Short answer: Choose quartz if you want a more consistent pattern and a simple water-and-mild-soap cleaning routine. Choose granite if you value natural stone variation and are willing to verify the particular slab’s sealing and care requirements. Neither is automatically cheaper or tougher: installed prices overlap, and real-world performance depends on the slab, fabrication, installation, heat exposure, impacts, seams, and manufacturer instructions.

Quartz and granite are fundamentally different surfaces

Quartz countertop products are engineered surfaces made from a manufactured blend, while granite is quarried natural stone cut into slabs. The United States International Trade Commission (USITC) treats both as competing countertop materials, but their appearance, production and care are not interchangeable.

Engineered quartz is manufactured to a design. That makes repeated color, veining and edge-to-edge planning more predictable, although individual slabs can still show some variation. Granite is formed by natural geological processes, so mineral movement, color, veining and small inclusions differ from slab to slab. A showroom sample is not a substitute for approving the actual slab.

In a 2026 USITC report using 2025 renovation data, quartz was reported as the most popular countertop material in home kitchen renovations at 39 percent of the market; granite accounted for 29 percent. Those figures describe reported market use, not a quality ranking or a guarantee that one material suits every kitchen.

Which is cheaper: quartz or granite?

There is no universal price winner. Published installed ranges overlap, and a local quote can move substantially with material tier, color, slab availability, fabrication complexity and installation scope.

Source and market Quartz, installed Granite, installed How to interpret it
Caesarstone Canada, 2026 CAD $60–$120 per sq. ft. CAD $55–$130 per sq. ft.; rare granite can exceed CAD $200 Canadian indicative ranges; not a universal price list
BuildDecide editorial comparison, 2026 USD $50–$120 per sq. ft. USD $40–$100 per sq. ft. U.S. editorial estimates, not a government or trade-association survey

Do not combine the Canadian and U.S. numbers into one range. Currency, labor markets, supply chains and regional fabrication practices differ. Current bids from fabricators in your area should take precedence over either published estimate.

Why a “per-square-foot” number is incomplete

Two kitchens with the same countertop area can have very different installed totals. The quote should identify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exact square footage and the number of slabs required
  • Material brand, collection, color and tier
  • Edge profile and its linear-foot charge, if any
  • Sink, faucet, cooktop and outlet cutouts
  • Seams, vein matching and any book-matching work
  • Delivery, template measurement and installation
  • Removal and disposal of the existing top
  • Backsplash, supports, build-up strips and plumbing disconnect or reconnection

Ask at least two local fabricators for itemized, like-for-like bids. Give each the same plan, square footage, sink and appliance details, edge profile and removal requirements. A lower material price can disappear if it requires an additional slab or has higher fabrication charges.

A simple way to compare bids

Put each proposal on one worksheet. Start with the material and number of slabs, then list fabrication, edge work, cutouts, seams, delivery, installation and removal as separate lines. Note whether tax, plumbing coordination, supports and backsplash work are included. If one fabricator uses a different slab layout, ask for the revised slab count and an explanation of how it changes waste and seam placement.

Ask when the price becomes firm. Some shops quote from cabinet plans and later revise the amount after templating. That is not necessarily a problem, but you should know which dimensions are allowances and which are measured facts. Keep the approved layout with the contract so a later change in sink position, overhang or vein direction is documented rather than assumed.

Appearance: predictable design versus natural variation

Quartz appearance

Because quartz is engineered, the manufacturer can repeat a background color or a programmed vein pattern across production runs. This helps when you need several pieces to coordinate. Pattern direction still matters: a long island, waterfall ends and a backsplash may require layout approval and additional slabs to keep visual movement aligned.

Granite appearance

Granite’s variation is its defining feature. Mineral flecks, veining, crystals and color shifts can change from one slab to the next, even within the same named stone. Inspect and reserve the actual slab before fabrication, especially for a large island or a design with prominent seams. Natural inclusions are not automatically defects, but your fabricator should explain any fissures, resin fills or structural concerns visible on the chosen slab.

How to decide

  • Choose quartz when repeatability and a controlled palette matter more than geological uniqueness.
  • Choose granite when you want every slab to have natural variation and are comfortable approving a specific piece.
  • For either material, ask to see seam locations and a digital or physical layout before cutting.

Lighting and layout matter as much as the sample

View the selected slab under lighting similar to the kitchen as well as in the showroom. Check the areas that will be most visible: the island front, sink run, backsplash and waterfall ends. Ask how the fabricator plans to orient directional veining and where unavoidable seams will fall. Approval should cover both the stone itself and the cut plan; a beautiful slab can produce a disappointing result if the most prominent vein is split at an inconvenient location.

Durability: what can be said with confidence

Both materials are sold for demanding kitchen use, but “durable” does not mean indestructible. Heat exposure, impact at an edge or cutout, inadequate support, movement in cabinets, seams and fabrication quality can all affect the outcome. The available evidence does not establish one independent, broad head-to-head heat or scratch test for quartz versus granite, so an exact temperature limit or a claim that either surface cannot chip, stain or crack would be misleading.

