Qi2 is the Wireless Power Consortium’s second-generation wireless-charging standard. Its Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) uses a ring of magnets to center a phone on the charging coil, improving alignment and helping compatible devices charge more consistently. Original Qi2 launched at up to 15 watts in 2023; the Qi v2.2.1 specification, branded Qi2 25W, raises the ceiling to 25 watts on certified phones, chargers and power adapters.
A wattage printed on a charger is only its maximum capability. The phone’s charging profile, the charger’s certification, the case, the USB-C adapter and temperature controls determine the power actually delivered.
What Qi2 is—and what the Qi2 logo means
Qi2 is a specification maintained by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), the industry group behind the original Qi standard. WPC’s Qi v2.0 introduced two profiles:
- Magnetic Power Profile (MPP): the profile associated with the Qi2 logo. It is based on magnetic alignment technology contributed by Apple and uses magnets to position the transmitter and receiver coils.
- Extended Power Profile (EPP): an enhancement for non-magnetic products. EPP devices continue to use the regular Qi logo rather than the Qi2 logo.
That distinction matters when shopping. A product can support a newer Qi specification without having magnets. Look for the Qi2 logo and an MPP or Qi2 certification when magnetic attachment is important; a Qi-logo EPP product may provide improved charging behavior without snapping onto the phone.

WPC launched original Qi2 in November 2023 at 15 W. On July 23, 2025, it announced Qi v2.2.1, branded Qi2 25W. WPC says the new specification can deliver nearly 70% more power than original Qi2, but only when the phone, transmitter and power supply all support the 25 W profile.
Qi, Qi2 15W and Qi2 25W power levels
The generations below describe specification ceilings, not a promise that every phone will charge at that rate.
| Specification or product profile | Maximum cited power | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Qi 1.0 (2010) | 5 W | The original Qi version recorded by WPC. |
| Qi 1.2 (2015) | Up to 15 W | A later Qi capability; the phone and charger still had to support the relevant mode. |
| Original Qi2 (Qi v2.0, 2023) | 15 W | Magnetic Power Profile products use the Qi2 logo and magnetic alignment. |
| Qi v2.2/Qi v2.2.1, branded Qi2 25W (2025) | Up to 25 W | Available only on compatible, certified equipment; a Qi2 label alone does not establish 25 W support. |
| Apple’s general Qi charging baseline | Up to 7.5 W on many Qi-certified chargers | Apple’s support guidance for many iPhone and Qi-charger combinations; it is separate from the maximum advertised by a Qi2 transmitter. |
“Up to” is important because wireless charging is negotiated. A 25 W transmitter connected to an undersized adapter cannot produce 25 W, and a phone limited to 15 W will not become a 25 W phone when placed on a newer pad. The actual rate can also fall as the battery fills or the device heats.
How the magnets improve wireless charging
Wireless charging transfers energy across a small air gap between coils. The transmitter coil in the pad creates an alternating magnetic field; the receiver coil in the phone converts that field back into electrical power for the battery-management system. The coils work best when their centers overlap.

Without a positioning aid, a phone can rest several millimeters off-center. It may still charge, but the coupling is weaker, startup can be slower, and more energy can be lost as heat. MPP magnets pull the phone into the intended position and hold it there, so the coils remain aligned when the phone or stand is moved. Apple describes its MagSafe system in similar terms: magnetic alignment is intended to support faster, more efficient charging.
The magnets do not create additional power by themselves. They solve the placement problem. A phone still needs a receiver designed for the relevant Qi profile, and the transmitter still needs the correct certification and power input.
Why a “25 W” charger may charge more slowly
Charging power is the result of several limits, with the lowest one governing the session.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Phone profile: The handset may accept only standard Qi, Qi2 15 W or Qi2 25 W. Check the exact model rather than relying on a family name.
- Transmitter certification: A genuine Qi2 25W product is different from a generic pad that merely prints “25 W” on its packaging. Certification verifies that the design meets the WPC profile.
- USB-C adapter: The pad’s rating assumes an adapter capable of supplying the required voltage and current. Reusing a low-power phone adapter can cap the pad well below its advertised maximum.
- Case and alignment: A thick case, misplaced magnetic ring or non-approved accessory can increase the gap between coils or prevent the magnets from centering the phone.
- Temperature: Charging electronics reduce power when the phone, battery or transmitter becomes hot. Software can also pause or limit charging near the top of the battery range.
- Battery state: Power normally tapers as the battery approaches full charge, so a meter showing less than the headline wattage later in a session is expected.
For that reason, compare products by their certified Qi version, supported phone profile and included or recommended adapter—not by the largest number on the box.

Phone compatibility: iPhone, Android and cases
iPhone models
Apple documents Qi-certified wireless charging for iPhone 8 and later. Many Qi-certified chargers charge those phones at up to 7.5 W. Magnetic behavior is a separate question: an iPhone must have the appropriate magnetic hardware, or use an approved magnetic case or accessory, for an MPP charger to attach and align as intended.
An Apple MagSafe Charger uses magnetic alignment designed for compatible iPhone models. A Qi2 charger can provide the same style of attachment only when the phone or its case is an approved Qi2 MPP combination. Do not infer a particular wattage from the presence of a magnetic ring; verify the phone and charger specifications together.
Android phones
Android Qi2 support began appearing in late 2024 and is expanding. WPC has described “Qi2 Ready” phones and cases as approved combinations that can deliver the full magnetic experience when paired correctly. Some phones have built-in MPP magnets; others need a Qi2 Ready case to add the magnetic interface.

