Quordle is won by managing information, not by solving one board in isolation. Use your first two or three guesses to test many different common letters, record the green, yellow and gray results separately for all four boards, then switch to constraint-based guesses as answers become clearer. You have nine shared attempts, so every guess should either reveal useful information on several unsolved boards or be a well-supported attempt to finish one.
What makes Quordle different from a normal word puzzle?
Quordle presents four hidden five-letter answers at the same time. You enter one valid five-letter English word, and that same guess is evaluated against every board that is still unsolved. The result can be completely different on each board: a letter may be green in one position on Board 1, yellow on Board 2 and gray on Boards 3 and 4. The game gives you nine total attempts to solve all four answers, not nine attempts per board. The Quordle game instructions describe the central challenge as follows: “Each attempt reveals clues on all boards, so think strategically and solve them all.”
| Rule | What it means for your decisions |
|---|---|
| Four boards | Maintain a separate set of constraints for each answer. Never transfer a color result from one board to another. |
| Five-letter answers | Every submitted guess must be a five-letter word that the game accepts. |
| Nine total attempts | The guesses are a shared budget. A turn used on one board is also a turn consumed on the other three. |
| One guess reaches all unsolved boards | Early guesses can gather clues on several boards at once; later guesses can be aimed at a particular remaining answer. |
| Green feedback | The letter is in the correct position on that board. |
| Yellow feedback | The letter occurs in that board’s answer but is in a different position. |
| Gray feedback | The letter is absent from that board’s answer. |
| No repeated guesses | The rules page says a submitted word cannot be repeated, so keep a record of every word you have played. |
| Four-part keyboard display | The on-screen keyboard divides keys into four board quadrants, allowing you to inspect each board’s letter status separately. |
The rules, color meanings and no-repeat requirement are documented on the Quordle rules page. The pages reviewed for this guide do not establish whether either implementation is the current official version associated with Merriam-Webster, so treat the instructions above as the rules of the described game pages rather than a claim about publisher status.

At the start, you know almost nothing about four different words but have only nine shared turns. A useful guess therefore has two jobs: it should be accepted by the game, and it should test letters that could reduce uncertainty on several boards. Once a board has several fixed positions, the best word may instead be one that fits that board exactly. The right strategy changes as the information changes.

Use the first two or three guesses for coverage
The rules guidance recommends using the opening two or three guesses to test as many unique letters as possible. It names E, A, R, S, T, O, L, I and N as common letters. This is general guidance, not a statistically validated opening sequence, and it does not identify a guaranteed first word. Choose accepted words that collectively cover many of those letters while avoiding unnecessary repeats between your early guesses.
Think of the opening as a survey. A word that repeats a letter you already tested may still be correct, but it usually reveals less new information than a word containing several untested letters. You are not trying to solve a particular board immediately; you are trying to learn which letter families and positions are plausible across all four.
Keep every board’s evidence independent
Make four small records, one for each board. For each, write down:
- Green letters and their fixed positions.
- Yellow letters and the positions where they cannot go based on the guesses so far.
- Gray letters that this board has ruled out.
- The words already tried, so you do not submit a repeat.
A letter’s status is local to a board. If A is gray on Board 1 but yellow on Board 3, you must exclude A from candidates for Board 1 while retaining it for Board 3. The quadrant keyboard helps you see this distinction, but a written grid is safer when several clues accumulate.
Spend a turn on a narrow solve only when it is justified
Early in the game, avoid using a guess that helps only one board if the other three still have little information. The rules guidance explicitly recommends helping all four boards where possible. A targeted word becomes sensible when it fits a strong pattern, tests a decisive unresolved letter, or when only one board remains. This is a practical consequence of the shared nine-turn limit, not a measured success-rate claim.
A nine-guess workflow you can repeat
The following process turns the rules into a usable routine. It is not a guarantee; the source material reports qualitative strategy advice rather than a tested opening, solver or win percentage.

