The Union Cabinet has approved a 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) for eligible railway employees for financial year 2025-26. The official maximum is Rs.17,951 per eligible employee. It is a maximum amount, not an automatic identical payment for everyone: where monthly wages exceed Rs.7,000, the Railway Board’s rule requires the PLB calculation to use Rs.7,000 as the wage ceiling.
What the 78-day railway bonus includes
The Cabinet decision covers 78 days of PLB for financial year 2025-26. The government says the payment will be released before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holiday period, making it the annual festive-season bonus commonly described as the railway employees’ Diwali bonus.

How much will each employee receive?
Rs.17,951 is the government’s stated maximum payable amount for 78 days. The Press Information Bureau’s 14 October 2026 announcement says: “The maximum amount payable per eligible railway employee is Rs.17,951/- for 78 days.” Employees should therefore read the figure as up to Rs.17,951, rather than a guaranteed amount for every person covered by the scheme.

Is the bonus calculated on basic pay?
The 78-day announcement refers to wages for calculation purposes, but it does not mean that an employee’s unrestricted basic pay is simply multiplied by 78/30. The Railway Board order states that when wages are more than Rs.7,000 per month, PLB must be calculated as though the wages were Rs.7,000 per month.

Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) personnel are excluded under the Railway Board order cited for this decision. Individual eligibility still depends on the applicable service records and departmental rules; the Cabinet headline alone does not establish eligibility for every railway worker.

The government linked the decision to railway performance during 2025-26. Ministry of Railways figures cited in the Cabinet announcement report 1,670 million tonnes of cargo and nearly 7.41 billion passengers. The stated purpose of PLB is to recognise employees’ contribution to that performance and encourage continued productivity improvements.

Because PLB is tied to a financial year and approved through a government decision, it should not be treated as a change to pay scales, dearness allowance, pensionable basic pay or a recurring monthly entitlement.
How this compares with the previous year
The 2025-26 decision continues the established annual PLB pattern. For financial year 2024-25, the Cabinet also approved 78 days and specified the same Rs.17,951 maximum.

The higher 2025-26 beneficiary count and financial implication do not change the stated maximum or the Rs.7,000 wage ceiling. They reflect the scale of the approved coverage and outlay for that financial year.
When will railway employees receive the payment?
The Cabinet announcement says payment will be made before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. It does not provide a single nationwide credit date in the information available here. Employees should follow instructions issued by their railway zone, production unit or accounts office for the actual payroll schedule and any applicable deductions.

What employees should check on their payment details
- Confirm that your post and employment category fall within the eligible non-gazetted coverage.
- Check that you are not in the RPF or RPSF categories excluded by the Railway Board order.
- Read the payroll calculation against the Rs.7,000 monthly wage ceiling where applicable.
- Compare the credited amount with the department’s PLB statement rather than assuming the headline maximum applies to everyone.
- Raise discrepancies through your controlling office or railway accounts channel after the official payment is processed.
What the announcement does—and does not—mean
- It means eligible staff can receive a one-time 78-day PLB payment for 2025-26.
- It does not mean every railway employee will receive Rs.17,951.
- It does not remove the Rs.7,000 monthly wage ceiling used when wages exceed that amount.
- It does not create a permanent addition to basic pay.
- It does not extend coverage to RPF/RPSF personnel under the cited Railway Board order.
