Qantas offers contents-only insurance for renters in eligible areas of Australia. Its public summary lists cover for specified events, but flood, accidental damage and several other features are optional extras. Whether the policy suits you depends on your belongings, address, quote, chosen excess and the policy documents that apply—not on the headline benefits or Qantas Points offer alone.
What Qantas renters contents insurance is
Qantas Home and Contents Insurance can cover a renter’s belongings without insuring the building. Qantas Airways Limited arranges the product as an authorised representative of Auto & General Services Pty Ltd; Auto & General Insurance Company Limited issues the policy. Qantas says it receives a commission. Its product information is general advice, and underwriting criteria apply. See the Qantas renters insurance summary and read the applicable policy documents before deciding.
Contents can include furniture, computers and electrical appliances, kitchenware, clothing and shoes, valuables such as jewellery and cameras, carpets and rugs, and internal blinds, curtains and window coverings. The policy’s sum insured and specific limits matter: a broad contents category does not mean every item is covered for its full replacement value. Qantas describes these examples in its contents insurance explainer.
What the public summary says is covered
Qantas lists cover for loss or damage to possessions from these insured events, subject to policy conditions, limits and exclusions:
#1 Best Overall
- ESSENTIAL Car Auto Insurance Registration BLACK Document Wallet Holders 2 Pieces
- Storm and rainwater
- Fire and lightning
- Theft or attempted theft
- Escape of liquid, such as a burst pipe
- Impact at the home
- Breakage of glass, ceramic and sanitary fixtures
- Malicious damage, vandalism, riot or civil commotion
- Explosion
- Earthquake or tsunami
These are summary descriptions, not a guarantee that every loss associated with an event label will be paid. The policy wording and circumstances determine whether a claim is covered. In particular, storm and rainwater appearing in the list does not mean flood is automatically included.
Which covers are optional
Qantas presents the following as optional covers available for an additional premium, subject to underwriting and policy terms:
- Flood: separately offered; it should not be assumed to be part of standard cover for storm and rainwater.
- Accidental damage: an add-on, not standard cover merely because an item is damaged.
- Personal effects: may cover specified items taken away from home.
- Motor burnout: applies to an appliance motor under 10 years old and may include food spoilage, subject to terms.
- Commercial storage: extends cover to contents held in commercial storage.
Check the quote and schedule to see which options are selected and the price charged for them. The Qantas cover comparison and the applicable PDS explain the product’s limits and conditions.

Benefits, item limits and excesses to examine
Qantas advertises new-for-old replacement when belongings are stolen or cannot be repaired, subject to limits and terms. It also says temporary accommodation for the renter and pets may be covered up to 10% of the sum insured for up to 12 months if an insured event makes the rental unliveable. Temporarily removed contents may be covered for loss or damage within 90 days, up to 20% of the total contents value. These are stated policy benefit limits, not guaranteed claim outcomes; check the wording that applies to your policy.
Qantas’s general contents pages also publish figures that may help identify questions to ask, but they are not a substitute for your quote or schedule:
| Item or benefit | Publicly stated figure | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Jewellery and watches | Up to $1,000 per item or set and $5,000 in total | Whether your item is subject to this cap and whether it can be specified for a higher amount. |
| Home office equipment | Up to $15,000 in total | Which equipment qualifies and whether the limit is sufficient. |
| Legal liability | Up to $20 million | The circumstances, exclusions and conditions applying to liability cover. |
| Basic excess | $300 to $5,000 range | Your selected excess; fixed excesses may also apply depending on risk and underwriting. |
| Personal effects excess | $100 | Whether this applies to the optional cover you select. |
| Earthquake or tsunami excess | $500 | How it applies alongside any other excess in your schedule. |
The published caps and excess figures come from Qantas’s contents page and cover comparison. Qantas says policy terms apply; use your own policy schedule to confirm actual limits and excesses.

If a valuable item exceeds a benefit limit, Qantas says customers may be able to specify contents for more than the applicable limit. It also describes specifying portable items for cover away from home. Ask whether an item must be listed, what evidence or valuation is required and which locations are covered. Qantas explains specifying contents in its item-listing guidance.

There is no single premium established by the public summary: you need an address-specific quote. Qantas advertises a 15% first-year premium discount for a new renters policy taken out online. Its renters page also displays a switch offer of up to 35,000 Qantas Points; the policy must be held for 60 days to earn points, and the maximum-points offer requires a minimum annual premium of $2,000. Exclusions and other eligibility terms apply. The page also promotes earning one Qantas Point per dollar of premium and potential points through the Qantas Wellbeing App.
Offers can change, so check the live terms, qualifying dates and your eligibility before relying on them. Compare the quoted premium after any introductory discount with the likely renewal premium, and weigh the points only if their qualifying conditions and value matter to you.

Eligibility and documents that govern your cover
Qantas says Home and Contents Insurance is unavailable in the Northern Territory, North Queensland and Northern Western Australia. Address-level eligibility and underwriting still need to be checked when you request a quote.
The policy version depends on when your policy is quoted or renewed. Qantas’s policy-document index lists:

How to decide whether the policy fits
Before buying or comparing it with another renters contents policy, work through these checks using like-for-like quotes:
- Set a realistic sum insured. Estimate the replacement value of your belongings rather than choosing a number based only on the premium.
- Check item sublimits. Identify valuables or home office equipment that may exceed a per-item or total cap, and ask whether they can be specified.
- Separate standard events from add-ons. Confirm whether you need flood, accidental damage, personal effects, motor burnout or commercial storage, and whether each appears on your quote.
- Review temporary and away-from-home cover. Check limits for temporary accommodation, temporarily removed belongings and portable items.
- Compare actual excesses. Use the excess in your own quote, including any additional event-specific or optional-cover excess.
- Compare ongoing cost. Look beyond a first-year discount and assess the renewal premium when available.
- Check reward conditions and eligibility. Confirm the current Qantas Points offer terms and whether the insurer will cover your address.
- Read exclusions and policy versions. Confirm the applicable PDS/SPDS and schedule rather than relying on a marketing summary.
A landlord’s building policy is not a substitute for cover for your belongings. Whether contents insurance is worthwhile depends on the cost of replacing what you own and the cover you can obtain on acceptable terms; no public summary alone can establish that Qantas is the cheapest or best choice for your circumstances.
