Most Raspberry Pi accessories are not automatically compatible with the Radxa Dragon Q8B. The Q8B uses a 100 mm × 75 mm board, a different power specification, and its own mechanical layout. A Raspberry Pi accessory can work only when its connector, pin mapping, voltage, drivers, and operating-system support all match the Q8B.
For a case, Radxa identifies the MagCase 1082 for Dragon Q8B as the documented fit. For power, Radxa specifies 20 V USB Power Delivery (PD) or fixed 20 V Type-C input, recommends at least 3 A (60 W), and requires a Type-C-to-Type-C cable. Treat the 40-pin header as an interface to verify, not as proof that Raspberry Pi HATs will plug in and work.
What “compatible” means on the Dragon Q8B
Accessory compatibility has three separate tests:
- Mechanical fit: The accessory must line up with the Q8B’s outline, mounting holes, connector positions, board height, and cooling clearances.
- Electrical fit: Signals must use the same pin numbers, voltage levels, power limits, and bus functions. A connector that looks right can still damage the board if its wiring is wrong.
- Software support: The Q8B’s operating system must have the drivers, device-tree configuration, and libraries needed by the accessory.
Passing one test does not imply the others. A HAT may physically mate with a 40-pin header but use a different interrupt pin. A display may accept HDMI but depend on a software feature unavailable in the selected Q8B image. Evaluate each accessory against all three tests.

Why Raspberry Pi case names are not useful evidence
Radxa lists the Dragon Q8B at 100 mm × 75 mm in its product specification (manufacturer figure, accessed 2026). Raspberry Pi boards and cases use different outlines, hole patterns, port locations, and heights. Similar board-family styling or a familiar case size cannot establish a fit.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Case compatibility depends on more than the length and width. Check the exact location and diameter of every mounting hole, the height of components on both sides of the board, openings for HDMI, USB, network and storage connectors, ventilation, and access to the 40-pin header. A case can have the right footprint yet block a cable or press against a heatsink.
The documented Q8B case
Radxa names the MagCase 1082 for Dragon Q8B as a modular magnetic case. That listing is the manufacturer’s documented fit and is the lowest-risk choice when you want a ready-made enclosure. Radxa also lists the Heatsink 5845B for the Q8B.
How to evaluate a third-party enclosure
- Download Radxa’s Q8B 2D dimensions drawing and compare the outside outline and every mounting-hole coordinate.
- Use the supplied DXF or STEP model when the enclosure maker supports CAD files; it is more reliable than measuring a product photograph.
- Overlay the case’s port cutouts with the Q8B connector positions, including the angle and insertion depth needed by cables.
- Check vertical clearance over processors, memory, wireless components, and any heatsink. Allow space for airflow rather than relying on a tight press fit.
- Confirm that the case leaves the microSD slot and 40-pin header accessible if you will change storage or attach peripherals.
If a seller does not publish hole locations, internal height, and port-opening dimensions, classify the case as unverified rather than “probably compatible.”

What the 40-pin header does—and does not—tell you
Radxa documents a 40-pin GPIO interface on the Q8B with multiplexed GPIO, UART, SPI, and I2C functions. That establishes the available signal families and the connector class; it does not promise compatibility with every Raspberry Pi HAT.

Checks before attaching a HAT or breakout
- Complete pinout: Compare every signal, ground, and power pin, not just the pins used by the accessory’s headline feature.
- Voltage: Verify the Q8B signal level and the HAT’s required logic and supply voltage. Never assume that a Raspberry Pi voltage convention applies unchanged.
- Bus assignment: Confirm the accessory’s SPI chip-select, I2C address, UART pins, PWM channel, or GPIO interrupt pin. Multiplexed pins may need to be switched to the required function.
- Current and power: Check the accessory’s draw and whether it expects power from the header or an external supply.
- Drivers and OS: Confirm that the Q8B image supports the required kernel driver, overlay, library, and user-space permissions.
Radxa’s GPIO documentation warns: “Improper operation may result in damage to the device hardware.” Start with the official pinout and a continuity check, and power down before changing wiring.
When adaptation is realistic
A simple sensor, button, LED, relay driver, or breakout can often be adapted when it uses a documented bus and has software support for the Q8B. A complex HAT that assumes Raspberry Pi-specific identification EEPROM behavior, proprietary overlays, or a fixed interrupt arrangement is higher risk. If the manufacturer provides no Q8B wiring or driver information, compatibility remains unestablished even when the pins physically align.
Displays: connectors are only the first check
The Q8B specification lists one HDMI 2.1 Type-A output and two USB-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode. Radxa lists display output up to 4K at 120 Hz (manufacturer specification, accessed 2026). Its quick-start instructions describe connecting a monitor through HDMI or a dual-ended USB-C connection.
HDMI accessories
A standard monitor or television that accepts the required HDMI signal is the straightforward case. A Raspberry Pi display product can still differ in EDID behavior, power needs, cable orientation, or software expectations. Verify that it has a normal HDMI input and does not depend on a board-specific ribbon connector or driver.

