Rainbow Six Siege and Rainbow Six Tactics treat destruction as a tactical system, but they ask you to use it at different speeds. Siege makes you reshape a map during a live attacker-versus-defender round. A breach can open a route, expose a sightline, remove cover, or create a new vulnerability before the other team can react. Tactics places the same broad spatial idea inside turn-based squad planning: you choose what to break, arrange your operators, and use Breach Planning to execute a synchronized assault.

That difference in timing is more important than the shared presence of destructible walls. Siege rewards fast information, communication, and adaptation. Tactics, as described by Ubisoft for its upcoming release, rewards deliberate sequencing and coordinated execution. The games should not be assumed to use identical materials, physics, turn economies, or destruction limits.

What destruction does in each game

Siege turns a familiar room into a changing battlefield

Ubisoft describes procedural destruction in Rainbow Six Siege as central to changing the environment and influencing the outcome of a round. In practical terms, a wall, floor, hatch, or piece of cover is not always a permanent boundary. Attackers can use breaching charges and other destructive tools to open pathways and lines of sight, including through trap doors. Defenders can also reshape a site: shotgun blasts can create sightlines, while explosive gadgets can make unexpected openings or weak points.

The tactical value comes from the geometry that remains after the blast or breach. A new angle may let an attacker watch a doorway without entering it. A hole may connect two rooms, shorten a rotation, or expose a player who believed a wall was safe. The same opening can help the opposing team observe the breach, challenge the angle, or rotate through it. Destruction therefore creates opportunity and exposure at the same time.

Tactics makes the spatial choice a planned squad action

Rainbow Six Tactics is presented by Ubisoft as turn-based combat with destructible environments. Its announced destruction uses are specific: break walls to open sightlines, remove enemy cover, or create new entry points as a situation develops. Breach Planning then lets players plan actions for the active squad and execute a coordinated assault. The important change is that the player is not merely reacting to a hole appearing during a live exchange; the player is deciding how a sequence of operators will exploit the altered space.

Xbox Wire’s 2026 overview says Tactics carries over 15 operators from Siege, each with unique abilities, gadgets, and skill trees. It describes Breach as a synchronized assault in which active operators can briefly move at once. Those details establish the intended squad-planning frame, but they do not establish every final rule for movement, materials, action points, or destructibility.

How to use destruction in Siege

Attackers: create a useful angle, not just a hole

An attacker should start with the tactical purpose of a breach. A route breach is meant to change where the team can enter or rotate. A sightline breach is meant to let an operator watch, pressure, or deny a specific area without crossing the threshold. A hatch breach changes vertical access and can force defenders to reposition. These purposes are different, so the correct placement and timing differ as well.

  1. Scout before committing. Ubisoft’s launch guidance recommends using drones to gather information. Confirm where defenders, cameras, traps, and likely challenges are before spending a breaching tool.
  2. Choose the smallest opening that serves the job. A narrow angle may provide the observation you need while exposing less of your team. A larger route can be justified when the team must pass through or pressure multiple positions.
  3. Coordinate the breach with a teammate. A newly opened angle is strongest when another operator can watch a different approach, cover the planter or entry player, or exploit the defender’s forced movement.
  4. Recheck the space after the geometry changes. The breach itself can reveal a defender, but it also creates a place from which the defender can watch you. Treat the opening as a new line of contact, not as automatic control of the room.

Destruction is especially valuable when it compresses the defender’s choices. An opening that threatens a rotation and a sightline at once can make a position difficult to hold. However, a breach made without information may announce your plan, consume a limited gadget, and give defenders a predictable angle to contest.

Defenders: reshape the site before attackers dictate the map

Defenders are not limited to preserving the original room layout. Ubisoft’s guide specifically notes that shotgun blasts can create lines of sight and that explosive gadgets can make unexpected openings. Those actions can support an unexpected peek, a crossfire, a rotation, or a way to watch an approach without standing in the obvious doorway.

  • Create defensive sightlines deliberately. A hole should connect a defender’s position to a meaningful approach or objective area. Random openings can expose the defender without providing useful information.
  • Preserve a safe fallback. Once a wall or cover piece is removed, the defender may be visible from another angle. Build the new sightline into a position that allows retreat if attackers challenge it.
  • Use openings to create uncertainty. An unexpected angle can make attackers spend time droning, pre-aiming, or rerouting. Its value is not only the number of eliminations it produces; it can delay an assault and protect the objective.
  • Expect attackers to exploit your own geometry. A defender-made hole can become an attacker’s line of sight after a takeover. Avoid treating a created angle as permanently friendly.

