Qi2 is not simply a faster Qi. Its defining change is the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), which lets a certified transmitter and receiver attach and align magnetically. Later revisions add accessory and obstruction testing and, in the Qi2 25W branding, a specification capability of up to 25 watts. That number is not a promise that every Qi2 phone or charger reaches 25 W. Support is model-specific: verify the exact phone, transmitter, certification record, charging rate and, for a phone labeled Qi2 Ready, the approved accessory combination.
What Qi and Qi2 actually mean
Qi is the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) standard for inductive wireless charging. A transmitter in a pad, stand or vehicle accessory sends power through a short-range magnetic field, and a receiver in the phone converts it into usable charging power. A certified transmitter and receiver are tested against the relevant Qi requirements rather than relying only on a manufacturer’s claim that two products are compatible.
Qi2 is the WPC’s newer generation of the standard. The consumer-visible difference is magnetic attachment and alignment through the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP). Instead of placing a phone somewhere over a broad charging coil and hoping the coils line up, an MPP receiver and transmitter use magnets to guide the phone into the intended position and hold it there.

How the standard evolved
| Revision or label | WPC timing and change | What a buyer should infer |
|---|---|---|
| Qi v2.0 | April 2023; introduced the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), including magnetic attachment and alignment. | The first Qi2 generation brought the magnetic experience. WPC says products certified to Qi v2.0 are not required to be fully backward compatible with Qi 1.x products. |
| Qi v2.1 | September 2024; added support for Automatic Alignment Profile transmitters, magnetic accessory covers and testing for mechanical obstructions near a phone’s charging area. | Some receivers can be designed around an approved accessory combination, and physical obstructions receive more explicit attention in testing. |
| Qi v2.2 | April 2025; added support for up to 25 W, power modes intended to optimize transfer for USB-C adapters, and additional power-control and foreign-object-detection changes. | Up to 25 W is a capability of the specification. It is not the guaranteed rate of every certified product. |
| Qi2 25W | WPC’s July 23, 2025 release brands Qi v2.2.1 as Qi2 25W. | The label identifies the later high-power specification family. Confirm the phone and charger’s own supported rate. |
| Qi v2.3 | WPC identifies v2.3 as its latest specification; it is available to members, while a public download can lag the member specification. | A product can be certified against a revision that is newer than the version currently available for public download. |
What changed from Qi to Qi2?
Magnetic attachment and alignment
MPP is the central change. Magnets pull a compatible phone and charger into a defined position, reducing the guesswork of centering a phone on a flat pad. A stand can keep the receiver and transmitter aligned while the phone is upright, and a magnetic pad can remain attached when the phone is moved slightly.
Alignment is more than a convenience feature. Wireless charging depends on the relationship between the two coils. When a phone is off-center, charging can be inefficient, may begin and stop, or may not start at all. MPP gives a compatible pair a mechanical reference for that relationship. It does not eliminate every cause of slow or interrupted charging: a foreign object, a thick or unsuitable case, heat, a weak power adapter or a phone’s own charging limits can still affect the result.
More explicit accessory and obstruction testing
Qi v2.1 lists support for Automatic Alignment Profile (AAP) transmitters, magnetic accessory covers and testing for mechanical obstructions near the phone’s charging area. Those additions matter when a phone uses a case, ring, cover or other attachment between the receiver and transmitter. A design that works with one approved accessory is not automatically validated with every accessory that happens to contain magnets.

Qi v2.2 lists support for up to 25 W and adds power modes intended to optimize transfer with USB-C adapters, along with further power-control and foreign-object-detection changes. WPC’s July 23, 2025 release says the Qi2 25W branding represents nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. That percentage is WPC’s characterization in that 2025 release, not an independent measurement of every product.

