Nappa is stronger than Raditz in the original Dragon Ball Z Saiyan arc. The clearest evidence is the story itself: Piccolo had already overcome Raditz, yet reacts with shock when Nappa reveals his power. Nappa then overwhelms Earth’s defenders until Goku arrives. Commonly listed guidebook-associated figures point the same way—1,500 for Raditz and 4,000 for Nappa—but those numbers come through a secondary fan compilation rather than a directly verified guidebook page.
The direct verdict
There is no canon chapter showing Raditz and Nappa fighting each other. The comparison therefore has to use the evidence the Saiyan arc actually provides: how each character performs against the defenders, how the story frames his threat, and the power-level figures commonly associated with guidebook material.
On all three measures, Nappa comes out ahead. Raditz is the first Saiyan adversary to reach Earth and is dangerous enough to expose Goku’s heritage and force an unprecedented alliance against him. Nappa arrives later, after Earth’s defenders have had a year to prepare, and the official story presents him as a substantially more overwhelming opponent. Piccolo’s reaction is the key narrative comparison: after having defeated Raditz, he is shocked by Nappa’s “indomitable power” and says, “I never thought…it would be so much…!”
That does not establish an exact multiplier. It does establish the intended hierarchy: Nappa is the stronger Saiyan in this part of the story.

What “stronger” means in this comparison
“Stronger” can mean several different things in a Dragon Ball debate. It might refer to a stated battle-power number, the ability to defeat an opponent, the amount of pressure a character places on a group of fighters, or the way the story presents that character as a threat. Those measures are related, but they are not identical.
For Raditz and Nappa, the available evidence points in the same direction on each measure. The commonly listed figures place Nappa above Raditz. The official chronology gives Nappa the more dominant performance against Earth’s defenders. Piccolo’s response supplies an in-story comparison from a fighter who had already faced Raditz. That convergence is why the verdict is firm even though the manga does not stage a direct duel.
The comparison is limited to the original Saiyan arc. Later games, promotional material, alternate continuities, fan calculations, or redesigned statistics can use different rules. They cannot overturn what the original arc establishes unless the question is changed.

Piccolo’s experience provides the closest direct comparison
The official Dragon Ball chronology places Raditz and Nappa in the same escalating Saiyan storyline. Raditz is defeated before Nappa reaches Earth. When Nappa later confronts the defenders, Piccolo—who had already overcome Raditz—recognizes that the new opponent is on another level of danger. The official recap describes Piccolo as shocked by Nappa’s power, then recounts Nappa defeating Earth’s fighters before Goku’s arrival.
This is stronger evidence than a fan-made numerical chart because it comes from the narrative’s own sequence of events. The story gives the reader a known reference point: Piccolo’s earlier victory over Raditz. It then uses Piccolo’s reaction and Nappa’s subsequent performance to show that Nappa represents a greater threat.
You can read the relevant chronology in the official site’s “The Story of Dragon Ball in 42 Panels – Part Two”. The site labels the relevant installments “Volume 18: The Saiyan Invasion” and “Volume 19: Earth vs. the Saiyans.”
Nappa’s defeat of the defenders is the larger feat
Nappa does not merely arrive with a higher reputation. His entrance is followed by an attack involving Saibamen and then a sustained battle against the defenders who have spent the preceding year preparing for the Saiyans. The official recap presents Nappa as defeating those defenders until Goku arrives.
That context matters. The defenders are not meeting Nappa with no warning or preparation. They have survived the earlier crisis, trained for the expected invasion, and assembled to resist it. Nappa still becomes the dominant combatant. The sequence makes him the arc’s more formidable physical threat when compared with Raditz’s earlier battle.
It also avoids a common mistake in versus discussions: treating the number of opponents as the only measure of difficulty. The important point is not simply that Nappa faces several defenders. It is that the official account describes him as controlling the engagement despite the group’s preparation, and that Piccolo immediately recognizes the scale of the danger.
Raditz’s role is important but not equivalent
Raditz changes the direction of the series. He arrives on Earth, reveals that Goku is a Saiyan, and sends information about the Dragon Balls to Vegeta and Nappa before dying. Those actions make him essential to the plot, but narrative importance is not the same as superior fighting strength.

