The most direct phone replacement is a genuinely tiny e-reader such as the Xteink X4. Its appeal is not a faster processor or a larger library; it is that a pocket-sized, reading-only device gives you something to do with your hands without opening social feeds. The trade-off is important: the base X4 is reported to have no built-in backlight, and details of the backlit version’s touchscreen and proprietary charging port remain user-reported rather than confirmed by a current manufacturer specification.
Why a mini e-reader can interrupt doomscrolling
Doomscrolling is partly an environment problem. A phone puts news, social apps, video, games and books behind the same glass, so a pause to read can become an hour of feeds. A dedicated reader removes most of those competing choices. You pick up the device for a novel, and there is no browser waiting in the next swipe.
The Xteink X4 is the clearest fit for that use case because it is discussed specifically as a tiny, carry-anywhere e-reader. Its physical constraint is the feature: it is easy to keep in a pocket or bag, but too limited to become another general-purpose entertainment tablet.

This approach is different from a focus app. WIRED’s report on Focus Friend describes a timer that takes over the smartphone while an animated bean knits; uninterrupted sessions earn virtual socks and room decorations. The app briefly reached No. 2 on Google Play and No. 3 on the App Store on August 22, 2025. A mini e-reader changes the device you hold, while a focus app leaves the phone in your hand and attempts to restrict what you do on it.

Xteink X4: what you get and what to verify
Base model lighting
User discussion cited for the X4 says the base model has no backlight. That means it should be comfortable in daylight or beside a lamp, but it will not illuminate a dark room by itself. If you read in bed, on public transport at night or during a flight, budget for an external clip-on light unless the specific unit you buy is a backlit variant.
Backlit variant differences
The same discussion reports a backlit model with a touchscreen and a proprietary charging port. Treat those details as user reports: check the exact listing and seller documentation before ordering, because the interface and cable you receive may differ from the button-controlled base model. A proprietary connector also means you should keep a spare compatible cable rather than assume a standard USB-C lead will work.

Controls and reading feel
The practical question is whether you prefer physical buttons or touch input. Buttons let you turn pages without looking down and avoid accidental taps in a coat pocket. Touch is more familiar for menus and text selection but can make the device feel more like a phone. Confirm the control layout, screen lighting and dimensions for the exact revision; the available evidence establishes the pocketable concept, not a complete current specification sheet.
How the X4 compares with a cheap media player
A 4-inch TIMMKOO media player is an adjacent budget option, not a dedicated e-reader. Its indexed listing describes a touchscreen player with a built-in reading app and no browser access. That combination can block social feeds while still allowing offline books and music, but the experience is less focused: you are buying a small media device that happens to read ebooks rather than a reader designed around long sessions of text.

The media-player listing is a retailer mirror of an Amazon listing, so confirm the exact model number, storage, supported file types and software restrictions before paying. “No browser” does not necessarily mean no other distracting functions.
Buying checklist for a distraction-limited reader
- Choose your lighting. If you read after dark, select a confirmed backlit model or add a small reading light. Do not assume “e-reader” means front-lit.
- Check the controls. Decide whether page buttons or a touchscreen better suit one-handed reading and pocket carry.
- Confirm the connector. Identify USB-C versus a proprietary port and buy a spare cable when the connector is nonstandard.
- Verify book transfer. Look for the supported ebook formats and whether files move by USB, removable storage or a vendor application. These details are not established for the X4 evidence cited here.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include the reader, case, lighting for a non-backlit model and any required charging or storage accessories. Current prices and stock were not established, so check a live retailer listing immediately before purchase.
- Test your phone boundary. Keep social apps and notifications on the phone, not the reader, and load a small set of books before leaving home. The benefit comes from reducing choices, not from owning another gadget.
Can a tiny reader really stop doomscrolling?
It can remove an easy trigger, but it cannot build attention automatically. WIRED quotes developer Bria Sullivan describing phone use as feeling “against my will” and “kind of addicted to it.” Gloria Mark, a professor of informatics at UC Irvine, warns that continually outsourcing discipline to software prevents you from learning to direct attention yourself: “It’s really powerful to have the agency to be able to pay attention when you want to.”

Use the X4 as a deliberately narrow alternative: charge it, keep a book on it and reach for it when you would otherwise open a feed. If you still need the phone for work or messages, a timer app can add a separate boundary, but it is solving the problem while you remain in the same distraction-rich environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWho should buy which option?
Choose the mini e-reader when
- You want a device whose main job is reading novels.
- Pocket size and one-handed use matter more than multimedia features.
- You are willing to arrange lighting and charging around the exact model.
Choose the media player when
- The lowest possible cost is more important than a dedicated reading interface.
- You want offline audio or video alongside an ebook app.
- You have verified the model’s storage, formats and lack of browser access.
Use a phone focus app instead when
- You need timed work sessions, reminders or gamified motivation.
- You cannot carry a second device but can accept keeping the phone physically present.
The X4 is the strongest match for replacing phone scrolling because its small, purpose-specific form changes the physical choice in front of you. Buy only after confirming the revision’s lighting, controls and connector, and treat an external light and compatible cable as part of the real setup rather than optional afterthoughts.
