Before buying shares in a highly leveraged AI company, determine whether its recurring cash generation can cover interest, maturities, leases and the capital required to keep its data-center assets competitive. Then test the share count, refinancing access, customer concentration and asset returns in a downside case. Strong AI demand by itself does not answer any of those questions.
This is a due-diligence framework, not a buy or sell recommendation. Use the issuer’s latest Form 10-K, Form 10-Q, debt agreements, earnings release and proxy statement, because balances, maturities, commitments and dilution can change every reporting period.
Start with a precise leverage snapshot
“Highly leveraged” is not a universal debt-to-revenue threshold. It describes obligations that are large relative to the cash the business can reliably generate and the assets it could liquidate. Two AI companies with the same debt balance can have very different risks if one has contracted, high-margin cash flow and the other must continually borrow to fund GPUs, power and construction.

- Gross debt: principal outstanding on term loans, notes, revolvers, equipment financing and convertible debt.
- Cash and liquidity: unrestricted cash, short-term investments and undrawn committed revolver capacity. Exclude restricted cash and cash trapped in subsidiaries unless it is legally available to the parent.
- Net debt: gross debt less usable cash. Show gross and net figures separately so a large cash balance cannot conceal near-term maturities or restricted funds.
- Leases and data-center commitments: finance leases, operating leases, take-or-pay power contracts, colocation commitments and construction obligations. These may not appear as conventional debt but still require cash.
- Security and priority: identify secured versus unsecured borrowings, collateral, guarantees and debt that ranks ahead of common shareholders.
- Maturities: list principal due by quarter and year, including mandatory amortization, puts and repurchases of convertible notes.
- Interest exposure: separate fixed-rate and floating-rate debt, spread adjustments, hedges and interest-rate reset dates.
- Coverage: calculate interest coverage and fixed-charge coverage using operating cash flow and, separately, EBITDA. Reconcile both to GAAP cash flow; EBITDA is not cash available for principal, taxes or maintenance capex.
Compare obligations with recurring operating cash flow, not with a management forecast alone. A company can show rapid revenue growth while its cash deficit widens because every new customer requires more servers and power.
1. Can operating cash cover interest, principal and required AI capex?
Reconcile the cash-flow statement to the capital structure for the same period. Start with cash flow from operations, then deduct cash interest, mandatory principal payments, taxes, maintenance capital expenditure and contractual commitments. Add back only financing sources that are already committed, such as a signed revolver or customer prepayment with enforceable terms.
Separate maintenance spending from expansion
Ask management to identify the spending needed to keep existing capacity usable and the spending intended to add capacity. GPU replacement, networking, cooling and power upgrades can be maintenance even when management labels the entire program “growth.” A business that cannot fund maintenance without new borrowing has a more fragile balance sheet than one whose external financing is limited to optional expansion.

Usage-based AI contracts may produce an accounting receivable before the customer pays. Model slower collections, larger deposits to suppliers and inventory bought ahead of demand. Customer prepayments can help finance construction, but they are not free cash: the company must deliver the contracted service and may owe refunds or credits if capacity is unavailable.
Use disclosed warnings as a reality check
Applied Digital Corporation (identified in its 2026 Form 10-Q as AgPUs in the risk disclosure) says planned expenditures may require customer prepayments, operating cash, new equity or new debt, and warns that financing may not be available on favorable terms. Treat that type of language as evidence that growth is financing-dependent, not as proof that the expansion will be funded.
The International Monetary Fund estimated $3.4 trillion in AI-related capital expenditure through 2029 in 2026 and reported more than $100 billion in hyperscaler bond financing since January 2025. Those industry-wide figures make utilization, pricing, power and return on invested capital more important than a demand narrative.
2. How much liquidity runway remains in a downside case?
Calculate runway from unrestricted cash plus committed, undrawn credit. Subtract a conservative operating burn, maintenance capex, interest, mandatory amortization and contractual payments. Do not count an uncommitted equity offering or a hoped-for refinancing as liquidity.

