R is a free, cross-platform programming language and computing environment built around statistical computing and graphics. It can handle data, perform calculations, create visualizations, and run programs you write yourself. Here are seven practical points to help you understand what R does, what is new in 2026, and where to begin.

1. R is a language and a computing environment

R is not just a fixed statistics package. The R Project describes it as an environment for statistical computing and graphics, with facilities for data handling, calculation, and programming. That combination lets you work with data and write instructions that automate or extend your work. R Project: What is R?

2. R is a real programming language

R includes familiar programming features such as conditionals, loops, user-defined functions, recursion, and input/output. In practice, you can write a function once and call it wherever you need that operation, rather than relying only on commands built into a graphical application. The official overview describes these language facilities at What is R?

3. Statistics and graphics are core strengths

R is designed to support a broad range of statistical techniques and graphics, including graphics intended for publication. This makes it useful for exploring data, carrying out statistical work, and presenting results visually. The existence of a capability does not make every method appropriate or every analysis easy: choosing a sound method still depends on the question and the data. R Project: What is R?

4. Packages extend what R can do

R’s base installation can be extended with packages, which add functions and other capabilities. The R Project points users to the CRAN family of sites for contributed packages. This extensibility is one reason R can serve different kinds of statistical and data workflows; it also means that a project may depend on packages beyond base R. R Project: What is R?

5. R is free software and runs on major desktop platforms

The R Project makes R available in source form under the GNU General Public License. It runs on UNIX platforms, Windows, and macOS, so you can use the same language across those operating-system families. See the R Project homepage for official downloads and project information.

6. The 2026 release context is R 4.6.1

As of October 11, 2026, the R Project homepage lists R 4.6.1, “Happy Hop,” released June 24, 2026. It lists R 4.6.2, “Diversified Portfolio,” as planned for October 29, 2026, with prereleases scheduled to start October 19. Those dates make 4.6.2 a future planned release on October 11, not a final release. Check the R Project homepage and R Developer Page for status if you are reading this after the planned dates.

7. Most R 4.6.0 changes matter more to package developers

The R 4.6.0 developer notes describe changes that are especially relevant to people maintaining compiled packages. The default C++ standard changed to C++20 where available, with C++17 as a fallback where available; package specifications for C++11 and C++14 were removed. The graphics engine version also moved to 17, which means graphics-device packages need to be reinstalled. Beginners learning R do not need to start with these compatibility details, but developers of compiled or graphics-device packages should review the R 4.6.0 changes.

Where to start learning

Start with the official documentation index, which includes An Introduction to R and The R Language Definition. The introduction is a sensible first stop for learning the language; the language definition can help when you want a more formal account of how R works. For a beginner, a practical sequence is to learn basic expressions and data handling, then functions and control flow, followed by graphics and the packages relevant to your work. The R Foundation also identifies teaching and training in statistical computing among its goals. R Language documentation index · The R Foundation