- Map the starting state. Label the four boards and prepare a note for each. Leave room for five positions, yellow exclusions and gray letters. Confirm that you are entering five-letter words accepted by the game.
- Play a high-coverage first guess. Select a word with several different letters, favoring common letters such as E, A, R, S, T, O, L, I and N. Avoid repeating a letter solely because it feels familiar. Submit it once and inspect all four result rows.
- Record the feedback immediately. For every board, mark greens in their exact positions, list yellows with their known exclusions, and add grays to that board’s absent-letter list. Do not copy a gray or yellow result to another board.
- Choose a complementary second guess. Prefer a valid word that tests many letters not covered by the first guess. It can still include a green or yellow when doing so helps locate that letter, but its main purpose is to expand coverage while the boards are still uncertain.
- Rebuild the four candidate sets. After two guesses, each board should have its own pattern and exclusions. Cross out any word that violates a green position, places a yellow in a forbidden position, or uses a letter marked gray for that board.
- Use a third broad or bridging guess. If several boards remain mostly blank, continue testing new common letters. If one or more boards now have strong patterns, choose a word that both fits those constraints and probes a letter that could distinguish their remaining candidates.
- Rank the unresolved boards. Identify which board has the tightest pattern, which has the most plausible candidates, and which still needs the most new information. A nearly determined board may merit a solve attempt; a blank board usually benefits more from a word that supplies broad coverage.
- Switch from discovery to solving. Once a board has enough greens and yellows, construct candidate words that satisfy all of its constraints. If one candidate is strongly supported, play it. If several remain, prefer a candidate that also tests a useful letter on another unsolved board.
- Audit the budget before every late guess. Count the attempts already used, verify the word has not been played, and ask what information the guess will provide if it is not the answer. With only a few turns left, avoid speculative words that neither fit a board nor test a meaningful unresolved distinction.
Broad information gathering versus targeted solving
Neither mode is always superior. The useful question is which mode gives the best return for the current number of unresolved boards and remaining attempts.
| Decision factor | Broad information gathering | Targeted solving |
|---|---|---|
| Primary aim | Test many new, common letters across several boards. | Use known greens, yellows and grays to pursue a particular board. |
| Best timing | Usually the opening two or three guesses, or whenever feedback is sparse. | When a board has a constrained pattern or only one board remains. |
| Useful measurement | How many new letters and unresolved boards receive meaningful feedback. | How many candidate answers are eliminated while preserving a credible solve. |
| Main risk | Spending a turn on exploration after a board is ready to solve. | Ignoring three uncertain boards while chasing one plausible word too early. |
| Budget question | Will this word improve several boards at once? | Is the pattern strong enough that a solve attempt is worth the shared turn? |
These comparison criteria follow from the four-board, nine-attempt rules. They are decision tools, not published performance statistics, and no source establishes that one mode produces a particular win rate.
How to read and record green, yellow and gray clues
Green: lock the position
A green tile fixes both a letter and its position for that board. Write it into a five-character pattern, such as _ A _ _ E. Every later candidate for that board must preserve those positions. A green on another board does not impose the same requirement there unless that board independently produces it.
Yellow: keep the letter, move it
A yellow tile confirms that the letter belongs somewhere in that board’s answer but not in the position you just tried. Record both facts: the letter is required, and the tested position is forbidden. If later guesses produce additional yellow results for the same letter, maintain each board’s own list of positions that have been ruled out.
Gray: remove it only for that board
A gray tile means the game reports that letter as absent from that board’s answer. Add it to that board’s exclusion list. Do not erase the letter globally: the same character can be useful or even confirmed on another board.

The four keyboard quadrants provide a quick visual summary of the independent statuses. They are useful while scanning the screen, but a written record makes positional restrictions easier to review, especially when several yellow letters are involved. Before submitting a late guess, compare the word against both the board notes and the relevant keyboard quadrant.

Choosing a high-value guess
When several words are available, score them with three practical questions:
- Coverage: How many unresolved boards could receive useful feedback from this word?
- Novelty: How many letters have not yet been tested on those boards?
- Fit: Does the word respect every known green, yellow and gray constraint for the board you most need to address?
An early word can score high on coverage and novelty even if it is unlikely to be an answer for a particular board. A late word should score high on fit and may be worth playing even when it introduces few new letters. This avoids the common mistake of applying one fixed opening philosophy throughout the game.
Build complementary openings, not repeated openings
After the first word, inspect which of the commonly suggested letters remain untested. A second word containing several of those letters generally reveals more than another word built from the same set. If the first guess produced multiple greens or yellows, retain enough of those confirmed letters to learn their positions while still introducing new ones. By the third guess, the board feedback—not a memorized opener—should determine whether you continue broad coverage or begin solving.
Worked example: coordinating four different clue patterns
Consider an illustrative position after two guesses. It is not a prescribed answer set; it demonstrates how to reason from the rules.
| Board | Recorded state | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | _ A _ _ E; R is yellow in positions 1 and 3; several letters are gray. |
Look for a word that keeps A and E fixed, places R in an untested position, and does not use the board’s gray letters. |
| 2 | No greens; T and O are yellow; few grays. | Favor a coverage word that uses T and O in new positions while testing additional common letters. |
| 3 | S _ _ _ _; I is yellow; most of the remaining common vowels are untested. |
Choose a candidate beginning with S that relocates I and probes a remaining vowel. |
| 4 | _ _ L _ _; A and N are green or yellow in known positions; only two plausible patterns remain. |
Use a targeted candidate if it also gives a reasonable signal on Board 2; do not spend another purely exploratory word without a reason. |
The same submitted word can be a targeted candidate for Board 1, a broad probe for Board 2, a pattern test for Board 3 and a possible solve for Board 4. That mixed role is the defining advantage of Quordle’s shared guesses. After the result appears, update all four records again instead of assuming the word had one universal effect.
What to do when one board remains
When three answers are solved and one board is left, the strategic balance changes. The rules guidance says there is more freedom to guess specifically at that stage. Stop optimizing for coverage across solved boards and concentrate on the remaining pattern:

