For most investors seeking one core U.S. stock ETF, SPY is the more balanced choice: it follows the broad, large-cap S&P 500 across all 11 GICS sectors and charges a 0.0945% expense ratio. QQQ is better understood as a concentrated growth and innovation tilt: it follows the Nasdaq-100, charges 0.18%, and has produced stronger cited historical returns, but with substantially greater technology and mega-cap exposure. You can own both, but QQQ generally changes the character of a SPY portfolio rather than adding fully independent diversification.

QQQ vs. SPY at a glance

The right choice depends on the job you want the ETF to perform. SPY is designed to be a broad U.S. large-cap foundation. QQQ is designed to give access to the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq, which creates a pronounced growth, technology and innovation bias.

Feature QQQ SPY
Underlying index Nasdaq-100 Index S&P 500 Index
Companies represented 100 largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq 503 holdings listed in State Street’s March 31, 2026 fact sheet
Sector design Concentrated in growth-oriented sectors; March 31, 2026 allocation was 59.8% technology and 21.2% consumer discretionary Diversified across all 11 GICS sectors
Expense ratio 0.18% 0.0945% gross/net ratio reported by State Street
Illustrative annual cost on $10,000 Approximately $18.00 before compounding, trading costs, taxes and account fees Approximately $9.45 before compounding, trading costs, taxes and account fees
Recent cited performance context 10-year annualized NAV return of 18.98% as of March 31, 2026; beat the S&P 500 in seven of the 10 years through June 30, 2026 No equivalent performance figure is supplied here

Those figures are not a forecast or a promise. They describe different index designs and historical periods, and the higher-returning design can also experience deeper declines when growth stocks are repriced.

What QQQ owns and tracks

The Nasdaq-100 focus

QQQ is an exchange-traded fund from Invesco based on the Nasdaq-100 Index. That index contains the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. Because financial companies are excluded and membership is determined within one exchange, QQQ does not represent the whole U.S. stock market or even the whole large-cap market.

The construction naturally emphasizes companies associated with technology, communications, consumer platforms and other growth industries. Invesco describes QQQ as providing exposure to companies at the forefront of innovation across a diverse range of sectors and industries. “Diverse” in that description does not mean evenly weighted: the March 31, 2026 allocation table shows 59.8% in technology and 21.2% in consumer discretionary.

What that means in a portfolio

A QQQ holding gives you a deliberate bet on the earnings growth, valuation and competitive durability of large Nasdaq-listed innovators. It can complement a portfolio that is light in those areas, but it can also duplicate exposure you already have through a broad U.S. fund, an employer stock plan or individual technology holdings. The index’s exclusion of financial companies and its concentration in a relatively small group of very large firms are structural characteristics, not temporary flaws.

What SPY owns and tracks

The S&P 500 foundation

SPY seeks to track the S&P 500 Index. State Street describes the index as a diversified large-cap U.S. index holding companies across all 11 GICS sectors. Its March 31, 2026 fact sheet lists 503 holdings. SPY launched on January 22, 1993.

Owning SPY therefore spreads your exposure among technology, health care, financials, consumer sectors, industrials, energy, utilities, real estate, materials, communication services and other S&P 500 classifications. The fund remains U.S.-large-cap focused; it is not a complete substitute for international, small-cap or bond exposure. Its breadth does, however, reduce dependence on one sector or one industry narrative compared with QQQ.

Why benchmark breadth matters

SPY’s broader opportunity set means weaker performance in one sector can be offset by strength elsewhere. That does not eliminate market risk: all 503 holdings are stocks and can fall together during a broad sell-off. It does make the result less dependent on the valuation of technology and consumer-discretionary mega-caps than a QQQ allocation.

Fees: SPY is the lower-cost fund

Invesco reports a 0.18% total expense ratio for QQQ. State Street reports a 0.0945% gross/net expense ratio for SPY. On a constant $10,000 balance, multiplying those stated percentages by the balance produces approximately $18.00 per year for QQQ and $9.45 for SPY.