A specification ceiling is different from a device rating. The phone, charger, power adapter and thermal conditions all participate in the charging session. A 25W transmitter cannot make a receiver that is certified for a lower rate accept 25 W, and a phone certified for a higher rate cannot obtain it from a lower-rated transmitter.
Which devices support each standard?
There is no complete, current device-by-device list in the official material for this comparison. Do not infer support from a manufacturer, operating system or the presence of a magnetic case. Check the exact model in the WPC Certified Products database and read the manufacturer’s specifications for that model and its intended accessories. WPC describes independent laboratory testing as part of certification and identifies its searchable database as the verification route.
| Label | What it identifies | Magnetic requirement | Rate implication | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qi | The earlier generation of certified wireless-power products. | Magnetic attachment is not implied. | The label alone does not state a single charging rate. | WPC describes certified Qi receivers and chargers as interoperable, including products using earlier Qi versions, but individual combinations still need to be checked. |
| Qi2 | WPC associates the logo with Qi specification v2.0 and MPP. | MPP magnetic attachment and alignment are the defining feature. | The logo does not guarantee 25 W. | Check the exact certification record and the phone’s supported rate. |
| Qi2 Ready | A receiver-and-accessory combination certification associated with Qi v2.1. | The tested magnetic behavior depends on the approved accessory. | The label does not independently state a universal rate. | Use the manufacturer’s approved accessory list; a different case or attachment is not automatically covered. |
| Qi2 25W | WPC’s branding for Qi specification v2.2.1 with MPP. | MPP remains part of the family. | The specification supports up to 25 W. | Actual output depends on the certified receiver, transmitter, adapter and operating conditions. |
How to verify a phone before buying a charger
- Record the exact model identifier. Use the model number from the phone’s settings, retail label or manufacturer support page, not just a product-family name.
- Search the WPC Certified Products database. Look for the receiver entry and note the certification information and standard association.
- Read the maker’s specification for that exact model. Confirm whether it says Qi, Qi2, Qi2 Ready or Qi2 25W, and record any stated maximum wireless charging rate.
- Check the accessory condition. If the phone is described as Qi2 Ready, identify the specific approved cover, case or other accessory used in the certification combination.
- Verify the transmitter separately. A pad or stand must have its own certification and a stated output appropriate for the phone. Also check the power adapter requirement supplied with the transmitter.
- Keep the evidence together. Save the phone’s model page, the WPC listing and the charger’s specification. This prevents a similarly named model or a regional variant from being substituted later.
Will a Qi2 charger work with my phone?
If the phone is Qi2 certified
A Qi2-certified phone is designed for the MPP behavior represented by the Qi2 label. Use a Qi2-certified pad or stand and confirm the rate stated for both products. Magnetic attachment should occur when the phone and transmitter use compatible magnetic geometry, but a case or attachment can change the physical interface.

“Qi2 Ready” is not the same as saying that the bare phone is a complete Qi2 magnetic receiver with every Qi2 accessory. It identifies a receiver-and-accessory combination associated with Qi v2.1. The phone may rely on the specific approved magnetic accessory named by its manufacturer. Use that accessory and verify the transmitter against the combination; another case, ring or cover may not provide the tested alignment or clearance.

If the phone is Qi certified but not Qi2
A Qi2 transmitter may still charge some earlier Qi receivers, but you should not assume universal compatibility. WPC’s general certification information describes certified chargers and receivers as working together, including earlier versions, while its Qi v2.0 history specifically says Qi2 v2.0 products are not required to be fully backward compatible with Qi 1.x products. The safe approach is to check the exact certified pairing rather than relying on the logo alone.
If the phone has no verified Qi certification
Do not treat a magnetic back, a wireless-charging icon or a third-party case as proof of support. Confirm that the phone itself has a certified receiver or a manufacturer-documented wireless-charging implementation before purchasing a Qi2 transmitter.
Qi versus Qi2: the practical comparison
| Decision point | Qi | Qi2 | Qi2 Ready | Qi2 25W |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary generation | Earlier Qi generations | Qi v2.0 family | Qi v2.1 receiver-accessory combination | Qi v2.2.1 branding |
| Magnetic alignment | Not implied by the label | MPP is the defining feature | Depends on the approved accessory combination | MPP is included |
| Maximum stated capability | No single rate is established by the label | Do not infer 25 W from the label | Check the certified combination and maker’s rate | Up to 25 W at the specification level |
| What must be checked | Exact receiver and transmitter certification | Exact receiver, transmitter and supported rate | Receiver, transmitter and named approved accessory | Receiver, transmitter, adapter and supported rate |
Why a “25W” label does not mean 25W on every phone
The 25W figure belongs to the Qi v2.2 capability. It is not a blanket promise for all products carrying a Qi2-related logo. Charging power is negotiated and constrained by the receiver’s certification, the transmitter’s output, the USB-C adapter feeding the transmitter, temperature and the phone’s charging controls.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Receiver limit: the phone may accept less than the transmitter can provide.
- Transmitter limit: a pad or stand may implement a lower certified rate even when it belongs to the Qi2 family.
- Adapter limit: the transmitter cannot deliver more power than its USB-C adapter and internal power path support.
- Thermal limit: the phone can reduce power as it warms, particularly during demanding use or in a warm environment.
- Physical limit: a case, obstruction or poor alignment can reduce transfer or prevent the expected mode.
When comparing products, record the maximum rate for the exact phone and charger rather than copying the largest number on a package. WPC’s “nearly 70% more power than original Qi2” statement describes the change from the original Qi2 generation at the standard level; it does not predict a measured percentage increase for a particular handset.

