Short answer: The lowest stated costs among the direct Nasdaq-100 trackers covered here are QNDX and IQQ at 0.10% net expenses. QQQM is the closest established lower-fee substitute for QQQ, charging 0.15% versus QQQ’s 0.18%. QQQ remains the more mature trading vehicle, while QQQE is not a like-for-like replacement because it equal-weights Nasdaq-100 companies instead of using the index’s modified market-cap weighting.
The right choice depends on more than the expense ratio. Compare the index each fund follows, gross versus net fees, tracking difference, bid-ask spreads, assets, options access, share price, fractional-share support, fund age and tax implementation before changing positions.
QQQ alternatives at a glance
QQQ is the reference product for Nasdaq-100 exposure. It is a passively managed exchange-traded fund that tracks the Nasdaq-100 Index, a modified market-capitalization index of 100 large non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. Invesco lists a 0.18% total expense ratio for QQQ.
| ETF | Index approach | Stated expenses | Inception or maturity note | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QQQ | Nasdaq-100, modified market-cap weighted | 0.18% total expense ratio | Established fund with a mature trading and options ecosystem | Frequent traders and investors who value deep liquidity |
| QQQM | Nasdaq-100, same market-capitalization exposure as QQQ | 0.15% total expense ratio | Established lower-fee alternative | Long-term, buy-and-hold investors seeking the closest QQQ substitute |
| QNDX | Seeks to match the Nasdaq-100 before fees and expenses | 0.10% gross and 0.10% net | Inception June 23, 2026; very new as of October 2026 | Cost-first investors willing to evaluate a new fund |
| IQQ | Seeks to track an index of the largest non-financial Nasdaq-listed companies by market capitalization | 0.12% gross and 0.10% net | Launched July 8, 2026; very new as of October 2026 | Investors prioritizing a low net fee and accessible share price |
| QQQE | Nasdaq-100 Equal Weighted Index | Not stated in the supplied product facts | Different weighting methodology, not a pure fee substitute | Investors specifically seeking less mega-cap concentration |
The 0.10% figures for QNDX and IQQ are the lowest stated net expenses in this comparison. IQQ’s gross expense is 0.12%, with the 0.10% net figure reflecting a waiver or contractual expense limitation; check the current prospectus for the terms and expiration of that arrangement. QNDX lists the same 0.10% figure on both a gross and net basis.

What makes an alternative a true QQQ replacement?
A lower fee alone does not guarantee similar results. A replacement should first provide the same benchmark exposure. QQQ, QQQM and QNDX are described as tracking the Nasdaq-100 or seeking to match it before fees and expenses. IQQ also seeks the Nasdaq-100 exposure described as the largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq by market capitalization.
The Nasdaq-100 is not the entire Nasdaq exchange. It excludes financial companies and uses modified market-cap weighting, so the largest constituents have much more influence than smaller members. Two funds can both be labelled “Nasdaq-100” products and still produce different investor outcomes if one uses equal weighting, sampling, derivatives or another implementation method.
Market-cap weighting versus equal weighting
QQQE follows the Nasdaq-100 Equal Weighted Index. Equal weighting gives each constituent a similar target influence rather than allowing the biggest companies to dominate. That can reduce dependence on a handful of mega-cap holdings, but it also requires more frequent rebalancing and can create different sector, style and turnover effects.

How much do the fees actually save?
Expense ratios are annual fund expenses deducted from assets; they are not normally billed as a separate invoice. On a $10,000 holding, a simple calculation using the stated ratios gives approximately $18 per year for QQQ, $15 for QQQM and $10 for a fund charging 0.10%. The actual dollar impact changes as the account value changes, and returns, trading costs and tracking differences matter as well.
| Holding value | QQQ at 0.18% | QQQM at 0.15% | 0.10% fund such as QNDX or IQQ net |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | About $18 per year | About $15 per year | About $10 per year |
| $50,000 | About $90 per year | About $75 per year | About $50 per year |
| $100,000 | About $180 per year | About $150 per year | About $100 per year |
These are illustrations obtained by multiplying the holding value by the published percentage. They exclude commissions, bid-ask spread costs, taxes and any difference between a fund’s return and the index. The fee gap between QQQ and QQQM is 0.03 percentage points; the gap between QQQ and a 0.10% fund is 0.08 percentage points. For a small account, one wide spread or a poorly timed trade can exceed a year of fee savings.
Fund-by-fund analysis
QQQ: the mature trading benchmark
QQQ’s 0.18% total expense ratio is the highest among the direct market-cap-weighted choices listed here. Its justification is operational rather than cost-based: it is the established reference vehicle for Nasdaq-100 trading, with a mature market, broad recognition and an established options ecosystem.

