RAC Essentials is a UK breakdown-cover offer associated with Compare the Market, but its current price and full cover could not be verified as of 7 October 2026. RAC’s own terms confirm a promotion for Essentials customers, while an older RAC Essential policy summary gives only a historical, schedule-dependent outline. Neither establishes what a new quote includes today. Check the policy schedule attached to your quote before deciding whether it suits you.
What is RAC Essentials?
RAC’s terms identify RAC Essentials as UK breakdown cover sold through Compare the Market. The official material available here does not confirm that the offer is currently available, or establish its current price, benefits or exclusions. The RAC direct site lists Basic, Standard, Extra and Complete; those are different product labels and do not prove what an Essentials quote includes.
RAC’s terms also describe a free car health-check promotion for new customers buying non-excess Essentials cover through Compare the Market. That offer ended at 10am on 14 September 2026, so it should not be treated as an active benefit. RAC’s offer terms set out the promotion.
What the older Essential policy summary says
An older RAC Essential no-excess Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) provides a useful indication of the cover described in that document, but its current status is not established. Its features were subject to the customer’s schedule and policy terms, so do not assume they apply to a current Essentials quote.

- Other listed cover: At Home, Recovery, Onward Travel and European Breakdown appear in the summary, but optional levels are subject to availability and the customer’s schedule.
Read the older Essential no-excess IPID as a document-specific summary, not a guarantee of current cover.
Exclusions and limits to check
The same older IPID lists breakdowns that happened before cover began, incidents that are not breakdowns (such as a road traffic collision), business vehicles, parts costs, and vehicles without valid MOT, tax or insurance among its exclusions. It also notes other restrictions and limits. Your current policy wording and schedule—not the older summary—determine the cover you have.

In particular, check whether the cover applies to your vehicle and its use, what counts as a breakdown, whether parts or repair costs are included, and whether any callout or other limits apply. An insurer or breakdown provider may distinguish assistance from paying for the parts needed to complete a repair.

How to assess a quote
Compare the actual Essentials quote and attached schedule against the help you want. RAC’s comparison guidance points readers toward the features and eligibility conditions that determine whether a policy fits.

- Recovery destination: confirm whether a tow is limited to a stated distance or takes you to a destination of your choice. RAC’s general FAQ says Basic roadside towing is up to 10 miles, while Extra and Complete include National Recovery; those statements do not establish Essentials benefits.
- Cover at home: check whether assistance starts at your home address or only beyond a specified distance.
- Callout limits: establish whether the schedule caps the number of callouts or restricts particular types of assistance.
- Who and what is covered: verify whether cover attaches to a named person or a vehicle, and whether your vehicle, age, condition and use are eligible.
- Optional extras and start dates: confirm what is included, what costs extra, and whether any benefit has a waiting period. RAC’s general FAQ says Onward Travel, Key Replace, Battery Replace and Tyre Replace start after seven days; this is not proof of the Essentials schedule.
- Total price and payment: use the price and payment terms in your own quote. RAC’s direct page displays starting prices that at least 10% of new customers pay for single-vehicle cover; these are not a verified Essentials price.
RAC describes membership as annual with a monthly payment option in its general FAQ. Check the quote for the term, payment arrangement and any applicable conditions rather than assuming another RAC product’s terms carry over. Is RAC Essentials worth considering?
There is not enough verified current information to give a reliable value verdict or recommend Essentials over another policy. The older IPID suggests that the product name has been associated with a defined set of breakdown benefits, but the schedule-dependent details and the unknown current terms make a present-day recommendation uncertain.

It may be worth considering if a live quote is available and its price, recovery arrangements, home cover, eligibility rules and exclusions match your needs. If those terms are unclear or the quote lacks a current schedule, do not use the older IPID or expired promotion as a substitute: ask the seller for the current policy wording and schedule before buying.

Practical backup: prepare for a flat battery
A portable jump starter can help with some flat-battery situations, but it is not an included Essentials feature and does not replace breakdown cover. RAC’s jump-start guidance discusses jump leads and booster packs. Follow the vehicle and equipment instructions, and remember that a jump starter will not fix faults unrelated to the battery.
