Qi2 is the Wireless Power Consortium’s (WPC) Qi v2.0 generation, introduced in 2023. What many people call Qi2.2 is officially branded Qi2 25W: WPC’s Qi v2.2.1 update, launched in July 2025. Its headline change is a higher stated power tier—up to 25W instead of Qi2’s 15W—while retaining the magnetic-alignment experience of Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile (MPP).

That number is a standards ceiling, not a promise that every phone will draw 25W. The clearest named device support is Apple’s iPhone 17, whose U.S. specifications list Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W. The July 2025 WPC announcement said major Android smartphones would join the ecosystem, but did not identify models. For any phone, check the exact manufacturer specification and the exact charger’s WPC certification before buying.

Qi2, Qi2.2 and Qi2 25W: the names explained

Qi is the global wireless-charging standard maintained by the Wireless Power Consortium. “Qi2” refers to the WPC’s Qi v2.0 generation, which began rolling out in 2023. “Qi2.2” is common informal shorthand for the subsequent Qi v2.2.1 revision. WPC’s consumer-facing name for that revision is Qi2 25W, because its most visible change is the 25-watt power tier.

The naming matters because a product that says only “Qi2” does not necessarily mean 25W. A Qi2 product can be certified to the original 15W tier, while a Qi2 25W product is built and certified for the newer 25W tier. Treat the wattage printed in the phone and charger specifications—not a retailer’s shorthand—as the meaningful compatibility detail.

Qi2 Qi v2.0 Introduced in 2023 15W Includes the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) and an Extended Power Profile (EPP) enhancement that does not require magnets. Therefore, not every Qi v2.0 product has magnetic attachment.
Qi2.2 (informal) Qi v2.2.1 Updated in July 2025 25W The official consumer branding is Qi2 25W. It keeps the Qi2 magnetic-alignment experience for MPP products and raises the stated power tier.
Qi2 25W Qi v2.2.1 WPC’s official consumer name 25W A certified transmitter and a compatible phone are both needed to approach this ceiling; either device can impose a lower limit.

WPC describes Qi2 as a global standard, but product availability and specifications can vary by model, market and later product updates. The Apple specification cited here is the company’s U.S. page, so regional listings should be checked separately.

What changed from Qi2 to Qi2 25W?

The power tier rose from 15W to 25W

Original Qi2 is specified at 15W. Qi2 25W raises the stated tier to 25W. WPC describes that as nearly 70% more charging power than the original Qi2 tier; mathematically, 25W is 66.7% above 15W, which is why the organization uses “nearly 70%.” See WPC’s Qi standard overview and its July 2025 Qi2 25W release.

More transmitter capacity does not force a phone to accept 25W. The phone, transmitter and their negotiated operating conditions determine the delivered rate. If the phone is specified for 15W, a 25W charger does not turn it into a 25W phone. Conversely, a phone advertised for up to 25W still needs a charger that is certified and specified for the 25W tier.

Magnetic alignment remains part of the Qi2 experience—but check the profile

Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile uses magnets to align a compatible phone and charging coil. Correct alignment can make attachment easier and reduce the positioning errors that cause slow or interrupted charging. The 2023 Qi2 launch also included an Extended Power Profile enhancement without magnets. Consequently, “Qi v2.0” by itself is not proof that a particular accessory has a magnetic ring; inspect the product’s profile and physical design.

Qi2 25W raises the power tier; it does not turn every Qi-certified pad into a magnetic accessory. A flat, non-magnetic product may use a different Qi profile, while a magnetic stand or pad should identify its Qi2/MPP certification if that is what you need.

Certification is still the gatekeeper

Before a product can display the Qi or Qi2 logo, WPC says it must pass safety and interoperability testing at an authorized independent laboratory. WPC directs buyers to its Certified Products Database. Certification is evidence about the product that was tested; it does not establish that every phone will accept the charger’s maximum output. Check the phone and charger separately, using the WPC certification guidance as the starting point.