That maturity can matter when entering or exiting a large position, trading around news, using limit orders or implementing options strategies. Current bid-ask spreads, assets, average volume and option-chain liquidity still vary by market conditions, so check live data rather than assuming any historical ranking remains unchanged.
QQQ is generally the most natural choice for an investor whose priority is trading flexibility and whose account is large enough that execution quality matters more than a few basis points of annual expenses.
QQQM: the closest established lower-fee substitute
QQQM charges a 0.15% total expense ratio and is described by Invesco as providing the same Nasdaq-100 exposure as QQQ for long-term, buy-and-hold investors. It preserves the benchmark’s modified market-cap methodology while reducing the stated annual fee by 0.03 percentage points.
For a retirement account or taxable account where you expect to make periodic purchases and hold for years, QQQM is the straightforward first alternative to investigate. The lower fee compounds over time, but the benefit should be weighed against the fund’s current spread, assets, trading volume and options availability at your broker.

QQQM is not automatically better for every order. If you trade frequently, compare the actual execution cost of the two funds. A lower expense ratio can be offset by a wider spread on a particular order, especially outside regular market hours.
QNDX: the lowest stated gross and net fee
State Street describes QNDX as seeking to provide results that, before fees and expenses, correspond generally to the total return performance of the Nasdaq-100 Index. Its key information sheet lists a 0.10% gross and 0.10% net expense ratio.
QNDX began on June 23, 2026. That makes it a new fund as of October 2026, with a shorter operating history than QQQ or QQQM. The low stated fee is attractive for a long holding period, but investors should examine assets, spreads, creation and redemption activity, tracking difference and trading volume as those figures develop.

New-fund risks are practical rather than theoretical. A fund may have fewer market makers, a smaller asset base, less established options coverage or a greater possibility of being merged or closed if it does not attract sufficient assets. None of those outcomes is established for QNDX; they are reasons to monitor the fund’s operating history instead of treating the 0.10% fee as the only decision factor.

iShares reports that IQQ seeks to track an index of the largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq by market capitalization. It launched on July 8, 2026 and lists 0.12% gross expenses and 0.10% net expenses.
The net fee places IQQ alongside QNDX as the lowest-cost direct Nasdaq-100 option in this comparison. The distinction between gross and net matters: the 0.10% figure may depend on an expense limitation or waiver. Read the current prospectus and shareholder documents to determine how long that arrangement lasts and what happens when it expires.
iShares positions IQQ as having an accessible share price. The exact price is not stated here and will change with the market. Fractional-share availability is set by the brokerage, not by the ETF name, so confirm whether your account supports fractional purchases before relying on share price as a budgeting advantage.
QQQE: an equal-weight strategy, not a cheaper clone
QQQE follows the Nasdaq-100 Equal Weighted Index. Because each holding receives a more balanced target weight, the fund can reduce the portfolio’s dependence on the largest companies. That may appeal to an investor who believes concentration risk is more important than matching QQQ’s exact return pattern.

QQQE will not be expected to track the same performance as QQQ, even before fees. Its sector weights, turnover, rebalancing needs and sensitivity to smaller constituents differ. The supplied product facts do not state QQQE’s expense ratio, so it cannot be ranked on cost against the other funds here.
Which ETF fits which investor?
For a long-term investor seeking the closest substitute
Start with QQQM. It has the same Nasdaq-100 objective described for QQQ and a lower 0.15% total expense ratio. Then compare QQQM with QNDX and IQQ using current spread, assets, tracking difference and operating history. Moving to a newer 0.10% fund can reduce ongoing expenses, but the fee advantage should be large enough to justify any execution or operational uncertainty in your account.

