Short answer: choose the Radxa Dragon Q8B only when a project specifically benefits from its up-to-32GB memory, dual 2.5GbE, PCIe-connected storage, multiple display outputs, or edge-compute features—and after you have verified the required operating system, drivers, and software. Choose Raspberry Pi 5 when its documented platform, standard 40-pin header, familiar accessories, and available software already meet your requirements. Consider Radxa ROCK 5B when an RK3588 board and its expansion layout fit the workload. There is no reliable universal winner without comparable tests on your application.

The practical decision is not a specification contest. Before ordering, define the software that must run, the I/O that must be wired, the memory and storage capacity required, the network topology, and the complete cost of power, cooling, enclosure, storage, and adapters.

Quick verdict by project requirement

Project requirement Most logical starting point Why Checks before purchase
Two wired network links, more than 1Gb/s per link, or time-sensitive networking Dragon Q8B Radxa specifies two 2.5GbE ports and AVB/TSN features. Confirm that your operating system, switch, drivers, and application support the required topology and timing features.
Large in-memory datasets, virtual machines, or memory-heavy services Dragon Q8B Configurations are specified with up to 32GB of LPDDR4X, compared with Pi 5 variants through 16GB. Check the exact fixed-memory SKU; memory is not a later upgrade.
Standard maker wiring, common HATs, and a documented general-purpose platform Raspberry Pi 5 It has the Raspberry Pi 40-pin header, official documentation, and a broad established accessory model. Verify that the required HAT, camera, kernel module, and OS image support your chosen Pi 5 memory variant.
Fast PCIe or onboard flash storage Dragon Q8B, if its lanes and software fit Radxa lists UFS 3.1 and M.2 M-key slots with PCIe Gen 3 lanes. Confirm which slot provides which lane width, boot support, adapter requirements, and cooling.
Two 4K displays from a familiar small-computer platform Raspberry Pi 5 Raspberry Pi specifies dual 4Kp60 HDMI outputs and a known display stack. Check the exact cables, refresh-rate combination, application support, and thermal headroom.
Three high-refresh displays or a platform built around RK3588 expansion Dragon Q8B or ROCK 5B Radxa advertises up to triple 4K120 output on Q8B; ROCK 5B documentation describes multiple displays and PCIe. Treat these as vendor capabilities until your exact image, connectors, and workload are validated.

These recommendations are requirement-based, not claims that one processor is faster in every application. Vendor TOPS figures, CPU core counts, and display limits do not predict application performance by themselves.

What each board actually is

Radxa Dragon Q8B

The Dragon Q8B is built around Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, also identified as SC8280XP. Radxa specifies an eight-core Kryo CPU: four Prime cores up to 3.0GHz and four Gold cores up to 2.4GHz. It lists an Adreno 690 GPU, configurations up to 32GB LPDDR4X, and a Qualcomm AI Engine rated by Radxa at up to 29+ TOPS. Those are manufacturer specifications and capability claims, not independent benchmark results. The board details are on Radxa’s Dragon Q8B product page.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Expansion is the Q8B’s defining attraction. The specification lists two 2.5GbE ports, AVB/TSN support, UFS 3.1 module connectivity, microSD, and two M.2 M-key 2280 sockets with PCIe Gen 3 lanes listed as x2 and x4. Video connections include HDMI 2.1 and two USB-C DisplayPort outputs; Radxa states up to triple 4K120 display output. Power can be supplied through USB-C PD or a 12–20V DC input, and standard UEFI boot is specified.

Board revision matters. Radxa says Wi-Fi 7 through the M.2 E-key interface requires motherboard version V1.3 or later. Ask the distributor for the revision and confirm whether a wireless module is included; do not assume every Q8B package has Wi-Fi 7.

