Archaeologists rarely date an ancient grave with one test. They establish the burial’s relative position through stratigraphy, then use calibrated radiocarbon measurements on carefully selected carbon-bearing material. The laboratory dates the sample itself; excavation records and archaeological association determine whether that sample represents the burial event. A defensible result is therefore a probability range supported by both chemistry and context, not a single year printed on a label.

The core distinction: a sample date versus a grave sequence

Radiocarbon dating and stratigraphy answer different questions. Radiocarbon asks how old a particular piece of carbon-bearing material is on a calibrated calendar scale. Stratigraphy asks which archaeological contexts came before or after which. Dating an ancient grave means reconciling those answers without assuming that every object found in a grave was deposited when the grave was dug.

What radiocarbon dating measures

A laboratory measures carbon-14 in material such as human bone, charcoal or carbonised plant remains. The initial laboratory result is a conventional radiocarbon age with an uncertainty term, not a ready-made calendar date. Atmospheric carbon-14 changed over time, so the conventional result must be calibrated against independently dated material. Calibration converts the measurement into one or more calendar probability ranges and can make the interval wider or split it into several plausible ranges.

The Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit explains the reason for calibration this way: “Both of these complications are dealt with by calibration of the radiocarbon dates against material of known age.” The curve, calculation method, probability level and any corrections must accompany the reported range.

What stratigraphy records

Stratigraphy is the documented relationship between archaeological contexts. A grave cut may truncate an earlier layer; its fill may seal an older ground surface; a later grave may cut through the first burial. Those observations establish an earlier-to-later sequence even when no calendar year is known. Stratigraphic observations can include the grave cut, lining, fill, skeleton, objects, surfaces above and below, and later disturbances.

Stratigraphy does not automatically date the material in a context. An item may be residual—older material redeposited in a later fill—or intrusive, meaning it entered after the original deposition. The Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit cautions: “A very important point must be made which is that radiocarbon often do not directly date the context itself and so a naive use of stratigraphic information to refine the dating of the objects can be quite wrong.” The practical implication is that a measured age must be linked to the burial event by archaeological reasoning.

How archaeologists date a grave, step by step

  1. Excavate and record every relationship. Map the grave’s edges and cut, record its fill and any lining, expose the skeleton in place, and document associated objects. Record the layers that the grave cuts and the deposits that cover or seal it. If another burial cuts the grave, record that relationship as well. A plan, section drawings, photographs and context descriptions preserve information that cannot be recreated after excavation.
  2. Define the event to be dated. Decide whether the question concerns the digging of the grave, the placement of a body, a later reopening, or a subsequent fill episode. A sample can be older than the burial event, so the target event has to be explicit before laboratory results are interpreted.
  3. Select securely associated samples. Prefer short-lived, terrestrial material that was freshly deposited with the burial when such material exists. A sample taken from the grave fill is not automatically associated with the burial; its position, condition and relationship to the cut must be documented. Human bone may be appropriate, but dietary reservoir effects must be considered, especially where the individual consumed substantial aquatic food.
  4. Document pretreatment and contamination controls. Laboratories clean and pretreat samples before measuring them. The record should identify the material, its exact archaeological context, pretreatment procedures and any signs of contamination, conservation material or intrusive material. Old wood, residual charcoal and carbon introduced during excavation or storage can produce an age unrelated to the burial.
  5. Measure carbon-14 and report the conventional result. The laboratory should state the conventional radiocarbon age, its uncertainty, the material dated and the analytical method. The uncertainty belongs to the result; it is not a guarantee that the grave falls inside a single fixed number of years.
  6. Calibrate the measurement. Apply the stated calibration curve and calculation method. Report every calibrated probability range at the stated probability level, including separated ranges created by a calibration plateau. If a reservoir correction was applied, identify the correction and the evidence supporting it.
  7. Build a sequence model. Encode the grave and related contexts as phases, sequences, boundaries, termini and cross-links in a Bayesian model such as OxCal. The model expresses the observed order while allowing each radiocarbon result to retain its probability distribution.
  8. Check agreement and replicate where needed. Compare posterior ranges with the excavated sequence. Investigate outliers instead of averaging incompatible dates. Repeat measurements when association is doubtful, material is disarticulated or there are several plausible deposition histories. Historic England notes that disarticulated bone or carbonised plant remains generally require more repeat measurements than articulating or refitting samples.