Compatibility can vary by regional model, carrier edition and case. A phone that accepts ordinary Qi power may not center on an MPP charger, and a magnetic case that physically sticks does not automatically prove that the phone-case combination is WPC-approved.

How to check a specific combination
- Write down the exact phone model number, not just the product family.
- Check the manufacturer’s specifications for Qi2, MPP or Qi2 Ready support.
- If the phone lacks built-in magnets, look for a case explicitly identified as a WPC Qi2 Ready case for that model.
- Confirm the charger’s certified Qi version and whether it is a 15 W Qi2 or 25 W Qi2 product.
- Verify the required USB-C adapter and cable ratings in the charger’s instructions.
- Search the exact model numbers in WPC’s certified-products database before buying.
Choosing a Qi2 charger
Start with the way you use the phone, then check the technical details. The following comparison covers the decisions that affect real-world compatibility.
| Charger type | Useful when | Checks before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Flat pad | You charge on a desk or bedside table and do not need to view the screen. | Qi2 MPP certification, phone wattage limit, foreign-object detection and required adapter. |
| Magnetic stand | You want the display visible for calls, navigation or notifications. | Stable alignment in portrait and landscape, hinge strength, ventilation and whether the stand’s listed power applies to your phone. |
| Travel or power-bank charger | You need wireless charging away from an outlet. | Battery capacity, USB-C input/output, heat management, magnetic strength and whether wireless output is reduced while the bank is recharging. |
| Multi-device station | You charge a phone, watch or earbuds in one location. | Separate certification for each charging surface, total adapter wattage and how power is shared when several devices charge. |
For a 25 W setup, all three links in the chain must qualify: a Qi2 25W-certified transmitter, a phone that supports the 25 W profile and a USB-C adapter that meets the manufacturer’s input requirement. If any one is rated lower, the system will negotiate a lower rate.
Safe setup and everyday use
- Install the correct adapter. Connect the manufacturer-recommended USB-C power adapter and cable to the charger. Avoid assuming that an old adapter can supply the required input.
- Clear the charging surface. Remove coins, keys and other metal objects. Keep payment cards, access badges and items containing magnetic strips or RFID chips away from the interface.
- Use a compatible case. For a magnetic connection, use the phone’s built-in MPP magnets or a case listed as Qi2 Ready for that exact model.
- Center the phone. Place the phone on the pad or let the magnetic ring pull it into position. Look for the phone’s charging indicator and any status light on the transmitter.
- Manage heat. Remove thick insulating layers if the manufacturer permits, keep vents clear and avoid charging in direct sun or inside a hot vehicle.
- Allow the session to taper. A lower rate near a full battery or after the phone warms up is a normal protective behavior, not necessarily a defective charger.
Apple warns that objects between the phone and charger can reduce performance and can damage magnetic strips or RFID chips. It also notes that software may limit charging above 80 percent when the battery is too warm.
Troubleshooting common Qi2 problems
The phone does not attach magnetically
- Confirm that the phone has MPP magnets or that the case is an approved Qi2 Ready model.
- Remove a second case, wallet attachment or metal plate that may block the magnetic ring.
- Check that the charger is MPP/Qi2 rather than a non-magnetic EPP product carrying only the Qi logo.
Charging starts and stops
- Move metal objects and cards away from the pad.
- Reseat the USB-C cable and use the specified power adapter.
- Recenter the phone and test without the case to identify an alignment problem.
- Let both devices cool before trying again; thermal protection can interrupt or reduce charging.
The phone charges, but never reaches the advertised wattage
- Check whether the phone supports 15 W or 25 W Qi2 rather than ordinary Qi.
- Verify that the charger is certified for the claimed Qi2 version; not every Qi2-labeled product is Qi2 25W.
- Confirm the adapter’s output and remember that power tapers as the battery fills.
- Test with the case removed and with the phone below roughly the final portion of its charge, when thermal and battery-management limits are less likely to dominate.
Where Qi2 stands now
Qi2 adoption has moved beyond the initial 15 W launch. WPC reported more than 1,100 certified Qi2 products within one year and more than 1.5 billion certified Qi2 devices, transmitters and receivers in the global market in 2025. Android support began appearing in late 2024, while industry statements from Samsung and Google indicated continuing plans to expand Qi2 support in Android handsets and other devices.
Those totals describe certified products and market availability, not a guarantee that a particular phone sold in a particular country supports Qi2. Certification remains the practical test: match the exact phone, case and charger model in WPC’s database, then confirm the adapter and wattage in the manufacturer’s documentation.
Quick Recap
What to remember before buying
- Qi2’s key benefit is magnetic alignment through the MPP profile; non-magnetic EPP products use the regular Qi logo.
- Original Qi2 is a 15 W specification from 2023. Qi2 25W refers to Qi v2.2.1 and requires compatible certified equipment introduced in 2025.
- A charger’s maximum rating is not the phone’s guaranteed charging speed.
- Phone model, case approval, USB-C adapter, alignment and temperature all affect the negotiated rate.
- Use WPC certification listings and the manufacturer’s compatibility table before purchasing, especially for Android phones and Qi2 Ready cases.