Build three cash cases
- Base case: use management’s forecast only after reconciling revenue, margins, capex and collections to historical results.
- Operating downside: reduce utilization and pricing, delay customer payments, increase power costs and preserve payroll and maintenance spending.
- Financing stress: assume a maturity cannot be rolled, interest rates rise and any equity raise occurs at a materially lower share price.
For each case, identify the month in which cash falls below a practical minimum, not merely the date it reaches zero. A company may breach a minimum-liquidity covenant or lose supplier confidence well before insolvency.
Multi-year losses show why revenue growth is not a liquidity answer. C3.ai reported net losses of approximately $288.7 million in fiscal 2025, $279.7 million in fiscal 2024 and $268.8 million in fiscal 2023. Those figures do not predict another issuer’s losses, but they demonstrate why a buyer must connect growth plans to cash generation.
3. What refinancing or covenant event could break the thesis?
Make a maturity wall listing every note, loan, lease and construction obligation by date. For each instrument, record principal, interest rate, amortization, collateral, financial covenants, minimum-liquidity tests, mandatory prepayments, change-of-control provisions and the consequences of default.
Examine refinancing dependence
Ask whether the company has enough cash to repay each maturity without issuing shares or selling assets. Then examine the market conditions required to refinance: profitability, asset values, lender concentration and interest rates. A lender can refuse to roll debt even when the company is current on payments.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Veritone’s 2026 annual report states that if it cannot or does not refinance its convertible notes before maturity, repaying or repurchasing them may require significant cash in 2026 and operating cash flow may be insufficient. For any issuer, a warning like this means the maturity date belongs in the investment thesis, not in a footnote.
Model covenant headroom
Recalculate leverage and fixed-charge ratios under lower EBITDA, higher interest and delayed receivables. Check whether unrestricted cash is excluded from a covenant calculation, whether a breach triggers cross-defaults and whether lenders can sweep cash or demand additional collateral. Read amendment agreements; a covenant holiday can defer a problem while increasing interest or fees.
4. What is the fully diluted share count?
Use the treasury-stock method only as a starting point. Add in-the-money options, restricted stock units, warrants, preferred securities, convertible notes, at-the-market programs and equity that management may need to fund committed capex. Read conversion prices, settlement choices, anti-dilution clauses and the number of authorized but unissued shares.

Measure dilution under financing stress
Calculate ownership per share in the current case, a base financing case and a distressed case. In the distressed case, assume the share price falls, so more shares are issued for the same cash. Include shares issued to lenders, suppliers or strategic customers if those instruments can settle in equity.
Applied Digital’s risk disclosure says additional equity or convertible securities may substantially dilute existing stockholders and may carry rights senior to common stock. Cerebras likewise warns that additional equity or convertible debt could cause significant dilution. These are structural risks of financing an asset-heavy AI business, not a reason to use an unadjusted basic share count.
5. Will the AI infrastructure earn an adequate return before it ages out?
For each data-center or GPU project, compare contracted utilization and price with the full cost of ownership. Include GPU depreciation, power, networking, cooling, maintenance, data-center rent, insurance, personnel and financing. Calculate return on invested capital using cash operating profit after maintenance capex, not revenue or a promotional gross margin.
Check the contract behind the utilization number
Separate committed take-or-pay capacity from reserved but cancellable capacity, usage-based forecasts and an uncontracted pipeline. Confirm contract term, renewal rights, minimum payments, customer credit quality and termination provisions. A high utilization percentage can conceal low prices or a short contract that expires before the financing does.
Stress technology and resale risk
Model a faster replacement cycle, lower resale value for older GPUs, higher power prices and a period when new capacity enters the market at lower prices. Debt repayment is fixed while the economic life and rental rate of equipment can fall quickly. Compare the remaining debt principal with the conservative resale value of the financed assets.

The IMF’s $3.4 trillion AI-capital-expenditure estimate through 2029 implies substantial future supply. Investors should therefore demand evidence of customer commitments and sustainable returns rather than extrapolating today’s scarcity pricing.
6. Is demand durable or dependent on optimistic forecasts?
Divide the revenue outlook into signed contracts, recurring renewals, customer budgets approved but not contracted, usage assumptions and management’s total-addressable-market estimate. Only the first categories provide evidence of near-term cash, and even signed contracts must be tested for termination and collection risk.

