A RAG demo can answer a question convincingly because its builder chose which documents the system could retrieve—and how those documents were prepared, ranked, and presented to the model. One successful answer shows that the system handled that question with that evidence pool. It does not, by itself, show that the system will find and use the right evidence across the questions its intended users will ask.
What a RAG demo has already decided
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) adds retrieved material to a model’s input so it can answer using information from a document collection. Before the model generates an answer, the system has already made choices: which documents are available, how their content is extracted and split, how candidate passages are found and ranked, and how much retrieved context reaches the model.
Those choices shape what the model can see. A demo built around a small, carefully selected collection may perform well on questions that collection answers clearly. That is a legitimate demonstration of a specific setup, but it is not evidence that a different corpus, a broader question set, or a collection-wide task will work equally well.

A typical RAG pipeline transforms source files into retrievable passages. Each stage can affect what evidence is available for an answer.

- Choose the corpus. Select the documents the application is meant to answer from. Gaps or outdated material in that collection can limit the answer before retrieval begins.
- Parse the documents. Extract text and meaningful structure from files. If a parser handles tables, headings, or other layout poorly, the resulting text may be harder to retrieve or interpret.
- Chunk the content. Divide extracted material into passages. Chunks that are too large can mix unrelated information; chunks that are too small can separate a claim from the context needed to understand it.
- Index and retrieve. Encode or otherwise index passages, search for candidates, and rank them for the question. Relevant text can exist in the corpus yet fail to reach the model if retrieval or ranking misses it.
- Generate an answer. The model uses the retrieved passages, along with its other capabilities, to produce a response. It can still misunderstand evidence, rely on distracting context, or answer when the evidence does not support a conclusion.
A September 2026 study by Shubham Kumar Singh examined three parsers, three chunking strategies, five dense embedding models, and a sparse BM25 baseline across four structurally distinct Indian central-government regulatory documents. The evaluation described 800 question instances and a 72,000-row result set. In that particular study, evidence preservation exceeded 98%, and the authors attributed retrieval differences primarily to ranking quality rather than information lost during ingestion. They also found interactions between parser and chunker choices, with no retriever family consistently best across the documents. These results describe that corpus and evaluation—not a universal ranking of tools or configurations. Read the study.
The practical implication is to test combinations on documents and questions resembling the intended application. A parser or chunking approach that works on one document structure may not preserve the useful relationships in another; a strong retrieval score on one set of questions does not establish a single best choice for every collection.

Why more retrieved text can make answers worse
Retrieval is not simply a matter of supplying as much text as possible. A larger context may include irrelevant passages, misleading claims, or false information. The model must distinguish useful evidence from distractions, and it may not do so reliably.

The 2023 RGB benchmark by Jiawei Chen, Hongyu Lin, Xianpei Han, and Le Sun evaluates four abilities: noise robustness, negative rejection, information integration, and counterfactual robustness. In their tested settings, when the noise ratio exceeded 80%, accuracy fell from 96.33% to 76.00% for ChatGPT and from 91.33% to 57.33% for ChatGLM2-6B. These figures belong to that benchmark’s models and experimental setup; they are not current model rankings or a general estimate of RAG accuracy. Read the RGB paper.

- SIMPLE FILE MANAGEMENT — Scanner allows the creation of searchable PDFs with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and convert scans to editable Word or Excel files effortlessly; Designed for home and office document scanning
The four dimensions suggest useful failure cases to include when evaluating a system:
- Noise robustness: Can it find and use relevant evidence when distracting passages are present?
- Negative rejection: Does it say the available material does not support an answer, rather than inventing one?
- Information integration: Can it combine evidence from multiple passages or documents when the answer requires it?
- Counterfactual robustness: Does it resist a false premise instead of treating that premise as established?
Local lookup is not corpus-wide reasoning
A question answered by one passage is different from a question that requires comparing or aggregating information across a collection. For example, finding a date in a specific document is a local retrieval task. Counting all documents that meet a condition, identifying the maximum or minimum, sorting records, or returning the top results requires collection-level reasoning.

The 2025 GlobalQA paper distinguishes local RAG, which retrieves chunks for localized understanding, from global RAG, which aggregates information across an entire collection. It identifies counting, extremum queries, sorting, and top-k extraction as global task types. A system tested only on local fact lookup has not thereby demonstrated collection-wide analysis. Read the GlobalQA paper.
Evaluate retrieval separately from the final answer
A fluent answer can conceal a retrieval failure, while a poor answer can result from either missing evidence or the model’s failure to use evidence it received. Checking only the generated response makes those failure modes difficult to distinguish.

BRIGHT studies reasoning-intensive retrieval questions, where relevant documents may not have obvious lexical or semantic overlap with the query. Its paper reports that stronger retrievers improved downstream generation on the studied tasks, while oracle documents—relevant documents supplied directly—produced larger improvements than retrieved documents. This supports evaluating retrieval and answer generation as related but distinct problems; it does not show that better retrieval eliminates every generation error. Read the BRIGHT paper.
For an evaluation that reflects a real application, build a question set around the work the system is expected to do—not only examples that are easy to answer. Include questions with clear supporting passages, questions requiring evidence from multiple documents, distracting or contradictory material, unsupported questions, and collection-wide tasks if the product claims to handle them. For each case, inspect both what was retrieved and what the model answered. This is practical guidance drawn from the benchmark dimensions and task distinctions above, not a separately validated universal protocol.
Quick Recap
- Does the retrieved material contain the evidence needed for the question?
- Does the answer accurately use that material, including evidence from more than one source when required?
- When the collection does not support an answer, does the system reject the question or clearly state the limitation?
- Does the test include the document structures and question types expected in actual use?
- If the system claims collection-wide analysis, does the evaluation include counting, extremum, sorting, or top-k questions rather than only passage lookup?
