Choose the Retroid Pocket 4 if Nintendo 3DS is an important part of your plan. CompareHandhelds rates Nintendo 3DS as unsupported on the R36S and fair on the Retroid Pocket 4, while HandheldDatabase lists 3DS as playable on the Pocket 4. Those are platform-level ratings, not promises that every game will run perfectly, but they make the Pocket 4 the only practical 3DS choice between these two handhelds.

The R36S is still attractive when your priority is a small, inexpensive device for 8-bit, 16-bit and PlayStation 1-era games. It costs about $100 less in CompareHandhelds’ 2026 comparison snapshot, is lighter, and has a screen naturally suited to classic 4:3 systems. The extra money for the Pocket 4 buys substantially faster hardware, a touchscreen, motion sensing, better controls and a modern Android platform.

Nintendo 3DS performance: the deciding factor

What the published ratings actually say

CompareHandhelds lists the R36S under Nintendo 3DS as Unsupported. The same comparison lists the Retroid Pocket 4 as Fair. HandheldDatabase independently lists Nintendo 3DS as Playable on the Pocket 4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Fair” and “Playable” should not be read as a guarantee for every title. Nintendo 3DS emulation can vary with the game, emulator build, graphics settings and control configuration. The available sources do not provide a standardized per-game benchmark, an emulator-version matrix or a controlled test of battery life. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the Pocket 4 is the only practical 3DS option of these two, with results that must still be checked game by game.

Why the R36S is not a sensible 3DS purchase

The R36S is built around hardware intended for much older systems. Its Rockchip RK3326 processor, Mali-G31 MP2 graphics and 1 GB of DDR3L memory are a poor match for the substantially heavier 3DS emulation workload. Its ArkOS and RetroArch-oriented software stack is designed around classic systems rather than Android 3DS applications. A buyer seeking 3DS should not choose the R36S hoping that a future setting or firmware update will turn it into a capable 3DS machine.

What the Pocket 4 can and cannot reproduce

The Pocket 4’s faster processor and Android environment provide a realistic route to 3DS emulation, but its 4.7-inch display is still one physical screen. It cannot reproduce the original console’s two separate screens at their native physical size. You may need to switch layouts, use a scaled second-screen view or accept smaller game areas. Touch and motion controls are available, which is much closer to the original interaction model than the R36S can offer.

Hardware gap

Specification R36S Retroid Pocket 4
Processor Rockchip RK3326, quad-core Cortex-A35 MediaTek Dimensity 900; 2 Cortex-A78 cores at 2.4 GHz plus 6 Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0 GHz
Graphics Mali-G31 MP2 Mali-G68 MC4 at 900 MHz
Memory 1 GB DDR3L 4 GB LPDDR4X
Operating system ArkOS with RetroArch for classic systems Android 11 with Android app support and OTA updates
Cooling Not stated in the supplied specifications Active cooling

The Pocket 4 has four times as much listed memory and a much newer CPU/GPU combination. Its two high-performance Cortex-A78 cores run at up to 2.4 GHz, supported by six efficiency-focused Cortex-A55 cores at up to 2.0 GHz. Retroid lists Mali-G68 MC4 graphics at 900 MHz. In contrast, the R36S uses a quad-core Cortex-A35 design and only 1 GB of DDR3L RAM. That hardware gap explains the difference in system targets: the R36S concentrates on older retro consoles, while the Pocket 4 has enough headroom for demanding Android emulation.

Controls, touchscreen and motion input

Retroid Pocket 4

  • 4.7-inch touchscreen for menus, virtual controls and games that expect touch input.
  • 3D Hall-effect sticks, which are designed to reduce the stick-wear and drift concerns associated with conventional potentiometer sticks.
  • Analog L2 and R2 triggers for games that use graduated acceleration, braking or other analog actions.
  • Gyroscope for motion-controlled input where the emulator and game support it.

These features matter for 3DS beyond simple button count. Many 3DS games use the lower screen for touch interaction, and some use motion or analog input. The Pocket 4 cannot create a second physical display, but it can accept the kinds of touch and motion commands that a non-touch handheld cannot.

R36S

The R36S has the conventional controls expected of a compact retro handheld, but its 3.5-inch IPS panel has no documented touch input in the supplied specifications. That is adequate for button-driven 8-bit, 16-bit and PS1 games. It is a fundamental limitation for 3DS titles whose menus or gameplay depend on a stylus-like touch interface.

Displays and aspect ratios

Display detail R36S Retroid Pocket 4
Size 3.5 inches 4.7 inches
Resolution 640×480 750×1334
Panel/use IPS, 4:3-oriented Touchscreen, listed at 60 fps and 500 nits by Retroid
Best fit Classic 4:3 systems Modern Android games and widescreen-friendly emulation

The R36S’s 640×480 4:3 panel matches the shape of many older consoles. Games can fill the screen without large side bars, and the small body remains easy to carry. The Pocket 4’s 4.7-inch panel is larger and sharper, with a tall 750×1334 specification, 60-fps operation and a quoted 500-nit brightness from Retroid. Its 16:9-class presentation is more comfortable for Android software and many newer systems.

There is a trade-off when using the Pocket 4 for older consoles: games designed for 4:3 may display black bars at the sides unless you crop or stretch the image. Stretching changes geometry, while cropping removes part of the picture. The R36S avoids that compromise for the systems it targets.