Choosing a Qi or Qi2 charger
Choose a Qi2 pad or stand when alignment is the priority
A certified Qi2 pad or stand is the logical choice when you want magnetic positioning, an upright viewing angle or less trial-and-error on a bedside table or desk. Confirm that the phone is Qi2-certified or that its Qi2 Ready accessory is explicitly supported. Check the charger’s certified rate rather than assuming the newest branding supplies the highest rate.
Choose an earlier Qi charger for a verified Qi receiver
An earlier Qi charger can be appropriate when the phone is certified only for Qi and you do not need magnetic attachment. Its compatibility should still be checked at the model level, especially when mixing a Qi v2.0 transmitter with an older Qi 1.x receiver.
Check the case before judging the charger
Remove a thick case, metal plate, wallet attachment or unapproved magnetic ring when diagnosing poor charging. Qi v2.1’s reference to magnetic accessory covers and mechanical-obstruction testing does not certify every case on the market. The approved-accessory list for a Qi2 Ready phone is particularly important.
Recommended Free Tools
Match the power adapter
Use the adapter rating specified by the charger manufacturer. Qi2 v2.2 includes power modes intended to optimize transfer for USB-C adapters, but that feature cannot overcome an underpowered adapter or a cable and power path that the charger does not support.

Troubleshooting a Qi or Qi2 charging problem
The phone does not start charging
- Confirm that the phone model appears as a certified receiver or is documented by its manufacturer as supporting wireless charging.
- Remove metal objects, cards and unapproved attachments from between the phone and transmitter.
- For a Qi2 Ready phone, install the named approved accessory and retry.
- Re-seat the phone so the receiver and transmitter surfaces are in their intended position.
- Test the charger with the exact combination listed by its manufacturer before concluding that the phone or charger is defective.
Charging starts and stops
- Check for movement that breaks alignment, especially on a flat pad.
- Inspect the case or cover for thickness, metal components or a raised obstruction over the charging area.
- Use the specified USB-C adapter and cable, then allow the phone and charger to cool if either is hot.
- Compare behavior with the phone uncovered. If charging becomes stable, the accessory—not the standard—may be the limiting factor.
The phone charges, but more slowly than expected
- Read the phone’s documented maximum wireless rate and compare it with the transmitter’s certified rate.
- Check whether the charger is a Qi2 model or a Qi2 25W model; the former does not imply the latter’s capability.
- Verify the adapter’s output and the charger’s required power mode.
- Expect the phone to reduce power when temperature, battery-management settings or active use require it.
How certification and logos should guide your decision
A logo is a starting point, not a complete compatibility statement. The useful evidence is the intersection of three records: the phone’s exact receiver certification, the charger’s transmitter certification and the manufacturer’s instructions for cases or accessories. WPC’s database is intended to verify certified products, while the manufacturer’s model page supplies details such as the supported rate and an approved Qi2 Ready accessory.
Do not convert the number of products in a launch announcement into a current market total. WPC’s July 2025 Qi2 25W release reported that fourteen devices—receivers and transmitters—had completed Qi2 25W certification testing in a limited launch. That was a dated launch figure, not a count of all products currently certified.
A simple decision framework
- Need magnets? If no, a verified Qi setup may be sufficient. If yes, continue with Qi2 or a documented Qi2 Ready combination.
- Need the highest available specification capability? Look for Qi2 25W, then confirm that both the phone and charger support the desired rate.
- Is the phone labeled Qi2 Ready? Treat the approved accessory as part of the product specification, not an optional substitute.
- Are you mixing generations? Check the exact certified pairing because Qi2 v2.0 is not required to be fully backward compatible with Qi 1.x.
- Does the evidence agree? Proceed only when the WPC listing, phone specification and charger specification identify a compatible combination.
Bottom line
Qi2’s important upgrade is magnetic alignment through MPP, not a universal speed increase. Qi2 25W is a later specification capability, and Qi2 Ready identifies a receiver that depends on a particular tested accessory. For a reliable purchase, verify the exact phone and charger in the WPC Certified Products database, read the manufacturer’s rate and accessory requirements, and treat cross-generation compatibility as something to confirm—not assume.