USB-C DisplayPort accessories
Use a USB-C cable designed for DisplayPort Alt Mode and check which Q8B USB-C port provides video. USB-C connectors do not all carry the same functions; a cable intended only for charging or USB data will not produce a display signal.
DSI panels and camera modules
The presence of HDMI and DisplayPort does not establish compatibility with Raspberry Pi DSI display modules or camera products. Those devices require a particular ribbon connector, lane arrangement, power rail, timing configuration, and driver. Confirm each item in the Q8B hardware documentation and the operating-system support list before buying an adapter or panel.
Power: do not reuse a Raspberry Pi supply by connector shape
Power is the clearest area where a familiar accessory can be unsuitable. Radxa’s Q8B quick-start specifies either 20 V USB PD or a fixed 20 V Type-C supply, recommends at least 3 A (60 W), and identifies its PD 65 W adapter as recommended. It also requires a Type-C-to-Type-C cable and explicitly says not to use Type-C-to-Type-A.

| Supply characteristic | Q8B requirement or guidance | Compatibility decision |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 20 V USB PD or fixed 20 V Type-C | Accept only when the adapter provides the specified 20 V profile. |
| Current capacity | At least 3 A (60 W) recommended | Lower-rated supplies do not meet Radxa’s guidance. |
| Cable | Type-C plug at both ends | Use Type-C-to-Type-C; Type-C-to-Type-A is expressly excluded. |
| Official option | Radxa PD 65 W adapter | Radxa identifies this as recommended; it is not an independent performance test. |
Do not select a supply solely because its plug fits. A typical single-board-computer adapter designed around a lower voltage may fail to negotiate power, cause boot instability, or fall outside the Q8B’s specified input range. Check the label for 20 V output, the PD profiles if applicable, and a current rating of at least 3 A.

Storage and boot accessories
The Q8B includes a microSD slot, and Radxa’s quick-start uses a microSD card to install and boot its system image. A microSD card that is physically the right size still needs an image supported by the Q8B and adequate speed and capacity for that image. Follow Radxa’s imaging and first-boot procedure for the operating system you intend to run.
USB card readers, external drives, and hubs are ordinary USB accessories only when their power draw and driver requirements are supported by the selected operating system. A hub that depends on more bus power than the Q8B can provide may need its own supply.

A repeatable compatibility procedure
- Identify the exact accessory revision. Connector and pin arrangements can change between revisions marketed under the same family name.
- Check the Q8B mechanical files. Use Radxa’s dimensions drawing, DXF or STEP model for cases, brackets and heatsinks.
- Map connectors and pins. Record every connection, including grounds, supplies, chip-selects and interrupts.
- Match electrical limits. Confirm logic voltage, 20 V input requirements where relevant, current draw, and any external power path.
- Confirm software support. Look for a Q8B-compatible kernel driver, device-tree configuration, library and documented setup for your OS image.
- Test with the minimum setup. Boot with only the required display, storage and power, then add one accessory at a time.
- Document the working configuration. Note the pin mapping, OS version, overlays and cable types so a later change can be diagnosed.
Common failure symptoms and fixes
The board does not boot
Recheck the 20 V requirement, a minimum 3 A capability, PD negotiation, and the Type-C-to-Type-C cable. Remove attached HATs and hubs, then boot from a known-good microSD image. A supply that powers another board may still be unsuitable for the Q8B.
The case closes but ports or cards are inaccessible
Compare the enclosure against the official 2D, DXF or STEP dimensions. Look for a shifted hole pattern, insufficient connector depth, or a heatsink contacting the lid. Do not force the board into place; pressure on a connector or component can cause permanent damage.

A HAT is detected incorrectly or not at all
Power down and verify each pin against the Q8B mapping. Check logic voltage, bus selection, chip-select and interrupt pins, then install the Q8B-specific driver or overlay if one exists. If the HAT depends on Raspberry Pi-only software, physical alignment will not solve the problem.
The display remains blank
For HDMI, confirm the monitor input and cable. For USB-C video, use the port and cable that support DisplayPort Alt Mode. A DSI panel or camera needs a separate connector and driver path; an adapter cannot create support that the board and OS do not provide.
Bottom line for Raspberry Pi accessory buyers
Choose accessories by Q8B evidence, not by a Raspberry Pi label or a matching connector. The Radxa MagCase 1082 and Heatsink 5845B are documented Q8B fits. The 40-pin header makes some GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C projects adaptable, but every HAT still requires pin, voltage, driver and OS checks. Displays must match the Q8B’s HDMI or DisplayPort capabilities, while DSI and camera products need their own connector and software verification. Power the board only with the specified 20 V arrangement, at least 3 A guidance, and a Type-C-to-Type-C cable.
