If CodeBots Arena tests pass locally but GitHub Actions cannot import the project code, the likely problem is that CI has not added the directory containing the package to Python’s module search path. The title-matching article reports fixing this by setting PYTHONPATH to the repository’s server directory for the test step, then running python -m pytest tests/ -v. That path is specific to this project; confirm your own package location before copying it.

What failed in CodeBots Arena

The reported failure occurred before the tests could exercise application behavior: CI could not resolve imports for project components such as the battle engine. The article attributes the issue to the server-side source directory not being on Python’s search path. Its reported workflow change was to set PYTHONPATH: ${{ github.workspace }}/server for the test step and invoke python -m pytest tests/ -v. The article says this allowed CI to resolve the imports and proceed to run tests; the repository and cited commit were not independently verified.

Why Python can find code locally but not in CI

Python searches locations listed in sys.path when resolving imports. A source directory can exist in the checkout and still be invisible to an import if that directory is not on the search path. pytest’s documentation explains that non-test modules must be accessible through sys.path, and documents its import behavior and configuration.

Local and CI commands can also differ in how they expose the working directory. Running python -m pytest adds the current directory to sys.path; running the pytest executable does not do that in the same way. This helps explain some environment differences, but it will not add an arbitrary nested source folder such as server.

Find the import root before changing the workflow

  1. Read the failing import. Identify the package name Python cannot find and locate the directory that contains that importable package in the checked-out repository.
  2. Check the path against the import. The directory you add must make the import statement valid. For example, a project may need its server folder on the path, but another repository may use src, a package directory, or the repository root.
  3. Compare local and CI setup. Check the working directory, Python interpreter, dependency installation, and exact test command. GitHub recommends using setup-python in Actions so the workflow selects a predictable Python version; hosted-runner defaults can vary.

Set PYTHONPATH for the GitHub Actions test step

For the CodeBots Arena layout described in the incident article, the reported environment setting is:

env:
  PYTHONPATH: ${{ github.workspace }}/server

Apply it to the step that runs tests, or to a wider job only if the same source root is intended for every step. In a different repository, replace server with the verified import root; copying the example literally can point Python at the wrong directory.

The article reports the test command as:

python -m pytest tests/ -v

Use the same invocation locally and in CI when comparing results. GitHub’s Python workflow guidance shows the broader pattern of selecting Python, installing dependencies, and running pytest as explicit workflow steps.

Choose the right import fix for the project

Approach Best fit Trade-off
Set PYTHONPATH to the source root A repository has a clear source directory that CI does not otherwise expose. This is the reported CodeBots Arena fix. The value depends on repository and runner layout; a wrong path conceals rather than resolves the layout assumption.
Run python -m pytest The current working directory is meant to be importable. It adds only the current directory, not a nested source directory.
Install the project in CI or use a src layout A package should be tested in the installed form or with an explicit source/package structure. Requires deliberate packaging and installation steps. pytest notes that import behavior can affect whether tests use an installed or local package.
Change pytest import mode The project deliberately needs a different test-module discovery and import strategy. pytest’s prepend, append, and importlib modes behave differently; changing modes is not the reported incident fix.

When pytest import modes matter

pytest’s default prepend mode inserts the directory containing a test module at the beginning of sys.path when needed. append puts it at the end, which can lead tests to use an installed package instead of a local package with the same import root. pytest suggests considering a src layout to avoid that kind of ambiguity.

The importlib mode imports test modules without changing sys.path. That has consequences: test modules cannot import one another in the usual way, and utility modules under the tests directory are not automatically importable. Treat import mode as a project-level choice, not a substitute for identifying the missing source root.

Verify that the import fix worked

  • If CI still reports ModuleNotFoundError, confirm the configured path exists in the checkout and is the directory from which the failing import should resolve.
  • Ensure the workflow uses the intended Python version and installs the project’s dependencies before the test command.
  • Compare the CI working directory and command with the local invocation. python -m pytest exposes the current directory, not every project subdirectory.
  • After imports and collection succeed, treat any later assertion or application error as a separate test failure; the reported CodeBots Arena incident concerned imports before test logic ran.

The incident article says the change was recorded as commit fa401d4, “Add PYTHONPATH to test run step in CI workflow.” That commit detail and the reported outcome come from the article’s indexed excerpt, not an independent repository check. Read the incident article for its account.
