Covered hopper cars carry most dry grain and dry fertilizer. Their roof hatches keep rain out, while bottom outlets let terminals unload the cargo by gravity. Open-top hopper cars handle dense bulk that can tolerate weather, such as coal, stone, sand and ore. Tank cars are built for liquids and gases, including chemicals, petroleum and liquid fertilizer. Boxcars enclose packaged freight, gondolas carry open loads, and flatcars carry oversized or irregular equipment.

The assignment is typical, not absolute. Car design, cargo density, loading and unloading equipment, regulations, linings, fittings and shipper contracts determine the final choice. A car’s paint or logo alone cannot reliably identify its commodity.

The quick guide to railcar choices

Railcar type Best suited to Common examples How cargo is handled
Covered hopper Dry, weather-sensitive solids Grain, fertilizer, flour, salt, sugar, clay, lime, cement, soda ash and plastic pellets Roof hatches for loading; bottom outlets for gravity unloading
Open hopper Dense dry solids that can be exposed Coal, coke, stone, sand, ore, gravel and some scrap Open top; bottom discharge is useful for rapid unloading
Tank car Liquids and gases Chemicals, petroleum and liquid fertilizer Closed tank with commodity-specific valves, fittings and safety equipment
Boxcar Packaged or general freight needing enclosure Paper, appliances, packaged goods and building materials Side doors; cargo is loaded and unloaded as packages or pallets
Gondola Open-top loads, often heavy or bulky Scrap metal, gravel, coal, ore, wood chips and steel coils Top loading; unloading method depends on the car and facility
Flatcar Oversized or irregular freight Steel beams, lumber, machinery, pipes, plywood and drywall Open deck with chains, stakes or other securement
Centerbeam Long, bundled building products Lumber, drywall and related products Central beam and tie-down systems divide and secure the load

Association of American Railroads summarizes the underlying principle: “Not every railcar looks the same because not every product travels the same way.”

Which railcar carries grain?

Grain normally moves in a covered hopper car. Corn, wheat, soybeans and other dry agricultural commodities need protection from rain and contamination during transit. A covered hopper combines a roof with multiple loading hatches and bottom discharge gates, allowing an elevator or processor to fill the car from above and empty it into a receiving pit below.

Why a covered hopper fits grain

  • Weather protection: The roof prevents rain and snow from wetting the grain.
  • Efficient loading: Top hatches align with loading spouts at elevators and terminals.
  • Gravity discharge: Bottom outlets feed pits, conveyors or other unloading systems without turning the car over.
  • Food and agricultural service: Interior construction and cleanliness requirements can be matched to the shipper’s product and facility.

A covered hopper is not automatically a grain car. The same broad car family can be assigned to fertilizer, flour, salt, sugar, minerals, cement or plastic pellets when its volume, outlet arrangement and interior specifications suit that service.

How large is the grain-car fleet?

The scale of the network explains why covered hoppers are a familiar sight in agricultural regions. The Association of American Railroads reported 1.5 million U.S. Class I grain carloads in 2022 and about 273,000 North American grain cars in early 2023. It also describes roughly 1.6 million annual carloads of grain and other farm products in a typical year. Its 2025 agriculture figures say corn accounted for 58% of rail grain carloads and that the North American grain fleet exceeded 290,000 cars by the end of 2025. These are network-level counts, not the capacity of one individual car.

What kind of railcar is used for fertilizer?

The answer depends on whether the fertilizer is dry or liquid:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Dry fertilizer: Usually a covered hopper. Common products include granular fertilizer and potash, provided the car’s outlets, lining and capacity match the product and terminal.
  • Liquid fertilizer: A tank car designed for that liquid, with the required tank specification, valves, fittings and safety controls.

Calling both products “fertilizer” hides an important equipment difference. A dry product flows like a solid bulk commodity and can be discharged through hopper gates. A liquid must remain contained in a pressure- or non-pressure tank and be transferred through liquid-service fittings. Never select a car from the commodity name alone.

Covered-hopper fertilizer service

Covered hoppers protect fertilizer from precipitation and humidity that can cause caking or degrade product quality. Loading plants typically use top hatches; unloading plants connect bottom outlets to pits, conveyors or pneumatic systems. The number and arrangement of bays, outlet gates, interior coatings and permissible loading density vary by car design.

Liquid-fertilizer tank cars

Tank cars for liquid fertilizer are selected against the properties of the specific chemical, not merely the word “fertilizer.” The applicable design controls tank type, material thickness, welding, valves, pressure-relief equipment, inspection, maintenance and repair. A tank car may carry a regulated hazardous commodity, but Association of American Railroads guidance also notes that tank cars carry nonregulated commodities. The car’s marking, fittings and shipping documentation are more reliable indicators than exterior paint.

Covered hopper cars: the dry-bulk workhorse

Covered hoppers are recognizable by a roof, one or more roof hatches and a series of discharge outlets along the bottom. A rounded or “Center Flow” body is a useful visual clue for some grain cars, but appearance is not proof of assignment. For example, an ACF4600 prototype description identifies a three-bay covered hopper used for grain, corn and similar bulk commodities and unloaded by gravity.

Typical covered-hopper commodities

  • Grain, corn, wheat and soybeans
  • Dry fertilizer and potash
  • Flour, salt and sugar
  • Clay, lime, cement and soda ash
  • Plastic pellets and other dry industrial materials

Exact assignments depend on cubic volume, allowable gross weight, product density, outlet geometry, interior lining, contamination controls and the receiving facility. A high-volume, low-density product may need a different car than a dense mineral even when both are dry solids.