Stains and liquids

For the Silestone quartz example, Cosentino describes the surface as stain resistant and says routine cleaning with water and neutral soap is sufficient. That is a product-specific manufacturer statement; it should not be extended automatically to every engineered quartz line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Granite is not a single uniform material. Porosity and absorption differ by slab, and factory treatments can change performance. Cosentino’s Sensa granite range, for example, is marketed with a treatment intended to repel liquids and prevent stains and includes a stated 10-year material guarantee. That claim applies to that product range, not to all granite. Ask your supplier whether the selected slab is treated, what the treatment covers and how the warranty handles staining.

Scratches, chips and cracks

Every countertop can be damaged by concentrated impact, especially at a sink or cooktop cutout, a thin edge or a seam. Do not place heavy appliances where the cabinet structure cannot support them, and do not use the countertop as a cutting board. Your fabricator should specify support requirements for overhangs, dishwashers and seating areas.

If a chip or crack appears, stop applying force to the area and photograph it before attempting a repair. Contact the installer or supplier, because a repair, replacement or warranty claim may depend on the cause, location and product terms.

Performance depends on the installation too

A countertop is part of a system. Cabinets must be level and adequately supported, openings must be cut and finished correctly, and seams must be placed where the fabricator can support and bond them properly. Ask who is responsible if a cabinet moves, an appliance is changed after templating or a sink requires a different cutout. These questions do not make either material more durable, but they reduce avoidable installation-related failures.

Heat and hot cookware

Cosentino’s Silestone maintenance guidance warns that sudden temperature changes can affect the surface and recommends using trivets for hot objects. Its guidance includes the sentence: “Therefore, in order to avoid damage when placing hot objects on the surface, it is highly recommended to use trivets.” This is the manufacturer’s care instruction, not an independent laboratory comparison.

Use a trivet or heat-resistant hot-pan mat under cookware, countertop ovens, air fryers and other heat-producing appliances. Do not infer that a trivet makes direct heat harmless; it reduces direct contact and temperature shock. Follow the care manual for the exact quartz product you purchased.

Granite is often selected for its natural-stone heat reputation, but that does not justify a universal “safe temperature” promise. Thermal shock, pre-existing fissures, resin fills, sealers and sudden changes can matter. Ask the stone supplier for written heat-care instructions for the actual slab and treatment.

What to do after a heat incident

If a hot pan or appliance has contacted the counter directly, let the surface cool without adding cold water or placing another hot object nearby. Inspect for discoloration, a hairline crack, a change around a resin-filled area or damage near a seam. Photograph the area and contact the installer or manufacturer before trying a cleaner, polish or repair kit. The care document and warranty may specify what evidence is needed for a claim.

Routine maintenance compared

Task Engineered quartz Granite
Everyday cleaning For Silestone, Cosentino recommends water and mild or neutral soap. Use the cleaner specified by the fabricator or stone supplier; requirements vary by slab and treatment.
Harsh chemicals Silestone guidance says to avoid harsh chemicals. Do not assume a chemical is safe for the stone, finish or sealer; verify first.
Hot objects Use trivets; sudden temperature changes may affect Silestone. Obtain slab-specific heat guidance; avoid relying on generic claims.
Sealing Do not add a sealer unless the product documentation specifically calls for one. Ask whether the slab needs an impregnating sealer and how to test or maintain it.

A practical quartz cleaning routine

  1. Wipe crumbs and spills with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge.
  2. Clean with water and mild soap, following the product’s care sheet.
  3. Rinse away soap residue and dry the surface to prevent film.
  4. Use a trivet under hot cookware and avoid abrupt temperature changes.
  5. Check the warranty before using a specialty cleaner, solvent or abrasive pad.

Silestone’s instructions are an example, not a universal rule for every quartz brand. Keep the exact manual supplied with your slab.

A practical granite care routine

  1. Ask the fabricator whether the slab received a factory treatment or an on-site sealer.
  2. Get the recommended cleaner and instructions in writing.
  3. Wipe spills promptly, particularly oils, strongly colored foods and acidic liquids.
  4. Use a cutting board and trivets rather than placing blades or hot cookware directly on the stone.
  5. Have the supplier explain how to evaluate water absorption or sealer performance before applying more product.

The available sources do not support one universal granite resealing interval. Treat a sealer as a product-specific maintenance decision, not an automatic annual chore.

Everyday habits that protect either surface

Keep a cutting board and trivet where cooking actually happens so the safest habit is convenient. Lift small appliances instead of dragging them across the counter, and avoid standing or climbing on an overhang. Wipe spills rather than allowing residue to dry, but do not reach for an unapproved solvent simply because a mark is stubborn. A written product guide is more reliable than a generic online cleaning tip.

Sealers, warranties and documentation

Before signing a contract, request the product data sheet, care guide and written warranty. Confirm whether the warranty is for the slab only or also covers fabrication and installation. Ask whether staining, thermal damage, chips, seams, support failures and chemical damage are excluded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For treated granite, verify the treatment’s name, coverage period and maintenance conditions. The Sensa example states a 10-year material guarantee, but that does not establish the warranty terms for another granite collection or for your installer’s workmanship.