The official character feature “Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #21: Raditz!” covers Raditz’s arrival, the identity revelation, and the transmission that brings the larger Saiyan threat into motion. His strategic role explains why fans remember him even though his combat showing is shorter and less overwhelming than Nappa’s.
Raditz is therefore best understood as the inciting threat. He supplies the information that expands the conflict from Goku’s personal life to a Saiyan invasion. Nappa is the invasion’s immediate enforcer. Confusing those functions can make Raditz seem stronger simply because his introduction has greater historical importance to the series.
Power-level figures: 1,500 versus 4,000
A commonly cited secondary compilation lists Raditz at 1,500 and Nappa at 4,000. Those values are attributed by the compilation to Daizenshuu or related guidebook material. The figures are useful as a snapshot of the commonly circulated hierarchy, but they should not be presented as directly verified quotations from a primary guidebook because the original guidebook page was not independently checked.
| Character | Commonly listed figure | How the figure is reported | What it supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raditz | 1,500 | Listed by DBZ Warriors as a guidebook-associated value; publication year not stated | Places Raditz below Nappa in the commonly circulated numerical hierarchy |
| Nappa | 4,000 | Listed by DBZ Warriors as a guidebook-associated value; publication year not stated | Places Nappa above Raditz by the same secondary compilation |
The compilation is DBZ Warriors’ “Dragonball Power Levels”. It is a secondary fan-maintained source, not the publisher of the original guidebook material. Because the source does not state a publication year in the available listing and the primary page was not inspected, the safest wording is “commonly listed guidebook-associated figures,” not “the official site states” or “the guidebook page confirms.”
Numerically, 4,000 is about 2.67 times 1,500. That arithmetic describes the two listed values; it should not be turned into a claim that the official story gives Nappa an exact 2.67-to-1 advantage. The official recap establishes a qualitative gap, while the secondary figures suggest a quantitative one.

The distinction between a listed value and a primary quotation matters because Dragon Ball power-level lists are frequently copied from one fan page to another. Repetition does not independently authenticate the original attribution. The numbers are still useful for explaining why many readers rank Nappa above Raditz, but the narrative evidence remains the safer foundation for the conclusion.
Raditz and Nappa in their original Saiyan-arc context
Raditz: the first Saiyan threat on Earth
- He arrives on Earth before the other Saiyans.
- He reveals Goku’s Saiyan identity, changing how the heroes understand Goku and his past.
- He communicates information about the Dragon Balls to Vegeta and Nappa before his death.
- His defeat gives Piccolo a demonstrated reference point for comparing the later invaders.
Raditz’s introduction has an unusual effect on the story. He is both an antagonist and the messenger who expands the conflict beyond Earth. His value to the plot is therefore larger than the amount of time he spends fighting. That distinction is important when fans use “stronger” loosely: a character can be more influential, more mysterious, or more memorable without being the better combatant.
His arrival also changes the defenders’ preparation. Once the information reaches Vegeta and Nappa, Earth is no longer responding to an isolated encounter. The later invasion is expected, which gives the defenders time to organize and train. Raditz begins the chain of events, but Nappa is the character who tests whether that preparation can actually stop the Saiyans.
Nappa: the larger-scale invasion threat
- He arrives after Earth’s defenders have had a year to prepare.
- Saibamen are part of the opening attack associated with his arrival.
- He fights the assembled defenders and is portrayed as defeating them until Goku appears.
- Piccolo’s reaction identifies his power as far beyond what the defenders expected after Raditz.
Nappa’s role is therefore a test of whether the preparation that followed Raditz’s arrival is enough. The official account says it is not. His battle is longer in consequence and broader in effect: rather than confronting a small group in the first surprise encounter, he faces the prepared defenders of Earth and still controls the engagement.

The official site’s feature on Gohan, “Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #20: The Saiyan Arc’s Son Gohan!”, also places Gohan’s latent power and later defeat by Nappa within this same invasion context. It is useful for understanding how Nappa’s battle fits into the defenders’ story, although it does not replace the direct Raditz-versus-Nappa comparison.

