Racksmith is described by its creator as an AI-assisted planner for Eurorack modular synthesizer builds. It uses structured module and case data to propose a layout, check selected fit and power constraints, surface specification conflicts, and show the rack in a 3D visualizer. Those capabilities are claims in the creator’s project submission, not independently tested results.
What Racksmith is designed to do
Racksmith is presented as a planning application for assembling Eurorack modules into a case. Its stated differentiator is revision-aware product information: the project describes records for modules and cases that retain technical specifications and their provenance, rather than treating every product listing as interchangeable.
According to the creator’s DEV Community project submission, published October 1, 2026, an AI agent queries that structured information through a Sanity-backed Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. The submission describes tools for searching the knowledge base, retrieving module and case records, finding specification contradictions, validating a proposed rack, and saving a user’s decisions. It also says a 3D visualizer displays the proposed arrangement.
What the described checks cover
The project says its data includes each module’s width in HP, mechanical depth, and power draw on the +12V, -12V, and +5V rails. Case records are described as including total HP, depth clearance, and power capacity. The stated validation checks are limited to these conditions:

- The combined module width must not exceed the case’s total HP.
- A module’s depth must not exceed the case’s stated clearance.
- The stated +12V current must not exceed 80% of the case’s stated +12V capacity.
That list is not a complete electrical-safety assessment. The example code in the submission totals +12V current and applies its threshold; it does not establish that every relevant electrical factor, rail, connector, or real-world installation condition is assessed. Treat a planner result as a screening aid, not proof that a rack is safe or suitable.
What the demo example shows—and does not prove
The creator’s demo prompt asks for an “ambient sound design rack with complex modulation and reverb,” with a request to check depth and power limits. The described result selects Plaits, Rings, Beads, and a modern SMD revision of Maths. The submission reports a 60 HP rack in a 62 HP case and 360 mA on +12V against a 960 mA threshold.

These figures are the author’s example output, not independently checked specifications for those modules or a recommendation for a physical build. The project submission also reports its own data-set counts—33 modules, 4 cases, 8 manufacturers, 6 claims, and 3 contradictions. Those are project-specific counts, not a measure of the wider Eurorack market.

A module’s specification can vary by revision, and case capacity or clearance is specific to the case. Racksmith’s stated ability to preserve provenance and surface contradictions addresses a real planning concern: a calculation is only as dependable as the data and assumptions behind it. Before buying or powering a real rack, check the manufacturer documentation for the exact module revision and case, including depth and power information. Resolve conflicting specifications against authoritative documentation rather than assuming the planner’s selected value is correct.

How to assess a rack-planning tool
Racksmith’s described features suggest practical questions to ask of any planner, whether the data is entered manually or retrieved from a catalog:
- Revision and provenance: Can you tell which exact version a module record describes and where its specifications came from?
- Physical fit: Does the tool account for both total HP and case depth clearance?
- Power assumptions: Does it represent the relevant power rails, show its thresholds, and make clear what it does not validate?
- Conflicting data: Can you inspect competing claims and understand which value the calculation uses?
- Useful layout output: Does the visual arrangement help you plan the actual build, beyond reporting that it fits on paper?
The October 1, 2026 project submission is first-party evidence of what its creator says the application was built to do. It does not independently establish that the live application behaves as described, that its underlying data is accurate or current, or that a particular layout is compatible with a reader’s hardware.
