Choose radiocarbon dating when you have well-provenanced, preserved carbon from a once-living organism and want the time of its death or last carbon exchange. Choose luminescence dating when the target is sediment burial or the last heating of a mineral object, especially where no suitable organic material survives. Radiocarbon ages must be calibrated to calendar time; luminescence ages require a defensible estimate of trapped charge, environmental dose rate and signal resetting. The right method is therefore determined by the event represented by the sample, not simply by which technique is available.
Radiocarbon and luminescence answer different historical questions
A laboratory age is meaningful only if the dated event is the event you are trying to reconstruct. Radiocarbon records when carbon exchange stopped in a plant, animal or other carbon-bearing material. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) records when mineral grains were last exposed to enough light to empty their trapped-charge signal. Thermoluminescence (TL) and related methods record when a material was last heated sufficiently to reset that signal.
That distinction explains why two valid measurements from the same layer can differ: a charcoal fragment may predate the fire layer in which it was found, while quartz in the layer may record the later burial of the sediment. Neither number automatically dates “the site” as a whole.
| Method | Suitable material | Event represented | Principal checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radiocarbon (including AMS) | Bone collagen, charcoal, wood, seeds, other carbon-bearing remains and some shell | Death of the organism or the point when carbon exchange stopped | Preservation, pretreatment, contamination, residual or intrusive material, reservoir effects and calibration |
| OSL | Quartz or feldspar grains in sediment | Last adequate exposure to light before burial | Light-safe sampling, complete or sufficient bleaching, dose-rate measurement, signal stability, saturation and post-depositional mixing |
| TL and related luminescence | Fired ceramics, bricks, burnt stones, hearth materials and other heated artifacts | Last sufficiently intense heating event | Evidence that heating reset the signal, dose-rate history, signal stability, saturation and later heating or mixing |
When radiocarbon is the better choice
Use it for secure, once-living material
Radiocarbon is usually the most direct option when a sample is demonstrably associated with the target event and still contains suitable carbon. Typical materials include bone collagen, short-lived seeds, charcoal from a controlled fire, wood, other carbon-bearing remains and, with additional reservoir considerations, some shell. The result is tied to biological death or the last exchange of carbon with the environment.

For example, a short-lived seed sealed in a construction foundation can closely approach the age of that deposit. A charcoal chip from the same foundation may instead date when the tree ring formed if older wood was burned later. A bone fragment can date the animal’s death, which may precede human deposition, but its context and collagen preservation determine whether that age answers the archaeological question.
Understand what the carbon date does not automatically date
- Old wood or residual charcoal: the organism may have died decades or centuries before it was used.
- Intrusive or redeposited material: roots, burrowing animals, erosion or later human activity can move an older fragment into a younger layer.
- Contamination: conservation materials, soil carbon or handling can add younger or older carbon unless removed during pretreatment.
- Reservoir effects: aquatic or marine organisms can appear older because their carbon was not in equilibrium with the contemporary atmosphere; local offsets must be investigated.
Radiocarbon is not a simple calendar-year reading. Atmospheric carbon-14 varied through time, so the laboratory’s conventional age and standard deviation must be converted with an appropriate calibration curve. The French Ministry of Culture explains that a conventional result must be corrected to obtain a real calendar age; see its guidance on conventional and calibrated ages. Report the calibrated probability ranges, not just the uncalibrated laboratory number.
Know the practical age window
The International Atomic Energy Agency describes accelerator-mass-spectrometry radiocarbon applications for cultural-heritage materials to about 60,000 years, with the usable limit depending on preservation, background carbon and measurement conditions. The figure is an approximate upper application range, not a guarantee that every sample of that age can be dated.

When luminescence is the better choice
Use OSL to date sediment burial
OSL measures charge trapped in quartz or feldspar crystals. Sunlight during transport can release that charge; after burial, natural environmental radiation rebuilds it. The measured signal therefore estimates the time since the grains were last sufficiently exposed to light and then shielded by burial.
OSL is particularly valuable for sand, silt and other mineral deposits with no surviving organic carbon. It can date a dune, flood deposit, construction fill or occupation layer when the grains were adequately bleached before burial. The U.S. Geological Survey describes luminescence as a direct estimate of the last exposure of quartz or feldspar to light or heat and provides a sampling guide for archaeological and geological contexts.
Use TL for a last-heating event
TL and related luminescence methods are appropriate for fired ceramics, bricks, burnt stones and hearth materials. Heating empties the trapped-charge signal; after the object cools, environmental radiation rebuilds it. The resulting age estimates the last sufficiently intense firing, not necessarily manufacture, use or deposition. A reused brick can therefore date an earlier firing than the wall in which it was found, while a stone only warmed superficially may not have been fully reset.

