RAA Basics is an international single-trip travel insurance option underwritten by Tokio Marine. Its clearest strength is unlimited overseas medical and hospital expenses under the September 2025 Product Disclosure Statement (PDS); its biggest gap is that it does not cover cancellation fees or lost deposits. That makes the plan a poor fit for trips with substantial prepaid, non-refundable costs unless you can absorb that loss yourself.
What RAA Basics is
CHOICE identifies RAA Basics as a one-trip policy underwritten by Tokio Marine, and RAA’s September 2025 PDS lists it among the insurer’s international single-trip options. The PDS, rather than a review summary, is the key document for understanding the terms that apply to a policy.
RAA says Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. issues the insurance. RAA acts as an authorised representative and receives a commission that is a percentage of the premium; it may also receive a portion of underwriting profit. See RAA’s disclosure and product information.
What the September 2025 PDS lists for Basics
The following are headline limits per adult for the international Basics plan. They are subject to policy wording, exclusions, sublimits and other applicable conditions; a headline limit does not guarantee payment for every claim.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

| Emergency expenses | $5,000 |

For luggage, CHOICE’s public review also reports a $350 limit per ordinary item and $750 for a camera or laptop/tablet. The PDS’s detailed item table and wording should govern any specific claim, since exclusions and sublimits can affect what is payable. Read CHOICE’s public RAA review.
The main trade-off: medical cover without cancellation cover
Medical expenses
Unlimited overseas medical and hospital expenses is a high headline limit, but it is not an unconditional promise to pay any bill. The policy wording sets the covered circumstances and exclusions. Read the applicable PDS for those terms and check that your Certificate of Insurance reflects the cover you selected.

Prepaid bookings
Basics does not cover cancellation fees or lost deposits, including the cancellation categories listed in the PDS. If you have non-refundable flights, accommodation, tours or other bookings, compare the amount you could lose with what you can comfortably pay yourself. Do not assume that the medical limit protects those costs.
Other practical gaps
The PDS also lists no cover at the Basics level for rental-car excess, travel documents, luggage delay, personal money, resumption of travel, special-event expenses, or the specified emergency expenses relating to a relative or travelling companion. Its listed limits for luggage, dental and emergency expenses are capped. These gaps matter if any are central to your trip.

How to decide whether Basics fits your trip
- Start with cancellation exposure: total your non-refundable trip costs and decide whether you could absorb them. Basics does not insure cancellation fees or lost deposits.
- Check medical needs and activities: consider your destination, planned activities, health circumstances and the policy’s exclusions, not just the word “unlimited.”
- Review luggage values: compare the $2,000 headline luggage limit and applicable item sublimits with what you are taking. Basics does not cover luggage delay or personal money.
- Check trip-specific options: RAA’s PDS describes cruise and ski/winter-sports options and related benefit sections. Do not treat these as automatically included in Basics; verify any required option and its selection on the certificate.
- Compare like with like: compare plans using the same destination, trip dates, traveller details, chosen excess and benefits. The cited public sources do not establish a current premium comparison.
RAA-reported 2024 research says 78 per cent of South Australian travellers prioritised medical expense cover, 77 per cent considered cancellation important, and 66 per cent valued protection for lost or delayed luggage. RAA’s 2026 article reports these findings but does not provide the survey sample size or methodology, so they should not be read as representative of all travellers. See RAA’s 2026 summary of the findings.
