Quantum scars and quantum birthmarks describe different signatures of nonclassical dynamics. A quantum scar is a spatial or wavefunction-intensity pattern in one quantum eigenstate, associated with an unstable periodic orbit in the corresponding classically chaotic system. A quantum birthmark is a proposed long-lived memory of a nonstationary state’s preparation and early evolution that remains visible in its infinite-time behavior.
The concepts can interact without being synonyms. In the stadium-billiard calculation presented in a 2026 Physical Review X article, scars significantly enhance the birthmark signal. That result shows one route by which the phenomena combine; it does not establish that every birthmark is caused by a scar or that the proposal has already been demonstrated experimentally.
The distinction in one table
| Question | Quantum scar | Quantum birthmark |
|---|---|---|
| What is being described? | A structured feature of an individual quantum eigenstate | Persistent long-time behavior of a nonstationary quantum state |
| Where is the signature seen? | In the eigenstate’s probability or wavefunction intensity, often in position or phase space | In an infinite-time average or other long-time observable |
| What leaves the imprint? | An unstable periodic orbit in the classical counterpart | The initial state and its early-time evolution |
| Typical language | Eigenstate, energy-domain, wavefunction enhancement | Time-domain memory, revival, nonergodic long-time behavior |
| How do they relate? | Can contribute to or amplify a birthmark in a particular model | A broader framework that can include scarring-related enhancement |
This comparison follows the established scarring review by Lev Kaplan and the birthmark framework introduced in the 2026 primary study. It is a conceptual guide, not a claim that the two effects have identical mathematical definitions in every model.

An eigenstate feature, not a literal classical path
In quantum mechanics, an eigenstate is a stationary solution of the system’s Hamiltonian. Apart from an overall phase that changes with time, its probability distribution does not evolve. A quantum scar is an unusually organized enhancement in that stationary state: probability or wavefunction intensity is concentrated near the route associated with an unstable periodic orbit of the corresponding classical system.

The word scar is metaphorical. The eigenstate does not contain a tiny classical particle following the orbit, and the enhancement is not a photograph of a trajectory. Rather, the classical orbit helps explain why a state that might otherwise look statistically irregular has a repeatable structure. Kaplan’s review describes this as non-random quantum-wavefunction behavior near unstable periodic orbits in systems whose classical dynamics are chaotic.
Why instability matters
A stable classical orbit tends to keep nearby trajectories together. An unstable periodic orbit does the opposite: small deviations grow, so a classical trajectory eventually leaves the orbit. Quantum mechanics nevertheless permits waves to interfere constructively along the orbit’s vicinity. Under suitable conditions, that interference produces a visible intensity enhancement in selected eigenstates.
The enhancement is therefore a relationship between three ingredients: a chaotic classical phase space, a periodic orbit that is unstable in the classical dynamics, and a quantum eigenstate whose wave pattern is unusually concentrated around that orbit. Remove the eigenstate from the description and there is no scar to point to; the phenomenon is an energy-domain property of a stationary state.
What a scar does not imply
- It does not mean that every eigenstate in a chaotic system is strongly scarred.
- It does not by itself prove that the system is globally nonergodic.
- It does not say that all long-time observables retain information about how the state was prepared.
- It does not make the quantum state classical or turn the periodic orbit into an exact quantum trajectory.
These qualifications matter because “scar” is often used loosely. A visual ridge in a wavefunction, a recurrence in a time trace, and an atypical many-body state may all be called scar-like in popular explanations, but they are not automatically the same object.
What a quantum birthmark is
A memory of preparation and early evolution
The 2026 Physical Review X article introduces a quantum birthmark as a permanent signature left by an initial state and its early-time evolution in a general quantum system. The authors’ abstract describes it as a signature that can produce nonergodic behavior persisting even in the infinite-time limit.
The key difference from a scar is the object being tracked. A birthmark starts with a nonstationary state—typically a prepared superposition that evolves in time. The question is whether the state’s long-time behavior still depends on details of its preparation and on what happened during its early evolution, instead of becoming completely independent of that history.
“Permanent” here means persistent in the relevant infinite-time quantity defined by the framework, not that a laboratory signal remains unchanged at every instant. An observable can fluctuate, dephase, and show complicated short-term motion while its long-time average retains a reproducible memory of the initial condition.