How to choose for your kitchen

Quartz is usually the better fit when:

  • You want consistent color and repeatable patterning.
  • You prefer a straightforward daily routine based on water and mild soap for the specific product.
  • You are prepared to use trivets and follow the manufacturer’s heat guidance.
  • You would rather avoid deciding whether a natural slab needs sealing.

Granite is usually the better fit when:

  • You want natural mineral variation and a one-of-a-kind slab.
  • You are willing to inspect and approve the actual slab before fabrication.
  • You will follow the supplier’s instructions for sealing, cleaning and heat.
  • A treated product’s documented stain protection or warranty is valuable to you.

When neither is an obvious winner

If your decision is based mainly on price, obtain local itemized bids first. The published ranges overlap, and an unusual granite color, extra slab or complex edge can cost more than a standard quartz design. If maintenance is the deciding factor, compare the written care documents for the exact products rather than relying on category-wide slogans.

Installation checklist

  1. Measure the project: record countertop runs, island dimensions, overhangs, backsplash areas and appliance openings.
  2. Define the scope: include demolition, disposal, template, delivery, cutouts, edge work, seams, supports and plumbing coordination.
  3. Select the material: record the manufacturer, collection, color, slab number and finish.
  4. Inspect the slab: approve the actual quartz or granite slab and mark acceptable natural features.
  5. Review the layout: confirm seam locations, vein direction, sink orientation and waterfall panels before cutting.
  6. Confirm care: obtain the product manual, cleaner guidance, heat precautions and sealer requirements.
  7. Document the warranty: keep invoices, slab identification, installer details and photographs of the completed work.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Comparing unlike quotes

A quote for material only cannot be compared fairly with one that includes cutouts, delivery and installation. Normalize the scope before choosing a bid.

Assuming all quartz behaves like one brand

Care instructions differ. Silestone’s water-and-mild-soap guidance and trivet warning apply to that product example. Read the manual for your selected quartz.

Assuming all granite needs the same sealer schedule

Granite absorption, finish and factory treatment vary. Ask the supplier how to evaluate the actual slab instead of applying a generic calendar.

Testing with harsh chemicals or direct heat

Do not experiment on an installed surface. Use trivets, mild approved cleaners and a hidden test area only when the manufacturer permits it.

Choosing from a small sample

Large-format variation, seam placement and lighting can change the result. View the full slab and approve the fabrication layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting the cutouts and edges

Sink, cooktop and outlet openings concentrate fabrication work and can influence both price and durability. Confirm their dimensions, corner radii, support details and edge treatment before the template is approved.

Bottom line

Quartz offers design consistency and, for products such as Silestone, a simple routine of water, mild soap and heat protection. Granite offers natural variation, but its maintenance and stain behavior must be evaluated slab by slab. Since Canadian and U.S. installed estimates overlap and no universal independent heat or scratch winner is established, the best choice is the material whose documented care requirements, appearance and like-for-like local quote match your kitchen and your willingness to maintain it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is quartz or granite better for a kitchen countertop?

Neither is universally better. Quartz is a strong fit for consistent patterning and simple routine cleaning, while granite suits buyers who want natural variation and are willing to verify the chosen slab’s sealing and care requirements.

Which costs less, quartz or granite?

Published installed estimates overlap. Caesarstone Canada lists CAD $60–$120 per square foot for quartz and CAD $55–$130 for granite, while a 2026 U.S. editorial comparison lists USD $50–$120 for quartz and USD $40–$100 for granite. Obtain local itemized bids because scope and fabrication can change the total.

Do granite countertops need to be sealed every year?

There is no supported universal interval. Granite absorption, finish and factory treatment vary. Ask the fabricator whether the slab needs an impregnating sealer and how to evaluate its performance before applying more product.

Can I put a hot pan directly on quartz?

Follow the exact product manual. Cosentino recommends trivets for Silestone and warns that sudden temperature changes can affect the surface. Use a trivet or heat-resistant mat and do not assume direct heat is harmless.

Do I need to approve the actual granite slab?

Yes, especially for a large island or prominent seams. Granite can vary in mineral movement, color, crystals and inclusions from slab to slab, so approve the actual slab and fabrication layout before cutting.

What should a countertop quote include?

Request material and slab count, square footage, edge profile, sink and appliance cutouts, seams or vein matching, delivery, templating, installation, supports, backsplash work, plumbing coordination and removal or disposal. Compare bids with identical scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are quartz countertops maintenance-free?

No countertop is maintenance-free. For Silestone, routine care is water and mild soap, with harsh chemicals avoided and trivets recommended. Other quartz products may have different instructions, so keep and follow the product’s care guide.

What warranty questions should I ask?

Ask whether coverage applies to the slab, fabrication and installation, and whether it excludes stains, thermal damage, chips, seams, support problems or chemical damage. Record the product, slab number, invoice and installation date.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Compare the exact products and complete installed scope, not just the material name or a square-foot headline. Quartz favors consistency and simple routine care; granite favors natural variation but requires slab-specific maintenance decisions.
