Quick Tap is Google’s double-tap shortcut for supported Pixel phones. It works on Pixel 4a (5G) and newer models, not on Android phones universally. If the option is missing, the usual cause is unsupported hardware or a manufacturer-specific gesture system—not a denied permission.
On a compatible Pixel, open Settings > System > Gestures > Quick tap, enable Use Quick tap, choose an action, and tap the back of the phone twice. If detection is inconsistent, remove accessories, clean the phone, install updates, restart, and test in safe mode before escalating.
What Quick Tap does—and which phones support it
Quick Tap recognizes two taps on the back of the phone and runs a shortcut you select. Google lists actions such as taking a screenshot, playing or pausing media, showing notifications, and opening an app. It is a Pixel feature rather than a standard Android capability.

Google’s documented hardware boundary is clear: Quick Tap works on Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones. A phone can run a recent Android release and still lack Quick Tap if it is not a supported Pixel. Android’s general help also notes that gesture settings vary by manufacturer, so menus and capabilities on other brands cannot be assumed to match Pixel.

Do this compatibility check before changing permissions or resetting settings. If the hardware is outside Google’s supported range, no permission change will create the missing menu.
Turn Quick Tap on and choose an action
When you have a supported Pixel, use this exact sequence:
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap Gestures.
- Tap Quick tap.
- Turn on Use Quick tap.
- Select the action you want Quick Tap to perform. Google lists screenshots, media play/pause, showing notifications, and opening an app among the available choices.
- Leave Settings and tap the back of the phone twice to test.
The switch and selected action are the two controls Google identifies for Quick Tap. The setup instructions do not require a separate accessibility grant, notification permission, or special app permission just to detect the gesture.
If the action is opening an app
Choose an installed app from the action picker. If the gesture is detected but only one app fails to open, treat that as an app-specific problem rather than a Quick Tap detection failure. Update that app and test again; if the problem remains isolated to that app, contact its developer.
How to test consistently
Use the same two-tap motion each time and wait for the selected result. Test more than once instead of judging the feature from a single tap. A result such as a screenshot or notification panel gives you a visible confirmation that the gesture was recognized.

When Quick Tap is missing from Settings
A missing Quick tap entry is usually a compatibility or interface issue. Start with the phone model, not permissions.
- Open Settings > About phone and identify the exact model.
- Compare it with Google’s supported boundary of Pixel 4a (5G) and later.
- If it is an older Pixel, Quick Tap is not documented as supported.
- If it is a non-Pixel Android phone, look for that manufacturer’s gesture or shortcut settings instead.
- If it is a supported Pixel and the menu is still absent, install pending system updates and restart before contacting Pixel support.
Android’s own help explains that gesture settings differ between manufacturers. Therefore, a search for a menu named “Quick tap” on a non-Pixel phone can produce a false diagnosis: the phone may have a comparable shortcut under a different name, or it may not offer a back-tap gesture at all.
Fix unreliable detection in the recommended order
If the menu exists and Quick Tap sometimes works or does nothing, use this sequence. It starts with reversible checks and avoids changing permissions that Google does not require.
1. Remove the case temporarily
Take off the protective case and repeat the test. A case can change how taps reach the phone or make the back surface harder to strike consistently. This is a diagnostic step, not a requirement to use Quick Tap permanently. If detection improves without the case, test the case again after confirming the gesture and consider whether its thickness or construction is the trigger.
2. Remove the screen protector temporarily
Google’s Pixel touch-response guidance recommends removing accessories while investigating touch problems. Although Quick Tap is a back-of-phone gesture, removing a screen protector helps separate an accessory-related response problem from a software or hardware problem. Retest with the protector removed, then reinstall it only after you know whether it changes behavior.

