Quantum gravimetry is not yet a universal replacement for magnetic or seismic exploration. It measures gravity through laser-cooled atoms and is most useful when subsurface density contrasts, basin geometry or fine gravity structure matter. Magnetic surveys remain the fastest mature regional screen for many mineral systems, while seismic refraction and reflection resolve contacts, thickness and structure needed for drill planning. The practical choice is usually an integrated sequence: magnetic coverage first, gravity—classical or quantum—over targets where density adds information, and seismic work on priority areas before drilling.
What each survey actually measures
These methods are not interchangeable sensors aimed at the same physical property. Each responds to a different contrast in the subsurface, so “better” depends on the geological question, target depth, expected contrast and the logistics of collecting data over the area.
Quantum gravimetry: density expressed as gravity
A quantum gravimeter measures the acceleration produced by gravity’s effect on falling atoms. In the atom-interferometer approach described by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), atoms are laser-cooled, placed into a quantum superposition, allowed to fall, and recombined. Their interference encodes local gravitational acceleration. The result is an absolute gravity measurement rather than a reading tied to a mechanically drifting spring.

Gravity responds primarily to differences in subsurface density. A dense intrusive body, sulfide-rich zone or basement high can produce a positive anomaly; a low-density basin, weathered zone or void can produce a negative one. Gravity does not identify mineralogy by itself. The same anomaly can be explained by several combinations of density, depth, shape and host-rock geometry, so interpretation normally requires geological, magnetic, drilling or seismic constraints.

The Northern Territory Geological Survey’s 2025 report describes the Gravio instrument as an absolute quantum gravimeter using cold-atom interferometry. Its atoms have no inherent sensor drift, an attribute that can help preserve long-wavelength information and reduce dependence on repeated instrument calibration. The instrument is still sensitive to field conditions: vibration, platform motion, changing acceleration and the processing used to remove those effects can influence the final map.
Magnetic surveying: magnetization contrasts
Magnetic instruments detect variations caused by differing amounts and types of magnetic minerals. Airborne or ground measurements can outline magnetic units, faults, dykes and alteration patterns. The US Geological Survey (USGS) notes that airborne magnetic data can identify ancient faults, rock types and signatures associated with potential mineral deposits. A USGS/SEG review calls magnetic surveying “the primary exploration tool in the search for minerals,” reflecting its speed, broad coverage and long-established interpretation workflows.
A magnetic anomaly is not a direct assay of ore. A weakly magnetic deposit may be invisible, while a magnetic host rock can dominate the response and mask a smaller target. Remanent magnetization, depth ambiguity and multiple geological sources can also make interpretation non-unique. Magnetic data are therefore powerful for mapping domains and structures, but they need geological control and, where appropriate, gravity or seismic constraints.
Seismic refraction and reflection: elastic waves and geometry
Seismic surveys send elastic energy through the ground and record travel times and reflections. Refraction emphasizes changes in wave velocity along and below interfaces; reflection images contrasts that return energy to the receivers. The USGS lists practical outputs including deposit extent and thickness, overburden thickness, water-table depth and critical geological contacts.

Because seismic data provide a geometric model, they are especially valuable for deciding where and how deep to drill. Velocity contrasts, coupling to the ground and ambient noise control data quality. Acquisition generally requires line or grid layouts, a source, receivers and more field logistics than a rapid airborne magnetic screen. Seismic can resolve structure that gravity and magnetics only suggest, but it is not automatically the best first-pass method over a large, sparsely known region.

What the published performance evidence shows
Mobile quantum gravimeter results
A mobile atom-interferometer gravimeter reported by the USGS in Science Advances in 2019 achieved a sensitivity of 37 μGal/√Hz and better than 2 μGal long-term stability. In a Berkeley Hills field survey, the measured survey uncertainty was about 0.04 mGal. These are instrument and survey results under the reported test conditions, not a guarantee for every vehicle, terrain or production campaign.
For scale, a gal is a centimetre-per-second-squared unit used in gravimetry; 1 mGal equals 1,000 μGal. The useful comparison is not simply the smallest laboratory number. A mineral program must also account for line spacing, repeatability, platform motion, terrain corrections, filtering and whether the anomaly is large enough and sufficiently isolated to support a drilling decision.

