In Classic Quordle, you solve four different five-letter words with the same guesses. You get nine submitted guesses, and every guess appears on each unsolved board. Green, yellow, and gray clues are calculated separately for each answer, so one letter can have a different color on every board. The current mode selector does not list a mode called Hard Mode, and the reviewed Quordle pages do not define hard-mode restrictions.

What the Classic Quordle rules are

The current Quordle game page describes Classic as finding four five-letter words within nine attempts. The four answers are hidden on separate boards, but your guesses are shared: when you submit one five-letter entry, the game evaluates it against every board that is still unsolved.

That shared-row design is the rule that distinguishes Quordle from a single-word puzzle. You do not receive nine guesses for each answer. You receive nine total submissions for the round, and each submission gives you up to four sets of feedback.

The word “Classic” matters. The current mode selector also lists Extreme, Chill, Sequence, Rescue, and Image. Their limits or mechanics can differ, so the nine-guess rule should not be applied automatically to every mode.

How one Quordle turn works

  1. Enter a five-letter word. The game accepts a five-letter guess in the shared input row.
  2. Submit it once. That single submission is sent to all four boards that remain in play and uses one of the nine Classic attempts.
  3. Read each board independently. The same guess can produce green, yellow, or gray tiles in different positions on different boards because each board has a different hidden answer.
  4. Carry the clues forward. For each board, note letters confirmed in place, letters present elsewhere, and letters ruled out for that board.
  5. Choose another shared guess. The next word has to help you make progress across the four separate clue sets. A letter that is useless on one board may still test an important possibility on another.
  6. Continue until the round ends. You win by solving all four answers before the nine Classic submissions are exhausted. If the attempts run out, the round ends even if one or more boards remain incomplete.

The game page summarizes the objective as “Find all four 5-letter words within 9 attempts.” That wording describes a shared attempt budget, not four independent budgets.

What the colors mean

The Quordle feedback colors have the same basic meanings as other tile-based word puzzles, but every color belongs to a particular board. The current game page and its FAQ explain the three possibilities.

Green: the letter and position are correct

A green tile means the guessed letter is in the answer and occupies that exact position. Treat it as a fixed constraint for that board. If the third tile of a guess turns green for one board, the third character of that board’s answer is known.

Yellow: the letter is in the answer, but elsewhere

A yellow tile means the answer contains that letter, but not in the position you just tried. Move the letter to a different position on a later guess. Yellow does not identify the correct position by itself, and a yellow result on one board says nothing about whether the same letter appears in any of the other three answers.

Gray: that letter is absent from this board’s answer

A gray tile means the letter is not in that board’s answer, according to the feedback for that guess. Do not read a gray result as a statement about all four words. The same letter could be gray on one board and green or yellow on another.

The page’s STARE example

The current game page uses STARE to illustrate the color meanings: it describes S as being in the word and in the correct spot, A as being in the word but in the wrong spot, and T, R, and E as not being in the word. This is an explanation of how feedback works, not a universal clue pattern for every round. Apply the interpretation separately to whichever answer board produced each color.

Why one guess can show four different patterns

Suppose a submitted word contains the letter A. One answer may place A in the same position you guessed, producing green. A second answer may contain A in another position, producing yellow. A third answer may not contain A at all, producing gray. The fourth board could produce any of those results as well. Nothing is inconsistent: the game is comparing the same guess with four different target words.

The keyboard follows the same board-specific logic. The FAQ at Quordle.game explains that each keyboard key is divided into four sections corresponding to the four boards. A key’s four sections can therefore show different colors at once. When you look at the keyboard, identify which section belongs to which board rather than treating the entire key as globally green, yellow, or gray.

How many guesses do you get?

Classic gives you nine total attempts to solve four five-letter words. Every submitted guess consumes one row across the shared game, whether it solves zero boards, one board, or several boards at once.

Does Quordle have a Hard Mode?

The current mode selector reviewed for this article does not show an option named Hard Mode. The current play-page rules and the selector also do not specify a set of hard-mode restrictions. That means you should not silently import the rules of another game’s Hard Mode and present them as Quordle rules.