The 25W performance claim is a WPC claim, not a universal test result

WPC says Qi2 25W can charge a smartphone battery from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes. That is the standards body’s stated capability, not an independent charger-versus-charger measurement and not a guarantee for every phone, battery size, temperature or accessory. A phone with a lower wireless ceiling, a warm battery, a thick case or a poorly aligned coil can take longer.

Which phones support Qi2 25W?

Apple iPhone 17: a named, manufacturer-confirmed example

Apple’s U.S. iPhone 17 specifications list “Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W” and identify magnetic alignment hardware. The phrase “up to” is important: it describes the phone’s maximum under supported conditions, not a constant 25W draw throughout a charge cycle.

Availability and specification details can differ by model, country and subsequent product revisions. Use the specification page for the exact iPhone model and market you are buying, rather than assuming that every iPhone has the same Qi2 25W capability.

Android support: do not treat the launch announcement as a model list

WPC’s July 23, 2025 release said that, alongside Apple iPhone, major Android smartphones would join the Qi2 ecosystem “for the first time with this launch.” The release did not name those Android models. It therefore cannot establish that a particular Android phone supports Qi2 25W today.

The same announcement reported that 14 devices, receivers and transmitters had completed Qi2 25W certification testing during the limited launch and that several hundred more were awaiting testing at that time. Those are historical launch figures, not an October 2026 inventory or a current phone-support count. Certification queues change, and a tested accessory is not necessarily a 25W-capable phone.

How to verify an unlisted phone

  1. Open the exact manufacturer specification. Search for the full model name and regional variant. Look specifically for “Qi2,” “Qi2 25W” or a stated wireless-charging maximum. A page that says only “wireless charging” or “Qi2” does not prove 25W support.
  2. Record the phone’s stated ceiling. “Up to 15W” and “up to 25W” are materially different. Keep the qualification—such as “up to”—when comparing products.
  3. Check the exact charger model in WPC’s Certified Products Database. Certification should be associated with the model you intend to buy, not merely with a brand family or a photograph that looks similar.
  4. Use the lower limit for the pairing. If the phone is limited to 15W, the combination cannot deliver 25W simply because the charger is labeled Qi2 25W. If the charger is limited to 15W, a 25W-capable phone will not receive the charger’s missing capacity.
  5. Ignore unverified time promises. Unless there is a model-specific test, do not convert WPC’s general “about 30 minutes” statement into a guaranteed 0%-to-50% result for your phone.

Will a Qi2 25W charger work with a Qi2 phone?

Do not answer this from the wattage on the charger alone. First establish that the charger is a genuine, certified Qi2 25W product and that the phone’s own specification identifies compatible Qi2 charging. Then compare the two maximums. The phone’s supported ceiling remains the practical limit, so a 15W Qi2 phone should be treated as a 15W device even when the transmitter is rated at 25W.

Physical alignment is a separate question from electrical power. A phone and pad may charge while sitting on one another without magnets, but a magnetic stand or pad requires compatible magnetic alignment hardware and a suitable case or accessory. Qi v2.0’s EPP option is specifically why the Qi2 label alone cannot answer the magnet question.

Also inspect what the charger package requires. A product may list 25W output while requiring a separately purchased power adapter or cable. Before comparing prices, confirm whether the necessary power supply and cable are included and whether the maker specifies the input needed to reach the advertised tier.

How to choose a Qi2 25W charger

Start with certification, not the headline wattage

Look up the exact model in WPC’s Certified Products Database and check that the listing corresponds to the Qi2 25W product you are considering. A generic “fast wireless charging” claim is not equivalent to WPC certification, and certification of one model does not automatically cover another model in the same product family.

