A renewal deadline is not one universal timer. It can mark when a queue message becomes visible again, when a queue service sends repeated failures to a dead-letter queue, or when a database worker loses a persisted claim. Those clocks have different effects: expiration may let another worker start, but it does not stop the first worker. Systems must therefore expect overlapping attempts and protect writes and external effects against duplicates.

Which deadline is expiring?

Start by identifying the piece of state governed by the deadline. A queue delivery lease, a redrive threshold, a message-retention window, and a database transaction retry are separate mechanisms. They may interact in one workflow, but one does not automatically renew, reset, or enforce the others.

  • Visibility or lease deadline: controls how long a received queue message is hidden from other consumers, or how long a persisted database claim remains valid.
  • Retry or redrive threshold: controls when repeated delivery failures qualify for a different handling path, such as a dead-letter queue (DLQ).
  • Retention window: controls how long a message or event remains available for processing, investigation, or replay.
  • Transaction retry: reruns database work after a concurrency failure; it does not extend a queue lease or restore an expired claim.

When diagnosing a missed deadline, ask which state changed, which clock decided it, and what operation the system permits next.

What happens when a queue visibility timeout expires?

A visibility timeout is a temporary delivery lease. After a consumer receives a message, the queue hides it from other consumers for the timeout period. If the consumer does not delete it or extend its invisibility, the message can become available for delivery again. Expiry means another attempt may begin; it does not establish that the earlier consumer stopped.

Renewal buys time, not exclusive ownership forever

A consumer processing a message longer than its current visibility period can extend visibility where the queue service supports that operation. The timeout should cover expected processing time, or be renewed with enough margin to tolerate ordinary delays. A crash, long pause, network partition, or failed renewal can still leave the message available while the original worker is active.

For Amazon SQS specifically, current developer documentation accessed in 2026 gives a 30-second default visibility timeout and a configurable maximum of 12 hours. These are SQS product limits, not general queue-system defaults. Set values using the actual service, workload, and processing-time distribution.

Design for overlapping attempts

Do not treat receipt as proof that a worker is the only processor. If an earlier attempt continues after visibility expires, a later consumer may perform the same work. Make processing idempotent where possible: repeating the same logical operation should not create an additional charge, duplicate record, or second notification. For state changes, validate that the attempt still owns the current claim before committing. For external requests, use the destination’s idempotency mechanism when available; a database check cannot retract a request already sent.

How does queue redrive differ from lease renewal?

Redrive is a policy for messages that have been received repeatedly without successful completion; it is not the mechanism that renews a message’s visibility. In SQS, the source queue’s redrive policy identifies a target DLQ and sets maxReceiveCount. SQS documentation describes messages moving after their receive count exceeds that threshold. Choose the threshold to allow the intended number of attempts, accounting for the service’s receive-count behavior rather than assuming a universal retry count.

SQS also documents a standard-queue nuance: when maxReceiveCount is greater than 3, a message received three or more times without deletion is moved to the back of the queue. This can affect how queue-age metrics are interpreted. It is a service-specific behavior, not a general property of queues.

A DLQ changes the workflow

A DLQ gives operators a place to inspect or replay messages that did not complete under the source queue’s policy. It does not prove that the failure is transient, nor does it guarantee that replay is safe without checking side effects and current data. For FIFO workflows, SQS warns that moving a failed earlier operation aside can let later operations proceed without it. If order is essential, account for the consequences of that gap before enabling DLQ movement.

Retention determines whether recovery is still possible

SQS documents a maximum message-retention period of 14 days. For standard queues, a message’s expiration remains based on its original enqueue timestamp after transfer to a DLQ; for FIFO queues, the enqueue timestamp resets on transfer. SQS recommends setting DLQ retention longer than source-queue retention when investigation time matters. Confirm the queue type and retention configuration before relying on a DLQ as a recovery archive.

How do service-level retries differ from queue redrive?

A service that invokes a target can maintain its own retry policy and failure destination. That policy is distinct from a queue’s receive count and DLQ redrive rules. For example, Amazon EventBridge documents a default of 5 attempts or 300 seconds, whichever limit is reached first, for failed target invocations. It may send failures to a configured on-failure destination. The number is an EventBridge default documented in 2026, not a universal retry budget.

EventBridge’s recovery path also differs from SQS message redrive: its documentation describes replaying events from the event bus and requires that the events still be within bus retention. SNS is another distinct case: delivery retry behavior is tied to subscription endpoints, varies for client-side and server-side errors, and a subscription can have an SQS DLQ. Do not transfer retry counts or failure semantics from one service to another without checking that service’s policy.

What does a database polling retry actually retry?

A polling worker often reads for eligible work, claims a row, and processes it. The claim operation and the longer-running work are not necessarily the same transaction. A short database transaction can coordinate which worker claims a row while that transaction is open; after commit, a row lock no longer serves as a long-lived ownership lease. If processing continues beyond the transaction, persist claim identity and expiry state so the application can determine whether the claim is still valid.