Choosing a sample that can stand for the burial

Human bone and the dietary reservoir problem

Bone records carbon incorporated during a person’s life, not necessarily carbon deposited on the day of burial. If the person consumed substantial aquatic foods, the carbon can appear older than contemporary terrestrial material because of a dietary reservoir effect. A laboratory or project specialist may need dietary information and a reservoir correction before the result can be used for the burial event. The correction must be stated rather than silently folded into the date.

Short-lived terrestrial material

A short-lived plant fragment, seed or other terrestrial sample that was deposited with the body can provide a closer proxy for the burial event than long-lived timber. The key is not simply the material category but its archaeological history: it must be demonstrably fresh, securely associated and unlikely to have been reused or redeposited.

Old wood and residual charcoal

Wood can have an age substantially earlier than the grave if the tree was old when cut or if timber was reused. Charcoal from an earlier fire can be residual in a later fill. A statistically precise laboratory result does not repair a poor association. Excavators should record whether a fragment was in primary position, mixed into fill or likely to have come from an earlier deposit.

Intrusive and disturbed material

Roots, burrowing animals, later construction and human disturbance can move carbon-bearing material into a grave after the burial. Disarticulated bones and isolated fragments are especially difficult to assign without a detailed taphonomic and stratigraphic record. When disturbance is plausible, separate samples and an explicit alternative sequence are preferable to treating every fragment as one event.

What calibration changes in the reported date

A conventional radiocarbon age is a measurement with uncertainty. Calibration compares that measurement with the changing atmospheric carbon-14 record represented by an independently dated calibration curve. The output is a calendar probability distribution, not a point estimate. A result may produce a single continuous interval, several disjoint intervals or a range much wider than the laboratory uncertainty suggests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a smaller laboratory uncertainty is not the same as a narrower calendar range

Calibration curves contain sections where calendar age changes slowly. A precise conventional result that intersects such a plateau can map to a broad calendar interval. Conversely, a result intersecting a steep section can yield a narrower range. The shape of the calibrated distribution, not just the plus-or-minus figure on the laboratory report, determines the useful precision.

What a calibrated range means

A calibrated range states where the true calendar age is expected to lie at a specified probability level under the calibration model. If the curve produces two separated intervals, both belong in the report. Choosing only the interval that best fits a preferred historical interpretation hides relevant uncertainty. The probability level and calculation method should be named so another analyst can reproduce the result.

Reservoir corrections and other adjustments

A reservoir correction changes the modeled age to account for carbon that was already old when incorporated into the sample. It is not a universal offset: the size and direction depend on the relevant environment and evidence. Report the correction, its uncertainty and the reason it applies. If no defensible correction is available, the result may need to be treated as a limit or excluded from direct dating of the burial event.

Turning field observations into a Bayesian sequence

Bayesian modeling does not replace excavation judgment. It formalizes that judgment and combines it with the probability distributions from radiocarbon measurements. In OxCal-style terminology, archaeologists can define phases for groups of related deposits, sequences for known order, boundaries for the start or end of an activity, termini for limiting events and cross-links for relationships between separate parts of a site.

Encoding a simple grave sequence

A model might place an earlier ground surface before the grave cut, the burial and its associated deposit inside the grave phase, and a later layer after the grave was filled. If a second burial cuts the first, the second cut is modeled later. A date from a secure sample inside the first burial is constrained by those relationships, while a residual charcoal fragment in the fill can be modeled as older than the burial rather than forced to equal it.

Agreement, conflict and outliers

When a date agrees with the stratigraphic order and with other associated samples, the model can produce a posterior range narrower than an unmodeled calibration. Conflict is informative: it may indicate contamination, a reservoir effect, residual material, a mislabeled sample or an incorrect archaeological relationship. Analysts should inspect the sample history and model assumptions before calculating any combined estimate. Incompatible measurements should not be averaged simply to obtain one attractive number.

Replication strategy

Replication is most valuable where the association is weakest or the consequences of error are greatest. Independent samples from the same articulated burial can test whether one result is anomalous. Disarticulated bone, carbonised plant remains and mixed fills generally warrant more repeat measurements than articulating or refitting material. Replicates should be reported individually before any model combines them.

A documented example of association

Historic England describes a male skeleton dated to 1640±20 BP and a horse in the same grave dated to 1611±20 BP. The two measurements were statistically consistent. Because the archaeological context also indicated a shared burial event, the agreement supported interpreting the dates as evidence for that event rather than as unrelated material in the fill.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The example illustrates the correct order of reasoning. The numerical results alone do not prove that the man and horse were buried together. Their agreement becomes meaningful because the excavated context links them and does not show that one was residual, intrusive or introduced during a later episode.

