Qi2 is an open wireless-charging standard, while MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging system and accessory ecosystem. They overlap because Apple contributed the magnetic technology behind Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) to the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). The practical difference is not simply “15 watts versus 25 watts”: your iPhone model, Qi2 or MagSafe generation, charger certification and USB-C adapter determine the power you can actually receive.
For an iPhone 12 or later, a certified magnetic charger gives you automatic alignment. For iPhone 8 and later, ordinary Qi charging works without magnets. The safest purchase is a charger carrying the Qi2 certification mark or Apple’s MagSafe designation, matched with the adapter and phone limits in the tables below.
Qi2 and MagSafe are related, but they are not the same thing
Qi is the universal wireless-charging standard maintained by the Wireless Power Consortium. Apple says iPhone 8 and later support Qi-certified chargers. A basic Qi pad transfers energy through magnetic induction, but it does not have to hold the phone in a fixed position.

On compatible iPhones, the magnet ring centers the phone over the coil and can hold accessories in place. Apple describes this alignment as enabling faster, more efficient charging.

Qi2 is the WPC’s cross-brand standard. Its Magnetic Power Profile uses technology Apple contributed to the WPC, so a Qi2 magnetic charger and a MagSafe charger use closely related alignment principles. Qi2 is not an Apple-only license, however: certified products can come from many manufacturers and are tested for interoperability.
The name “Qi v2.0” alone is not enough to prove that a product is magnetic. The WPC defined two profiles in Qi v2.0:
- Magnetic Power Profile (MPP): branded to consumers as Qi2 and built around magnetic alignment.
- Extended Power Profile (EPP): an enhanced non-magnetic profile.
Look specifically for the Qi2 logo or a listing in the WPC’s certification system when magnetic attachment matters. A product described only as “magnetic” may use a proprietary magnet arrangement and may not be Qi2-certified.

Qi2 has two important power tiers
Original Qi2: up to 15 watts
The first Qi2 generation launched in November 2023 with a 15-watt charging tier for certified mobile devices. The magnetic ring improves coil alignment, reducing the need to find a precise “sweet spot,” but 15W is a maximum capability rather than a promise that every phone will draw 15W continuously.

Qi2 25W: the newer v2.2.1 tier
The WPC announced Qi2 25W under Qi version 2.2.1 on July 23, 2025. It describes the new tier as nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. That comparison is between the standard’s rated tiers; it is not a guarantee that an iPhone will charge 70% faster. The phone, charger, adapter, temperature and battery state still govern delivered power.
The WPC also gives a general estimate of about 30 minutes from 0 to 50% for a smartphone battery with Qi2 25W. That is a broad standards-level statement, not an iPhone-specific test result or guaranteed time. Battery capacity, charging curves and thermal limits can make an iPhone’s result different.
Qi2 25W certification therefore matters when you are buying a new charger, but it does not upgrade an older iPhone beyond the rate Apple allows for that model. A 25W charger connected to a phone limited to 15W remains a 15W setup at best.
What an iPhone can actually receive
Apple’s support guidance published October 1, 2026 says MagSafe output varies with the iPhone model, adapter wattage and system conditions. The following figures are Apple’s stated peak limits for specified MagSafe charger generations, part numbers and adapters; they are not sustained rates for an entire charge.
| iPhone models listed by Apple | Maximum stated MagSafe power | Required conditions in Apple’s guidance |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max; iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max; iPhone 17; iPhone 16 Plus; iPhone 16 Pro Max | Up to 25W | A supported MagSafe charger part number and a USB-C adapter rated at 30W or more, meeting Apple’s listed voltage and current requirements. |
| iPhone Air | Up to 20W | The supported MagSafe charger and adapter combination specified by Apple. |
| iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro | Up to 22.5W | The supported MagSafe charger and adapter combination specified by Apple. |
| iPhone 17e, iPhone 15 and earlier models covered by the page | Up to 15W | The specified MagSafe charger with a USB-C adapter rated at 20W or more. |
Apple’s page is the controlling reference for the exact model, charger part number and adapter requirements. Check Apple’s MagSafe Charger instructions before buying, especially if your phone is a newer generation or a regional variant.