Two enhancement mechanisms in the framework
The paper separates the birthmark signal into two conceptually different contributions.
- Universal enhancement: a contribution constrained by global symmetries of the quantum system. Because it follows from broad symmetry information, it is not tied to one specially chosen classical orbit.
- Revival enhancement: an additional contribution connected to the state’s early-time dynamics. Recurrences before the Heisenberg time can reinforce the memory that survives in the long-time limit.
The Heisenberg time is the characteristic scale at which the discreteness of the spectrum becomes important for quantum recurrences. The birthmark paper uses pre-Heisenberg-time recurrences as part of the mechanism that can strengthen the revival contribution; it does not present a universal numerical recurrence time that applies to every system.
Why “birthmark” is a time-domain term
Imagine preparing two states in the same Hamiltonian but with different spatial profiles, phases, or energy-weight distributions. If all memory of preparation disappeared, their infinite-time observables would agree whenever the usual conserved quantities agree. A birthmark is the proposed exception: information encoded at preparation, and reinforced by early dynamics, remains detectable in a suitably defined long-time behavior.
This framing is broader than looking for a bright stripe in one eigenfunction. A birthmark concerns how a whole evolving state samples the spectrum and how correlations built up early can survive dephasing. It can therefore be present even when no single eigenstate offers the visual signature normally associated with scarring.

How the mechanisms differ in practice
Stationary versus evolving states
To investigate a scar, researchers inspect individual eigenstates, often plotting their position-space probability density or a phase-space representation and comparing enhanced regions with unstable classical orbits. The state is stationary, so the analysis is organized by energy or eigenstate index.
To investigate a birthmark, researchers prepare a nonstationary state, evolve it, and examine a long-time quantity or infinite-time limit. The analysis is organized around state preparation, early-time recurrences, and the persistence of memory after extended evolution. The two protocols can use the same Hamiltonian but ask different questions.
Local orbit information versus global and historical information
A scar points to a particular organizing structure in classical phase space: an unstable periodic orbit. A birthmark combines information about global symmetries with the actual history of the prepared state during its early evolution. The first is a localized eigenstate pattern; the second is a memory effect defined over the dynamics of a nonstationary state.

Different meanings of “nonergodic”
Both discussions can involve the word nonergodic, but that does not make them equivalent. Scarring can make selected eigenstates atypical without forcing every ensemble or every time average to violate the relevant ergodic expectations. A birthmark, by definition in the 2026 proposal, concerns nonergodic behavior that survives in an infinite-time quantity because preparation history remains encoded.

Where quantum scars and birthmarks meet: the stadium billiard
The concrete connection in the 2026 paper is a stadium billiard, a standard model in quantum chaos. Its classical counterpart has chaotic trajectories, while the quantum version provides a setting in which both eigenstate scarring and long-time state evolution can be calculated.
In the authors’ calculation, quantum birthmarks appear and can be significantly enhanced by quantum scars. The interpretation is not that a scar and a birthmark are two names for one pattern. Instead, the scarred eigenstates provide an additional channel through which the prepared state’s early dynamics can build a stronger long-time memory.
A useful way to picture the interaction is spectral. A prepared state is a superposition of eigenstates. If some of the eigenstates participating in that superposition carry enhanced weight near unstable periodic orbits, the early-time wave dynamics can show stronger recurrences. Those recurrences feed the revival part of the birthmark framework, increasing the eventual signal in the model.
This is an example of enhancement, not a necessity theorem. The study does not show that every birthmark requires a scar, nor that a scar automatically creates a birthmark for every choice of initial state or observable. The strength of the effect depends on the Hamiltonian, the preparation, the symmetry sector, and the quantity used to define the long-time behavior.
Why a scar does not automatically make a system nonergodic
Scarring is often discussed alongside quantum ergodicity because an atypical eigenstate appears to conflict with the idea that chaotic eigenstates should look statistically alike. The relationship is more subtle than that apparent conflict.
A 2021 study of the chaotic Dicke model reported scarring across its eigenstates while arguing that quantum ergodicity can still be attained as an ensemble property after temporal averages. That conclusion belongs to the model and averaging procedure studied there. It should not be promoted to a universal resolution of every debate about quantum ergodicity.