Retry the whole transaction after a serialization failure

PostgreSQL’s official guidance says: “Therefore, PostgreSQL does not offer an automatic retry facility, since it cannot do so with any guarantee of correctness.” When a serialization failure requires a retry, rerun the complete transaction, including the application logic that decides what SQL to issue and which values to use. Retrying only the statement that reported an error can be incorrect because the decision may have depended on earlier reads that no longer reflect current state.

This transaction-level retry is separate from polling again for work. It is also separate from a queue service retrying delivery. Define which errors are safe to retry, bound retry attempts or time, and let permanent data or configuration errors follow an explicit failure path rather than looping indefinitely.

Persisted claims need explicit expiry handling

If ownership must survive past the claim transaction, store enough information to identify the claim holder and its deadline. On completion, compare the current claim identity or generation with the one held by the worker; reject a stale completion if another worker has taken over. Expiry makes work eligible for another attempt, but it does not cancel the original worker’s code.

The pg_lease semantics specification describes expiry using database server time, a lapsed-lease state, and epochs for detecting stale holders. It is an implementation-specific specification, not built-in PostgreSQL lease behavior. Its stated guarantees for blocking acquisition assume READ COMMITTED; transaction isolation affects what a waiting transaction can see. Check the actual library or application behavior rather than assuming those semantics apply to every database-backed queue.

Why is lease expiry a concurrency boundary?

Once a lease lapses, a second worker may claim the same unit while the original worker is still running. The important race is not just “who got the row first?” but “can an old holder still commit after a newer holder takes over?” A deadline alone cannot answer that.

Use a generation or fencing check for state updates

Each successful claim can carry a monotonically advancing generation or another unique ownership token. A state update should be accepted only when its token matches the current claim. That prevents an old worker from overwriting newer database state after losing ownership. The exact token design and atomic update mechanism depend on the application and database.

Protect effects outside the database too

Fencing a database write cannot undo an email, payment request, or other external action already issued by a stale worker. Use idempotency keys or another duplicate-safe protocol at the external boundary, and record enough progress to reconcile uncertain outcomes. Treat a timeout on an external request as an unknown result unless the destination can confirm whether it took effect.

How to compare retry and renewal behavior

Before combining a queue, polling table, or lease library, document the behavior at each boundary. The table separates what is established for the named examples from details that depend on configuration or implementation.

Mechanism What its deadline or threshold controls Retry and recovery behavior What to verify
Amazon SQS visibility and redrive Visibility controls temporary message invisibility; redrive uses the source queue’s maxReceiveCount and DLQ policy. An un-deleted message can be delivered again after visibility ends; it moves according to redrive policy. Retention affects how long recovery remains possible. Queue type, visibility renewal behavior, receive-count threshold, retention, DLQ ordering effects, and idempotency.
Amazon EventBridge target retry Retry policy limits failed target invocations by attempts or event age. Documented default: 5 attempts or 300 seconds, whichever limit is reached first; a configured on-failure destination and event-bus replay are separate from SQS redrive. Configured retry limits, failure destination, bus retention, and whether the event remains eligible for replay.
PostgreSQL transaction retry A concurrency error may require rerunning a complete transaction; PostgreSQL does not automatically retry it. The application reruns the transaction and its decision logic; no queue-style receive threshold or DLQ is established by this behavior. Retryable error classes, transaction boundaries, isolation behavior, and whether the full decision process is repeated.
Database-backed lease, such as the pg_lease specification Persisted lease expiry determines when ownership is lapsed and may be reacquired under that implementation. The specification describes database-server-time expiry and epochs for stale-holder detection; these are not universal database semantics. Clock source, expiry equality, acquisition visibility, renewal operation, generation checks, retry accounting, and isolation assumptions.

For any system, establish the clock source, exact expiry boundary, renewal operation, what a missed renewal does, whether expiry consumes retry budget, how stale holders are prevented from committing, whether later work can overtake failed work, and how long recovery data remains available. Also classify failures: transient failures may warrant retry, while invalid configuration or permanently bad input generally needs a different path.

What should a safe worker do at a deadline?

  1. Before processing: acquire or receive work using the system’s defined claim protocol, then record the claim identity or generation needed to validate ownership later.
  2. During long work: renew the queue visibility or persisted lease with margin where supported. Treat renewal failure or an uncertain response as possible loss of ownership; do not assume the old claim remains exclusive.
  3. Before committing: verify that the claim is still current. Apply database state changes conditionally on the current claim identity or generation.
  4. For side effects: use idempotency or reconciliation at the external service boundary. A database transaction cannot make an already-issued external request atomic.
  5. After a retryable database concurrency error: restart the complete transaction and its application decision logic, rather than repeating only the failed statement.
  6. At the retry limit: send the failure through the configured recovery path, then preserve enough retention and context for investigation or safe replay.