Information determines whether destruction pays off

Siege’s destruction is an information problem as much as a building problem. Ubisoft recommends attacker drones and defender camera information, and it advises pairing unique gadgets with teammates. Those recommendations explain why a breach made in isolation is weaker than one supported by reconnaissance. Information tells you which angle matters, whether the target space is occupied, and how the other team can answer.

A practical cycle is observe, alter, verify, exploit. Observe the room and likely defender positions. Alter the geometry with the appropriate gadget or weapon. Verify what the opening actually exposes, because smoke, cover, distance, and a defender’s repositioning can change its value. Exploit the moment with a teammate or a follow-up action before the opponent restores control.

Why Siege destruction changes risk and exposure

Every opening is also an invitation

When a wall or floor is removed, the team that created the opening does not receive exclusive ownership of it. A new route can be used by either side; a new sightline can be watched from either direction. This is why destruction should be evaluated as a trade: what space becomes accessible, who can see through it, and which player has the better timing to use it?

Attackers often gain initiative from an opening because they chose when to create it, but defenders can answer with a reposition, a camera call, a counter-angle, or a different route. Defenders may gain a surprise angle, but they also give attackers another surface to drone and pre-aim. The strongest play is therefore not the most dramatic destruction; it is the change that improves your team’s next action while limiting the opponent’s immediate answer.

Explosions are not simply “damage plus debris”

Ubisoft’s Y5S1 developer blog separates damage to players from destruction of the environment. It says the game evaluates potentially affected entities, uses raycasts and object metadata to determine whether damage is blocked, and applies distance-based damage falloff. The post also explains that damage and destruction can have different ranges and shapes. In the same historical update, Ubisoft described a shrapnel change that reduced damage when destructible objects were hit by raycasts.

Those details are useful for understanding why an explosion can alter cover without producing the same result on every player behind it. They are tied to the Y5S1 implementation and should not be treated as a guarantee of current live behavior without checking newer patch notes. The strategic lesson remains stable: an explosive action can change the map and threaten players through different calculations, so do not assume that destroying a surface proves that every target behind it is equally vulnerable.

How Tactics changes the decision

Destruction becomes an objective for the turn

In a turn-based system, the question is less “Can I make this opening before someone shoots me?” and more “What future sequence does this opening enable?” Breaking a wall may expose an enemy, remove cover that protects a high-value target, or let another operator enter from a new direction. The value is measured across the planned squad action rather than only the instant of impact.

Before selecting a breach, identify the immediate obstacle and the follow-up it enables. If cover is the obstacle, the follow-up may be a shot from another operator. If a closed wall blocks access, the follow-up may be an entry and a synchronized attack. If a sightline is the objective, the follow-up may be overwatch or a crossfire. The announced mechanics support these categories, but they do not establish exact damage numbers or action costs.

Breach Planning rewards sequencing

Ubisoft presents Breach Planning as a way to plan coordinated actions for the active squad and then execute a synchronized assault. That makes order and timing central. A breach performed before the operators are positioned may expose the squad without an immediate advantage. The same breach included in a planned sequence can let one operator open the space, another exploit the new line of sight, and a third secure the entry.

  1. Define the target space. Decide whether the planned assault is meant to reach an objective, remove a defender from cover, or establish a firing angle.
  2. Assign the operator that changes the geometry. Place the operator with the relevant gadget or ability where the breach can support the rest of the squad.
  3. Place the exploitation actions. Arrange the operators who will shoot, move through the entry point, or cover the newly exposed lane.
  4. Check mutual exposure. A synchronized move still creates danger if every operator enters the same angle or if the breach leaves the squad visible from an unaddressed position.
  5. Execute only when the sequence has a clear payoff. The purpose of planning is to make several actions reinforce one another, not to make destruction look spectacular.

Cover removal and entry creation are different problems

Removing enemy cover is a direct way to improve a shot or deny a safe position. Creating an entry point is a movement decision: it changes where the squad can stand and which defenses can be approached. Opening a sightline is an observation and targeting decision. Tactics’ announced destruction supports all three, but each should be planned around a different next action.

A cover-removal plan can be efficient when another operator is already ready to attack the exposed target. An entry plan needs enough squad support to prevent the first operator through the opening from becoming isolated. A sightline plan needs a position that remains useful after the enemy reacts. Keeping these goals separate prevents a breach from becoming an unfocused action that does not improve the rest of the turn.