- Write the exact green pattern and every yellow placement restriction.
- Remove that board’s gray letters and all words already submitted.
- List the plausible candidates that satisfy every constraint.
- If two or more candidates remain, choose a valid word that distinguishes them or tests the most informative unresolved letter.
- Use a direct candidate answer when the evidence is strong enough; do not keep making broad guesses merely because that was correct earlier in the game.
The solved boards no longer need information, but their attempts have still consumed the same nine-guess budget. Check the counter before each final submission.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Treating the four boards as one puzzle
Symptom: You see a yellow or gray key and apply it to every board. Fix: Keep four separate records and consult the matching keyboard quadrant. A clue is valid only for the board that produced it.
Repeating letters too early
Symptom: The first several guesses test nearly the same alphabet. Fix: Compare your played-word list before choosing the next broad guess and favor untested common letters, unless a confirmed clue makes repetition necessary.
Chasing the easiest-looking board
Symptom: One board receives multiple narrow guesses while the other three remain blank. Fix: Ask whether the next word will reveal anything on the uncertain boards. Delay a single-board chase unless the pattern is strong or only that board remains.
Ignoring yellow-position restrictions
Symptom: A later word puts a yellow letter back in the same position. Fix: Record every tested position for each yellow letter and reject candidates that violate those exclusions.
Recommended Free Tools
Playing a plausible word without checking the budget
Symptom: A guess could fit, but it provides no useful information if wrong and leaves too few attempts for the other boards. Fix: Count used turns, identify the information the word would reveal on each unsolved board, and reserve speculative attempts for situations where the pattern justifies them.

Assuming a recommended opener is a guarantee
Symptom: You expect one memorized word sequence to solve every daily layout. Fix: Treat common-letter openings as a flexible information-gathering guideline. The available rules pages do not report a tested opener, comparative success rate or guaranteed method.
Troubleshooting branches for difficult positions
All four boards still look open after two guesses
Continue with a complementary coverage word rather than forcing a solve. Prioritize letters you have not tested, especially among the common letters named in the rules guidance. Make sure the third guess does not simply duplicate the first two unless a clue requires it.
One board has many clues but several candidates
Separate candidate generation from candidate selection. First enforce all green positions, yellow exclusions and gray letters. Then compare the remaining words by the information they would provide on other unresolved boards. A word that is a credible answer for the constrained board and a useful probe elsewhere can be better than a word that only looks familiar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA board appears contradictory
Recheck the board label and the exact row that produced each color. Contradictions often come from copying a clue from a neighboring board, forgetting a yellow-position restriction, or overlooking that a word has already been played. Reconstruct that board’s notes from the on-screen rows before spending another attempt.
You have very few attempts left
Stop exploratory guessing unless it separates a small number of candidates. Choose words that satisfy the strongest pattern and have a defensible chance of solving. The nine-attempt limit means a late guess must be judged by both its chance of being correct and the value of its feedback if it is not.
A compact checklist before every submission
- Which boards are still unsolved?
- What are the green positions, yellow letters and forbidden yellow positions for each one?
- Which letters are gray on each board, and have I kept those lists separate?
- Is this word valid, five letters long and not already played?
- How many new letters does it test?
- Will it help more than one unresolved board, or is a targeted solve now justified?
- How many of the nine total attempts remain after this submission?
What this strategy can—and cannot—promise
This method gives you a disciplined way to use shared guesses: broad coverage while uncertainty is high, independent bookkeeping throughout, and targeted solving when patterns become strong. It does not guarantee a win. The available game pages provide qualitative tips but no formal solver, tested opening sequence, benchmarked success rate or proof that a particular word order is optimal. Results also depend on the answer set and the exact implementation you are playing.
Use the game page for the described four-board mechanics and the rules page for the stated color meanings, valid-word requirement and strategic guidance. The practical standard is simple: every guess should either increase what you know about several boards or make a justified attempt to finish one, while all evidence remains tied to the board that produced it.
