Choose Rainbow Six Siege for tactical player-versus-player matches built around breaching, defending and outsmarting another team. Choose Rainbow Six Extraction for cooperative missions against alien enemies, playable solo or with up to two other people. Neither is a universal winner: the right pick depends mainly on whether you want to compete against players or work with friends against the game.

Matches revolve around information and preparation
In Siege’s central attack-versus-defense format, one team attacks while the other sets up to defend. Attackers scout, coordinate and breach; defenders reinforce and prepare the objective. The official guide emphasizes observation tools, information sharing and communication, making teamwork and situational awareness central to the match rather than optional extras. The signature format is 5v5, though Siege also offers other modes, including the 6v6 Dual Front mode.

Siege is a better fit if you enjoy learning how locations work, choosing operators for a plan and adapting when opponents counter it. Since the opposing team is made up of players, encounters are competitive and unpredictable in a different way from scripted or AI-controlled threats. A headset with a microphone can help teammates communicate, but neither game requires a particular accessory.

It is the clearer pick for an evolving seasonal service
Ubisoft’s roadmap, last updated September 8, 2026, lists Year 11 Season 3, Operation Split Fire, as the latest release at that time. That makes Siege the better-supported choice in the available evidence for someone specifically seeking a game with a visible current seasonal roadmap. Roadmap targets may change, and this does not establish that Extraction is unavailable or unsupported.
Choose Extraction if you want cooperative PvE
Work together against an alien threat
Extraction replaces Siege’s opposing player team with alien enemies. You and your squad select operators, enter containment zones and complete missions while dealing with threats that can change across an incursion. Ubisoft describes the game as playable alone or in squads of up to three, so it suits both solo play and small-group cooperation.

- You want to cooperate against alien enemies: choose Extraction.
- You like learning maps, roles and tactical setups: Siege is the closer fit.
- You want solo play or a small co-op squad: Extraction explicitly supports solo play and groups of up to three.
- You want the more clearly documented ongoing seasonal roadmap: Siege has the stronger current evidence in Ubisoft’s September 2026 roadmap.

For most players, the deciding question is simple: do you want tactical matches against other players, or cooperative missions against aliens? Siege is the pick for competitive attack-and-defense play and the more clearly documented seasonal roadmap. Extraction is the pick for solo or small-squad PvE. Choose by opponent and session style, not by expecting one game to be a direct substitute for the other.