If you are playing a particular website, archived version, community clone, or event variant that labels a setting “Hard Mode,” read that implementation’s own instructions. The evidence from the current Quordle pages supports only the narrower conclusion that the reviewed selector has no listed Hard Mode and that its restrictions are not defined there. It does not prove that no historical or third-party implementation has ever used that label.

A practical way to use the shared guesses

Quordle rewards keeping four clue records instead of one. You can do this mentally, on paper, or in a notes app; the game does not require a particular note-taking method.

Separate each board’s confirmed information

  • Record green letters with their exact positions.
  • Record yellow letters and the positions where they have already failed.
  • Record gray letters only for the board that returned gray.
  • Mark a board solved as soon as its answer is accepted so you stop spending attention on it.

This separation prevents the most damaging bookkeeping error: transferring a gray or yellow result from one answer to another. Four boards can use overlapping letters while imposing different position constraints.

Make each early guess informative

An early shared guess can test several common letters and positions at once. Its value comes from the information returned on all four boards, not just from whether it happens to solve one answer. After the colors appear, prefer a follow-up that checks unresolved possibilities while preserving greens and respecting yellows for the board you are trying to advance.

Balance conflicting board needs

A word that is ideal for one board may be a poor fit for another. Because the guess is shared, choose the next entry according to the boards that still have the greatest uncertainty. It is reasonable for a guess to be useful as a test on one board even when it cannot be the final answer on another, provided it gives you meaningful feedback before the attempt budget runs out.

Use solved boards as constraints on your attention, not as extra attempts

Solving one word does not create a separate pool of guesses for the remaining boards. The same nine Classic rows are still the limit. Once a board is complete, focus later entries on the unsolved boards and avoid repeating a word merely because it solved an earlier one.

Common Quordle mistakes and how to correct them

Counting nine guesses per word

Symptom: You plan nine attempts for each answer. Correction: Count the shared submitted rows. In Classic, the total is nine for the entire four-board round.

Treating gray as universal

Symptom: A gray letter is eliminated from every board. Correction: Remove it only from the board that returned gray. Check the other boards’ key sections and tile results separately.

Leaving a yellow letter in the same position

Symptom: You repeat a yellow letter at the position that already failed. Correction: Keep the letter in that board’s candidate set, but move it to an untested position.

Assuming matching colors must appear on every board

Symptom: You expect one guess to produce a consistent color pattern. Correction: Compare each tile pattern with its own hidden answer. Different patterns are the normal result of four independent targets.

Assuming the selector’s modes share one difficulty setting

Symptom: You start Extreme or Chill expecting Classic’s rules. Correction: Read the mode description first. The selector documents eight guesses and more unusual words for Extreme, and twelve guesses and fewer unusual words for Chill.

Assuming a Hard Mode rule set

Symptom: You believe every later guess must obey a familiar external hard-mode policy. Correction: The reviewed current Quordle pages do not define such a policy. Follow the instructions shown by the specific implementation you are using.

Daily, Practice, and version limits

The current play page presents Daily and Practice controls, while the mode selector describes a Daily Classic puzzle and additional modes. The retrieved rules do not establish the exact schedule for every mode or prove that every mode uses a daily answer. Treat the button labels as the available controls on that page, not as a universal promise about all Quordle versions.

The pages reviewed describe English-language browser play. They do not establish a geographic restriction, and they do not prove that archived, regional, or third-party implementations use identical dictionaries, schedules, limits, or color behavior.

A separate FAQ says that its version selects four random dictionary words for each round and allows unlimited rounds. That description applies to the implementation represented by that FAQ. It should not be generalized to every current Quordle mode, especially where the current play page separately offers Daily and Practice controls.

Where to verify the rules before playing

  • Use the current Quordle play page for the Classic objective, five-letter entries, shared boards, and color explanations.
  • Use the Quordle FAQ for the independent board feedback and four-section keyboard explanation.
  • Use the mode selector to check which modes are listed and whether their attempt or word-profile descriptions have changed.

For the rules covered here, the decisive habits are simple: count attempts across the whole Classic round, read every color against its own board, and keep the four clue sets separate. The current selector’s lack of a Hard Mode entry is a reason to check a specific variant’s instructions, not to borrow restrictions from another puzzle.