Check the quality of revenue
- Review renewal rates, churn, expansion revenue and the share of revenue from usage-based pricing.
- Compare gross margin by product and customer; low-margin resale or cloud capacity can inflate revenue without creating equity value.
- Identify customer concentration, cancellation rights, service-level credits and dependence on one application or model family.
- Compare bookings and backlog conversion with prior guidance. Repeatedly delayed deployments weaken the reliability of the forecast.
C3.ai identifies reduced demand, competition, market contraction and inability to forecast demand as risks. For any company, treat those disclosures as prompts to test the forecast against a slower adoption curve and lower price per compute hour.
7. Could customer or supplier concentration turn an operating problem into a liquidity event?
Read the customer-concentration note and accounts-receivable aging, not just the revenue table. Determine how much cash is owed by the largest customers, how long it has been outstanding and whether one customer can terminate enough capacity to breach a debt covenant.
Cerebras disclosed that one customer represented 77.9% of accounts receivable at December 31, 2025. That figure is a company-specific disclosure, not a benchmark, but it shows why receivable concentration can matter even when reported revenue is diversified.
For infrastructure operators, map dependence on GPU and networking suppliers, power providers, data-center landlords, construction contractors and hyperscaler customers. IREN identifies dependence on a small number of equipment suppliers as a material risk. Check lead times, substitute suppliers, deposits, warranty terms and whether a supplier can demand cash on delivery after a credit downgrade.
8. Are contingent and interconnected obligations larger than reported debt?
Search the filings and agreements for guarantees, special-purpose entities, supplier financing, customer prepayments, related-party arrangements, take-or-pay contracts and long-term leases. The IMF notes that AI financing can include leveraged loans and intercorporate arrangements; economic leverage can therefore exceed the debt line on the consolidated balance sheet.
Trace obligations through subsidiaries
Identify which subsidiary owns the GPUs, which entity signs customer contracts and where cash is held. A parent guarantee may expose shareholders to a subsidiary’s debt, while cash at a project entity may not be available for parent-level notes. Check non-controlling interests and restrictions on upstreaming dividends.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReview commitments after the reporting date
Read subsequent-event notes, purchase commitments and announced data-center projects. A project announced after quarter-end can create a large future cash requirement before it appears in debt or capex history.

9. Does management disclose measurable milestones and downside actions?
Prefer targets tied to utilization, backlog conversion, gross margin, free cash flow, leverage and return on invested capital. Reconcile non-GAAP measures to GAAP and ask what costs are excluded, especially stock compensation, restructuring, power, depreciation and recurring implementation expenses.
Compare current guidance with prior guidance and actual results. A credible plan explains what management will cut, delay or renegotiate if utilization misses target. Vague statements about “AI demand” are not a substitute for customer commitments when the filing also shows losses, financing dependence or refinancing exposure.
Read governance and disclosure quality as a risk variable. Look for clear maturity tables, prompt covenant disclosures, consistent definitions and discussion of failed milestones. Obscure language does not reduce the obligation; it increases the work required to price it.

