Qi is an industry wireless-charging standard; MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging and accessory system. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable names. Qi charging can work without magnets, while MagSafe uses magnetic alignment on supported Apple devices and accessories. Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) brings MagSafe-derived magnetic alignment into an interoperable standard, while Qi2 also includes a nonmagnetic profile.
Choose a certified Qi charger for broad compatibility, Qi2 MPP when you want magnetic snap-on alignment, and MagSafe when you want Apple’s supported charging and accessory experience. For the fastest wireless charging, verify the exact phone model, charger profile, charger generation and power adapter rather than relying on a headline wattage.
What Qi, MagSafe and Qi2 actually mean
Qi is the wireless-power standard
Qi is maintained by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). It defines how a charging transmitter and a compatible receiver transfer power wirelessly, with requirements intended to support safety and interoperability. The logo alone is not enough evidence for an unknown product: WPC says, “Only Qi Certified products can display the Qi or Qi2 logo, a reassurance of safety and interoperability.” Check the exact model in the WPC standards overview and its certified-products database.

Qi certification also does not mean every certified product has the same output. The phone and charger negotiate a supported level, and the result can be limited by the phone’s receiver, the charger’s profile, the power adapter, temperature and other operating conditions. A certified 10W or 15W product can therefore be the right choice for one phone and an unnecessarily limited choice for another.
MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic system
MagSafe is Apple’s branded charging and accessory system. On a supported iPhone and compatible case, magnets pull the charger into the correct position, helping the coils stay aligned while the phone is attached to the charger or accessory. Apple also states that a MagSafe Charger can charge Qi-compatible iPhones and AirPods without magnetic alignment, so the charger can have nonmagnetic Qi compatibility even when the phone does not support the MagSafe magnet arrangement.
MagSafe performance depends on the specific charger model, iPhone, case and power adapter. “MagSafe” is therefore not a universal speed rating for every Apple device. A MagSafe puck attached to a supported iPhone, the same puck resting on an older Qi-only phone, and the puck charging AirPods are different use cases with potentially different limits.
The magnets are useful beyond speed. They make it easier to place a phone on a bedside stand, car mount or desk charger, and they can keep the phone attached while you use it. That convenience disappears if a case is too thick, lacks the correct magnet arrangement or contains an accessory that interferes with alignment.
Qi2 adds a magnetic profile, but not every Qi2 product is magnetic
Qi v2.0 introduced two profiles. The WPC’s November 15, 2023 announcement describes the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), based on MagSafe technology contributed by Apple to the WPC and branded with the Qi2 logo. It also describes an Extended Power Profile (EPP) that complies with Qi v2.0 but does not include magnets.
That distinction matters when shopping. A product described only as “Qi2” may need a profile or certification check before you assume it snaps to a phone. A Qi2 MPP charger provides the magnetic behavior associated with Qi2; an EPP product does not. The word “Qi2” identifies a version of the WPC standard, not a guarantee that every implementation has the same magnet hardware or power tier.
Qi2 also improves alignment as a charging-system concept. Better coil alignment can make placement more repeatable than a loose pad, but the phone still needs the appropriate receiver and case arrangement. A magnetic ring added to a case may help physical attachment, yet it does not automatically turn a phone into a Qi2 MPP device or grant a higher charging rate.

| Term | What it identifies | Magnets required? | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qi | WPC wireless-power standard | No | Phone and charger certification, supported power level and adapter |
| MagSafe | Apple magnetic charging and accessory system | For magnetic attachment, yes on the compatible phone/case setup | Exact iPhone, MagSafe charger generation, case and adapter |
| Qi2 MPP | Qi2 magnetic profile based on Apple-contributed MagSafe technology | Yes | MPP certification and the phone’s matching profile support |
| Qi2 EPP | Qi2 nonmagnetic profile | No | EPP certification and the phone’s supported Qi rate |
In short, Qi answers “which wireless-power rules does this product follow?” MagSafe answers “which Apple magnetic charging and accessory system is this?” Qi2 MPP answers both a WPC-standard question and a magnetic-alignment question. Those categories overlap, but none should be used as shorthand for all the others.

