RACT separates contents cover at the insured address from optional portable-item cover for certain belongings away from home. Renters should check both the geographic scope and the policy documents that apply to their own cover: RACT says its contents coverage is suitable within Tasmania, while its Target Market Determination describes portable-item cover in Australia and New Zealand.
What RACT contents insurance is designed to cover
RACT describes contents insurance as cover for belongings at the insured address. Its official Contents Insurance page says: “Our contents insurance coverage is suitable for contents within Tasmania.” That makes the product’s stated contents scope important for renters: the policy is presented for household possessions at the insured home, not as general cover for belongings wherever they happen to be.
RACT advertises new-for-old replacement and lists events including fire, storm and flood. These are product-summary statements, not a promise that every item or loss will be covered; policy terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply.
How portable-item cover differs
Portable-item cover is an optional extra in RACT’s product summary. RACT describes it as cover for certain items stolen, lost or accidentally damaged outside the home. It is distinct from contents cover at the insured address, so a renter should not assume that ordinary contents cover follows belongings when they leave home.

RACT’s Target Market Determination (TMD), effective 5 March 2026, describes portable-item cover for Australia and New Zealand. The TMD explains the intended market for the product; it does not replace the operative policy wording or the customer’s certificate. Those documents govern the cover and limits that apply to an individual policy.
Options renters may need to consider
Accidental-damage cover
RACT presents accidental-damage cover as optional. Check the applicable policy documents to understand which accidental losses qualify and whether this option applies to contents, portable items, or both.

Valuables and specified items
RACT’s product page mentions flexible limits for valuables such as jewellery and collectibles, and asks “What is a specified item?” The page does not establish the limit or requirements that apply to a particular policy. Confirm whether an item must be individually listed, what value is accepted, and what evidence may be needed before relying on cover.

Situations the TMD flags for attention
The TMD describes circumstances the product is not designed for, including contents kept away from the insured address—for example, in commercial storage—without RACT’s prior agreement. It also flags portable items used in business activity and musical, sporting or recreational portable items while in use. These are target-market statements, not a substitute for checking whether a specific circumstance is covered or excluded under the operative PDS.

Check the documents before buying or making a claim
RACT’s insurance documents index directs customers to read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and TMD. The detailed Supplementary Product Disclosure Statement (SPDS) available for review was prepared 22 September 2023 and effective 9 November 2023; an underlying PDS transcription states it took effect 1 April 2021. Those documents are dated, so they should not be treated as confirmation of current limits or terms.
The available current index does not establish a dated current base PDS or full current wording. As a result, current item limits, excesses and the complete exclusions cannot be confirmed here. Before buying or claiming, use the PDS and any SPDS that apply to your policy, together with your certificate. RACT expressly advises prospective buyers to consult its PDS.

Is RACT a fit for a renter?
RACT may be relevant if your belongings are at an insured address in Tasmania and you want to consider optional cover for specified items away from home. The key decision is whether the documents for your policy cover the possessions and situations you care about—not simply whether an item appears in RACT’s product summary. Check the address, item requirements, applicable geographic scope, exclusions, excesses and limits in the operative documents before deciding.