10. What does a bear-case valuation imply?
Build a valuation that changes operating and financing assumptions together. At minimum, vary utilization, price per unit, gross margin, capex, power costs, interest rates, refinancing access, dilution and terminal growth.
Use an explicit scenario table
| Assumption | Bull case | Base case | Bear case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utilization | Higher than contracted baseline with timely deployment | Contracted utilization converts as scheduled | Deployment delays and customer cancellations |
| Pricing | Scarcity supports current pricing | Prices normalize gradually | New supply forces lower prices |
| Capital expenditure | Expansion funded by operating cash and committed prepayments | Planned spending requires some external financing | Maintenance remains mandatory while expansion financing closes |
| Financing | Maturities refinance on acceptable terms | Refinancing costs rise but remains available | Debt cannot be rolled and equity is issued at a depressed price |
| Share count | Limited incremental issuance | Expected options and planned financing included | Convertible, warrant and rescue-financing dilution included |
Do not assign a precise fair value when the issuer’s cash flows, maturity schedule or fully diluted count are uncertain. The purpose of the bear case is to reveal how quickly equity value can disappear when interest and capital costs grow faster than revenue.
How to compare two leveraged AI companies
Use the same definitions and reporting dates for both issuers. A comparison is only useful when one company’s “adjusted debt” is not being compared with another’s gross debt.
| Comparison axis | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Net leverage and maturity wall | Gross debt, usable cash, lease liabilities, maturities by year and mandatory amortization |
| Interest and fixed-charge coverage | Operating cash flow and EBITDA coverage after maintenance capex and lease payments |
| Liquidity runway | Unrestricted cash, committed revolver capacity and months to a minimum cash level in downside cases |
| Capex intensity | Maintenance versus expansion capex, GPU financing and contracted utilization |
| Customer and supplier concentration | Largest revenue and receivable exposures, key equipment suppliers, power and landlord dependencies |
| Dilution | Options, warrants, convertibles, preferred securities and shares required for planned capex |
| Profitability trajectory | Gross margin, operating loss, free cash flow and the quality of non-GAAP adjustments |
| Refinancing and covenant risk | Rate resets, collateral, covenant headroom, cross-defaults and change-of-control terms |
| Technology obsolescence | Useful lives, replacement schedule, resale assumptions and exposure to falling compute prices |
| Governance and disclosure | Consistency of guidance, clarity of commitments and speed of covenant or concentration reporting |
| Valuation | Per-share value under explicit bull, base and bear assumptions after dilution |
Documents and calculations to complete before buying
- Download the latest 10-K and 10-Q, then mark every debt, lease, guarantee, purchase commitment and liquidity disclosure.
- Read each debt agreement and amendment. Record maturity, rate, collateral, covenants, mandatory prepayments and default remedies in a spreadsheet.
- Reconcile reported cash to unrestricted cash and committed credit. Exclude restricted or subsidiary cash that cannot fund parent obligations.
- Build a monthly 24-month cash model with base, operating-downside and refinancing-stress cases.
- Calculate the fully diluted share count, including equity required to fund committed projects and all convertible settlement alternatives.
- Reconcile contracted capacity, backlog and customer deposits to expected revenue and cash collections.
- Calculate project-level return after power, depreciation, maintenance and financing costs, then stress utilization, pricing and equipment life.
- Read the proxy statement for compensation, related-party arrangements, change-of-control provisions and authorized share capacity.
- Compare the latest guidance with the previous year’s forecasts and actual outcomes. Investigate every material miss.
- Decide in advance which condition invalidates the thesis, such as a covenant breach, an unfinanced maturity, unacceptable dilution or a return below the cost of capital.
Red flags that deserve a pause
- Operating cash flow is negative while expansion capex is described as essential.
- A maturity falls inside the modeled runway and management has no committed refinancing.
- Interest coverage depends on EBITDA adjustments that remove recurring cash costs.
- Customer prepayments or supplier credit fund routine payroll and interest rather than optional growth.
- One customer, supplier, landlord or power provider can materially change liquidity by ending or repricing a contract.
- Management reports utilization without contract term, price, customer credit or renewal detail.
- The share count excludes convertibles, warrants, at-the-market capacity or equity needed for announced projects.
- Asset returns require today’s GPU scarcity pricing and ignore replacement, power or resale risk.
- Disclosures use broad AI-demand claims while losses, receivables or debt service worsen.
Bottom line
The central question is not whether AI demand is real; it is whether this company can convert demand into durable cash after interest, principal, maintenance capex, power and dilution. A highly leveraged AI share is investable only after the maturity wall, liquidity runway, fully diluted ownership, customer and supplier concentration, asset returns and downside valuation have been quantified from current filings. If the company needs continuous favorable financing to survive its plan, treat access to capital—not the market narrative—as the decisive risk.
