rather than one of the repeated Abu Simbel façade figures.

Why it is not an Abu Simbel statue

Abu Simbel is an architectural group of four seated images cut into a rock façade. The Memphis/Ptah object is one freestanding granite colossus. Even if a cropped photograph hides the children, the single-figure composition and stone surface distinguish it from the repeated façade at Abu Simbel.

Turin Cat. 1380: an early-reign portrait with family figures

Museo Egizio catalogue entry Cat. 1380 records a granodiorite portrait of Ramses II from the Temple of Amun at Karnak in Thebes. The king wears the blue khepresh crown and holds the heqa sceptre. Nefertari and the prince Amunherkhepeshef appear beside his legs.

Use style and provenance together

The catalogue places the work probably early in Ramses’ reign. It also notes a stylistic resemblance to Seti I and no visible reworking. That combination calls for a qualified identification: it is attributed to Ramses II, while its early-reign style reflects the artistic traditions associated with his predecessor. The Karnak provenance supports the identification but does not turn the portrait into a temple façade statue.

Why it looks different from the colossi

Cat. 1380 is a museum portrait designed to be viewed as one complete standing figure with a sceptre and small family members. It is not one of the seated gateway images at Luxor, not a fragment from the Ramesseum and not part of Abu Simbel’s repeated rock-cut group. The blue crown is especially helpful when the lower legs or provenance label are not visible.

A historical response to the portrait

The Museo Egizio catalogue quotes Jean-François Champollion’s 1824 reaction: “the beauty and the admirable perfection of this colossal figure (…): for six whole months I have seen it every day, and always I have the impression of seeing it for the first time.” The quotation is about the impact of the image, not a measurement or a change in attribution, so it should not be used to identify another Ramses statue.

Common misidentifications and how to correct them

“All Abu Simbel statues are the same”

Separate the Great Temple from the Small Temple of Hathor. The Great Temple has four seated Ramses figures on its façade, with the outer-left one collapsed. The Small Temple has six standing colossi: four Ramses figures and two Nefertari figures represented as Hathor.

“The Younger Memnon is another pharaoh”

It is a fragment from a Ramses II pair at the Ramesseum. The hieroglyphic names and titles on its dorsal pillar identify Ramesses II.

“A seated Ramses must be Abu Simbel”

Luxor also has seated Ramses statues, including the eastern pylon colossus. Check whether the figure is embedded in a rock façade or positioned beside a built gateway.

“Every large Ramses is a paired façade group”

The Memphis/Ptah colossus is a single granite image, and Turin Cat. 1380 is a single granodiorite portrait. Their associated figures, materials and museum records provide stronger evidence than size alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A missing crown changes the identity”

At Luxor, several crowns were separately carved and later fell. Crown damage is a preservation clue, not a standalone identification criterion.

A compact field checklist

  • Is the figure seated, standing or fragmentary?
  • Are there four seated figures on a rock façade, six standing figures at the Small Temple, two seated figures at a pylon, or one isolated museum object?
  • Do children appear behind the legs? Consider the Memphis/Ptah colossus.
  • Do Nefertari and Amunherkhepeshef stand beside the legs, with a blue khepresh crown and heqa sceptre? Consider Turin Cat. 1380.
  • Is only a head and upper torso preserved, with an inscription-bearing back pillar? Consider the Younger Memnon.
  • Does a ruined west-bank funerary temple surround a fallen giant? Identify the Ramesseum context.
  • Does the image show the nemes and Double Crown at a temple gateway? Check Luxor Temple.
  • Does a photograph show living rock rather than masonry? Check Abu Simbel’s Great Temple before considering other seated statues.

Why context beats facial resemblance

Ramses II ruled for decades and commissioned images in several formats: repeated façade colossi, pylon statues, court figures, funerary-temple monuments and smaller family portraits. Royal facial conventions can look similar across those works, while architecture and subsidiary figures remain specific. Pose, setting, scale, material and preservation therefore form a more dependable identification system than a visual guess based on the face alone.

Once those clues establish the object, crowns, sceptres and hieroglyphic titles can refine the answer. This approach also preserves the historical distinction between an intact monument, a fallen colossus and a museum fragment—three different kinds of evidence that should not be collapsed into one generic “Ramses statue.”