Apple’s store listing for the current two-metre MagSafe Charger says the cable is Qi2 25W certified and Qi certified. It states up to 25W with a 30W adapter, up to 15W for iPhone 12 or later using MagSafe with a 20W adapter, and up to 7.5W for Qi charging on iPhone 8 or later. Those are separate operating cases, not three speeds that every iPhone can select. See the Apple MagSafe Charger product page for the charger’s current compatibility details.
Magnetic alignment versus ordinary Qi placement
With MagSafe or Qi2 MPP
Place the back of a compatible iPhone against the charger. The magnet ring pulls the coils into alignment and helps the phone stay centered if you pick it up or adjust its angle. Alignment can improve consistency, but it cannot override the iPhone’s thermal, battery or model-specific limits.
With a non-magnetic Qi pad
Center the iPhone over the pad’s marked coil. If the phone is off-center, charging may be slow, intermittent or absent. Qi charging is broader than magnetic compatibility: Apple says iPhone 8 or later can use Qi-certified chargers even when the phone has no MagSafe ring.
Magnetic attachment also does not prove that a charger follows Qi2. Certification, not the presence of a ring in a product photo, is the useful check.
Which charger should you choose?
Choose a Qi2-certified charger when you want cross-brand flexibility
A Qi2-certified wireless charger is the sensible choice if you may charge different brands of phones, want magnetic alignment without buying exclusively into Apple’s accessory system, or are purchasing a new charger for a phone that supports Qi2. Confirm whether the listing says Qi2 and whether it is the original 15W tier or Qi2 25W. A generic “wireless” or “magnetic” label does not answer either question.

Choose a MagSafe charger when Apple integration is the priority
Use Apple’s MagSafe system when you need the official magnetic accessory ecosystem, Apple’s published model-by-model charging behavior, or accessories designed specifically around MagSafe attachment. The current Apple MagSafe Charger is also Qi2 25W certified, so the distinction is not always a choice between incompatible technologies; it is often a choice between Apple’s accessory and certification ecosystem and a third-party Qi2 implementation.
Choose ordinary Qi when magnets and peak speed are not important
A Qi-certified pad can be adequate for an iPhone 8 or later on a desk or bedside table. It generally costs less and can charge phones with different shapes, but you must place the phone correctly and should expect the iPhone-specific Qi limit rather than a MagSafe or Qi2 magnetic rate. Apple’s store information lists up to 7.5W for Qi charging on iPhone 8 or later with its MagSafe Charger.
Adapter requirements are part of the charging system
The wattage printed on the charging puck is only one component. The USB-C power adapter must be able to supply the charger’s requested power, and Apple may require a particular minimum wattage, voltage and current for a stated peak.
- For the Apple combinations listed at up to 25W, Apple specifies a USB-C adapter rated at 30W or greater, along with supported charger part numbers and electrical requirements.
- For the 15W MagSafe cases listed for iPhone 17e, iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple specifies a USB-C adapter rated at 20W or greater.
- An adapter with a higher number does not force the phone to accept more power. The phone and charger negotiate a safe level.
- Using a lower-rated adapter can reduce the available rate or prevent the charger from reaching its advertised maximum.
When shopping, treat the charger and adapter as one specification. If a listing says “25W” but omits the required adapter, model compatibility or charger part number, the claim is incomplete.
Cases, heat and placement can reduce the rate
Apple says charging can slow when a case is thick, contains metal or includes a battery. A case that blocks or misaligns the magnetic ring can also weaken attachment. Remove the case temporarily if the phone does not center or the charging animation repeatedly starts and stops.

