The cheapest documented direct alternative to QQQM is QNDX, with a 0.10% gross and net expense ratio, but it launched only on June 23, 2026. QQQM remains a 0.15% Nasdaq-100 fund with an established operating history. QQQ costs 0.18% and may suit active traders. VTI and VOO cost 0.03%, but they track broader or different large-cap indexes and are not exact Nasdaq-100 substitutes.
The right choice depends on the exposure you need: a focused Nasdaq-100 growth tilt, a broad U.S. equity core, or a trading vehicle with a long market history. The tables and decision steps below separate those choices instead of treating every low-fee ETF as interchangeable.
Quick answer: which QQQM alternative fits your goal?
- Same Nasdaq-100 exposure at the lowest documented fee: QNDX, at 0.10% gross and net, provided you are comfortable evaluating a fund that began trading on June 23, 2026.
- Buy-and-hold Nasdaq-100 exposure with a longer operating record: QQQM, at a 0.15% total expense ratio.
- Frequent trading or options-oriented implementation: QQQ may be worth examining because of its long-established market presence, although its expense ratio is 0.18% after a December 2025 reclassification.
- Broadest U.S. stock-market core: VTI, which seeks the Morningstar US Total Market Index and represents approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market, with a 0.03% expense ratio.
- Large-cap U.S. core: VOO, also at 0.03%, but based on a large-capitalization-stock benchmark rather than the Nasdaq-100.
QQQM and QNDX are direct index alternatives. VTI and VOO answer a different portfolio question: how to own a wider or more traditional large-cap slice of the U.S. market.

What makes an ETF a true QQQM alternative?
QQQM is based on the Nasdaq-100 Index. A true substitute therefore needs to track that same index, or provide a clearly equivalent exposure under a different structure. QNDX and QQQ meet that test. Their fees and trading characteristics differ, but the intended index exposure is the same.
The Nasdaq-100 is a concentrated large-capitalization group of non-financial companies listed on a U.S. exchange. That focus creates a growth-oriented portfolio with less exposure to smaller companies and financial companies than a total-market fund. It also means a Nasdaq-100 ETF can overlap heavily with other portfolios that already own the largest U.S. technology, communications and consumer companies.
VTI and VOO should not be labeled exact replacements. VTI seeks the Morningstar US Total Market Index, which Vanguard says represents approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market. Its holdings span large-, mid-, small- and micro-cap stocks. VOO tracks a large-capitalization-stock benchmark. Both can be sensible core holdings, but neither is designed to replicate the Nasdaq-100.

What QNDX tracks
State Street Investment Management’s key-information sheet says QNDX tracks the Nasdaq-100 Index. The SEC summary prospectus describes the objective as providing, before fees and expenses, results that generally correspond to an index tracking large-capitalization equity securities of non-financial companies listed on a U.S. exchange. That objective makes QNDX a direct Nasdaq-100 competitor to QQQM and QQQ.
Why the 0.10% fee matters
QNDX reports a 0.10% gross and net expense ratio, below QQQM’s 0.15% and QQQ’s 0.18%. If all three funds had the same assets and identical pre-fee performance, the lower ratio would leave slightly more of the index return with the investor. In practice, realized results also reflect trading costs, portfolio implementation, cash management, securities lending, taxes and tracking difference.
The new-fund qualification
QNDX launched on June 23, 2026. As of the current date, that is a short live record compared with a long-established ETF. A lower stated expense ratio does not by itself prove tighter spreads, deeper liquidity, better tracking or easier execution. Review those characteristics in your own brokerage account before switching.

Checks to perform before buying QNDX
- Open the fund’s current prospectus and verify that the objective and expense ratio are still current.
- Look at the live bid-ask spread during the hours you expect to trade. A spread is an immediate trading cost and can matter more than a few basis points of annual expenses for small or frequent orders.
- Check trading volume and assets. A new fund may have less accumulated market activity than an older competitor, and the figures can change quickly.
- Confirm whether your account supports the order types, recurring purchases and fractional shares you want to use.
- If you trade options, verify that an options chain is actually available and sufficiently active for your strategy; availability is not guaranteed merely because an ETF exists.
- Compare the fund’s published performance with the index after expenses once a meaningful history is available. Early observations may not establish a long-term tracking pattern.
QQQM: the established buy-and-hold Nasdaq-100 option
Invesco states that the Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF is based on the NASDAQ-100 Index. Its 0.15% total expense ratio is higher than QNDX’s documented 0.10% and lower than QQQ’s 0.18% figure. For an investor who wants a targeted Nasdaq-100 position and is not selecting a fund primarily for intraday trading, QQQM is the straightforward middle option in this comparison.
The fee difference is measurable but modest. On a constant $10,000 balance, a 0.15% expense ratio corresponds to approximately $15 per year before compounding, taxes and other costs. That is an illustration of the stated ratio, not a guarantee of the amount deducted from a particular account. The actual dollar impact changes with the account value and fund expenses.
QQQM still carries the concentration and index limitations of the Nasdaq-100. It is not a complete U.S. market portfolio, and adding it to another fund that already owns the largest Nasdaq-listed companies can increase the same exposures rather than diversify them.
QQQ: when implementation may matter more than the fee
Invesco reported that QQQ’s reclassification reduced its expense ratio to 0.18% in December 2025 while preserving access to the Nasdaq-100. That makes QQQ the most expensive of the three directly comparable funds in this set on the documented ratios.
Its potential rationale is implementation rather than cost. QQQ has a long-established market presence, which may matter to active traders who care about a mature trading record, regularly observed spreads, substantial volume or an established options market. Those characteristics should be checked with current market data, not assumed from the ticker alone.
For a long-term investor making occasional purchases, paying 0.18% instead of 0.15% may be difficult to justify solely on fees. For a trader whose execution costs, order handling and options access dominate annual fund expenses, the cheapest expense ratio may not produce the cheapest overall experience. The correct comparison depends on how you trade.