Reset quality controls the result
An OSL age can be too old when grains were not exposed to enough light before burial. Partial bleaching is common in rapidly deposited or turbid environments and must be tested rather than assumed away. TL can fail when heating was inadequate, uneven or followed by another thermal event. Both methods also require checks for unstable signals, saturation and post-depositional mixing.

Radiocarbon versus luminescence: a decision framework
| Question | Radiocarbon | Luminescence |
|---|---|---|
| What must be present? | Preserved carbon from a once-living source | Quartz or feldspar sediment for OSL, or a heated mineral artifact for TL |
| What clock starts? | Death or cessation of carbon exchange | Last adequate light exposure (OSL) or last sufficiently intense heating (TL) |
| What is calculated? | Carbon-14 measurement converted through calibration to calendar-age probability ranges | Equivalent dose divided by environmental dose rate, with protocol-specific uncertainty |
| Main way an age becomes too old | Old wood, residual carbon, reservoir material or older intrusive material | Incomplete bleaching before burial, incomplete heating reset or inherited trapped charge |
| Main way an age becomes too young | Younger contamination or carbon added after the event | Post-depositional mixing, signal loss or an underestimated dose rate |
| Approximate documented reach | AMS applications to about 60,000 years, subject to sample and background limits | From hundreds of years to 300,000 years or more in suitable settings; material, saturation, dose history and protocol determine the practical limit |
The IAEA’s Nuclear Techniques for Cultural Heritage Research discusses luminescence applications extending from hundreds of years to 300,000 years or more in suitable settings; its range should not be treated as a universal performance specification. The same technical overview includes a context-specific uncertainty component of about 5–10% of total error, so the percentage must be read alongside the stated material, protocol and dose-rate assumptions. Consult the IAEA technical publication for those qualifications.
Step-by-step method selection at an archaeological site
- Define the event. Write down whether you need the age of an occupation, burial, construction episode, sediment deposition, firing, or another event. A method is unsuitable if its physical clock does not start at that event.
- Build the context record. Map the stratigraphy, photograph and describe the sample position, record interfaces and note evidence of roots, burrows, erosion, reworking or later construction. A precise laboratory measurement cannot repair an uncertain association.
- Inventory candidate materials. Identify preserved carbon, mineral sediment and heated artifacts separately. Record whether each item is in primary position, sealed, fragmented, weathered or likely to have been reused.
- Match material to clock. Select radiocarbon for secure carbon-bearing material, OSL for mineral grains whose last light exposure preceded burial, and TL or a related method for an object whose last heating is the target event.
- Plan the sampling environment. Protect OSL sediment from light during collection and packaging; follow specialist instructions for opaque tubes or containers. Keep a documented chain of custody. For radiocarbon, use clean tools, gloves and uncontaminated packaging, and preserve enough material for laboratory pretreatment and repeat measurements.
- Use a specialist laboratory. Ask the laboratory to describe pretreatment, sample selection and quality-control tests. For radiocarbon, request the conventional age, standard deviation, calibration curve and calibrated probability ranges. For luminescence, request equivalent dose, dose-rate components, bleaching or heating tests, fading or instability checks where relevant, saturation tests and the statistical model used.
- Audit the event link before interpreting the number. Compare the measured clock with the stratigraphic relationship and expected sequence. Treat an age as evidence about a defined sample and event, not as an automatic date for every artifact in the layer.
- Combine methods only when their events are related. Pairing a radiocarbon date on short-lived plant remains with OSL on the enclosing sediment can test whether burial and occupation are contemporaneous. Combining unrelated events can create a misleadingly precise narrative.
Sampling and laboratory requirements
Radiocarbon sampling
- Choose the smallest amount that still permits reliable pretreatment and measurement, while retaining a reserve for confirmation if possible.
- Prefer short-lived material or clearly documented growth and use histories when the target is a construction or occupation event.
- Separate directly associated material from bulk sediment so that intrusive or residual fragments do not dominate the result.
- Record conservation treatments, adhesives, consolidants, visible roots, burning, waterlogging and any possible marine or freshwater food source.
- Require the laboratory to explain how collagen, charcoal or other material was cleaned and whether quality indicators supported the final measurement.
OSL and TL sampling
- For OSL, prevent daylight from reaching the sediment that will be measured; expose only material deliberately selected for environmental-dose measurements.
- Document grain size, sedimentary structures, transport energy and the likelihood that sunlight fully reset the grains before burial.
- Measure dose-rate contributors from the sediment and surrounding context, including moisture history and radioactive minerals, because dose rate converts equivalent dose into elapsed time.
- For TL, document the artifact’s firing or burning context, evidence of uniform heating and any reuse, repair or later thermal exposure.
- Ask for tests of signal stability, anomalous fading where feldspar is used, saturation and overdispersion or other indicators of mixed grain histories.
These controls are not optional paperwork. Luminescence age is calculated as equivalent dose divided by environmental dose rate, so an error in either quantity changes the age. The Historic England overview of scientific dating methods places such measurements within the wider requirements for archaeological interpretation.

