In everyday computer talk, “memory” usually means RAM. Technically, though, RAM is one kind of memory—not a synonym for every kind. RAM is temporary working space for data a computer is using; an SSD is storage that keeps files when the computer is off.
Are RAM and memory the same thing?
It depends on how the word “memory” is being used. In a conversation about a computer’s specifications, someone asking how much memory it has often means how much RAM it has. In technical usage, memory is a broader category that includes RAM and other types or levels, such as ROM, cache, and registers. IBM describes RAM as memory hardware used to temporarily hold data for active operations.
What RAM does
RAM provides fast, temporary space for data the computer is actively using. The processor can access that working data while applications and system tasks run. Most semiconductor RAM is volatile: its contents are lost when power is removed, as the Computer History Museum’s glossary explains.
RAM versus SSD storage
RAM and an SSD serve different purposes. RAM holds active working data temporarily; an SSD stores files persistently so they remain available after the computer is shut down. IBM distinguishes memory used for data a processor is working with from storage used to retain data for later retrieval.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
| Feature | RAM | SSD storage |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Working space for data in active use | Persistent storage for files and other data |
| Retains data without power | Most semiconductor RAM is volatile and loses its contents when power is removed | Retains stored data without continuous power |
What “memory” means when checking a computer
If a PC listing or specification says “memory,” check the context. In a hardware specification, it commonly refers to RAM capacity. If you want to know how much room there is for saved files, look for the storage capacity and type, such as an SSD. The two capacities describe different components and are not interchangeable.

Physical form factor is one compatibility requirement: desktop memory modules are commonly DIMMs, while laptops commonly use smaller SO-DIMMs. The form factor alone does not establish that a module will work in a particular computer. Check the device or motherboard specifications for supported memory before buying. IBM’s DIMM overview explains the common module types.