VTI: the broad-market alternative, not a Nasdaq-100 clone
What VTI owns
Vanguard says VTI seeks to track the Morningstar US Total Market Index, representing approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market. That broad mandate includes large-, mid-, small- and micro-cap companies, rather than only large non-financial Nasdaq-listed companies.
Why its 0.03% fee is not an apples-to-apples comparison
VTI’s 0.03% expense ratio is lower than the documented ratios for QNDX, QQQM and QQQ. The lower cost accompanies a different index objective. VTI is designed as a broad U.S. equity core, not as a concentrated growth tilt. Choosing it instead of QQQM changes both diversification and the types of companies that drive returns.
On a constant $10,000 balance, 0.03% corresponds to approximately $3 per year before compounding, taxes and other costs. That arithmetic helps illustrate the fee difference, but it does not predict returns. A broad-market fund can outperform or underperform a Nasdaq-100 fund over any period because its holdings and weights differ.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When VTI is the better answer
- You want one fund covering nearly the entire investable U.S. stock market.
- You want meaningful exposure to smaller companies that a Nasdaq-100 fund omits.
- You are building a core holding and do not need a dedicated Nasdaq-100 tilt.
- You prefer to add a separate, smaller growth tilt only if your risk tolerance, time horizon and tax circumstances support it.
VOO: a large-cap core with a different construction
VOO tracks a large-capitalization-stock benchmark and reports a 0.03% expense ratio from Vanguard. It is broader than the Nasdaq-100 in sector and exchange composition, but narrower than VTI because it focuses on large-cap stocks.
VOO and QQQM can overlap substantially in their biggest holdings, yet they are not the same strategy. VOO’s benchmark is a large-cap U.S. universe; QQQM’s benchmark is the Nasdaq-100’s large non-financial companies listed on a U.S. exchange. The differences in eligibility and sector representation can produce different results even when both funds contain familiar mega-cap companies.
Use VOO when the desired role is large-cap U.S. core exposure. Use QQQM or QNDX when the desired role is a specific Nasdaq-100 allocation. Selecting VOO solely because its fee is lower ignores the change in index exposure.

How much do the stated fees cost?
| Expense ratio | Illustrative annual expense on $10,000 | Funds in this comparison |
|---|---|---|
| 0.03% | About $3 | VTI and VOO |
| 0.10% | About $10 | QNDX |
| 0.15% | About $15 | QQQM |
| 0.18% | About $18 | QQQ |
These are simple illustrations obtained by multiplying $10,000 by each stated ratio. They assume a constant balance and exclude brokerage commissions, bid-ask spreads, market impact, taxes and any difference between an ETF’s return and its index. Expense ratios are deducted inside the fund rather than billed as a separate invoice, and the dollar amount changes as assets change.

Choosing by portfolio role
Choose a direct Nasdaq-100 fund for a targeted growth tilt
QQQM and QNDX are the relevant choices when your objective is the Nasdaq-100 itself. QNDX has the lowest documented ratio, while QQQM offers a 0.15% ratio and an established alternative to QQQ. Neither should automatically become the whole portfolio: both concentrate on a large-cap, non-financial segment of the U.S. market.
Choose VTI for a broad U.S. foundation
VTI is the clearest fit when diversification across virtually the full investable U.S. equity market is the priority. It can serve as a core holding without requiring a separate small- or mid-cap fund to fill the basic U.S. market range, although every investor should evaluate international exposure and risk separately.
Choose VOO for a large-cap foundation
VOO fits investors who specifically want large-cap U.S. stocks at a 0.03% expense ratio. It is not a direct Nasdaq-100 substitute, even if some of its largest holdings overlap with Nasdaq-100 funds.
Combine a core and a tilt only deliberately
A broad core plus a smaller Nasdaq-100 position can be a reasonable structure, but the appropriate allocation depends on your risk tolerance, investment horizon, income needs, tax situation and existing holdings. Because the funds can share major companies, adding QQQM or QNDX may increase concentration more than expected. Decide what exposure you are trying to add, then inspect holdings and weights rather than relying on fund names.