Battery life and portability

R36S: lighter, simpler and easier to pocket

The R36S is the smaller and lighter device according to CompareHandhelds. Its vendor advertises up to five hours of play. That is a usage-dependent claim: brightness, volume, emulator, game and battery condition all affect the result. CompareHandhelds reports longer average battery life for the R36S than for the Pocket 4 in its comparison snapshot, but those figures are source-specific estimates rather than a standardized laboratory test.

Pocket 4: larger battery, higher workload

Retroid lists a 5000 mAh battery for the Pocket 4. The device also includes active cooling, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and a larger display. Those features add capability but do not guarantee longer runtime; demanding 3DS emulation uses considerably more processing power than a simple 16-bit emulator. Treat the 5000 mAh figure as a capacity specification, not a universal hours estimate.

For travel, the choice is therefore not simply “bigger battery versus smaller battery.” The R36S wins on weight and pocketability. The Pocket 4 is heavier but offers the performance and controls needed for the newer systems that justify carrying it.

Operating system, connectivity and expansion

R36S software approach

The R36S uses ArkOS with RetroArch as its classic-emulation front end. That arrangement is focused and relatively appliance-like: select a system, choose a game and use the handheld controls. It is a good fit for a curated retro library, but it does not provide the Android application ecosystem that makes the Pocket 4 practical for 3DS software.

Pocket 4 software approach

The Pocket 4 ships with Android 11. Android gives you access to compatible emulator applications, file managers, controller-mapping tools and ordinary Android apps. Retroid also lists OTA updates, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and video out. Wi-Fi can simplify downloading updates and transferring files on a home network; Bluetooth supports compatible wireless accessories; video out lets you use a larger display when the particular game and adapter setup support it.

Storage expansion

Both devices support expandable storage through a microSD or TF card. Capacity, speed and card reliability affect library management and loading behavior, so use a reputable card and keep a backup of saves. Expansion does not change a system’s emulation capability: adding more storage to an R36S will not make unsupported 3DS software run.

Price and value

CompareHandhelds reports the R36S as about $100 cheaper than the Retroid Pocket 4 in its 2026 comparison snapshot. Retail pricing, stock and bundles change, so check the current listing before buying rather than treating that difference as a permanent price. The Pocket 4’s premium pays for a faster chipset, four times the listed RAM, a touchscreen, motion sensing, analog triggers, Hall-effect sticks, Android 11 and modern wireless features. The R36S’s value comes from doing less, well: inexpensive access to older systems in a compact body.

How to set up the Pocket 4 for 3DS

  1. Update the handheld. Connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network, install available Android and OTA updates, then restart before configuring emulation.
  2. Prepare expandable storage. Insert a reliable microSD/TF card if you need more room. Create a clear folder structure for legally obtained game backups and keep save backups separate from the game files.
  3. Install a compatible 3DS emulator. Use a reputable, current Android distribution and read its system requirements. Emulator availability and compatibility can change, so do not assume that one application behaves like another.
  4. Configure the controls. Map the left and right sticks, face buttons, shoulder buttons and analog L2/R2 triggers. Confirm that the emulator sees the Hall-effect sticks as analog axes rather than digital buttons.
  5. Set up touch and motion. Test the touchscreen for menus and lower-screen actions. If a game uses motion, enable the emulator’s gyroscope input and calibrate it while the handheld is resting level.
  6. Choose a two-screen layout. Start with a layout that keeps the active game screen large and the secondary screen readable. Because the Pocket 4 has one physical display, try alternate layouts for games that use the lower screen constantly.
  7. Test one game at a time. Check booting, audio, frame pacing, touch response, save behavior and sleep/resume. If a title performs poorly, try conservative resolution or accuracy settings before concluding that every 3DS game is incompatible.
  8. Back up saves. Copy save data to another device periodically. Firmware changes, emulator updates and storage failures can all put progress at risk.

When the R36S is still the right purchase

Buy the R36S when your library is primarily NES-, SNES-, Mega Drive-, arcade- or PS1-era software and you value a low price, low weight and a 4:3 display more than modern features. Its ArkOS/RetroArch setup is purpose-built for that use, and the vendor says the R36S provides access to “over 20,000 retro games ready to play: RPG, fighting, adventure, arcade and more.” That number is a vendor marketing claim, not an independently audited library count, and the legality of any included game files depends on how they were sourced.

Do not buy it as a speculative 3DS device. The platform rating is unsupported, the screen is not documented as touch-enabled and the RK3326/1 GB hardware is aimed at much older systems.

When paying more for the Pocket 4 makes sense

The Pocket 4 earns its premium if you want Nintendo 3DS alongside older consoles, need touchscreen or motion input, prefer Android applications, or expect to use wireless accessories and video out. Its Dimensity 900 platform, 4 GB of LPDDR4X memory and active cooling give it the necessary headroom for a broader range of emulation, although no source cited here establishes smooth performance for every individual 3DS title.

It is also the better long-term fit if your interests may expand beyond classic 4:3 systems. The larger touchscreen, analog triggers, Hall-effect sticks and gyroscope are useful outside 3DS as well. The trade-offs are a higher and changing purchase price, a heavier body, possible black bars with older games and battery life that depends heavily on workload.

Bottom-line buying decision

For the question “R36S vs Retroid Pocket 4 for 3DS,” choose the Retroid Pocket 4. It is the only model of the two with a credible 3DS path, and its touch, motion and analog controls address input requirements the R36S cannot. Expect game-by-game variation and a single-screen compromise rather than guaranteed perfect emulation.

Choose the R36S only when Nintendo 3DS is not a requirement and your priority is the cheapest, lightest handheld for older retro systems. Saving roughly $100 is worthwhile in that narrower use case; it is not a good trade if the main reason for buying is 3DS.