Open hopper cars: bulk that can tolerate exposure

An open hopper has no roof. It is chosen when rain is acceptable or when the cargo is destined for processing where minor exposure does not matter. The open top makes loading fast, and bottom doors allow rapid discharge into a pit or conveyor.

Typical open-hopper commodities

  • Coal and coke
  • Stone, sand and gravel
  • Metal ores
  • Some aggregates and scrap materials

Open hoppers are generally associated with heavy, dense bulk. That does not mean every load of coal or stone uses an open hopper: shipper equipment, route, loading plant and unloading system can call for a different car. Conversely, a covered hopper may be used for a dry commodity that needs protection even when it is dense.

Tank cars: liquids and gases, not a single commodity

Tank cars carry liquids and gases in a sealed cylindrical tank. Chemicals and petroleum products are common examples, and liquid fertilizer is another. The tank, shell thickness, valves, pressure-relief devices and other fittings are selected for the material and operating conditions.

Why tank-car identification requires care

Two tank cars can look similar while having different allowable services. A car’s specification, qualification date, fittings, lining and shipping paperwork matter. Regulations also distinguish tank designs and hazardous-material requirements. Do not infer that every tank car contains hazardous material, and do not infer a specific chemical from paint, a color band or a logo.

At the facility, compatibility is decisive: unloading hoses, vapor-return equipment, grounding, spill controls and trained personnel must match the tank car and commodity. A covered hopper’s gravity gates cannot substitute for the controlled liquid transfer system a tank car requires.

Boxcars, gondolas, flatcars and centerbeams

Boxcars

Boxcars are enclosed on all sides and protect packaged freight from weather and handling damage. They commonly carry paper, appliances, packaged goods and building materials. Insulated boxcars add thermal protection for food products, canned goods, beer and wine. Side doors, interior dimensions and loading-floor requirements determine whether pallets, cartons or other packages fit efficiently.

Gondolas

Gondolas are open-top cars with solid sides. They can carry scrap metal, gravel, coal, ores, wood chips or steel coils, depending on the car’s depth, floor strength and fittings. Some gondolas are intended for loose bulk; others have fixtures or covers for coiled steel and similar loads. An uncovered gondola exposes cargo to weather, while a fitted or covered version provides more protection.

Flatcars

Flatcars have an open deck and are used for freight that is too long, wide, tall or irregular for an enclosed car. Examples include steel beams, lumber, machinery, pipes, plywood and drywall. Securement is part of the car choice: chains, stakes, bulkheads, blocking and tie-down points must restrain the load for the route.

Centerbeam cars

A centerbeam is a specialized flatcar with a strong central divider and systems for bundling and securing products on both sides. It is commonly used for lumber, drywall and related building products. Its design improves load restraint and handling for long, uniform bundles; it is not a general substitute for every flatcar.

How railroads and shippers choose the right car

Use these questions in order when matching a commodity to equipment:

  1. Is the cargo a dry solid, liquid or gas? Dry solids point toward hopper, gondola or boxcar service; liquids and gases require a compatible tank car.
  2. Does it need protection from rain, snow or contamination? If yes, consider a covered hopper, boxcar or a covered/fitted gondola rather than an open car.
  3. How will it be loaded and discharged? Confirm top hatches, side doors, bottom gates, pumps, hoses, conveyors, pits and clearance at both ends of the trip.
  4. What are the cargo’s density and volume? The car must stay within gross-weight limits while providing enough cubic capacity. Exact capacities are not stated in the cited general references and vary by model.
  5. Are special materials or fittings required? Corrosive, food-grade, pressurized or otherwise sensitive products may require linings, dedicated fittings, pressure protection or cleaning controls.
  6. Can every facility handle the car? A car that loads correctly at origin can still fail at destination if the unloading pit, hose connection, track geometry or clearance is incompatible.
  7. Do regulations and contracts permit the movement? Federal inspection and safety rules, commodity regulations, car qualification and shipper agreements all apply.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • “All hoppers carry grain.” Open hoppers usually carry exposed heavy bulk; covered hoppers also serve fertilizer, minerals and industrial pellets.
  • “Fertilizer always means a covered hopper.” Dry fertilizer and liquid fertilizer require different equipment.
  • “A tank car always carries hazardous material.” Tank cars also carry nonregulated liquids; verify the specification and shipping documents.
  • “The color identifies the load.” Exterior paint is not a reliable commodity identifier.
  • “Any car with enough room will work.” Outlet geometry, density, loading method, lining, securement and facility compatibility can disqualify an otherwise spacious car.
  • “A model’s appearance proves its real-world assignment.” A rounded body and gravity outlets are useful clues, but prototype markings and service data are needed for confirmation.

Using railcar types in an HO-scale model railroad

If you are modeling agricultural traffic, an HO-scale covered hopper is the most direct representation of grain or dry-fertilizer service. Athearn’s ACF4600 description identifies a three-bay Center Flow prototype used for grain, corn and similar bulk commodities, with gravity unloading. Its Trinity 5161 description covers a covered hopper optimized for agricultural products, sugar and dry chemicals, including potash service. Match the model’s bay count, outlet arrangement and lettering to the railroad or industry you are depicting; do not assume every covered-hopper model represents grain.

Bottom line: match the car to the material and the facility

For the questions most readers ask: choose a covered hopper for grain and dry fertilizer, an open hopper for weather-tolerant coal, stone, sand or ore, and a tank car for liquids, gases or liquid fertilizer. Use boxcars for enclosed packaged freight, gondolas for open heavy or bulky loads, and flatcars or centerbeams for oversized or bundled products. The final decision rests on cargo properties, protection, discharge hardware, density, regulations and the equipment available at both terminals.