3. Clean the device
Clean the phone and try again. Dirt, moisture, or residue can make touch-related testing inconsistent. Use the cleaning method recommended for your Pixel and avoid introducing liquid into openings. The purpose of this step is simply to ensure that the phone is in a normal, unobstructed condition before you draw conclusions.
4. Install system updates
Check the phone’s system-update screen and install any pending update. Updates can contain fixes for gesture and touch behavior, and Google places updating among its standard Pixel troubleshooting checks. Keep the phone connected to power if an update requires it, allow the installation to finish, and test Quick Tap again afterward.
5. Restart the phone
Restart the Pixel, wait for startup to complete, and test the gesture before launching other apps. A restart clears a temporary software state without deleting your settings or data. If Quick Tap works immediately after restarting but later stops, note which apps or conditions precede the change; that observation is useful for the safe-mode test.
6. Test in safe mode
Use the Pixel’s standard safe-mode procedure to start the phone with downloaded apps disabled, then test Quick Tap. Google recommends safe mode when a touch problem may be caused by an installed app. The exact button sequence can vary by model and Android version, so use the safe-mode instructions shown for your Pixel rather than relying on a shortcut intended for another model.
Interpret the safe-mode result

Remove apps methodically rather than uninstalling many at once. Testing one change at a time preserves the evidence about which change affected the gesture.

Permissions: what Quick Tap does and does not need
Google’s Quick Tap setup instructions do not call for a special permission or accessibility grant. The documented requirements are supported Pixel hardware, the Use Quick tap switch enabled, and a selected action.
That means repeatedly granting accessibility access, notification access, or permissions to unrelated apps is not a documented fix for a missing Quick Tap menu. If the option is absent on a non-Pixel phone, treat it as a compatibility or manufacturer-interface issue first.
When a permission can still affect the chosen action
The gesture itself and the action it launches are separate. For example, an action that opens a particular app can be affected by that app’s own state or permissions. Diagnose those failures after confirming that another built-in action, such as showing notifications or taking a screenshot, responds to the same double tap.
Do not confuse Quick Tap with Motion Sense
Motion Sense is a separate Pixel 4 capability that detects nearby hand movements. It is not the back-tap gesture and its troubleshooting advice should not be applied automatically to Quick Tap.

Google’s Motion Sense guidance discusses issues such as Battery Saver or Airplane mode, country approval, toggling Motion Sense, restarting, and keeping the top of the phone unobstructed. Those conditions belong to Motion Sense. Quick Tap troubleshooting starts with the Quick tap menu, accessory removal, cleaning, updates, restart, and safe-mode testing.

Keeping the top of the phone clear or checking Motion Sense country availability will not make Quick Tap appear on an unsupported phone. First identify which feature you are trying to use and follow the instructions for that feature.

“I cannot find Quick tap anywhere”
- Check the exact model first.
- Confirm whether it is a Pixel 4a (5G) or later.
- On a non-Pixel phone, search the manufacturer’s gesture settings instead of expecting Google’s label.
- On a supported Pixel, update the system and restart; if the menu remains absent, escalate to Pixel support.
“The switch is on, but nothing happens”
- Verify that an action is selected.
- Remove the case and screen protector for a controlled test.
- Clean the device, install updates, and restart.
- Test in safe mode to check for an app conflict.
“It works only sometimes”
- Repeat the test with accessories removed.
- Use a consistent two-tap motion and confirm the selected action produces a visible result.
- Compare normal mode with safe mode.

“The screenshot works, but opening my app does not”
That pattern indicates the gesture may be detected correctly while the selected app action has a problem. Test another built-in action, update the affected app, and contact its developer if only that app continues to fail.
What not to change while troubleshooting
- Do not treat Motion Sense settings as Quick Tap settings.
- Do not assume a missing menu is caused by a blocked permission.
- Do not factory-reset the phone as an early step; the documented sequence begins with compatibility, accessories, cleaning, updates, restart, and safe mode.
- Do not conclude that all Android phones support back tap because one Pixel does.
- Do not remove every app at once; isolate a possible conflict by changing one variable at a time.
When to contact support or arrange repair
Escalate after you have confirmed a supported Pixel, enabled Quick Tap, selected an action, installed available system updates, restarted, removed accessories, cleaned the device, and tested safe mode. At that point, use Google Pixel support or an authorized repair route.
Describe the exact model, Android version if shown in Settings, whether the Quick tap menu is present, the action selected, and what happened in normal mode versus safe mode. Also report whether removing the case or screen protector changed detection. These details help support distinguish a configuration issue from a broader touch or hardware problem.
The available Google guidance does not identify a Quick Tap-specific replacement part or required accessory. Avoid buying a special case, sensor, or repair tool on the assumption that one is required.

Permissions are not the normal explanation for a missing Quick Tap option.