Bidel and colleagues, writing in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth in 2023, reported airborne quantum-gravimeter errors of 0.6–1.3 mGal. The range depended on flight conditions and filtering. In the same comparison, a traditional LaCoste–Romberg platform gravimeter showed 3–4 mGal errors. The result indicates a potential airborne advantage, but it does not eliminate the need to validate the system on the aircraft, flight profile and terrain used by a particular exploration campaign.

Northern Territory lithium-prospect trial
The Northern Territory Geological Survey’s 2025 report provides a field example directly relevant to mineral exploration. A Gravio quantum-gravity trial covered a high-resolution area of 15 km² with 50–200 m spacing and a regional area of 67 km² with 400 m spacing. The quantum data agreed well with measurements from a Scintrex CG-5 classical gravimeter. The comparison also showed Gravio capturing shorter-wavelength signals, which can indicate finer geological features.
The report simultaneously identified operational challenges. The shorter-wavelength capability is expected to improve further when a moving platform is implemented in the next development stage, but that is a development direction rather than a completed production result. The trial therefore supports quantum gravimetry as a promising complementary measurement, not as proof that it can replace every established survey.
When quantum gravimetry is the better choice
Choose a quantum-gravity component when the exploration question is fundamentally about density and the expected signal could be lost or blurred by the limitations of a conventional instrument. The strongest use cases are:

- Long-duration stability: Absolute operation and the absence of inherent atom-sensor drift are valuable when a project needs consistent gravity ties across a campaign.
- Areas already screened magnetically: Magnetics has mapped the structural and lithologic framework, but density remains uncertain and could change the ranking of drill targets.
- Airborne or mobile platforms under evaluation: A project can support careful motion testing, independent checks and processing trials rather than assuming a plug-and-play replacement.
Quantum gravimetry is less compelling when the target has little density contrast, when the principal uncertainty is a fault or contact geometry that seismic can resolve directly, or when a large region needs a rapid first-pass screen and airborne magnetics already provides the needed discrimination.

When magnetic surveying should come first
Start with magnetic coverage when the project is regional, the geology is poorly mapped, or magnetic minerals are expected to distinguish host units and structures. Airborne acquisition can cover broad areas quickly, making it suitable for ranking belts, identifying fault corridors and tracing dykes or intrusive trends before committing to denser ground work.
Magnetics should not be treated as a universal detector. A non-magnetic ore body in a non-magnetic host may produce little useful response. Depth and source ambiguity can also cause a compelling-looking anomaly to represent a deep basement feature rather than a shallow economic target. Use geological mapping, rock-property measurements and other geophysics to test that interpretation before drilling.
When seismic surveying should be added
Add seismic refraction or reflection after regional methods have narrowed the target area and the remaining decision depends on geometry. Seismic is the appropriate escalation when you need to estimate:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- the thickness and extent of a deposit or basin fill;
- the depth to the water table;
- the position of faults, contacts or other critical interfaces; or
- the safest and most informative location and depth for drill holes.
Seismic acquisition demands a source, receivers, suitable coupling and quality control along lines or grids. Noise, weak velocity contrasts and difficult ground can reduce usable penetration. A seismic section should therefore be designed around a specific unresolved geological question, not collected simply because it is the most detailed-looking method.