Balance QQQ at 0.18% SPY at 0.0945%
$10,000 $18.00 per year $9.45 per year
$50,000 $90.00 per year $47.25 per year
$100,000 $180.00 per year $94.50 per year

The examples are arithmetic from the published ratios, not quoted account bills. Actual dollar impact varies as the balance changes and can be affected by compounding, bid-ask spreads, commissions, taxes and other account charges. A lower fee is valuable, but it should not by itself decide between a broad-market role and a concentrated growth role.

Diversification, concentration and overlap

SPY spreads risk across sectors

SPY’s all-sector design is the stronger fit when your priority is one broadly diversified U.S. large-cap holding. Its 503 holdings and 11-sector coverage reduce the chance that one industry dominates the outcome. The fund still has large-company concentration because it follows a large-cap index, and its largest positions can influence returns substantially, but its risk sources are broader than QQQ’s.

QQQ concentrates in technology and consumer discretionary

QQQ’s March 31, 2026 allocation of 59.8% technology and 21.2% consumer discretionary means roughly four-fifths of the fund was in those two sectors at that date. The exact weights move over time, but the concentration is central to the product’s identity. A reversal in technology valuations, weaker demand for discretionary products or a market preference for cheaper value-oriented shares can hurt QQQ more than SPY.

Why owning both is not automatic diversification

Both indexes include many of the same large U.S. companies. Adding QQQ to SPY therefore tends to increase your exposure to overlapping mega-cap growth names and technology rather than adding an independent asset class. The amount of overlap changes with index reconstitutions, market values and weighting rules, so do not rely on a static percentage found in an old comparison.

To measure the effect in your own portfolio, use holdings files dated as closely together as possible:

  1. Download the current holdings and portfolio weights for both funds from their issuers.
  2. Normalize company names and tickers so the same issuer is counted once.
  3. Identify securities held by both funds and add each fund’s weight for every shared company.
  4. Multiply each fund weight by the percentage of your portfolio invested in that fund.
  5. Add the resulting company and sector exposures to any employer stock, individual shares or other index funds you own.

This calculation tells you whether a proposed QQQ allocation is a modest tilt or an unintended concentration. Re-run it after major index or portfolio changes.

Historical performance: useful context, not a forecast

Invesco reports that QQQ beat the S&P 500 in seven of the 10 years through June 30, 2026. Its March 31, 2026 factsheet reports a 10-year annualized NAV return of 18.98%. Those figures help explain why investors are attracted to QQQ, but they do not establish what either ETF will earn next.

Invesco’s own disclosure is explicit: “Past performance is not a guarantee of future results; current performance may be higher or lower than performance quoted.” Growth-heavy portfolios can suffer larger drawdowns and longer stretches of underperformance when expensive technology and growth shares fall out of favor, interest rates rise or investors rotate toward value and defensive sectors.

When comparing a chart, check that the dates, return type and reinvestment assumptions match. NAV return, market-price return and total return are not interchangeable. A single decade that favored large growth companies can make QQQ look universally superior even though the result reflects a particular valuation and economic regime.

Which ETF is better for your objective?

Choose SPY as a core U.S. holding

SPY is the practical default when you want one large-cap U.S. equity fund, broad sector coverage and the lower ongoing fee. It can serve investors who prefer a simpler allocation, who do not want to make a sector call, or who are building a foundation before adding international stocks, smaller companies, bonds or cash.

  • You want exposure across all 11 GICS sectors rather than a technology-led portfolio.
  • You value the lower 0.0945% expense ratio.
  • You are uncomfortable with a single sector representing most of an ETF.
  • You want your growth allocation to come from the whole S&P 500 instead of a Nasdaq-specific screen.

Choose QQQ as a growth satellite or tilt

QQQ fits when you intentionally want Nasdaq-100 exposure and accept the associated concentration. It can be a satellite around a diversified core, provided the position size matches your ability to tolerate larger swings and the possibility of a long period in which it trails SPY.

