RACV Renters Insurance is contents insurance for renters: it can protect belongings against specified insured events and includes liability protection, with portable-contents and accidental-damage cover available as options. Whether it suits you depends on the limits, exclusions, excess and options shown in your quote and Certificate of Insurance—not on a blanket “best” or “cheap” label.
What does RACV renters insurance cover?
RACV describes its renters product as contents insurance, rather than cover for the landlord’s building or permanent fixtures. The product page advertises cover for contents affected by up to 16 insured events, with theft and flood among its examples. The applicable Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) defines those events and their conditions; the headline count does not make every loss automatically covered. RACV’s renters cover summary
RACV advertises up to $20 million in liability cover for claims against the renter and family for death, injury or property damage in Australia. The policy wording determines which circumstances qualify; this is not a promise that every incident, or an incident anywhere in the world, is covered. The policy also describes possible help with reasonable extra rent for up to a year if an insured event makes the rental home unliveable. Check the PDS for applicable conditions and limits. Your cover is set by the policy documents together: the current Certificate of Insurance, the PDS and any applicable Supplementary PDS. RACV’s document index identifies the RACV Home Insurance Product Disclosure Statement and Policy Booklet – October 2023 for policies starting from 11 October 2023 or renewing from 13 November 2023. It identifies the Home Insurance Premium, Excess and Discounts Guide – January 2026 for policies starting from 29 January 2026 or renewing from 15 March 2026. Check your own certificate and applicable documents, since the certificate records your selections and policy period. RACV policy documents

Does RACV cover theft, flood or accidental damage?
Theft and other listed events
Theft is one of the events RACV names in its product summary. The PDS sets the definitions, conditions and exclusions that determine how an event is covered. For example, amended wording applies a 72-hour timing condition to certain listed events, including flood, rainwater run-off, storm and storm surge. Check the applicable wording and any selected removal of flood-related cover rather than assuming every water or weather loss is included. RACV policy documents
Accidental damage
Accidental damage is an optional add-on, not automatic contents cover. RACV uses knocking over a TV as an example. Its claims guidance says a $300 excess applies to accidental-damage claims when this cover is added; check your certificate and terms for the excess that applies to your policy. Are my phone and laptop covered when I take them out?
RACV offers optional Portable Contents cover for items taken outside the home, such as phones, cameras, laptops and jewellery. Its product page says eligible items are typically covered up to $10,000 per item in Australia and New Zealand, or more if separately listed, with a $10,000 total limit outside those countries. These are stated limits, not a guarantee that any loss or damage will qualify: check the policy’s definitions, triggers, territory and listing requirements. RACV portable contents details
How do valuables limits work?
RACV says $2,500 is included for each listed valuables category and offers an option to increase category cover. Its examples of categories include jewellery and watches, collections, music, games and movies, and art. A category limit may not match the value of a particular item, so identify the relevant category and confirm whether a valuable must be separately listed to receive higher cover. How much contents insurance should I choose?
Estimate what it would cost to repair or replace your belongings at today’s prices, then compare that total with the sum insured and any category or item limits. RACV warns that underinsurance can leave you short. A larger sum insured does not mean a claim pays more than the actual covered repair or replacement cost. Your Certificate of Insurance shows the selected sum insured and applicable limits and options. RACV guidance on contents cover RACV claims guidance
RACV’s product page also states limits for particular situations: up to $500 for spoiled food and prescription medicine, and up to two weeks of contents cover during an Australian move, subject to stated conditions. Check the policy wording before relying on either benefit. RACV renters insurance details
What excess will I pay if I claim?
RACV’s claims guidance lists basic excess choices from $100 to $5,000. It says accidental-damage claims use a $300 excess instead of the basic excess, and a special excess may also apply. Your Certificate of Insurance is the place to check the actual amount for your policy. A higher excess may reduce the premium but increases what you pay towards a claim; a loss below the applicable excess may not be worth claiming. RACV home insurance claims guidance
What is not covered?
RACV gives examples of items or losses it does not cover, including structures and fixtures, intentional loss or damage caused by the insured or someone allowed into the home, business stock, certain vehicles, and wear, rust or gradual deterioration. These examples are not the full exclusion list. Read the PDS for the wording that applies to your event and belongings. RACV renters insurance RACV renters insurance explainer RACV policy documents

How do RACV contents claims work?
RACV says contents claims can be lodged online at any time or by phone. It may request proof of ownership such as receipts, payment statements, packaging, photographs or a valuation certificate. Depending on the circumstances and policy terms, settlement may involve repair or restoration, replacement arranged through suppliers, store credit or cash. RACV’s general claims guidance lists an event not being covered, the selected insurance type not covering the loss, missing required information, or no valid policy at the time as possible reasons a claim may be denied. How should I compare RACV with another renters policy?
Compare policies on matching terms rather than headline premiums. RACV says premiums are individualized and renewal prices may change, so a current quote is needed to judge cost. Use the same address, household details, contents sum insured, optional covers and excess for each quote. Then compare the following policy features:
- Events and definitions: theft, flood, storm, water escape, accidental damage and any event restrictions.
- Limits: total contents sum insured, valuables categories, portable-item caps and rules for separately listing items.
- Excesses: basic, accidental-damage and special excesses, including what you would pay for a likely claim.
- Away-from-home cover: whether it is included or optional, where it applies, what loss or damage triggers cover and per-item caps.
- Claims: possible settlement methods and what proof of ownership may be required.
- Price: compare quotes only after aligning cover, limits and excess, not by price alone.
CHOICE’s feature summary can help identify comparison points, but the insurer’s current documents govern exact terms.

RACV may be worth considering if its listed-event cover, liability protection and available options match the belongings and risks you need to insure. The decision hinges on your selected sum insured, valuables and portable-item limits, excess, exclusions and quoted premium. The evidence here does not establish a matched competitor price or a universal value verdict.