How the charging profiles affect speed
Wireless charging speed is negotiated by the phone and charger. The maximum printed on a charger describes capability under supported conditions, not a guaranteed rate on every phone. The phone model, charger generation, power-adapter wattage and system conditions all matter.
Published Qi and Qi2 figures
| Profile or record | Published maximum or capability | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Original Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile | 15 W | WPC’s Qi2 overview describes 15 W magnetic charging in the original Qi2 launch context in 2023. |
| Qi2 25W | 25 W maximum profile | WPC announced Qi v2.2.1 under the Qi2 25W branding on July 23, 2025, describing nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. Both the charger and phone must support the profile. |
| Apple MagSafe Charger A2580 | 15 W potential load power | The WPC certification record identifies this specific charger as Qi-certified, using MPP version 2.0.1, certified September 9, 2024. |
| iPhone 17 WPC record | 25 W maximum load power | The specific WPC record lists Qi v2.2.1 and MPP25, certified February 5, 2026. It is not a universal charging promise for every iPhone. |
See the WPC Qi2 25W announcement, the A2580 certification record and the iPhone 17 certification record for those model-specific details.
The nearly 70% increase cited by WPC compares the Qi2 25W tier with original 15W Qi2. It does not mean every Qi2 charger suddenly supplies 25W. A 15W MPP charger remains a 15W-class product, and a phone that lacks MPP25 support cannot use the newer ceiling merely because a charger advertises it.
Apple’s current iPhone guidance
Apple’s iPhone charge-speed article, published March 16, 2026, says: “For faster wireless charging, use a MagSafe Charger or a Qi2-certified wireless charger.” It also notes that lower-power wireless charging, such as Qi1-certified charging, can take longer.
Apple’s MagSafe guidance lists up to 25 W for specified iPhone-and-charger combinations when paired with a 30 W-or-greater adapter. The same guidance identifies lower peaks for other models, including 20 W for iPhone Air and 22.5 W for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. Those figures are model- and setup-specific. Apple warns: “The actual power delivered to the iPhone will vary depending on the iPhone model, wattage of the power adapter and system conditions.” Consult Apple’s MagSafe chargers and battery packs guide for the current combinations and Apple’s MagSafe setup instructions.
“Up to 25W” is a peak capability, not a promise that the phone will draw 25W throughout a charging session. Phones can reduce input as the battery fills or when system conditions require it. The cited Apple guidance does not provide a universal charge-time, heat or efficiency comparison between Qi, Qi2 and MagSafe, so those outcomes should not be inferred from wattage labels alone.
Compatibility: what will work with what?
A Qi charger and a Qi phone
A certified Qi charger is the broadest starting point when both the charger and phone document Qi support. It can charge without magnets, but placement may be less convenient and the supported rate may be lower than a newer magnetic profile. Check the manufacturer’s stated maximum for the exact phone and charger rather than assuming that any Qi logo means the same wattage.

