Tell your oncology team about every supplement, herb, vitamin, tea, powder, or proposed unapproved drug before you start it—even if you have already bought it or only plan to try it. Bring the exact label and ask the team to check the product against your cancer, medicines, treatment schedule, and health history. Do not substitute an online claim or a general interaction list for that patient-specific review.
Why a product review belongs before the first dose
Products sold as “natural,” dietary, or alternative can change how cancer medicines work. An ingredient may alter absorption in the gut, metabolism in the liver, transport through the body, or removal through the kidneys or other pathways. That can raise or lower exposure to a cancer medicine, change its effects, or add toxicity. NCI discusses possible interactions involving St. John’s wort, grapefruit, and constituents of green tea, while also noting that evidence is limited for many specific combinations. The relevant question is never simply whether an ingredient is generally safe; it is whether this formulation, dose, timing, and treatment combination is appropriate for you.
The National Cancer Institute’s patient guidance is direct: “Talk to your doctor about the CAM products you use before you begin treatment.” That includes products you already take, products you stopped recently, and products you are considering but have not yet purchased. A treatment list that omits a tea, topical preparation, injection, powder, or occasional remedy can leave the team with an incomplete picture.
About 36% of adults with cancer in the United States use some form of complementary and alternative medicine, according to the National Cancer Institute’s professional PDQ updated in 2024. The estimate describes use, not safety, effectiveness, or approval, and it is not a worldwide rate.

Questions to ask at the appointment
Take the product container or a clear image of its complete label and ask these questions using the exact product name.
Could it change my treatment exposure?
Ask: “Could this product change how my cancer treatment is absorbed, metabolized, transported, or removed?” Include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, radiation-related medicines, anti-nausea drugs, steroids, anticoagulants, pain medicines, and any medicines taken only as needed. The answer can depend on the product’s plant species, extract strength, inactive ingredients, route, and timing relative to each dose.
What benefit is actually supported?
Ask: “What benefit is supported for the reason I want to take it, and what remains uncertain?” Separate a laboratory finding, an early clinical study, a symptom claim, and evidence for a specific cancer outcome. NCI states that no food, vitamin, mineral, dietary supplement, herb, or combination has been proven to slow cancer, cure it, or prevent recurrence. Some products are being studied for treatment side effects, but research interest is not proof that a product helps you or is safe with your regimen.

Which harms should I watch for?
Ask: “What side effects or interactions should I watch for, including with my other medicines?” Request concrete symptoms, the time window in which they matter, and the number to call. A supplement can cause its own adverse effects, amplify a prescription medicine, affect bleeding or blood pressure, or make a treatment toxicity harder to recognize. Tell the team about allergies, kidney or liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding, upcoming surgery, and prior reactions.

What should I do if I use it?
Ask: “Should I avoid it, start it, pause it, or have monitoring if I use it?” The oncology team must make that recommendation for the exact regimen. There is no universal safe interval, dose, or “natural” exception that applies to every patient. Do not stop, delay, or alter prescribed cancer treatment on your own; direct any treatment-change question to the clinicians managing it.
Is this part of a legitimate clinical trial?
Ask: “Is this use part of a clinical trial? If so, who sponsors the trial, and what does participation involve?” Clarify eligibility, visits, tests, randomization, possible placebo use, costs, privacy, reporting of side effects, and how the study coordinates with your current treatment. A product sold online is not a clinical trial merely because its advertisement uses scientific language.
Is a cancer-treatment claim legally and scientifically supported?
Ask: “Is this product an FDA-approved drug for this specific use, or is it an unapproved product? What evidence supports the claim?” Approval status is tied to an intended use; a product approved for one condition is not automatically approved for cancer or for your cancer type. Ask to see the evidence rather than relying on testimonials, endorsements, marketplace ratings, or a claim that the product is “doctor formulated.”

Can I get evidence-based supportive care?
Ask: “Is there an evidence-based supportive-care option or an integrative oncology consultation at this cancer center?” NCI reports that integrative oncology consultations are available in a number of care settings, but not every center offers them. Your team can help address pain, nausea, sleep, anxiety, nutrition, fatigue, and other goals without presenting an unproven product as a cancer treatment.

A compact question checklist
- What side effects can be expected?
- What are the risks related to this therapy or product?
- What benefits can be expected, and for which outcome?
- Will it affect conventional treatment?
- Is this therapy part of a clinical trial?
- What monitoring, dose changes, or follow-up would be needed?
- Does my insurance cover a safer supportive-care alternative or an integrative consultation?
These questions reflect the National Cancer Institute’s patient PDQ. Write down the answers, the clinician’s name, and instructions for what to do if symptoms occur.
Prepare the product information your team needs
Bring the original container whenever possible. If that is impractical, bring clear images of the front, Supplement Facts or Drug Facts panel, ingredient list, warnings, directions, lot information, and manufacturer. A product name alone may not identify the concentration or extract used.
Record the proposed use
- Full product name and every listed ingredient, including blends with no amounts disclosed.
- Form: capsule, tablet, extract, tea, powder, liquid, topical product, or another preparation.
- Amount per serving, intended servings per day, and the date you started or plan to start.
- When it would be taken in relation to infusions, radiation, oral cancer medicine, meals, and other doses.
- The reason you are considering it, such as nausea, fatigue, sleep, pain, appetite, or a claim about tumor control.
Bring the complete medication inventory
List every prescription and over-the-counter medicine, vitamin, herb, mineral, sports or nutrition product, cannabis preparation where legal, and occasional remedy. Include medicines prescribed by another clinician and products you discontinued recently. Record allergies, kidney or liver problems, and scheduled procedures. An optional paper notebook can keep this list in one place for the appointment; it is an organizational aid, not a safety checker and not an endorsement of any product.