  • You want a high-growth and innovation tilt rather than neutral large-cap exposure.
  • You understand that 59.8% technology and 21.2% consumer discretionary were reported for March 31, 2026 and that weights change.
  • You can remain invested through valuation-driven drawdowns.
  • You have checked that existing funds and employer holdings do not already create the same exposure.

Use neither as your only diversified portfolio

SPY and QQQ are U.S. large-cap equity funds. Neither one supplies dedicated international stocks, small-cap stocks, bonds or a cash reserve. If your goal is a complete asset-allocation portfolio, decide how those other exposures fit before treating either ETF as the entire solution.

Should you hold QQQ and SPY together?

Holding both can be sensible when you want SPY’s broad base plus a measured growth overweight. It is not automatically sensible when you believe two ticker symbols mean two independent portfolios. Shared holdings can make the combined result much more technology- and mega-cap-heavy than SPY alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a target role for each fund before buying. For example, designate SPY as the core and QQQ as a capped satellite, then write down the maximum combined exposure you will accept to technology, consumer discretionary and any single company. Use new contributions or scheduled rebalancing to return to those limits instead of changing the plan after a sharp rally or decline.

Review the plan when your circumstances change: a new employer plan, a large individual-stock position, a shorter time horizon, a change in risk tolerance or a need to fund a near-term expense can all make the same ETF mix inappropriate. Rebalancing may create taxable transactions in a taxable account, so include tax consequences in the decision rather than treating them as an afterthought.

Income, taxes and implementation details

Do not infer dividend income from the growth story

The available issuer passages do not provide synchronized current dividend-yield figures for QQQ and SPY. An income comparison requires same-date data, such as each issuer’s 30-day SEC yield or trailing distribution yield, with the methodology and date labeled. Do not present a yield from one date or calculation method beside a different measure for the other fund.

Account and trading considerations

You need a securities account that supports ETF trading. Before placing an order, check the account type, tax treatment, bid-ask spread, order type and any platform charge. The expense ratios are ongoing fund expenses; they do not include taxes or the cost of trading.

In a taxable account, selling to rebalance can realize gains or losses. In a retirement account, the tax mechanics differ, but contribution limits and withdrawal rules still matter. The suitable fund can therefore depend on where it sits in your overall account structure, not just on its index or fee.

Time horizon and risk capacity

Both ETFs hold equities and can lose significant value. A long time horizon may make it easier to tolerate volatility, but it does not make QQQ’s concentration disappear. Match the allocation to the date you need the money and to your ability to keep contributing during a downturn. Money needed soon should not be assigned to an equity tilt merely because its historical return was higher.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Define the role. Write “core U.S. large-cap,” “growth satellite” or another specific purpose next to the ETF.
  2. Map existing exposure. Include workplace retirement funds, individual shares and other ETFs before deciding that QQQ adds diversification.
  3. Compare the fee. Use 0.18% for QQQ and 0.0945% for SPY, then consider trading, tax and account costs.
  4. Test concentration. Calculate combined company and sector weights from synchronized holdings data.
  5. Set a rebalancing rule. Choose a calendar or an allowable percentage band and record it before markets move.
  6. Stress-test your behavior. Ask whether you could continue the plan through a growth-stock drawdown and an extended period of QQQ trailing SPY.
  7. Verify current facts. Check each issuer’s latest fact sheet, expense ratio, holdings and yield methodology before trading because weights and disclosures change.

Bottom line

SPY is usually the better single core ETF because it combines broad exposure across all 11 GICS sectors with a 0.0945% expense ratio. QQQ is the better tool when you deliberately want a Nasdaq-100 growth and innovation tilt and accept its 0.18% fee, technology and consumer-discretionary concentration, and potentially larger drawdowns. Owning both can work, but only after you measure the overlap and set a total portfolio exposure that matches your risk tolerance and time horizon.