A practical integrated workflow
- Define the decision and target property. Write down whether the immediate uncertainty is lithology, structure, density, thickness, water table or drill depth. This prevents selecting a sensor before identifying the question.
- Compile existing constraints. Gather geological maps, known mineral occurrences, topography, prior wells and any available magnetic, gravity or seismic data. Estimate where density, magnetization and velocity contrasts should occur.
- Acquire regional magnetic coverage. Use airborne or ground magnetics to map lithologic domains, faults and intrusive trends across the broad search area. Rank anomalies by geological plausibility rather than amplitude alone.
- Add gravity where density matters. Use conventional gravity, quantum gravimetry or both over basins, basement highs, intrusive bodies and targets whose density contrast could alter the ranking. If using a quantum system, plan motion testing, repeat stations and independent checks before interpreting subtle anomalies.
- Design the quantum survey around operations. Specify platform type, speed, vibration environment, line or station spacing, filtering and tie strategy. The Northern Territory trial demonstrates that 50–200 m spacing can support high-resolution work over 15 km², while 400 m spacing was used over a 67 km² regional area; those values are examples, not universal specifications.
- Resolve priority geometry with seismic. On the best-ranked targets, collect refraction, reflection or a combination to constrain contacts, overburden, thickness and drill depth.
- Build a joint geological model. Test whether a gravity anomaly has a plausible density source, whether magnetic boundaries align with mapped contacts, and whether seismic horizons support the inferred depth. Keep alternative models where the data are non-unique.
- Place and stage drilling. Use the integrated model to choose collars and depths, then update the model with lithology, density, magnetic susceptibility and velocity measurements from each hole.
Survey design, quality control and interpretation pitfalls
Do not confuse sensitivity with exploration resolution
A quoted sensitivity such as 37 μGal/√Hz describes noise performance under specified conditions and integration time. Resolution of an ore body also depends on station or line spacing, terrain, depth, anomaly shape and processing. A highly sensitive instrument cannot recover a feature that is undersampled or indistinguishable from a larger regional trend.
Separate instrument drift from platform motion
Quantum atoms do not have inherent sensor drift in the way a mechanical sensing element can, but the complete survey system still experiences aircraft or vehicle acceleration, vibration and navigation errors. The 2023 airborne error range of 0.6–1.3 mGal demonstrates why flight conditions and filtering must be reported with the result.
Watch for non-unique anomalies
Gravity, magnetics and seismic each admit multiple geological explanations. A dense body at depth can resemble a smaller shallow body in gravity; magnetic amplitude can reflect susceptibility, remanence or geometry; seismic velocity can be affected by saturation, fracturing and compaction. Inversion should be constrained by measured rock properties and geology, with uncertainty carried into the drilling decision.
Use independent checks
Repeat stations, tie lines, overlap between adjacent blocks and a second instrument provide practical tests of repeatability. In the Northern Territory trial, agreement between Gravio and the Scintrex CG-5 was an important validation step. Similar cross-checks are prudent whenever a new quantum system is introduced to a production workflow.
Match wavelength to target scale
Broad spacing emphasizes regional structure; close spacing preserves shorter-wavelength features. The Gravio comparison’s ability to capture shorter-wavelength signals is relevant only if the survey is sampled densely enough and the processing does not remove those features. Choose spacing from the smallest target you need to resolve, then verify that terrain and operational speed permit it.
Decision framework: which method should you fund first?
| Exploration situation | First choice | Reason to add another method |
|---|---|---|
| Large, poorly mapped region | Airborne magnetics | Add gravity for density domains; use seismic only on ranked targets |
| Known basin or basement-geometry problem | Gravity, potentially quantum | Add seismic to determine contacts, thickness and depth before drilling |
| Magnetically quiet target | Gravity or seismic, depending on density and geometry | Use rock-property measurements to determine whether either contrast is viable |
| Drill location and depth are the immediate risks | Seismic refraction/reflection | Use magnetics and gravity to constrain the broader model and line placement |
| New quantum system proposed for production | Pilot alongside a classical gravimeter | Require repeatability, motion characterization and independent geological validation |
Bottom-line interpretation
Quantum gravimetry is best viewed as an emerging high-stability gravity capability. Its atom-interferometry principle, reported field performance and Northern Territory trial show why it can add value where density contrasts and fine gravity structure matter. The same evidence also shows that deployment, vibration, filtering and production-scale reliability remain practical constraints.
Magnetic surveying remains the default regional screen because it is rapid, broad-area and mature. Seismic remains the specialist tool for resolving geometry, thickness and contacts that determine drill placement. For most mineral programs, the defensible strategy is not to choose one winner: map the regional framework magnetically, add quantum or conventional gravity where density changes the geological model, and use seismic to turn ranked anomalies into drill-ready targets.