- Confirm the exact ticker. Search for QNDX, QQQM, QQQ, VTI or VOO and read the fund name before submitting an order. Similar ticker symbols can represent unrelated securities.
- Read the current fund documents. Verify the expense ratio, index objective, distributions and risks in the current prospectus or fact sheet.
- Inspect the live quote. Compare the displayed bid and ask, recent volume and the spread at the time you intend to trade.
- Select an order type deliberately. A market order prioritizes execution but does not guarantee a price. A limit order sets a maximum purchase price or minimum sale price but may not execute.
- Check fractional and recurring rules. If you invest a fixed dollar amount, confirm whether the account permits fractional ETF shares and whether recurring purchases use market or limit orders.
- Review the confirmation. Check the executed price, quantity, commissions if any, and settlement information. Keep records for taxable accounts.
For QQQ, an active trader may investigate options availability and execution quality in addition to the 0.18% fee. For newly launched QNDX, the same checks are especially important because a short live history cannot establish long-term liquidity or tracking behavior.
Risks and trade-offs to evaluate
Concentration risk
Nasdaq-100 funds focus on a limited large-cap, non-financial universe. A handful of very large companies can have a substantial effect on the fund’s result. A broad fund such as VTI spreads exposure across more companies and capitalization sizes, although it still carries ordinary U.S. stock-market risk.
Index mismatch
Replacing QQQM with VTI or VOO changes the benchmark. That may be exactly what you want, but it makes performance comparisons to the Nasdaq-100 less meaningful. Compare each fund with the index it is designed to track.
The Tool Desk

Expense ratio is only one component of implementation. Trading costs, portfolio management, cash balances and other operational effects can cause an ETF’s return to differ from its index. Review realized tracking once enough data exists instead of assuming the lowest fee will always produce the closest result.
Liquidity and execution
Fund assets, volume and spreads vary by time of day and market conditions. A lower annual fee can be overwhelmed by an unnecessarily wide spread on a large purchase or sale. Use limit orders when appropriate and verify the live market rather than relying on a static comparison.
Tax and account context
ETF distributions and realized gains interact with your account type, holding period and local tax rules. The same fund can have different after-tax results in a taxable account and a tax-advantaged account. Review the current tax treatment with a qualified professional before making a large change.
Common mistakes when replacing QQQM
- Calling VTI or VOO an exact substitute: their indexes are broader or otherwise different.
- Choosing QNDX solely for 0.10%: the June 23, 2026 launch date means liquidity, assets, spreads and operational history still need review.
- Assuming QQQ is always cheaper after its reclassification: the reported December 2025 ratio is 0.18%, above QQQM’s 0.15% and QNDX’s 0.10%.
- Ignoring overlap: adding a Nasdaq-100 fund to a broad or large-cap fund can increase exposure to the same biggest companies.
- Comparing returns without matching benchmarks: a total-market fund and a Nasdaq-100 fund have different jobs and should not be judged as identical products.
- Trading without checking the quote: spreads and execution conditions are current market facts, not permanent fund specifications.
- Concentrating a portfolio without a risk plan: decide how much volatility and drawdown you can tolerate before selecting a targeted growth tilt.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down the exposure you actually want: Nasdaq-100, total U.S. market or large-cap U.S. stocks.
- If it is Nasdaq-100, compare QNDX, QQQM and QQQ on current expense ratio, spread, volume, assets, options access and operating history.
- If it is a core holding, compare VTI and VOO based on breadth and capitalization range, not just their equal 0.03% stated fee.
- Estimate the annual expense using your expected balance, then compare it with likely trading costs and account features.
- Check overlap with funds you already own and identify whether the new purchase adds diversification or simply increases an existing concentration.
- Verify the current prospectus, quote and brokerage policies immediately before trading.
- Document why the fund belongs in the portfolio and what condition would cause you to reassess it.
Bottom line
QNDX is the lowest-fee direct Nasdaq-100 alternative documented here at 0.10%, but its June 23, 2026 launch makes due diligence on liquidity and history essential. QQQM remains the balanced buy-and-hold choice at 0.15%, while QQQ’s 0.18% ratio may be acceptable when an established trading implementation matters more than a small fee difference. VTI and VOO are cheaper at 0.03%, yet they are broad-market and large-cap alternatives, not Nasdaq-100 replicas. Choose the fund whose index and trading characteristics match the job you need it to perform.