Timeline: why the order of events matters
- Raditz reaches Earth first and reveals Goku’s Saiyan origin.
- Raditz communicates information about the Dragon Balls to Vegeta and Nappa before his death.
- Earth’s defenders spend the following year preparing for the expected Saiyan arrival.
- Nappa arrives with the invasion force, and Saibamen are part of the opening attack.
- Nappa overwhelms the assembled defenders until Goku arrives.
This sequence gives the comparison a built-in progression. Raditz is the warning that makes the later conflict possible. Nappa is the escalation that follows that warning. Since Nappa faces opponents who know an invasion is coming, his dominance cannot be dismissed as the product of total surprise. The story uses the timeline to make the second threat feel larger, not merely later.
The chronology also explains why Raditz’s defeat does not automatically make the entire Saiyan force look weak. Raditz and Nappa occupy different stages of the same escalation. The first encounter establishes the danger; the second demonstrates that the danger has increased.
Comparison by evidence type
| Comparison axis | Raditz | Nappa | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commonly listed power-level figure | 1,500 | 4,000 | Nappa; figures are secondary-source guidebook-associated values |
| Position in the invasion timeline | Arrives first and initiates the larger Saiyan conflict | Arrives later after a year of defender preparation | Timing alone does not decide strength, but Nappa faces the better-prepared opposition |
| Official narrative framing | Defeated before the later invasion confrontation | Described as an indomitable power that shocks Piccolo | Nappa |
| Demonstrated effect on Earth’s defenders | His battle establishes the danger and forces extraordinary measures | Defeats the defenders until Goku arrives | Nappa’s showing is more overwhelming |
| Direct on-page fight against the other character | None | None | No canon head-to-head result exists |
The table separates evidence instead of treating every claim as equally certain. The story’s ordering and Piccolo’s reaction are official narrative evidence. The 1,500 and 4,000 entries are useful supporting figures, but their primary guidebook attribution has not been independently verified here. The conclusion does not depend on accepting the numbers.

In the original Saiyan arc, Raditz would not be the favored winner. The available evidence points in the opposite direction: Nappa is portrayed as stronger, is associated with the higher commonly listed figure, and overcomes defenders who have prepared for the invasion.
That answer is a comparison of the characters as presented in the original story. It is not a claim about every video game, promotional appearance, alternate continuity, fan calculation, or later reinterpretation. Changing the version can change what abilities, equipment, transformations, or statistics are available, so a cross-continuity matchup needs its own rules before a meaningful verdict can be given.
Why a surprise attack does not overturn the canon comparison
A hypothetical fight can introduce variables that the story never tests: who attacks first, whether either fighter has advance knowledge, where the fight occurs, and whether the characters are restricted to the forms and information they possess in the Saiyan arc. Those variables might make a fictional scenario more interesting, but they do not provide evidence that Raditz is actually stronger.
To argue for Raditz, a fan would need to show either a source that gives him a higher canonical battle value or a feat that outweighs Nappa’s official portrayal. The material associated with this comparison supplies neither. It supplies a lower commonly listed figure for Raditz and a direct narrative contrast favoring Nappa.

What the story does not prove
- It does not provide an on-page Raditz-versus-Nappa match.
- It does not state an official exact multiplier between their strengths in the recap.
- It does not make the secondary compilation’s numbers equivalent to a verified quotation from a guidebook.
- It does not show that Raditz would lose every imaginable contest involving tactics, information, or non-combat objectives.
The narrow claim is stronger and more defensible: for fighting strength in the original Saiyan arc, Nappa is above Raditz.
How to check the source story yourself
Readers who want to verify the comparison should start with the official chronology rather than with isolated fan charts. Look for the sequence in which Raditz’s encounter is resolved, then follow the recap into the Saiyan invasion chapters.
- Read the official chronology in “The Story of Dragon Ball in 42 Panels – Part Two”.
- Identify the Raditz section and note that Piccolo has already overcome him before Nappa’s confrontation.
- Continue to the sections labeled “Volume 18: The Saiyan Invasion” and “Volume 19: Earth vs. the Saiyans.”
- Observe the recap’s description of Nappa, the Saibamen opening attack, and the defeats suffered by Earth’s defenders before Goku arrives.
- Use the Raditz character feature at “Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #21: Raditz!” to verify his arrival, identity revelation, and transmission to Vegeta and Nappa.
- Consult the Gohan character feature at “Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #20: The Saiyan Arc’s Son Gohan!” for the surrounding invasion context.
- If you use the 1,500 and 4,000 figures, label them as values listed by the secondary compilation at DBZ Warriors, and retain the caveat that the original guidebook page and publication details were not independently confirmed.
Checking the official chronology first also prevents a common category error: treating a fan list as if it were the scene that establishes the characters’ relationship. The list can support the conclusion, but the sequence of Raditz’s defeat, Piccolo’s reaction, and Nappa’s attack explains it.

