Neither a higher data rate nor a lower CAS latency wins by itself. Gaming memory is fastest when transfer rate, complete timings, memory-controller ratio, capacity and stability work together. Calculate real latency in nanoseconds, then check whether your CPU and motherboard can run the profile in its low-latency mode.
As a practical starting point, a stable dual-channel kit with enough capacity and a balanced speed/timing combination is usually better than the highest advertised MT/s number. CPU-limited esports and simulation games can benefit from tuning; GPU-limited 1440p and 4K games usually show smaller gains.
What RAM speed and timings actually measure
MT/s is the useful term for DDR memory
Retail specifications often write “DDR5-6000 MHz” or “DDR5-7200 MHz,” but the number normally describes millions of transfers per second (MT/s). DDR memory transfers data on both clock edges, so the electrical clock is half the effective transfer rate. Using MT/s avoids confusing the transfer rate with the underlying clock.

That extra bandwidth can help a processor feed many cores, integrated graphics, game engines that stream large data sets, and workloads that are limited by memory throughput.

Timings are delays measured in memory cycles
Timings are usually shown as a sequence such as 30-36-36-76. The first value, CAS latency or CL, is the number of memory cycles between a read command and the start of the requested data. The remaining primary timings describe other row and column delays. CL is easy to compare, but it is only one part of the delay path.
Because timings are cycle counts, the same CL can represent different time delays at different transfer rates. A CL30 kit at 6,000 MT/s and a CL38 kit at 7,600 MT/s can therefore have the same first-word latency.
Convert speed and CL to real latency
Kingston’s conversion is:
Effective CAS latency (nanoseconds) = CL × (2000 ÷ MT/s)
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe result is the approximate time for the CAS portion of a read. It is not the complete end-to-end memory access time, which also depends on other timings, command scheduling, cache behavior and the platform’s memory-controller mode.
| Memory specification | Calculation | Approximate CAS latency |
|---|---|---|
| DDR5-6000 CL30 | 30 × (2000 ÷ 6000) | 10 ns |
| DDR5-7600 CL38 | 38 × (2000 ÷ 7600) | 10 ns |
| DDR5-6000 CL36 | 36 × (2000 ÷ 6000) | 12 ns |
| DDR5-7200 CL34 | 34 × (2000 ÷ 7200) | 9.4 ns |
The first two rows illustrate why “lower CL” is not a complete buying rule: both calculate to about 10 ns despite very different labels. Intel likewise describes memory performance as a combination of operating frequency and latency characteristics, not one number.

Compare the full primary timing set when possible
Two kits with the same calculated CAS latency can still perform differently if tRCD, tRP, tRAS, command rate, subtimings or memory-controller behavior differ. Treat the CL calculation as a quick filter. For a close decision, compare the complete primary timing string and the profile voltage, then use independent results from your CPU and games.
Why games respond differently to memory changes
CPU-limited games expose memory differences
At a high frame rate, the processor must prepare simulation, draw calls, artificial-intelligence decisions and asset updates quickly. A game that is waiting on the CPU can show higher average FPS or better 1% lows when memory bandwidth rises or access latency falls. Competitive esports settings, large strategy simulations and some open-world scenes are common examples of CPU-limited situations.
GPU-limited games hide most RAM tuning
When the graphics processor is already spending most of each frame rendering pixels, changing system memory rarely moves average FPS much. At 1440p and 4K with high visual settings, the GPU is more often the limiting component. Faster RAM can still help frame-time consistency in particular scenes, but an expensive memory upgrade is unlikely to produce a proportional gain.
Kingston’s benchmark suite found that speed gains varied substantially by title, with CPU-intensive games responding more than GPU-dependent games. Do not apply one game’s percentage to every workload.
Platform ratios can outweigh the kit label
Intel Alder Lake and gear modes
On Intel Alder Lake systems, TechSpot found tested DDR5 configurations operating in Gear 2. In that mode, the memory controller runs at a different ratio from the memory data rate, increasing effective latency. In several latency-sensitive results, DDR4-3200 and DDR4-3600 CL16 therefore beat the tested DDR5 kits despite DDR5’s higher transfer rate.

This is a platform-specific result, not proof that DDR4 is universally faster. BIOS settings, processor sample, motherboard firmware and the chosen memory profile determine whether a particular kit uses Gear 1, Gear 2 or another ratio.
Later LGA1700 comparisons can favor DDR5
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 comparison of Intel LGA1700 systems measured an overall 11%–14% lower gaming performance with DDR4 than DDR5 across 15 games, with some titles showing losses above 20%. The tests used 1080p to emphasize CPU differences. Those percentages apply to that processor generation, test configuration and game set; they are not a universal DDR4-versus-DDR5 multiplier.
Check the controller before buying a high-bin kit
A memory kit’s XMP or EXPO profile is an overclocked operating point unless the CPU and board documentation explicitly lists it as standard support. Verify the processor’s memory-controller limits, the motherboard’s qualified-vendor list (QVL), supported profile type and the ratio or gear mode at the target speed. A slightly slower profile that runs in the preferred ratio can beat a faster profile forced into a higher-latency mode.
Capacity and channel layout come first
Frequency and timings cannot compensate for insufficient capacity or a single-channel installation. Meet the game’s memory requirement, then install matched modules in the motherboard’s recommended paired slots so the system operates in dual channel.
Kingston’s comparative tests used 32 GB kits made of two 16 GB modules in dual channel. That is evidence for the tested configuration, not a guarantee that every game needs 32 GB. If your workload exceeds available memory, the operating system can page data to storage; the resulting stutter is far more damaging than a small timing difference.

