In one sentence: the classical Hall effect is a continuous transverse voltage caused by magnetic deflection of charge carriers, whereas the quantum Hall effect occurs in a sufficiently two-dimensional system at low temperature and strong perpendicular magnetic field, producing precisely quantized Hall-resistance plateaus and an almost vanishing longitudinal response.
The direct difference
Both effects are measured with the same basic geometry: drive current through a sample, apply a magnetic field, and measure a voltage across the sample in the direction perpendicular to the current. The magnetic field pushes moving carriers sideways, so charge builds up on opposite edges and creates a transverse electric field. That transverse signal is the Hall voltage.
The distinction is the physical regime and the resulting response. A classical Hall measurement can be made in an ordinary conducting sample, including a bulk semiconductor, and its Hall voltage changes continuously with magnetic field and carrier properties. The quantum Hall effect requires a sufficiently two-dimensional electron system, a large magnetic field perpendicular to its plane, and a temperature low enough for discrete energy levels to remain resolved. In that regime, the Hall resistance forms flat, discrete plateaus; on a well-developed plateau, the longitudinal resistivity approaches zero.

|---|---|---|
| Physical system | A conducting sample; it need not be two-dimensional | A sufficiently two-dimensional electron system |
| Field and temperature | Requires a magnetic field; ordinary laboratory temperatures may be adequate | Requires a large field perpendicular to the plane and sufficiently low temperature for quantization to resolve |
| Main mechanism | Lorentz-force deflection and charge accumulation at the edges | Landau-level quantization with robust transport plateaus |
| Hall response | Generally varies continuously with field, carrier density, and material | Locks into discrete Hall-resistance plateaus over suitable field or density ranges |
| Longitudinal response | Not inherently zero | Becomes very small and approaches zero on developed plateaus |
| Typical practical role | Hall-voltage sensing and semiconductor or material characterization | Precision resistance metrology and resistance standards |
Thus, “quantum” does not mean merely that a classical Hall signal is measured accurately. It identifies a different transport regime in which quantum energy levels determine the resistance.

How the classical Hall effect works
Current, field and sideways force
Suppose conventional current flows along the length of a sample and a magnetic field is applied through the sample. Charge carriers moving with the current experience a magnetic force perpendicular to both their motion and the field. Electrons and positive carriers deflect in opposite directions, with the sign of the measured Hall voltage revealing the sign of the dominant carrier in a suitable measurement.
Charge separation creates the Hall voltage
The sideways deflection moves carriers toward one edge. As charge accumulates, an electric field develops across the width of the sample. This field opposes further net sideways motion. The resulting potential difference between side contacts is the Hall voltage, conventionally measured transverse to the applied current.
What the signal tells you
The measured Hall value depends on carrier density, magnetic-field strength, and the material and geometry of the sample. That dependence makes the effect a diagnostic tool rather than just a demonstration of magnetic deflection. Hall measurements are widely used to characterize semiconductors: the transverse voltage can help determine whether electrons or holes dominate and can provide information about carrier concentration when the sample, field and measurement conditions are known.

In the classical regime, changing the field normally changes the Hall voltage smoothly. There is no requirement for the sample to be a two-dimensional electron gas, no requirement for cryogenic operation, and no expectation that the resistance will settle into exact, universal plateaus.
How the quantum Hall effect works
A two-dimensional conducting system is essential
The conventional quantum Hall effect is observed when carriers are confined to a sufficiently two-dimensional system. Their motion in the plane is free enough to carry current, while the strong magnetic field is applied perpendicular to that plane. A generic three-dimensional conductor does not automatically enter this regime simply because its field is large.
Landau levels replace a continuous orbital spectrum
In a perpendicular magnetic field, the allowed orbital energies of the two-dimensional carriers separate into discrete Landau levels. As field or carrier density changes, the chemical potential moves through these levels. When it lies in a gap between extended states, the bulk transport changes little over a range of conditions, allowing a stable Hall plateau to appear.

Hall resistance and longitudinal resistivity are different measurements
The transverse voltage divided by the applied current is the Hall resistance, usually written Rxy. A separate voltage measured along the direction of current gives the longitudinal response, often represented by a longitudinal resistivity such as ρxx. On a well-developed quantum Hall plateau, Rxy remains fixed at a quantized value while the longitudinal resistivity becomes very small and approaches zero in the ideal description.