Raspberry Pi 5

Raspberry Pi 5 uses the Broadcom BCM2712, a 2.4GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor, with a VideoCore VII GPU. Raspberry Pi lists LPDDR4X-4267 memory variants through 16GB, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microSD storage, two USB 3 ports, two USB 2 ports, dual 4Kp60 HDMI, and the standard 40-pin expansion header. The manufacturer specifications are published at Raspberry Pi’s Raspberry Pi 5 product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pi 5 also exposes a PCIe 2.0 x1 connector. In many builds, a separate HAT or adapter is needed to attach a PCIe device. Raspberry Pi documentation warns that Gen 3 operation is not certified and may be unstable, so a design that depends on Gen 3 should not be treated as a supported Pi 5 baseline. The connector and configuration caveat are documented at Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 hardware documentation.

Radxa ROCK 5B and 5B+

ROCK 5B and 5B+ use the Rockchip RK3588 platform. Radxa’s introduction documentation describes multiple display outputs, PCIe connectivity, and a 40-pin expansion header. That makes the family a legitimate alternative when an RK3588 design, its connector arrangement, or its available accessories suits the project. The documentation does not, by itself, establish a current price, an application benchmark, or equivalent software maturity for your workload. Review the exact model information at Radxa’s ROCK 5B/5B+ product introduction.

Use a requirements-first selection process

Write down the following before comparing prices. A board that fails one mandatory requirement is not rescued by a better score in an unrelated category.

  1. Name the software. Record the operating system, kernel expectations, programming language runtimes, containers, GPU APIs, video codecs, AI framework, camera stack, and any proprietary binary. Radxa lists Linux distributions and Windows support for the Q8B platform; Raspberry Pi provides its own OS guidance and documentation. Neither cited product page proves compatibility with every application.
  2. Mark mandatory interfaces. Count Ethernet ports, USB devices, displays, cameras, serial buses, GPIO lines, storage devices, and audio paths. Distinguish a connector you need on the board from one that can be added through a hub, HAT, or adapter.
  3. Set capacity targets. Estimate peak RAM, storage capacity, storage write endurance, and network throughput. Leave headroom for the operating system, logs, updates, and recovery space instead of sizing only for the first demo.
  4. Define performance with a workload. For example, specify concurrent streams, latency, frame rate, inference model, database transactions, or virtual-machine count. A vendor’s TOPS number is not a substitute for a test using your model, runtime, and precision.
  5. Specify environmental limits. Record ambient temperature, continuous-load duty cycle, enclosure volume, noise limit, and whether the unit can use an active fan. Cooling and power are part of reliability, not optional accessories.
  6. Calculate the complete bill of materials. Include the exact memory tier, power supply, heatsink or fan, case, boot media, M.2 adapter or HAT, cables, and replacement or recovery media. Then add local taxes, shipping, and support costs.

Where the Dragon Q8B has a meaningful advantage

Higher memory ceiling

A Q8B configuration with up to 32GB gives more room for large caches, multiple services, virtual machines, and memory-heavy development tools than a Pi 5 variant capped at 16GB. That advantage matters only if the chosen Q8B SKU is available and the operating system can use the memory reliably. If your workload stays below a few gigabytes, paying for the larger tier does not create a measurable benefit by itself.

Multi-port and faster networking

Two 2.5GbE ports can simplify a router, firewall, storage, bridge, or lab appliance that needs separate links. Radxa also states AVB/TSN features, which may matter for time-sensitive media or industrial traffic. Confirm switch support, kernel drivers, queue configuration, clock synchronization, and the actual traffic pattern; a specification does not guarantee deterministic latency.

PCIe and flash options

UFS 3.1 and M.2 M-key sockets offer more storage design choices than a microSD-only starting point. Before selecting an SSD, identify the socket’s lane width, whether the device can boot from it, how the lane is shared with other functions, and whether the enclosure leaves room for a 2280 module and heatsink. Budget for an adapter only when the board or drive requires one.

Display density and edge acceleration

Radxa’s up-to-triple-4K120 statement and the Adreno 690 can be attractive for a display wall, visualization appliance, or edge-compute prototype. Treat both as capabilities to validate: confirm the exact simultaneous output combination, connector adapters, display timing, GPU APIs, and AI runtime support for your model. The 29+ TOPS figure is Radxa’s vendor claim, not an independent workload result.