Why fans sometimes disagree
Disagreement usually comes from mixing different standards of proof. One person may focus on Raditz’s importance as the first Saiyan and the fact that defeating him requires a dramatic team effort. Another may focus on Nappa’s later battle and Piccolo’s explicit shock. A third may use a fan power-level list without checking whether its numbers are primary-source quotations.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Those approaches answer different questions. “Who introduced the Saiyan threat?” favors Raditz. “Who has the more intimidating entrance?” depends on the scene a reader remembers. “Who is stronger in the Saiyan arc?” is answered by the combined evidence: Nappa.
It is also easy to confuse preparation with raw strength. The defenders’ year of training is part of the context for Nappa’s battle, but the official account still presents Nappa as dominant against that prepared group. Conversely, Raditz’s earlier victory conditions should not be treated as a clean measurement of his strength alone because the comparison does not provide a standardized, repeated test against identical opponents.
Some disagreements also arise when readers silently switch versions. A game may assign different statistics, a promotional appearance may emphasize a different ability, and a fan calculation may combine material from separate continuities. Those can be valid subjects for separate debates, but they should not be blended into a verdict about the original Saiyan arc.
Frequently asked questions
Who is stronger, Raditz or Nappa?
Nappa is stronger in the original Saiyan arc. Piccolo, who had already overcome Raditz, is shocked by Nappa’s power, and Nappa defeats Earth’s defenders until Goku arrives. The commonly listed figures of 1,500 for Raditz and 4,000 for Nappa point to the same ordering.
What are Raditz’s and Nappa’s power levels?
A secondary compilation commonly lists Raditz at 1,500 and Nappa at 4,000. These are guidebook-associated values reported by DBZ Warriors, with no publication year shown in the listing. Because the original guidebook page was not independently checked, they should be described as commonly listed figures rather than verified primary quotations.
Could Raditz beat Nappa?
Raditz is not the favored winner under the original Saiyan-arc portrayal. Nappa has the higher commonly listed value and the more overwhelming official showing. A hypothetical surprise attack or tactical scenario could change the conditions, but it would not change the story’s ranking of their fighting strength.
Did Raditz and Nappa ever fight directly?
No canon head-to-head fight between them is shown. The comparison is indirect: Raditz is defeated earlier, while Nappa later shocks Piccolo and defeats the defenders. That is why an exact margin cannot be established from a direct contest.
Is Nappa exactly 2.67 times stronger?
That ratio comes only from dividing the commonly listed figures, 4,000 by 1,500. It is not an exact multiplier stated by the official story. The numbers suggest a substantial gap, while the official recap supports the qualitative conclusion that Nappa is stronger.
Why is Raditz still important if he is weaker?
Raditz is the first Saiyan to arrive on Earth, reveals Goku’s identity, and transmits information about the Dragon Balls to Vegeta and Nappa. Those plot functions launch the larger invasion. Importance to the story and combat superiority are separate judgments.

Which official material should readers consult?
The Dragon Ball Official Site’s “The Story of Dragon Ball in 42 Panels – Part Two” covers the relevant chronology and labels “Volume 18: The Saiyan Invasion” and “Volume 19: Earth vs. the Saiyans.” Its Raditz and Gohan character features add context for Raditz’s arrival and the invasion battle.
Bottom line on Raditz vs. Nappa
Nappa is stronger than Raditz in Dragon Ball Z’s original Saiyan arc. The official narrative is decisive enough without numerical help: Piccolo had overcome Raditz, then reacts with disbelief at Nappa’s power, while Nappa defeats Earth’s defenders until Goku arrives. The commonly circulated guidebook-associated figures—1,500 for Raditz and 4,000 for Nappa—support the same ordering, but they should be cited as secondary-source listings rather than as independently verified primary-guidebook quotations. There is no canon direct fight between the two, so claims about an exact margin or every hypothetical matchup go beyond what the story establishes.