“Zero” should be read as a limiting ideal, not as a promise that every real instrument displays exactly zero volts. Contact resistance, disorder, thermal broadening, imperfect alignment and insufficient field or cooling can leave a measurable longitudinal signal.
The integer quantum Hall relation
For the integer quantum Hall effect, the quantized Hall resistance is
RH = h/(νe2),
where h is Planck’s constant, e is the elementary charge, and ν is an integer filling factor. The integer identifies how the quantized levels are filled in the observed state.
The natural resistance scale is the von Klitzing constant,
Recommended Free Tools
RK = h/e2.
Consequently, the integer plateaus are rational fractions of that fundamental scale: changing the integer filling factor changes which plateau is observed, but not the underlying constants. This is unlike a classical Hall coefficient, whose value reflects the particular carrier population and material.

Integer and fractional quantum Hall effects are not the same
The integer effect follows the relation above with an integer filling factor and is the regime most directly associated with the conventional quantum Hall resistance standard. Fractional quantum Hall states occur at fractional filling factors and are more strongly driven by interactions among the carriers. They are a separate many-body regime, not simply a more precise version of the classical Hall effect and not interchangeable with the integer effect.
When interpreting a result, identify which regime is being claimed. A smooth Hall curve is classical; a plateau indexed by an integer filling factor is an integer quantum Hall observation; a fractional plateau requires evidence for the distinct interaction-driven state. Calling every flat-looking feature “quantum Hall” can therefore be misleading.
What conditions are needed to observe quantization?
Large perpendicular magnetic field
The field must be oriented perpendicular to the two-dimensional conducting plane. Its magnitude must be large enough to separate the Landau levels relative to broadening from disorder and temperature. A field applied in the plane does not provide the same orbital quantization in the intended geometry.

Thermal energy can smear the occupation of neighboring levels. Cooling is therefore needed until the relevant gaps remain resolved. The exact temperature is platform-dependent. NIST describes conventional GaAs resistance-standard devices operating at 1.2 K or below, together with strong magnetic fields. That is an implementation condition for the described GaAs devices, not a universal threshold for graphene or every newer material system.
Good sample quality and a usable two-dimensional channel
Disorder, inhomogeneous density, poor contacts and leakage can broaden levels or obscure the plateau. The conducting layer must be sufficiently two-dimensional, and the device must be wired so that transverse and longitudinal voltages can be separated reliably.
A suitable range of field or carrier density
Plateaus appear only across suitable ranges of magnetic field or carrier density. Between plateaus, the Hall resistance changes and the longitudinal response can rise. A single field point is not enough to establish quantization; the characteristic feature is a stable plateau over a range, accompanied by a strongly suppressed longitudinal response.

How the two effects are measured
Classical Hall measurement
- Place current contacts at opposite ends of the conducting sample.
- Place voltage contacts on opposite sides, transverse to the current path.
- Apply a known magnetic field through the sample and record the transverse voltage.
- Reverse the field, current, or both when practical to separate the Hall signal from voltage offsets and longitudinal pickup.
- Plot the transverse voltage or Hall coefficient against field, carrier condition or another controlled variable. A continuous trend is the expected classical behavior.
The result is useful only when the contact geometry, sample dimensions, current level and material context are recorded. A transverse voltage can contain unwanted longitudinal contributions if side contacts are not symmetrically positioned.
Quantum Hall measurement
- Prepare a sufficiently two-dimensional conducting device with separate current and voltage contacts.
- Mount it in a system capable of applying a strong magnetic field perpendicular to the conducting plane.
- Cool the device enough for the relevant energy gaps to be resolved; conventional GaAs standard devices described by NIST use 1.2 K or below.
- Drive a controlled current and measure both the transverse voltage, for Rxy = Vy/Ix, and the longitudinal voltage or resistivity.
- Sweep magnetic field or carrier density. Look for a field or density interval in which the Hall resistance stays at a discrete value while the longitudinal response becomes very small.
- Compare the plateau value with h/(νe2), identifying the filling factor and documenting temperature, field, current and device material.
Reliable metrology also requires attention to contact resistance, wiring, current heating, magnetic-field calibration and leakage. A plateau that shifts with temperature or current, or that coincides with a substantial longitudinal signal, is not equivalent to an ideal resistance-standard result.
Why the quantum Hall response forms plateaus
In a classical picture, changing the field changes the sideways force and therefore changes the Hall voltage continuously. In the quantum system, the field organizes orbital motion into Landau levels. Over certain ranges of field or density, the Fermi level lies in a mobility gap and the conducting states that carry current are confined in a way that leaves the transverse resistance insensitive to small changes in the control variable. The result is a flat segment rather than a continuously sloped curve.
The edges of the device provide conducting channels associated with the filled levels, while the bulk contributes little dissipative transport on a well-formed plateau. That is why two measurements change together: the transverse response is locked to a quantized value and the longitudinal dissipation is strongly suppressed. If temperature, disorder or an inadequate field smears the level structure, the plateau narrows or disappears and the longitudinal signal reappears.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the quantum effect matters for resistance metrology
The quantum Hall effect provides a reproducible resistance value tied to fundamental constants rather than to the dimensions or composition of a particular metal resistor. NIST reports that quantized resistance values can be measured to about one part per billion. That level of reproducibility is why the effect underpins the practical resistance standard.