For a cost-first investor
QNDX and IQQ have the lowest stated net expenses at 0.10%. QNDX also lists 0.10% gross expenses, while IQQ lists 0.12% gross and 0.10% net. Confirm the current fee waiver terms for IQQ and check live trading data for both funds. A cost-first decision should use the net expense ratio only after you understand how durable it is.
For an active trader or options user
QQQ may remain preferable because of its mature trading and options ecosystem. Compare real-time bid-ask spreads, displayed depth, average daily volume and option-chain open interest for the specific order size and expiration you use. QNDX and IQQ are recent launches, so their trading infrastructure and options coverage may not yet match QQQ.
For an investor concerned about mega-cap concentration
QQQE addresses a different problem. It changes the weighting scheme rather than lowering the price of Nasdaq-100 exposure. Choose it only if you intentionally want equal weighting and accept performance that can diverge materially from market-cap-weighted QQQ, QQQM, QNDX and IQQ.
How to compare tracking quality before switching
The expense ratio is a stated cost, not a promise of superior performance. Use the following checks for each candidate:
- Read the index objective. Confirm whether the fund tracks the Nasdaq-100 itself, seeks to match it before fees, or follows an equal-weight version.
- Check gross and net expenses. Record both numbers and read the prospectus for waivers, reimbursements and expiration dates.
- Measure tracking difference. Compare the fund’s total return with the index over the same period. The gap reflects fees, trading costs, cash drag, sampling, corporate actions and implementation decisions.
- Review spread and depth. Use a limit order and inspect the current bid-ask spread. Look at more than the quoted spread if your order is large; displayed depth and market impact also matter.
- Review assets and volume. A newer or smaller fund can still trade well, but lower assets and volume may increase execution risk. Use current figures because they change daily.
- Check creation, redemption and holdings information. Confirm how closely the published holdings and weights resemble the benchmark and how often the portfolio is rebalanced.
- Confirm options availability if needed. Do not assume that an ETF with the same index has the same strikes, expirations, open interest or trading spreads as QQQ.
No current assets, spread measurements, tracking differences or options statistics are stated for QNDX or IQQ in the available product facts. Those are publication-date checks, not figures to infer from the expense ratio.

- Whether fractional purchases are supported for the specific ETF.
- Whether fractional shares can be sold or transferred.
- Whether limit orders are available for fractional quantities.
- How dividends and distributions are handled for fractional holdings.
- Whether recurring investment plans use market orders or another execution method.
For whole-share orders, use a limit order when the spread or market volatility is material. Avoid judging a fund solely by its last-traded price; execution quality and the size of your order are more relevant.
Tax and account implementation questions
The funds in this comparison are exchange-traded products, but the supplied facts do not establish a single tax treatment for every investor, jurisdiction or account type. Tax results depend on where you reside, the account wrapper, holding period, distributions and any sale of your existing QQQ position.
Before replacing an existing position, determine whether selling would realize a capital gain or loss, whether a transfer in kind is possible, and whether your account imposes transaction or conversion costs. In a taxable account, a lower annual fee does not by itself justify realizing a large taxable gain. In a tax-advantaged account, the trade-off may be different, but account-specific rules still apply.

Common mistakes when choosing a lower-fee QQQ alternative
Mistaking equal weighting for a discount
QQQE may have a different risk profile because of its index methodology. A lower or higher fee would not change that distinction. Compare the portfolio construction first, then compare cost among funds with genuinely similar objectives.
Using the net fee without reading the waiver
IQQ’s 0.10% net expense ratio is accompanied by a 0.12% gross figure. If the waiver expires or changes, the investor’s ongoing cost could rise. Record the waiver terms and review future filings.
Ignoring trading costs
One purchase with a wide spread can cost more than several months of a 0.03- or 0.08-percentage-point expense difference. Trade during liquid market hours, use limit orders when appropriate and compare the actual spread for your order.
Assuming a new fund has a proven record
QNDX began June 23, 2026 and IQQ launched July 8, 2026. Neither has the long operating history of QQQ. Early assets, spreads and tracking results can change quickly as investors and market makers adopt the products.
Changing funds solely for a headline fee
Calculate the annual dollar saving on your actual balance, then compare it with taxes, commissions, spread costs and any loss of options flexibility. The cheapest percentage is not always the cheapest complete implementation.
A practical switching checklist
- Write down your objective: exact Nasdaq-100 exposure, lower fees, better trading, or lower mega-cap concentration.
- Eliminate funds whose index methodology does not match that objective. In particular, treat QQQE separately from direct Nasdaq-100 trackers.
- Compare gross and net expense ratios and document any waiver or reimbursement.
- Check current assets, average volume, bid-ask spread, tracking difference and options availability.
- Estimate annual fee savings using your expected account balance.
- Estimate taxes and trading costs for selling or exchanging an existing position.
- Confirm fractional-share support, limit-order functionality and recurring-investment rules at your brokerage.
- Read the current prospectus and fund documents before placing the order.
- Place the trade with an execution method appropriate to the spread, order size and market conditions.
- Recheck the fund’s fee, waiver, tracking and liquidity data periodically; a newer ETF’s profile can change materially.
Bottom line
For most long-term investors who want the closest established QQQ replacement, QQQM is the logical starting point: it follows the same Nasdaq-100 exposure and charges 0.15% instead of QQQ’s 0.18%. QNDX and IQQ offer the lowest stated net fees at 0.10%, but both launched in 2026 and deserve a current review of spreads, assets, tracking and operating history before purchase. QQQ remains defensible for investors who value its mature trading and options ecosystem. QQQE belongs in a separate decision because equal weighting changes the portfolio, not merely the price.