Wireless charging creates heat. If the battery becomes too warm, iOS can limit charging, including holding the battery below or around 80% until the temperature falls. This is protective behavior, not evidence that the charger has failed. Move the phone and charger out of direct sun, improve airflow and avoid covering the charging puck with fabric.
Keep magnetic-stripe cards, security badges, passports and key fobs out from between the phone and charger. Apple warns that magnets or the charging field can damage magnetic strips or RFID chips. Do not place coins or other metal objects on the charging surface.
If you connect a cable to the iPhone, wired power takes precedence over wireless charging. Disconnect the cable when you want to test the wireless setup.

How to set up a Qi2 or MagSafe charger
- Verify the phone model. Check Apple’s model name in Settings > General > About, then compare it with the current compatibility information in Apple’s MagSafe support article. For basic Qi, Apple’s guidance covers iPhone 8 and later.
- Check certification. Look for the Qi2 mark for a magnetic Qi2 charger, or Apple’s MagSafe designation for an official MagSafe accessory. Do not rely on “magnetic” alone.
- Match the adapter. Use the minimum USB-C adapter wattage and electrical specification required for your phone and charger combination. Use 30W or more only where Apple’s table calls for it; a larger adapter is not automatically faster.
- Connect power before placing the phone. Plug the charger into the adapter and the adapter into an outlet. This makes it easier to see whether the puck receives power.
- Remove interfering items. Take off thick or metal cases for the first test and remove cards, badges and key fobs from the charging area.
- Center the phone. Let the MagSafe or Qi2 ring align the phone, or place a non-magnetic iPhone centrally on the Qi pad. Look for the charging indicator.
- Check after a few minutes. If the phone is hot, charging is slow or the indicator disappears, move it to a cooler location, reseat the connector and test without the case.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The phone does not charge at all
- Confirm the outlet, USB-C adapter and cable work with another device.
- Reseat the charger’s USB-C connection.
- Remove metal objects and the case.
- Recenter the iPhone on the pad or allow the magnetic ring to snap into place.
- Check that your iPhone is iPhone 8 or later for Qi, and that the magnetic model is listed as compatible for MagSafe or Qi2.
Charging starts and stops
- Look for heat caused by sunlight, bedding, a thick case or a warm room.
- Disconnect any wired charging cable; wired power takes precedence.
- Try a different certified cable and adapter if the charger repeatedly loses power.
- Inspect for foreign objects between the phone and charging surface.
The charger is slower than the advertised number
- Identify whether the charger is original Qi2 at 15W or Qi2 25W.
- Compare your exact iPhone model with Apple’s peak limits; many models are below 25W.
- Verify the adapter meets the required 20W or 30W minimum and the charger part number is supported.
- Remember that advertised wattage is a peak capability, not a constant charging rate. Phones normally reduce power as the battery fills and may reduce it further when warm.
Certification and safety checks before buying
Certification is valuable because the WPC says Qi-certified products undergo independent testing for safety and interoperability. Search for the specific model in the WPC certification information rather than assuming every product from a familiar brand is certified.
- For magnetic cross-brand charging: require the Qi2 mark and identify whether the product is 15W Qi2 or Qi2 25W.
- For official Apple behavior: verify the MagSafe designation, supported iPhone models and charger part number in Apple’s current documentation.
- For speed: check the phone’s maximum, the charger’s tier and the adapter’s minimum wattage together.
- For physical compatibility: confirm case thickness, magnetic-ring placement and whether the stand or mount supports your phone’s orientation.
- For safety: avoid counterfeit or uncertified products, keep metal objects away and stop using a cable or puck that is damaged, unusually hot or intermittently powered.
Qi2 versus MagSafe: the decision in one view
| Question | Qi2 | MagSafe |

Bottom line for an iPhone owner
Buy based on the exact phone and the complete charger setup, not the largest wattage printed on the box. Qi2 gives you a cross-brand, certified magnetic standard; MagSafe gives you Apple’s accessory ecosystem and model-specific charging guidance. Original Qi2 is a 15W tier, Qi2 25W is a newer standard tier, and only certain iPhones and Apple charger/adapter combinations can reach up to 25W. Verify certification, use the required adapter, keep the phone cool and unobstructed, and expect the iPhone to regulate power throughout the charge.