A MagSafe Charger and a Qi-compatible phone
Apple says a MagSafe Charger can charge Qi-compatible iPhones and AirPods without magnetic alignment. In that situation, the charger’s magnetic snap-on behavior is not available unless the phone and case have the compatible magnetic arrangement. Charging speed is governed by the phone’s Qi support and the charger-and-adapter combination.
This is why “MagSafe-compatible” in a listing needs careful reading. It may mean the puck physically attaches to a MagSafe case, or it may simply mean the charger can deliver power to a Qi device. Confirm whether the listing names Apple MagSafe certification, Qi2 MPP certification or only generic Qi compatibility.
A Qi2 MPP charger and a magnetic phone or case
Qi2 MPP is the relevant choice when you want a standardized magnetic connection rather than a loose charging pad. The phone must support the matching magnetic profile, and a case must preserve the intended alignment. A phone that supports only nonmagnetic Qi or Qi2 EPP can still charge only at the capabilities its documentation specifies; it should not be expected to attach magnetically.
For a Qi2 25W setup, verify both ends independently. The charger needs Qi2 25W certification, and the phone needs documentation or a certification record for the MPP25 tier. The 2026 WPC record for iPhone 17 is an example of a specific phone certification; it does not establish that every earlier or later iPhone accepts 25W.
Cases, rings and accessories
Magnetic alignment is a system property, not merely a charger feature. A thick, misplaced or incompatible case can prevent the phone and charger from aligning correctly. Cases marketed for magnetic charging are not automatically evidence of a particular Qi2 or MagSafe certification, so verify the case and phone documentation when attachment or a specific power tier matters.
Wallets, cards, metal plates and car-mount adapters can change the distance or magnetic path between the coils. If charging is intermittent, remove those accessories first. A ring or adhesive magnet may improve attachment to a stand, but it cannot change the phone’s certified wireless-power profile.
Which should you use?
| Your priority | Best direction | Checks before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum device compatibility | A certified Qi charger supported by your phone | Phone and charger certification, connector and adapter requirements, and the expected rate |
| Magnetic snap-on placement | A Qi2 MPP charger or a MagSafe charger with a compatible phone and case | Magnetic profile, phone support and case alignment |
| Faster wireless charging on iPhone | Apple MagSafe or a Qi2-certified charger | Exact iPhone model, charger generation, adapter wattage and Apple’s stated maximum |
| Qi2 25W capability | A Qi2 25W-certified charger paired with a phone specified for Qi2 25W | Certification or documentation for both ends; do not infer support from “wireless” or “magnetic” alone |
| Charging AirPods or another Qi accessory | A certified Qi or MagSafe charger documented for that accessory | Accessory compatibility and whether magnetic alignment is actually supported |
For an iPhone owner who wants a direct Apple accessory experience, choose the MagSafe Charger model Apple lists for the phone and use the required adapter. For a phone that supports Qi2 MPP, a Qi2 wireless charger offers magnetic alignment while remaining part of the WPC standard. Choose Qi2 25W only when the phone also supports that newer tier; otherwise its higher headline number cannot be used.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you charge several brands, Qi2 MPP can be a practical middle ground: it provides a magnetic interface for compatible phones while retaining the WPC interoperability goal. If your devices are older or lack magnetic support, a conventional Qi pad may be more economical and just as capable for their documented limits. The best choice is the one that matches the devices you actually own, not the largest number printed on the box.

How to check certification and avoid misleading labels
- Identify the exact phone model. Record the model name, generation and regional variant if the manufacturer distinguishes them. “iPhone” or “Qi2 phone” is too broad for a power decision.
- Find the charger’s complete model number. Use the label, manual or manufacturer support page. Retail descriptions can combine several generations under one name.
- Search the WPC database. Use the WPC Qi page and confirm the exact product record, certification status, Qi version and profile. A generic marketplace claim is not a substitute for a record.
- Check the profile. Look for MPP when magnetic attachment is required, EPP when a nonmagnetic Qi2 implementation is acceptable, and MPP25 or equivalent Qi2 25W documentation when targeting 25 W.
- Read the phone maker’s support page. Confirm the phone’s maximum wireless rate, supported charger types, case limitations and any required adapter wattage.
- Match the adapter. A charger that can accept a high input does not make a lower-rated adapter deliver the charger’s peak output. Use the wattage and cable requirements specified for the combination.
- Check what is included. Some chargers require a separate USB-C power adapter. The charger’s headline wattage may assume an adapter that is not in the box, so account for that requirement when comparing products.
Setting up an iPhone with MagSafe or Qi2
- Update your compatibility information. Check Apple’s current charge-speed guidance and the charger’s model number before connecting anything.
- Use a suitable case. Remove a case that blocks alignment, or use one documented for the phone’s magnetic system. Do not place cards, metal plates or other objects between the phone and charger unless Apple explicitly supports that accessory.
- Connect the charger to the required adapter. For Apple’s listed 25 W MagSafe combinations, Apple specifies a 30 W-or-greater adapter. Other combinations can have different requirements.
- Place the phone on the charger. A MagSafe or Qi2 MPP charger should align magnetically when the phone and case support the same arrangement. A standard Qi pad may require you to center the phone manually.
- Confirm charging on the lock screen. If charging does not begin, remove the case or accessories, reposition the phone and check the cable, adapter and charger model.
- Interpret the result correctly. The displayed rate is not a promise that the phone will continuously draw the charger’s maximum. Apple identifies model, adapter wattage and system conditions as variables.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Assuming every Qi2 product has magnets
Qi v2.0 includes both magnetic MPP and nonmagnetic EPP. Fix this by checking the profile in the product’s WPC record and manufacturer specifications.
Assuming every magnetic charger is Qi2 25W
Magnetic attachment and 25 W operation are separate claims. Original Qi2 MPP was 15 W, and a MagSafe charger can have a different model-specific limit. Verify Qi2 25W certification for the charger and matching support in the phone.
Expecting one iPhone maximum to apply to all iPhones
Apple lists different peaks, including 25 W for specified combinations, 20 W for iPhone Air and 22.5 W for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. Use the figure for your exact model and charger generation.
The Tool Desk