Radiocarbon and stratigraphy compared

Question or property Radiocarbon dating Stratigraphy Combined interpretation
Primary output Calendar probability range for the measured carbon-bearing sample after calibration Relative order of archaeological contexts Most defensible interval for the burial event, conditional on sample association and sequence
Unit of evidence Selected material submitted to the laboratory Whole contexts and their physical relationships Sample result interpreted within documented contexts
Can it supply a calendar year by itself? No; calibration produces a range, often with more than one interval No; it establishes earlier and later relationships It can constrain a calendar interval, but the answer remains probabilistic
Main vulnerabilities Contamination, old wood, residual or intrusive material, dietary reservoir effects and calibration uncertainty Misidentified cuts, redeposition, disturbance and incomplete recording Incorrect associations or model assumptions can make apparently precise results misleading
Best use Date a suitable, well-characterized sample Establish the sequence of cuts, fills, surfaces and later disturbances Test whether dates and archaeological order support one burial history

Common failure modes and how to correct them

Observed problem Why it happens Appropriate response
A date is older than the apparent grave Old wood, residual charcoal or an earlier deposit entered the fill Re-examine the sample’s position and taphonomy; date a short-lived, securely associated material if available; model the result as a possible older limit rather than the burial date
Human bone dates older than associated terrestrial material A dietary reservoir effect, especially from substantial aquatic-food consumption Assess diet and local reservoir evidence; apply and report a justified correction or exclude the uncorrected bone from direct event dating
Replicate results disagree Contamination, heterogeneous preservation, different deposition histories or an incorrect association Investigate each sample independently, review pretreatment and context records, and test additional samples; do not average incompatible values automatically
The calibrated range is unexpectedly broad The calibration curve has a plateau or the laboratory uncertainty is large Report the full probability distribution and explain the calibration feature; use stratigraphic boundaries and additional secure dates where justified
A date conflicts with the excavated order The sample may be intrusive or residual, the context relationship may be wrong, or the measurement may be an outlier Check labels, laboratory records, field plans and the sequence model before accepting or rejecting the date
A single object is treated as the grave date The object may have been curated, reused or deposited before or after the body Separate the object’s own date from the burial event and explain its relationship to the grave cut and fill

How to read a credible grave-dating report

A reader should be able to trace every conclusion from the laboratory number to the burial interpretation. Look for the following information:

  • Sample material, anatomical part where relevant, and exact archaeological context.
  • Description of the grave cut, fill, skeleton, associated objects and layers above and below.
  • Conventional radiocarbon age and its uncertainty.
  • Calibration curve, software or calculation method, probability level and every calibrated interval.
  • Pretreatment, preservation observations and contamination controls.
  • Dietary or environmental reservoir assessment and any correction applied.
  • Identification of residual, intrusive, redeposited or otherwise uncertain material.
  • Stratigraphic phases, sequences, boundaries, termini and cross-links used in the model.
  • Replicate measurements, agreement statistics and the treatment of outliers.
  • A clear argument explaining why the dated material does—or does not—represent the burial event.

A report that lists only a number, such as a conventional age with a plus-or-minus value, is incomplete. Without the calibration and association evidence, the number cannot be converted responsibly into a date for the grave.

What the combined method can and cannot establish

It can establish a supported interval

When a securely associated sample calibrates to a plausible range and fits the documented sequence, the combined model can identify the calendar interval that best fits the burial event. Additional graves, sealed surfaces and independent samples can strengthen the sequence and reveal whether a burial belongs before or after another event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It cannot produce false precision

Neither method guarantees a single year. A narrow laboratory uncertainty may expand during calibration; a stratigraphic order may still span decades or centuries; and a context can contain material from different times. Precision varies with sample quality, calibration behavior, reservoir effects and contextual association. Official guidance does not provide one universal accuracy percentage for ancient-grave dating, so a single error rate should not be presented as if it applied to every site.

It cannot make an unrelated sample relevant

A radiocarbon result dates the carbon tested. If the material was residual, intrusive, contaminated or unrelated to the burial, better statistical modeling cannot turn it into a direct grave date. The archaeological association must be demonstrated independently and carried through every stage of interpretation.

Bottom line

Archaeologists date ancient graves by combining two kinds of evidence: stratigraphy establishes the relative sequence of cuts, fills and burials, while calibrated radiocarbon dating supplies a probability distribution for selected carbon-bearing material. The grave’s date is the interpretation that survives both tests—sound sample selection and a sequence consistent with the excavated context. Whenever those lines of evidence disagree, the correct response is to investigate association, contamination, reservoir effects and model assumptions, not to choose the most convenient number.