A classical Hall device is usually selected when the goal is to sense a changing field, identify carrier type or characterize a semiconductor. A quantum Hall device is selected when the goal is a fixed, fundamental resistance reference and the laboratory can provide the required conditions.
Common confusions and how to avoid them
Confusing Hall voltage with Hall resistance
The classical experiment often emphasizes the measured transverse voltage. In quantum Hall work, the central quantity is the ratio of transverse voltage to current, Rxy. Comparing raw voltages from two devices without accounting for current can hide the actual distinction.
Assuming any two-dimensional device is quantum Hall
Two-dimensionality is necessary but not sufficient. A large perpendicular field, low enough temperature, resolved Landau levels and a clear plateau are also required.
Treating a flat section as proof of an ideal plateau
Instrument offsets, limited field range or plotting resolution can make a classical curve look locally flat. Check the longitudinal response and verify that the value agrees with the appropriate quantized relation over a meaningful field or density interval.
Calling the fractional effect “the same” as the integer effect
Fractional states are interaction-driven and belong to a distinct regime. Use the integer relation only when the observed state has an integer filling factor.
Reading “zero longitudinal resistivity” literally in every experiment
The ideal theory predicts a vanishing longitudinal response on a developed plateau. Real measurements can show a small residual signal from heating, disorder, contacts and instrumentation. “Approaches zero” is the accurate experimental description.
Generalizing one device’s temperature or field
The 1.2 K-or-below condition reported for conventional GaAs devices is not a universal operating specification. State the material and device context whenever quoting it.
Choosing the right concept for a practical problem
| If your goal is to… | Use the classical Hall effect when… | Use the quantum Hall effect when… |
|---|---|---|
| Measure a changing magnetic field | You need a continuous voltage or resistance response from a practical sample | You are not seeking a sensor transfer curve; quantization is usually unnecessary |
| Characterize a semiconductor | You need carrier sign, density-related information or material comparison | You specifically need a quantized reference state |
| Build a resistance standard | A material-dependent resistor is acceptable for the application | You can supply a two-dimensional device, strong perpendicular field and cryogenic operation |
| Study quantum many-body physics | You are examining ordinary carrier deflection or material transport | You are investigating integer plateaus or the separate fractional, interaction-driven regime |
In short, classical Hall measurements are generally simpler and more flexible, while quantum Hall measurements trade substantial experimental complexity for a resistance value anchored to fundamental constants.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Both effects produce a voltage transverse to current because a magnetic field deflects charge carriers and causes charge separation.
- The classical effect does not require a two-dimensional electron system and normally changes continuously with field and carrier properties.
- The conventional quantum effect requires a sufficiently two-dimensional system, a large perpendicular field and low enough temperature for Landau-level quantization to be resolved.
- On a quantum Hall plateau, Rxy is discrete and the longitudinal resistivity approaches zero.
- For the integer effect, RH = h/(νe2); fractional quantum Hall states are a separate interaction-driven regime.
- Quantized resistance is the basis of the practical resistance standard, with NIST reporting measurements to about one part per billion in its stated metrology context.