The practical lesson is to ask what is being averaged. A statement about individual eigenstates is not interchangeable with a statement about an ensemble, and neither is automatically the same as an infinite-time average of one prepared nonstationary state. The averaging operation, order of limits, symmetry sector, and observable can change the conclusion.
Do not confuse quantum birthmarks with many-body scars
“Many-body scar” is a related but distinct expression used in research on interacting quantum systems. The 2023 Annual Review of many-body scars discusses atypical states and associated effects such as many-body revivals and nonthermal stationary states. Those systems can show persistent oscillations or unusually slow relaxation, making them natural context for a discussion of memory and ergodicity.
However, many-body scar research is not a synonym for the birthmark definition introduced in the 2026 paper. Many-body scars generally refer to special states embedded in an otherwise thermalizing spectrum, often identified through their anomalous dynamics or entanglement. A quantum birthmark is defined by the persistence of an initial-state and early-time imprint in an infinite-time behavior, whether or not the system is described using the many-body-scar framework.
When reading a paper, identify which noun is doing the technical work. “Scarred eigenstate” points to an atypical stationary state. “Many-body revival” points to a dynamical phenomenon in an interacting system. “Quantum birthmark” points to the proposed long-time memory framework. Related mechanisms may coexist, but the labels should not be merged.
A practical way to classify a claimed observation
Use the following questions before deciding whether a result concerns a scar, a birthmark, both, or neither:
- What state is measured? If the result concerns one stationary eigenstate, it is in the scar category. If it begins with a prepared superposition and tracks evolution, it may concern a birthmark.
- What is the reference structure? Alignment with an unstable periodic orbit supports a scarring interpretation. Dependence on preparation history and early recurrences supports a birthmark interpretation.
- What quantity survives at long times? A static intensity enhancement is not the same as an infinite-time memory observable. Check the definition rather than inferring it from a picture.
- What averaging is performed? Distinguish an eigenstate average, an ensemble average, a finite-time average, and an infinite-time limit.
- Is the result model-specific? The stadium-billiard enhancement is a calculated example. It should not be generalized to all chaotic systems without a separate derivation.
This checklist prevents a common category error: treating any recurrence as a birthmark or any structured wavefunction as proof of long-time memory.

What the current evidence establishes—and what it does not
Established scarring background
Quantum scarring is an established topic in quantum-chaos theory. Kaplan’s 1999 review provides the standard description of enhanced, non-random wavefunction behavior near unstable periodic orbits in classically chaotic systems. The definition is supported by the broader literature on eigenstate structure and semiclassical dynamics.

Status of the birthmark proposal
The birthmark concept is anchored here by the article published in Physical Review X 16, 031063 on 10 September 2026. That paper introduces the framework, derives its universal and revival contributions, and illustrates the scar-enhanced effect in a stadium billiard calculation.
The article also discusses prospects for experimental observation. On the evidence described here, the birthmark framework should be presented as theoretical research with a model illustration, not as an already demonstrated experimental phenomenon. Claims about universality beyond the paper’s framework, the likelihood of observing the effect in a particular laboratory platform, or the field’s future direction require additional evidence.
No universal success rate or prevalence number
There is no established prevalence figure, experimental success rate, or named statistic needed to compare scars with birthmarks in the sources considered. A numerical claim about how often birthmarks occur, how large the enhancement is in general, or how many systems exhibit it would overstate what has been established.

The clearest answer to the three questions readers usually ask
What is a quantum birthmark?
It is the proposed persistent signature of a nonstationary state’s initial condition and early-time evolution, retained in an appropriate infinite-time behavior. The 2026 framework attributes the signal to a universal symmetry-constrained part and a revival part tied to early dynamics.
How is a quantum scar different from a quantum birthmark?
A scar is a structured enhancement in an individual eigenstate, associated with an unstable periodic orbit in the classical counterpart. A birthmark is a time-domain memory effect for an evolving, nonstationary state. One is primarily an eigenstate pattern; the other is a long-time consequence of preparation and dynamics.
Can a quantum scar enhance a quantum birthmark?
Yes. The stadium-billiard calculation in the 2026 paper reports significant enhancement of the birthmark by quantum scars. That result demonstrates compatibility and interaction in that model, not a rule that all birthmarks must be scar-driven.
How to state the distinction accurately
A precise one-sentence explanation is: Quantum scars are orbit-associated structures in individual chaotic-system eigenstates, whereas quantum birthmarks are proposed long-time memories of a nonstationary state’s preparation and early evolution; in some models, the former can strengthen the latter.
That wording preserves the essential scope. It identifies the scar’s classical reference, the birthmark’s time-domain character, and the conditional nature of their connection without implying that either phenomenon has a broader experimental status than the evidence supports.