A 30 W or higher adapter is required for Apple’s listed 25 W MagSafe combinations, but adapter wattage alone does not establish that a phone, charger and cable support 25 W. Check the complete chain.
Treating “up to” as a measured charging time
The available specifications identify profile limits and Apple’s conditions, not an independent timed comparison. Do not infer a guaranteed charge time, heat level, efficiency or battery-life outcome from the maximum wattage.
Skipping certification checks
Certification is useful evidence of the intended standard and interoperability. If a product has no precise model record or documentation, treat its Qi, Qi2, magnetic and wattage claims as unverified until the manufacturer supplies them.
Confusing a magnetic case with a magnetic phone
A case can add a magnetic ring for mounting, but that does not prove the phone supports Qi2 MPP or MagSafe charging. Check the phone’s receiver specification separately from the case’s attachment claim.

A quick decision checklist
- Do you need a magnetic connection, or is a flat charging pad sufficient?
- Does your phone support Qi, Qi2 MPP, Qi2 EPP or Qi2 25W?
- Is the charger certified under the profile you intend to use?
- Does your case preserve the required magnetic alignment?
- What maximum does the phone maker specify for this exact charger and adapter?
- Does the included or chosen adapter meet the charger’s input requirement?
- Are you buying for an iPhone combination Apple explicitly lists, or relying on a generic label?
- Will you charge AirPods or other Qi accessories, and does the charger document support for them?
If you answer those questions from the phone and charger documentation, the choice is straightforward: certified Qi for broad, nonmagnetic compatibility; Qi2 MPP for standardized magnetic alignment; MagSafe for Apple’s supported magnetic ecosystem; and Qi2 25W only for a phone-and-charger pair that explicitly supports that tier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is MagSafe the same as Qi?
No. Qi is the Wireless Power Consortium’s wireless-power standard. MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging and accessory system. A MagSafe Charger can also charge some Qi devices without magnetic attachment, but the names describe different systems.
Does Qi2 work with MagSafe?
Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile is based on MagSafe technology Apple contributed to the WPC, so Qi2 MPP brings compatible magnetic alignment into an interoperable standard. Check the phone, charger profile and case; not every Qi2 product is magnetic because Qi2 also includes nonmagnetic EPP.
Will a MagSafe Charger charge a Qi phone?
Apple says a MagSafe Charger can charge Qi-compatible iPhones and AirPods without magnetic alignment. The phone will not necessarily attach magnetically, and its charging rate depends on its Qi support, the charger model and the power adapter.
Which wireless charger should I use for my iPhone?
For faster wireless charging, Apple recommends a MagSafe Charger or a Qi2-certified charger. Select the exact model Apple lists for your iPhone, verify the charger generation and use the required adapter. A certified Qi1 charger can work but may take longer.
Can any Qi2 charger deliver 25W?
No. Qi2 originally described a 15W MPP. Qi2 25W is a later Qi v2.2.1 tier announced by the WPC in July 2025. Both the charger and phone must support the 25W profile; magnetic attachment alone proves neither.
Do I need a 30W adapter for MagSafe?
Apple specifies a 30W-or-greater adapter for its listed 25W MagSafe combinations. Other iPhone and charger combinations can have different requirements, so check Apple’s instructions for the exact setup.
Does a magnetic case make a phone Qi2-compatible?
No. A case can help a phone attach to a stand or charger, but it does not change the phone’s certified wireless-power receiver. Verify the phone’s Qi, Qi2 MPP or Qi2 25W support separately.
How can I verify that a charger is genuinely Qi or Qi2 certified?
Find the complete model number and search it in the WPC certified-products database. Confirm the certification status, Qi version and profile. A marketplace description or a generic “magnetic” label is not equivalent to a precise certification record.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Qi is the broad wireless-charging standard; MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic ecosystem; Qi2 MPP is the WPC magnetic profile derived from MagSafe technology; and Qi2 25W is a newer, device-specific power tier. Choose based on the phone’s documented profile, the charger’s certification, the case and the adapter—not a logo or maximum number alone.