In the United States, dietary supplements and drugs follow different regulatory paths. NCI’s professional PDQ explains that supplements generally do not undergo the same premarket evaluation and approval as drugs, although manufacturing and labeling requirements apply. It is inaccurate to say that the FDA does not regulate supplements; the protections and review requirements differ from those for an approved drug.

A product marketed with claims to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent disease may be treated as a drug. FDA explains that an unapproved drug has not been reviewed for the intended use and may not meet modern standards for safety, effectiveness, quality, or labeling. A supplement’s label, manufacturing controls, and legal sale therefore do not establish that it treats cancer or is compatible with a particular regimen.
| Question | Dietary supplement | FDA-approved drug | Unapproved cancer-claim product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premarket review for the claimed use | Generally not required in the same way as for drugs | Required for the approved indication before marketing | Has not received FDA review for its intended use |
| What the label establishes | Identity, ingredients, directions, and required labeling claims; not proof of cancer treatment | Evidence and labeling for a defined approved use | May have incomplete, inaccurate, or misleading labeling |
| Evidence needed for your decision | Product- and drug-specific clinical evidence and oncology review | Whether the approved indication and regimen fit your situation | Reliable evidence, legal status, quality, and risk of delaying effective care must be questioned |
| Key concern | Interaction, contamination, variable formulation, or unsupported benefit | Known risks still require individual prescribing judgment | Unknown quality or safety and possible interference with proven treatment |
FDA approval does not mean a drug is suitable for every patient, dose, combination, or purpose. It means the agency reviewed evidence for specified intended uses. Your oncology team still has to weigh that information against your diagnosis, other illnesses, medicines, treatment goals, and preferences.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recognize claims that should stop an online purchase
Be especially cautious when an advertisement promises a cure, an alternative to approved treatment, no side effects, or one remedy for every cancer. FDA says illegally marketed cancer products are often promoted online or through social media, may contain dangerous ingredients, and can delay or interfere with beneficial treatment. A product’s presence on a marketplace, a large number of testimonials, or a professional-looking website does not demonstrate safety or effectiveness.
FDA’s consumer safety officer Nicole Kornspan described the pressure behind these offers: “There can be a great temptation to jump at anything that appears to offer a chance for a cure.” Treat that temptation as a reason to pause and show the exact offer to a licensed clinician, not as a reason to test the product privately.

FDA’s “Illegally Sold Cancer Treatments” overview, retrieved October 13, 2026, reported 18 warning letters and four online advisory letters concerning more than 80 products claiming to prevent, diagnose, treat, mitigate, or cure cancer. Enforcement totals can change, so the figure is a snapshot of that page rather than a permanent count.
- “Cures all cancers” or works regardless of cancer type.
- Promises to replace surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, or prescribed medicines.
- Claims of zero side effects or safety for everyone.
- Instructions to hide use from your oncologist or to ignore “negative” medical advice.
- Testimonials offered instead of controlled evidence for the product and intended use.
- Urgent countdowns, secret formulas, or instructions to buy before consulting a clinician.
If you have already started the product
- Do not make a medication or cancer-treatment change on your own.
- Contact the oncology team and state the exact product, amount, start date, last dose, and reason for use.
- Send clear label images and your complete medication list.
- Report new or worsening symptoms promptly, following the team’s after-hours instructions for urgent problems.
- Ask whether any blood tests, examination, scheduling change, or specialist review is needed.
- Keep the container until the team has documented the ingredients and given instructions.
If the product was promoted as a cure or alternative treatment, show the advertisement as well as the container. Marketing language can reveal claims that are absent from the label and help the team assess the risk of delayed care.
What this process can and cannot establish
A careful appointment can identify a plausible interaction, an avoidable duplicate ingredient, a monitoring plan, or a better-supported way to manage a symptom. It cannot turn an unproven product into a proven cancer therapy. NCI’s interaction summaries acknowledge limited evidence for many combinations, and the available sources do not provide one statistic for the chance that any particular supplement will interact with any particular patient’s regimen. The answer must be individualized using the actual product and treatment details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the visit to make an informed decision with the clinicians who know your cancer and medicines. The safest default is disclosure before the first dose, precise product information, and no change to prescribed treatment without the oncology team’s direction.