The 15-operator roster broadens the planning question

Xbox Wire reports that Tactics includes 15 operators carried over from Siege, with unique abilities, gadgets, and skill trees. That roster count is not a measure of destruction’s effectiveness, but it indicates that squad composition will shape how a player converts a broken wall or removed cover into progress. The relevant question is not which operator is universally best; it is which available abilities make the chosen opening safer, more informative, or more decisive.

Timing and control: the decisive difference

Question Siege Tactics
When do you decide? During a live round, often with incomplete information and an immediate threat of interruption. During turn-based planning, where the announced Breach system lets you arrange a coordinated sequence before execution.
What can the opponent do next? React immediately by watching, rotating, contesting, or exploiting the new opening. Respond within the turn-based structure; exact reaction and action rules are not established by the cited descriptions.
What makes a breach valuable? It creates a timely route or angle that teammates can use before the opponent stabilizes. It improves a planned chain of squad actions by exposing, displacing, or bypassing the target.
What is the main failure? Spending a gadget or revealing an angle without enough information or support. Planning a breach whose follow-up actions do not exploit the new space; the final game’s exact constraints are not yet confirmed.

This is why the games should not be judged by asking which one has “better destruction.” Siege’s destruction is a live contest over changing geometry. Tactics’ destruction is presented as a controlled planning instrument. The same visual event—a wall disappearing—represents different kinds of player agency.

Worked tactical situations

Siege: a route breach under uncertainty

Suppose an attacker needs access to an objective room but does not know whether a defender is holding the adjacent corridor. The correct sequence is not to breach immediately and walk through. Drone the corridor, identify cameras or traps, coordinate a teammate to watch the likely defender angle, and then create the route. After the breach, recheck the opening and the corridor because the destruction has changed what both teams can see. If the defender has rotated, the new route may be more valuable as a threat than as an entrance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Siege: a defender-made sightline

A defender can use a shotgun blast to create a line of sight toward an approach. The opening should be placed where camera information or a teammate’s call makes an attacker likely to appear. Once created, the defender must account for the reverse angle: an attacker who discovers the hole may use it to pre-aim the defender’s position. The sightline works best as part of a fallback or crossfire rather than as a solo peek that cannot be abandoned.

Tactics: breach, expose, synchronize

In Tactics, imagine an enemy protected by cover between the squad and an entry route. The planned action can assign one operator to remove the cover, another to use the newly opened sightline, and a third to move through the entry point during the synchronized Breach. The value comes from all three actions being linked. If the squad cannot exploit the exposed space in the same planned assault, the destruction may not justify its cost or risk.

What the published evidence does—and does not—establish

There is no verified destruction win-rate comparison

The available official material does not provide a comparative statistic showing how destruction changes wins, rounds, eliminations, or player performance in either game. The reported figure of 15 operators in Tactics is a roster count, not an outcome measure. Any claim that one title’s destruction produces a specific percentage advantage would go beyond the published evidence.

Tactics’ final mechanics may change

The Ubisoft store page cited for this comparison described Tactics as “Coming soon” and identified PC activation through Ubisoft Connect. That wording does not confirm a launch date. Announced feature descriptions, availability, and final rules can change before release, so details such as turn economy, exact material behavior, destruction limits, and reaction rules should be checked against later official material.

Siege changes over time

Siege’s explosion explanation in the Y5S1 developer blog is a historical technical account. It is valuable for understanding the distinction between environmental destruction and player damage, but older patch specifics should not be presented as guaranteed current behavior. For live tactical decisions, consult the current patch documentation and in-game behavior.

Which game fits your preferred tactical style?

Choose Siege’s destruction model if you enjoy adaptation

  • You want to read information quickly and make a breach while opponents can immediately answer.
  • You enjoy coordinating drones, cameras, gadgets, and crossfires around a changing room layout.
  • You prefer tactical decisions where the value of an opening depends on timing, communication, and execution under pressure.

Watch Tactics if you prefer deliberate squad planning

  • You want to decide how a wall, cover position, or entry point supports a complete turn sequence.
  • You enjoy arranging several operators so a breach and its follow-up actions reinforce one another.
  • You prefer evaluating a spatial change before committing the squad to a synchronized assault.

Neither approach makes destruction a cosmetic feature. Siege asks whether you can create and exploit a temporary advantage before the other team adapts. Tactics asks whether you can design a sequence in which the altered space makes every active operator more effective. That distinction—live adaptation versus planned execution—is the clearest answer to how destruction changes the strategy across the two games.
