QBE Contents Insurance is designed to protect a renter’s belongings, not the building they live in. Whether it suits you depends on the replacement value of your possessions, the cover and limits shown on your policy documents, the options you select, the excess and the premium quoted for your circumstances.
What does QBE Contents Insurance cover for renters?
QBE describes its contents insurance as cover for belongings owned by renters and strata owner-occupiers. In some cases, it can also cover fixtures attached to the property that a renter is responsible for under their lease. The product page gives fire, flood and theft as examples of events that may damage or destroy contents, but the policy wording defines the events, conditions and exclusions that apply. Which policy documents should you check?
Use the wording that matches your policy’s start or renewal date, then check your certificate of insurance for the details specific to you. QBE’s document index lists:

How much contents cover should you choose?
Set the sum insured with the cost of replacing your belongings in mind—not simply what you paid for them or what you think they are worth second-hand. QBE asks customers to choose an amount needed to replace their contents. Make an inventory by room and estimate current replacement costs, then check whether the selected sum insured and any item-specific limits would be enough for the possessions you need to replace. Pay particular attention to valuables and item groups that may have separate limits. The independent CHOICE QBE renters review notes nominated limits for some groups of items and details about portable-cover geography. Treat those as prompts for what to verify, not as a substitute for the current PDS and your certificate: amounts, eligibility and terms depend on the applicable policy documents.

QBE lists accidental damage and portable contents away from home as optional additions for an extra premium. Do not assume either is part of your cover: check your quote and certificate to see which, if any, you selected and read the applicable terms to understand their scope. QBE Contents Insurance

What happens if you move?
QBE describes cover for up to 60 days at both your old and new Australian addresses when you move, subject to policy terms. Check the wording and your circumstances before relying on this provision, particularly if your move or the dates involved do not fit the stated arrangement. QBE’s product page
What is the excess, and how does it affect the price?
The excess is the amount you pay toward an accepted claim. QBE says choosing a higher excess can reduce the premium, while advising customers to select an amount they can afford at short notice. Consider the potential saving against the cash you would need to pay if you claimed. What exclusions and liability limits should you know about?
QBE explicitly lists building insurance, wear and tear, gradual deterioration and maintenance costs as not covered on its product page. That is not a complete list of exclusions: consult the PDS and certificate for the conditions, exclusions and limits applicable to your policy. QBE advertises legal liability cover up to $30 million. This is a headline maximum, not a promise that every injury or incident is covered; the applicable policy terms and schedule govern whether cover applies. QBE’s renters FAQ gives examples and explains that circumstances matter.

How to compare QBE with another contents policy
Compare policies using the same estimated replacement value for your belongings. Check the details that can change both the protection and the cost:
- Insured events, conditions and exclusions.
- Limits for valuables or particular item groups.
- Whether accidental damage is included or optional.
- Whether portable contents are covered away from home, and where.
- The excess and how much you could pay toward a claim.
- Any provisions for moving between addresses.
- Liability cover and its terms.
- The quoted annual or instalment premium.

Who might find QBE suitable?
QBE may be worth considering if you want cover for your own belongings as a renter and its available cover, limits, options and quoted price fit your needs. It may be a poor fit if the sum insured or item limits leave important possessions under-covered, you need an extension that is unavailable or not selected, or the excess would be difficult to pay. There is no universal verdict without matching the policy documents and quote to your belongings and circumstances.