Where Raspberry Pi 5 is the safer baseline

Known 40-pin projects

If a project already uses a Raspberry Pi 40-pin wiring diagram, HAT, case, camera cable, or device tree overlay, Pi 5 reduces uncertainty. A Q8B or ROCK 5B header may have a similar shape or pin count but is not automatically electrically or software compatible. Check voltage levels, alternate functions, pull-ups, interrupt behavior, and the vendor’s overlay documentation before moving a design.

Documented display and camera paths

Pi 5 specifies dual 4Kp60 HDMI and two four-lane camera/display transceivers. That gives a clear starting point for a two-screen kiosk or a camera application, but the sensor driver and application still need testing. Do not infer that every HDMI mode, camera sensor, or cable combination works merely because the connector is present.

PCIe with conservative expectations

Pi 5’s PCIe 2.0 x1 connector can attach fast peripherals, usually through a separate adapter or HAT. Raspberry Pi explicitly says Gen 3 is not certified and may be unstable. Design around Gen 2 unless you are prepared to test a specific device, firmware, power arrangement, and workload and accept that an unsupported Gen 3 setting can fail.

Variant and price discipline

The Raspberry Pi product page displayed $305 for the 16GB Pi 5 when checked on October 13, 2026. That is a dated manufacturer-page observation, not a universal or permanent regional quote. Verify the current price, taxes, reseller terms, and stock, and compare the same memory class and accessories against the Q8B and ROCK 5B rather than comparing bare-board figures.

When ROCK 5B belongs on the shortlist

ROCK 5B is worth evaluating when the application is already comfortable with the RK3588 platform, needs the documented multiple-display and PCIe arrangement, or can use its 40-pin expansion header without assuming Pi HAT compatibility. It is not automatically a faster or better-supported substitute for either board. The cited Radxa documentation establishes the platform and interfaces, but not a current regional price, application benchmark, or support quality for a particular operating-system image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fair comparison, obtain the exact ROCK 5B or 5B+ SKU, memory configuration, storage method, display connectors, power input, and supported image. Then run the same application test used for the Q8B and Pi 5. A board that wins a synthetic benchmark but lacks your camera driver, container image, or kernel feature is not a practical winner.

Choose by common project type

Home server, NAS, or network appliance

Start with the network and storage topology. The Q8B is the paper fit for two 2.5GbE links, UFS, and M.2 storage, provided your image supports the controllers and the enclosure can cool sustained transfers. Pi 5 is reasonable for a lighter single-Gigabit service with microSD or an attached PCIe device, but include the adapter and stay within certified PCIe behavior. For any board, test link negotiation, simultaneous read/write load, recovery after power loss, and database or filesystem behavior before deployment.

Edge AI or computer vision

The Q8B’s Adreno 690 and vendor-stated AI Engine are relevant only if the required model format, quantization, runtime, and driver are available for your operating system. Confirm acceleration with the actual model and camera pipeline. Pi 5 may be preferable when the application has a mature Pi-oriented software stack and CPU performance is sufficient. ROCK 5B deserves a test when its RK3588 acceleration path is supported by the chosen framework. Do not select from TOPS alone.

Digital signage and multi-display visualization

Use the required number of screens, resolution, refresh rate, connector type, and playback codec as acceptance criteria. Q8B’s stated triple 4K120 capability is potentially valuable, while Pi 5 specifies dual 4Kp60. Validate simultaneous output modes, USB-C DisplayPort adapters, audio routing, hot-plug behavior, and thermal performance in the final enclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Industrial or time-sensitive networking

Q8B is the candidate with explicitly stated AVB/TSN features and two 2.5GbE ports. That does not establish certification for your protocol or deterministic behavior in your software. Test synchronization, failover, packet latency, cable and switch compatibility, and kernel configuration. If those features are not required, Pi 5’s simpler single-Gigabit design may reduce integration work.