- Do not mix unrelated kits to reach a target speed; mixed modules may fall back to slower settings or fail training.
How to compare two gaming kits step by step
- Write down the complete specifications. Record MT/s, CL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS, rated voltage, capacity, module count and whether the profile is XMP, EXPO or another standard.
- Calculate CAS latency. Apply
CL × (2000 ÷ MT/s)to each kit. Keep the units in nanoseconds and round consistently. - Compare the other primary timings. If one kit has a lower tRCD or tRP at the same CAS latency, it may offer a small access-time advantage; do not infer the size of that advantage without measurements.
- Check the platform ratio. Look in the CPU and motherboard manuals and in firmware settings for Gear 1/Gear 2, synchronous/asynchronous modes or equivalent controller ratios. A profile that changes the ratio can erase the benefit of extra MT/s.
- Confirm profile and QVL support. Make sure the board supports the memory type and profile, and check its QVL for the exact module part number when available.
- Prioritize capacity and dual channel. Choose the configuration that meets the game and application workload before paying for an extreme frequency bin.
- Validate stability. Enable the profile, boot repeatedly, run a memory stress test and play the games that matter to you. Watch for crashes, application errors, corrupted archives and intermittent frame-time spikes.
- Measure your own limit. Test the same game, resolution, graphics settings and driver version with a repeatable save or benchmark. Record average FPS and 1% lows; a change that appears only in a synthetic test may not matter in play.
DDR5-6000 CL30 versus DDR5-7200 CL38
These specifications are a useful example because the first-word latency is effectively tied:
| Factor | DDR5-6000 CL30 | DDR5-7200 CL38 |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer rate | 6,000 MT/s | 7,200 MT/s |
| Calculated CAS latency | 10 ns | About 10.6 ns |
| Theoretical bandwidth per 64-bit channel | About 48 GB/s | About 57.6 GB/s |
| What it favors | Balanced latency and bandwidth | Higher bandwidth if the platform runs it efficiently |
| Main risk | Little bandwidth headroom for unusually demanding workloads | Higher controller stress, looser other timings or a less favorable ratio |
The 7,200 MT/s kit supplies more theoretical bandwidth, while the 6,000 MT/s kit has the lower calculated CAS delay in this particular comparison. Which is faster depends on the processor, board, complete timings, ratio mode and game. If the faster profile requires an asynchronous controller setting or is unstable, the nominal bandwidth advantage may not appear in frame rates.

High-refresh 1080p and esports
Choose a balanced kit with low calculated latency and enough MT/s for the platform’s efficient controller ratio. This is where memory tuning is most likely to show up in CPU-limited frame rates and 1% lows. Validate with the esports titles and refresh rate you actually use rather than relying on a specification hierarchy.
1440p gaming
At 1440p, the workload is often mixed. A mainstream, stable dual-channel kit is generally the sensible choice; spend more on frequency or tighter timings only if your processor is demonstrably CPU-limited in the games you play.
4K and heavily ray-traced games
GPU load usually dominates at 4K and with demanding ray tracing. Adequate capacity, stable profiles and the correct channel configuration matter more than chasing the smallest possible CAS figure.

Simulation, strategy and large open worlds
These workloads can be unusually sensitive to CPU throughput, memory latency and frame-time consistency. Compare complete timings and 1% lows, and test late-game or crowded scenes where simulation work is highest.
Stability, firmware and troubleshooting
The profile will not boot
- Power off and use the motherboard’s memory-reset procedure.
- Boot at the default safe speed, update firmware if the board maker documents memory-compatibility improvements, and retry the profile.
- Use the board’s recommended two-slot layout and test one matched module at a time if training repeatedly fails.
- Reduce MT/s or relax timings when the CPU’s controller cannot sustain the advertised profile.
Games crash after enabling XMP or EXPO
Intermittent crashes, shader compilation errors and corrupted compressed files can indicate marginal memory stability even when the desktop appears normal. Return to default settings to confirm the diagnosis, then test a lower data rate, a less aggressive profile or manually increased stability margins within the limits documented for your platform. Do not treat a single successful boot as proof of stability.
Performance is lower than expected
- Confirm the profile actually applied in firmware or a trusted system-information utility.
- Check whether the controller switched to Gear 2 or another asynchronous ratio.
- Verify dual-channel operation and that both modules are detected at the intended capacity.
- Retest with consistent BIOS, graphics-driver, resolution and game settings; CPU and GPU limits can mask a memory change.
Is a product such as DDR5-6400 CL32 a sensible target?
A 32 GB (2×16 GB) Kingston FURY Renegade DDR5-6400 CL32 kit is one example of the balanced class used in Kingston’s benchmark setup. Its calculated CAS latency is 10 ns, using the formula above. That label alone does not establish gaming performance for your system: confirm the exact kit’s profile, motherboard QVL, processor support, operating voltage and controller ratio before purchase.

A practical decision rule
For a new gaming build, select the memory generation required by the motherboard, then choose sufficient dual-channel capacity. Among compatible kits, compare calculated latency and full primary timings while favoring the highest transfer rate that your CPU and board can run in their efficient ratio. For a CPU-limited game, pay for a faster or tighter kit only when repeatable tests show better average FPS or 1% lows. For a GPU-limited game, put the budget toward the graphics card or capacity before extreme memory specifications.