Match the charger to the phone’s documented maximum

For a phone specified at 25W, choose a certified Qi2 25W transmitter if you want the newer tier. For a phone specified at 15W, a certified 25W transmitter may provide headroom for a future device, but it cannot raise the current phone above its documented limit. If the phone’s specification does not state Qi2 or a maximum, treat compatibility as unconfirmed until the manufacturer clarifies it.

Choose the form factor for the way you use the phone

  • Flat pad: useful when the phone can remain stationary and you do not need to view the display.
  • Stand: keeps the screen visible for calls, timers or navigation, but requires the phone and stand to align at the intended angle.
  • Magnetic accessory: convenient for attachment when both the phone and case arrangement support the relevant magnetic profile. Do not assume that a non-magnetic Qi v2.0 product provides this feature.

Check power-supply and cable requirements

Read the technical specifications and package contents rather than assuming that a high-wattage wireless head includes an adapter. The input supply, cable and any stated thermal conditions can determine whether the charger reaches its advertised tier. Keep the maker’s conditions with the product record so a later comparison does not confuse the charger’s output rating with the wall adapter’s rating.

What Qi2 25W changes in everyday charging

The practical benefit is shorter wireless charging time when all parts of the chain support the higher tier. WPC’s stated 0%-to-50% figure—about 30 minutes—illustrates the intended improvement, but the result depends on the phone’s battery, thermal management, charge state and alignment. Phones commonly reduce power as they fill or warm; the 25W label should therefore be read as a maximum tier rather than a fixed rate.

Magnetic alignment can improve consistency because the charging coils are easier to place correctly. It does not eliminate the need to use a compatible magnetic profile, and it does not compensate for a phone that is not specified for Qi2 25W. A stable attachment can prevent pauses caused by a phone sliding away from the coil, but it cannot change the phone’s electrical limit.

Common buying and troubleshooting mistakes

“Qi2.2” is treated as a formal product label everywhere

WPC’s official consumer-facing name for Qi v2.2.1 is Qi2 25W. Retail pages may use Qi2.2, Qi2 2.2 or other shorthand. Confirm the underlying version and power tier in the technical listing instead of relying on the punctuation in the name.

A 25W charger is assumed to make every phone charge at 25W

The phone remains the limiting component when its specification is lower. Check both sides of the pairing and use the lower supported ceiling.

A launch statistic is presented as a current catalog

The 14 certified devices, receivers and transmitters and the several hundred awaiting testing were figures from the July 2025 limited launch. They do not identify which phones are available in your market in October 2026. Verify current model specifications instead.

A general charging-time claim is used as a guarantee

WPC’s “about 30 minutes” statement is an attributed capability claim. If your phone takes longer, check its maximum, alignment, case thickness, temperature and the charger’s required input before concluding that the hardware is defective.

Qi2 versus Qi2 25W at a glance

Question Qi2 (Qi v2.0) Qi2 25W (Qi v2.2.1, often called Qi2.2)
When introduced? 2023 July 2025
Stated power tier 15W 25W
Magnetic alignment? Available through MPP; Qi v2.0 also has a non-magnetic EPP option Retains the Qi2 magnetic-alignment experience for compatible MPP products
Does the label guarantee a phone’s maximum? No No; the phone and charger must each support the desired tier
Named phone example in the cited specifications Not established here Apple iPhone 17: Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W
Independent universal charge-time result? Not stated Not stated; WPC says about 30 minutes from 0% to 50% as a stated capability

Bottom line for buyers

Qi2 25W is the real standards change behind the informal name Qi2.2: Qi v2.2.1 raises the stated tier from Qi2’s 15W to 25W while preserving magnetic alignment for compatible products. It is not a software switch that upgrades a 15W phone, and it is not proof that every Qi2 accessory has magnets.

As of the cited manufacturer evidence, the iPhone 17 is a confirmed example with Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W. The WPC launch announcement does not provide a reliable current Android model list. For any phone, verify the exact manufacturer specification, verify the exact charger in WPC’s Certified Products Database, and treat the lower supported ceiling as the result you can realistically expect.