GPIO, robotics, and classroom projects

Pi 5 is usually the lower-risk starting point when tutorials, HATs, and 40-pin wiring are central. With Q8B or ROCK 5B, obtain the pinout and electrical specifications for the exact revision, then verify device-tree overlays and library support. A physical adapter may solve a connector mismatch but cannot fix incompatible voltage or missing drivers.

Developer workstation or virtualized lab

Prioritize memory capacity, storage I/O, graphics APIs, container images, and heat removal. A 32GB Q8B can be attractive for memory-heavy concurrent services; Pi 5 may be adequate for lighter development and has a straightforward documented platform. Measure compile time, container startup, database latency, and sustained thermals on the exact images rather than extrapolating from core counts.

Pre-purchase verification checklist

  1. Confirm the exact board and revision. For Q8B, request the motherboard revision and verify V1.3 or later if Wi-Fi 7 through the E-key slot is required. For Pi 5 and ROCK 5B, record the memory size and board variant.
  2. Confirm the software image. Locate the supported Linux or Windows image, kernel version, GPU and video drivers, AI runtime, camera support, and container architecture for every required component. A product page listing an operating system is not proof that your application is supported.
  3. Map every connector. Match displays to HDMI or USB-C DisplayPort, cameras to the correct transceiver and cable, storage to the correct PCIe lane, and peripherals to the available USB bandwidth. Check whether an adapter or HAT is required.
  4. Choose power and cooling together. Select the Q8B’s USB-C PD or 12–20V DC supply within the board’s documented input range, or the appropriate Pi/ROCK supply. Add the heatsink, fan, and case needed for continuous load; then verify that the case does not block M.2 modules or display cables.
  5. Price the complete build. Use the same memory tier, storage capacity, power supply, cooler, enclosure, cables, adapter, and shipping assumptions for each candidate. Treat the $305 Pi 5 16GB figure as time- and region-sensitive, and obtain local Q8B and ROCK 5B quotes from approved or authorized distributors.
  6. Run a proof-of-concept before committing. Boot the intended image, attach every critical device, run the production workload for a representative duration, measure temperatures and latency, and test restart, power interruption, and storage recovery.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Assuming a headline specification is a benchmark. Radxa’s 29+ TOPS and display figures describe platform capability. They do not predict your model’s inference rate, codec support, or frame stability. Use a workload test.
  • Assuming all 40-pin headers are interchangeable. Confirm voltage, pin multiplexing, pull-ups, overlays, and physical clearance before attaching a HAT or motor controller.
  • Buying a Q8B without checking revision or wireless hardware. Wi-Fi 7 via the E-key interface requires motherboard V1.3 or later according to Radxa, and the module may not be included in the package.
  • Planning a Pi 5 design around uncertified PCIe Gen 3. Raspberry Pi documents Gen 3 as uncertified and potentially unstable. Use Gen 2 as the supported planning assumption unless controlled testing justifies another choice.
  • Comparing bare-board prices. Storage, cooling, power, adapters, and enclosure costs can reverse the apparent value. Build a complete bill of materials.
  • Ignoring sustained thermals. A board can complete a short demonstration and then throttle or reset under continuous networking, storage, video, or AI load. Test inside the intended enclosure.
  • Assuming regional availability. Radxa states distribution through approved partners, but stock and pricing vary by geography. Confirm the seller, warranty route, revision, and delivery date before designing around a board.

A practical decision rule

Choose the Dragon Q8B when you can name a requirement that its dual 2.5GbE, higher memory ceiling, PCIe/storage layout, display capacity, or edge-compute hardware satisfies—and you have verified the software path. Choose Raspberry Pi 5 when the standard 40-pin ecosystem and documented platform remove more integration risk than the Q8B’s extra hardware adds. Put ROCK 5B on the shortlist when RK3588 and its expansion configuration match the application and you can validate the exact image and accessories. If no board passes the software, I/O, thermal, and complete-cost checks, revise the project requirements before buying rather than choosing from a specification table alone.