How to read the reported ages
Radiocarbon reports
Keep three pieces of information distinct: the laboratory’s conventional radiocarbon age, its analytical uncertainty and the calibrated calendar-age probability distribution. Calibration can produce more than one calendar interval when the calibration curve has plateaus or wiggles. State the curve, probability level and any reservoir correction used. A calibrated range is not a claim that every year inside it is equally likely.
Luminescence reports
Check the equivalent-dose distribution, the selected aliquots or grains, dose-rate measurements and the uncertainty assigned to each. A wide distribution can indicate partial bleaching, mixing or heterogeneous microenvironments rather than mere instrument noise. Read the central age model or other statistical treatment together with the archaeological evidence for a single depositional event.

Why radiocarbon and luminescence ages disagree
| Observed pattern | Likely explanation | Investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Radiocarbon older than OSL burial age | Old wood or residual charcoal; carbon predates sediment deposition | Identify species and growth history, date short-lived material, inspect stratigraphic association and compare multiple samples |
| OSL older than the archaeological deposit | Incomplete bleaching before burial or inherited trapped charge | Review bleaching tests, grain-size and transport evidence, aliquot or single-grain distributions and overdispersion |
| Radiocarbon younger than the context | Younger carbon contamination, intrusive roots or later carbon exchange | Examine pretreatment, carbon quality, root channels, conservation materials and replicate samples |
| TL older than the artifact’s use in a structure | The object was reused; the measured firing predates construction | Separate manufacture, firing, reuse and deposition events; inspect thermal history and context |
| Broad or internally inconsistent luminescence results | Post-depositional mixing, unstable signal, saturation or variable dose rate | Request signal-decay, fading, saturation, dose-rate and grain-population diagnostics |
| Both methods disagree with stratigraphy | Misidentified context, intrusion, reworking, reservoir effect or an incorrect event model | Revisit the field record and stratigraphic sequence before choosing a preferred number |
Disagreement is a diagnostic result, not a reason to average the ages automatically. First ask whether each sample dates the same event. If not, the difference may be historically meaningful: a buried sediment can be younger than the charcoal incorporated into it, and a reused fired brick can be older than the wall.
Can luminescence date a site with no organic remains?
Often, yes. OSL can date mineral sediment when quartz or feldspar grains were exposed to light before burial and then shielded. TL can date fired or burnt materials when heating sufficiently reset the signal. The absence of organic remains removes radiocarbon as an option, but it does not by itself prove that luminescence will work. Depositional light exposure, heating intensity, dose-rate stability and post-depositional disturbance still have to be demonstrated.
A site with windblown sand and no carbon may be a strong OSL candidate if transport provided thorough bleaching. A dark, rapidly dumped deposit may be difficult because grains could retain an inherited signal. A ceramic fragment may be suitable for TL if its firing was intense and its later history is known; a lightly heated stone may not be.

When using both methods improves the chronology
Multiproxy dating is most informative when each method targets a clearly related event. For an occupation surface, radiocarbon on a short-lived seed can estimate biological death near the occupation, while OSL on the overlying construction sediment can estimate burial. Agreement within uncertainty strengthens the sequence; a systematic offset can reveal residual charcoal, incomplete bleaching or a hiatus.
Design the sampling plan before excavation closes. Collect several independent samples from the same stratigraphic unit, include material from boundaries where reworking is possible, and preserve undated material for later checks. Interpret the set as a sequence constrained by context, not as a competition in which one technique always wins.
Reporting checklist for a defensible date
- State the archaeological event being tested and why the sample is associated with it.
- Name the material and its physical position, including evidence for primary deposition, intrusion or reworking.
- Give the laboratory identifier, conventional or equivalent-dose result, uncertainty and calibrated or modeled age interval.
- For radiocarbon, state pretreatment, calibration curve, probability ranges and any reservoir correction.
- For OSL or TL, state equivalent dose, dose-rate components, reset or bleaching evidence, fading or stability checks and saturation limits.
- Explain contamination, old wood, residual carbon, incomplete bleaching, inadequate heating, bioturbation and moisture or dose-history assumptions that could affect interpretation.
- Keep the numerical age and its archaeological meaning separate: say exactly which event the clock dates and which later or earlier events remain unconstrained.
Bottom line for method choice
Radiocarbon is the first choice for well-provenanced, preserved organic material when the organism’s death is relevant to the question. OSL is the first choice for mineral sediment when burial after adequate light exposure is the target, and TL is the first choice for a demonstrably fired or heated object when its last heating matters. Calibration, dose-rate measurement and reset-quality tests are as important as the instrument reading. If ages disagree, investigate sample history and stratigraphy before rejecting either method or averaging the results.
